Given that for a while you had two wizards capable of casting mending at will with you, you can indeed sell your old items to Oleg for half price. Havrin, the horse will take another few days to come up with. It should be at Oleg's by the time you get back from your next expedition.

Cool! Thanks!

I'll be on the road most of the day; will try to get a continuing post up tonight after I hear which way you're going.

Sorry - my file server experienced catastrophic data loss on Friday due to a faulty power supply and I spent most of the weekend getting things back up and running (yay backups!). Posting now.
Jacyn Frestarn |
Sorry I didn't get this up earlier; work was nuts this afternoon, and then I spent about four hours cooking at home. (Four meat pies, plus extra filling. Turned out just fine.)
Again, sorry for being absent for so long.
The meat pies comment is making me want to watch Sweeny Todd, lol.
I will graciously accept the cloak.
Ok, so adding up all the coinage (converted to gold for ease) and assuming we sell the cold iron sickle (since neither Adam nor Simn said they wanted it) and both of Kressle's mwk handaxes, that gives us a total of 648.41gp. Divided 6 ways gives some terrible repeating decimal that is close to 108gp, 7cp.
Is anyone not ok with that number or think Im messing something up?
Also, we still have 2 Cure Moderate Wounds potions, if someone in particular wants to carry them. I took one of the CLW pots earlier, so I'll pass on these.
Also also, what 1800gp did we get from what swordlords? When was this?

Here you go!
"Adam is also quite a scholar. If you get past his tendency to cynicism, he has a lot of useful information.
"Don't tell the merchants I've gone--it's not that I don't trust them, it's that...actually, I don't trust them."
With that, the unprepossessing little mage gathers up some food and heads out, never to be seen again (or at least not likely to be seen again). Several days later, however, a messenger and a couple of soldiers arrive from Restov with a small chest and a letter of commendation to the party for their part in reducing bandit activity and settling down the kobolds. The chest contains 1800 gold pieces and a short unsigned note in a familiar hand--"The Swordlords are pretty happy with what we did. Don't mess it up!"

Ok, so another 300 gold apiece.

Ask and ye shall receive...I'm about to link to a pdf of the areas you've explored so far.

I'm going to be at an SF con this weekend, and I don't feel like paying the hotel $10/day for internet access. So I'll only be able to read posts and make simple ones through my phone. I'll be back Sunday night, though.
Jacyn Frestarn |
Though I havent posted it yet for the new day, I intend to have Jacyn continue to pick up the tripped traps and bring them along. By my count we should have: 3 from the first day that werent tripped, 3 from the second day that were tripped, 2 today that have been tripped. So 8 total (not counting the one with the dead bunny, which we didnt take). Is that right so far?
DM Carbide |
Ten pounds, including the chain and stake. Kind of makes me wonder about the trapper--I mean, does he have a mule or something to carry the nominal dozens of traps around?
DM Carbide |
Everyone except Simn, at least. (The good thanksgiving part, not the get rolling again part.)
Jacyn Frestarn |
Well, that didnt work exactly how I wanted it to. :P
Ah well, at least it's grappling me, which will give Havrin a better chance of hitting it.
Anyone have any idea if a person who is agrappled can use Total Defense? I really dont think I can get out of it's grapple, so it may just be better for me to try to survive long enough for you all to kill it, opposed to me to try to attack it myself.
Count Buggula |
I usually try really hard not to metagame...but I'm going to right now.
Brown Bear: AC 16
Black Bear: AC 17
Polar Bear: AC 20
Dire Bear: AC 18
Grappling gives the condition to both, so both the bear and Jacyn have a -4 to dex (-2 AC). Assuming no other modifiers, a 15 should hit a grappling brown or black bear. I'd find it highly unusual to encounter a polar bear here, and really hope we're not fighting a dire bear (CR 7). Also, if the bear was charging, it would have an additional -2 AC for one round, making the Polar Bear the only one a 15 couldn't hit.
The other thing that I could not be considering is the bear could have the advanced template or some such that would raise its AC.
Please know that I'm not trying to override your ruling, I just want to make sure you're making it with all the correct information. If you still rule that I missed, I'm fine with that.
Jacyn Frestarn |
He could decide that the bear is only going to grapple me with the part of its body that got me (the one arm- like the bear is using it to hold me to the ground or something), which would keep it from having the grappled condition as well, though it takes -20 on its check to keep me grappled. Also, id imagine that would be something that would need to be stated when I was first grappled, not afterwards.

Huh...I didn't know you could do that. Can you point me to where that's listed in the rules? I play a grapple specialized character in PFS and it'd be good to know for future reference.
Even if that's the case though, it'd still get the -2 AC from charging.
Kiradia |
Technically characters cannot do the -20 grapple trick. The rule is only under the monster grab special attack.
Grab (Ex) If a creature with this special attack hits with the indicated attack (usually a claw or bite attack), it deals normal damage and attempts to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. Unless otherwise noted, grab can only be used against targets of a size equal to or smaller than the creature with this ability. If the creature can use grab on creatures of other sizes, it is noted in the creature's Special Attacks line. The creature has the option to conduct the grapple normally, or simply use the part of its body it used in the grab to hold the opponent. If it chooses to do the latter, it takes a –20 penalty on its CMB check to make and maintain the grapple, but does not gain the grappled condition itself. A successful hold does not deal any extra damage unless the creature also has the constrict special attack. If the creature does not constrict, each successful grapple check it makes during successive rounds automatically deals the damage indicated for the attack that established the hold. Otherwise, it deals constriction damage as well (the amount is given in the creature's descriptive text).
Creatures with the grab special attack receive a +4 bonus on combat maneuver checks made to start and maintain a grapple.
DM Carbide |
Sorry I didn't get back to this sooner--work and home stuff collided to take up a lot of attention. You're right; I missed the AC penalty for grappling. Will run it out with the change.
Adam Burlevogne |
Alright, well I've been thinking of expanding my character's repertoire a little bit and taking a level as a divine tactician cleric with the Nobility (Leadership) domain. Any comments?
My main thing though, is that Erastil and Gorum (the main deities of the area) aren't within reach of my alignment, or don't offer that domain. Any one have a suggestion to make this work storywise?
Well, actually I do have another quirk... After playing Adam for a bit, I've realized his actions are more lawful neutral than chaotic neutral. He has respect for the nobility, and for the prestige of wealth (which might be able to purchase nobility). So he has both chaotic tendencies (to use wealth, even stolen wealth if possible to gain the advantage) and lawful tendencies (a respect for nobility, but without subjugating himself to it again). Unfortunately there's not really a lawful chaotic. So, being chaotic neutral might be the best way to describe his alignment, though he doesn't quite believe in the Protean's and Limbo's ultimate destruction of the universe ideology. So, a little bit of a problem there too.
I suppose Adam could be neutral evil, but introducing an evil character into the campaign may not be the best idea I've ever had. But it would potentially fit, since much of Adam's behaviors are motivated by greed and political power rather than philanthropic and selfless desires.
Jacyn Frestarn |
What about just being neutral?
A socially and politically open-minded individual(chaotic) who respects nobility and has aspirations of attaining a title for himself sometime (lawful) who mostly follows actions that serve the greater good (good), but isnt above making sure his own desires and needs are satisfied, even if it inconveniences someone else on occasion (evil, kinda). I think that sounds pretty close to how youve been playing him thus far.
Neutral would be within a step from Gorum, but it doesnt really solve you desire to take the domain you wanted though. Perhaps DM Carbide could send an npc cleric of 'insert of other deity who has that domain' down to check on hos things are progressing and you could convert then?
Also, Im perfectly fine with you taking levels in cleric if you want.
DM Carbide |
There was a variant set of D&D rules from back in the Dark Ages of gaming that presented a slightly different 2-d alignment system. The midpoint of the Good/Evil axis wasn't a second Neutral, it was Amoral. Under that, I'd make Adam Neutral Amoral.
WRT a god with the Nobility domain, let me give that some thought. It's an interesting idea. If you do that, btw, I'll use fractional BAB accounting for you.
DM Carbide |
How about being a Neutral cleric of Abadar? Not really a strong faith in the area, but the combination of nobility and greed seems to fit fairly well. You'd be scandalously heterodox in your willingness to embrace questionable tactics, but I think you could probably deal with that.
Havrin Stahl |
How about Abadar? Abadar's clerics can be true neutral, and his domains include Nobility and the Leadership subdomain. Plus his worship is common in Brevoy.
EDIT: Ninja'd by DM Carbide!
Adam Burlevogne |
Well if nobody minds me playing the type of Neutral that is all over the place (except against universal destruction), I'll go with that.
And while I am thinking about being a Divine Tactician, I might look into that a bit more. (I don't have Ultimate Combat yet, so I'm going on d20pfsrd's text). It might be cool to have domains: Leadership and Metal... but I'll look into it some more. We have awhile before we level anyway.
Not metal. Oh, he is common in Brevoy. Cool. :P
EDIT: So far, Nobility (Leadership) or Travel (Trade) seem the best choices for my character concept if I'm to be a cleric of Abadar. But since Divine Tactician seems to be the best option also, I'll go with that one- Nobility (leadership) domain. This of course opens me up for the Balanced Scale Prestige Class (if allowed), and of course, that makes my greedy little eyes light up... :P but we'll see how things develop.
Katya Volkv |
I too have been doing a bit of consideration towards the future design of Katya and I wanted to discuss something with all of you. Specifically regarding the creation feats. Given the eventual nature of the campaign I imagine we will have certain spaces of downtime where Craft feats might actually become worth it. It would certainly allow the party to stretch the effective power of our monetary resources and would eventually allow Katya to expand into the Craft Construct feat which I have always had a desire to play with. So, I guess I am wondering what people think of my options? Crafting feats are a pretty large investment if I'm going to be doing most of them. An investment that will take away from metamagic feats and a few other things like the spell focus conjuration line.
Another thing I have been considering is how prevalent summoned monsters should be for my wizard. In the past I've had a mixed bag of experiences using them, from making combats take up to twice as long because of inexperienced DMs dealing with them, and other times they've slotted in like slightly randomized animal companions. How do you feel about the summon monster line DM Carbide?
Just a few of my random musings at 5 in the morning. :)
DM Carbide |
Katya, I'm good with summoned creatures. If it were tabletop my relative inexperience might be an issue, but PbP gives me a bit more time to devote to tracking a fight. And I know you-all will keep me on the straight and narrow :-P!

I've been having a really hard time trying to decide what Bea would do at this point, so I finally decided to leave it to a coin flip. 1= stays, 2= runs.
1d2 ⇒ 1
Ok, looks like she's gonna stick it out. Sorry, I know this isn't probably the wisest thing in the world, but it's what she's gotta do. I'll get an IC post soon to that effect.
DM Carbide |
If it helps, remember that the shambling mound isn't detectably evil.
(It figures; when I finally get on, it's half a minute after you post. Timing.)
Count Buggula |
Well if you die, Im coming with, cause Jacyn isnt fond of leaving people behind. He'll probably be cursing her while they fight, but he's not leaving without Bea.
*Dear Paizoboards, For Christmas I'd like the dice to fall in our favor as we embark on this most foolish of endeavors. :P*
*salutes Jacyn*
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of hell
When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wonder'd.
Honor the charge they made!
