There are a whole lot of traditions and superstitions regarding the fey, some of which made it into RAW Pathfinder. (The harmful effect of cold iron is one.) I put the "don't thank them" superstition into this particular KM game myself. Mechanically, all it does is add to the DC of any Diplomacy checks you're making; it's not a supernatural thing, it's because (supposedly) thanking someone for a good deed is the first step to forgetting it. Giving them a tangible reward, though, is a sign that the deed will be remembered. So Havrin took the right tack with them, and that made up for Jacyn's minor faux pas. (Besides, Perlivash is a dragon, not fey.)

Sorry about the lack of posting today, folks--I took the day off of work and spent it cleaning, shopping, and cooking for a party tomorrow. I'll try to get the results of Havrin's scouting up sometime soon, but it may be a day or two.
DM Carbide |
Today was my wife's birthday, and work was also kind of frenetic. Real post coming tomorrow.
DM Carbide |
Posting may be kind of thin for me today. The joys of getting older; I had a blood pressure spike a couple of nights ago, and though it wasn't anything damaging the docs still want to give me a stress test this morning. I've got time for a few posts before the sadists, er, techs arrive, but after that I'm not sure what they'll want to do.
DM Carbide |
Back among the living. The stress test was negative (so I have no stress? I don't think so...), I'm just supposed to cut way back on sodium and maybe get high blood pressure meds. On the whole, it could have been a lot worse.

This is not being a good week. Yesterday morning on the way in to work, I had someone run a red light and total my car. No serious injury to anyone, thankfully, but I have aches and pains all over, and I'll have to replace the car soon. At least the other driver admitted fault at the scene. Anyway, that's all to say that I'll get a posting up as soon as I can, but I'm kind of distracted at the moment.
DM Carbide |
I'll see what I can find, but that sounds reasonable as a first approximation.
DM Carbide |
Not that I could find, and the build rules in Rivers Run Red are focused on Build Points, with no particular relationship between BP, gold, and building area.
DM Carbide |
I didn't see it in a cursory look at the GMG, either.
DM Carbide |
My light posting lately has been because of the avalanche of paperwork from the accident and finding a replacement car. It doesn't help that I'm also trying to get tax stuff together. There may be a few more light days ahead, but I should be able to get back to some kind of rhythm this weekend or early next week.
DM Carbide |
Good question. I haven't run the numbers lately; I think you're about halfway, but I'll add it up and let you know.
godsDMit |
I had actually been wondering that as well. I know Kingmaker is kinda set apart from teh rest of the APs cause you can more or less wander around doing whatever.
Without going into too much detail, are we getting towards 'the end of the book' or are we way off track and you are just making stuff up as we go?
DM Carbide |
You've only explored a fraction of the Stolen Lands, but I'm not sure how much I want to stick to the book--you guys punch above your level*, so even with Alex Kilcoyne's conversion for six characters you should go through most of the set-piece encounters without too much trouble. There are a few that might make you work up a sweat, though, and the encounter at the end with the Stag Lord is going to be tough.
*The AP is apparently designed with the archetypal four-person party in mind: melee specialist, skill monkey, divine spellcaster, arcane spellcaster. You have a divine spellcaster, an arcane spellcaster, a skill monkey/limited arcane caster, and three melee specialists (one of whom has limited divine abilities, and another of whom is a decent backup skill monkey; the third merely(!) has some party buffs at this point). In a standup fight, you can put a whole lot of hurt in a very short time on anything with a less than stellar AC. There was a reason I came up with an in-game justification for the bear to have DR 5/cold iron.
DM Carbide |
You're a hair over 2/3 the way from L2 to L3.
DM Carbide |
I'm sorry for the delays; I was cut off from the boards Wednesday, in meetings most of Thursday, doing a system rebuild yesterday, and mostly dealing with domesticity today. I'll get something out in the next couple of days, although I may be afk tomorrow as well--my mother is in hospital with minor atrial fibrillation (the meds are working so far, so she probably won't need a pacemaker), and I may be going up to visit her.
DM Carbide |
I'll try to keep the pace a little slower, then. Good luck!
Speaking of slower, my wife's school is on spring break this week, so I've taken the week off. On the road yesterday, then homeowner hell today and probable domestic outings of one sort or another the next few days, so I won't exactly be on top of things.
DM Carbide |
I'm going to be on the road and hard to reach for the next twelve hours or so.

How did the con go, Jacyn?
godsDMit |
Incredibly well. I think we sat 27 tables of players over the three days.
I had 15 'new player' packets made up with a blank character sheet, a new player PFS number, and a bit of info about our local group. I think all of them got used.
We had a good number of people who won some of the boons that were prizes just for playing, and the raffle we held for the actual prize support stuff Paizo sent to our visiting Venture Captain went over very well, too.
Very tiring, but very worth it. I'm glad I took today off of work. ;)

Impressive. BTW, congratulations on your Venture-Lieutenancy!
Jacyn Frestarn |
Thank you very much. That's well more than double the number of table we ran (and way more players) last year.
Im not sure how my name will appear when Im in non-PFS parts of the boards. If it always puts my name on there and doesnt let me use my aliases, thatd be totally lame.
*Testing*
Edit: Huzzah!
DM Carbide |
Just out of curiosity, is anyone waiting on me for a response, or some information?
DM Carbide |
Updated map coming tonight. Where do you want to go next?
Also, how'd the con go?
Jacyn Frestarn |
Sorry lol, I am back, just havent had time to post yet.
The con went well, though I got a fever Friday night which broke early Saturday morning and had an upset stomach for almost the whole rest of the thing. So the games were fine, I was not. Better now though. :P
DM Carbide |
Understood. RL comes first, always. Speaking of which, I'm going to be on the road this evening and tomorrow, with little likelihood for an update before tomorrow night. All times as for GMT - 5.
DM Carbide |
It's been a year since I sat down in the DM's chair for this AP, which makes for a good opportunity to reflect. So I had a few questions for you. How do you think the game is going? Are there things I should be doing differently? What sorts of things would you like to do? You can reply by PM if you'd like.
My answers to such questions as are applicable:
1) Too slowly, some of which is my fault and some of which is probably the sum effect of a whole lot of real life on the part of many of you at once.
2) I should be (and have started to) keeping better track of what everyone's doing/requesting/etc. I'd thought that having the full posting history would be enough, but the difficulty in searching through old posts pretty-much mandates having some kind of calendar, especially for KM.
3) I (obviously) can't answer that for you.
Thank you, and I hope we can keep this going.
Adam Burlevogne |
1)Yes, the game feels like it is going a little slowly...
2)More experience, more treasure... Feed my greed! =P
3)Well, I would like to start setting up contacts, basic infrastructure that we will probably need later on. There might be a system already in place in the game for that to happen, though (I'm not reading ahead... lol). My little power-hungry imp (Oh wait, that's Tyrion, not Adam) wants to get his hands dirty.
Bea |
While the game might be going slowly, it's completely understandable considering everyone's busy lives, and this happens to be by far the longest running PbP I've ever participated in, as most of them tend to die out in the first few encounters. Let's keep it going!
With a campaign as complicated and non-linear as this, I've found it's absolutely essential to keep everything in a spreadsheet. Everything from the current date to character stats to NPC events needs to be tracked - google docs makes this very easy and portable.
I apologize for possibly being a bit of a limelight hog during this past year - many of the non-scripted rp events we've had have been directed at me or instigated by me. Let me know if I need to dial it back a bit, but if not I'm having a blast fleshing out what's becoming one of my favorite characters ever. I'm hoping you can come up with similar kinds of "special moments" for the rest of the PCs.
Jacyn Frestarn |
My only criticism is the game moving more slowly than I would like, as Bea has said, that does tend to happen.
As for hogging the spotlight, Bea, I'm not bothered by it, as it tends to move things along, lol. I havent quite worked out the personality I want Jacyn to have, but so far Ive been playing him as kind of quiet. I figure the longer the game goes, the more open and friendly I might make him. For now he's very straightforward, to the point kind of guy.
As for things you shouldnt do, Carbide, you definitely should not charge me full gp for a messed up cold iron morningstar, lol. I'm totally willing to roleplay to get the discount, I just want to see Havrin's reaction to the messed up arrows before going for it. I figure two upset customers is a bigger deal than one. ;)
Havrin Stahl |
Wow! Hard to believe it's been a year already! This has been a really fun PbP, with great PCs and NPCs with whom to interact. To answer your questions:
1) Being one of the admittedly slower posters, the pace has been fine for me since this past year has been uncommonly busy for me in real life. But I will strive to post more frequently!
2) I will also try to keep better track of what Havrin has done and what he's requested; for example, I totally forgot about ordering the cold iron arrows. A calendar would be great - maybe a link to one in google docs on the Campaign Info page, along with the link to the map of the areas we've explored. Your DM'ing has been great and I've really enjoyed the encounters we've had so far.
3) As to things I'd like to do, I'm not really sure. Due to my inability to post frequently, I've been happy to have Havrin play the part of stoic companion and follow the lead of the others. I haven't seen Bea as hogging the spotlight - on the contrary, I've enjoyed watching her character develop, and sort of see Havrin as someone who can help encourage her growing relationship with Erastil. Havrin's only other really defining characteristics are his respect for the fey and his hatred of bandits (which was admittedly tempered a bit by the heroics of the reformed bandits at the mites lair). So expect to see those qualities come into play when such interactions arise.
As to the messed up cold iron morningstar and arrows, Havrin wasn't pleased by the items' condition but suspects/fears that the merchant was plagued with such bad luck by the fey for bringing cold iron weapons to the Greenbelt, and worries that a similar fate may now befall the companions. So Havrin was willing to pay the man the full price for his troubles (plus Katya should hopefully be able to Mend them).
