DM-Camris' SECOND DARKNESS Part 1 and 2: Children of the Void (Inactive)

Game Master Camris

A star has fallen and the rush is on! While the crimelords of Riddleport race to be the first to claim the mysterious skymetal, dark works are afoot at the crash site on the island of Devil's Elbow...

Me'mori, it was intended that you all be strangers who come together as a result of shared danger at the beginning; so that you could bring whatever you liked into the game.

As for deeper connections...

In no way do I advocate changing your character, but an elf or a mage studying the cyphergate runes (cyphermage), would be involved more deeply; but they wouldn't come into play until the last half of the campaign, waaaaay down the road. No guarantee we'd ever get there.

In fact, thats one of the main critiques of the campaign, that after a couple of adventures in Riddleport, building a business and connections to the community, the campaign takes a left turn and you never see it again.

Baral, where did you find that combat style? I don't have a source for it. Otherwise a classic mighty barbarian. Looking good so far!

PF#10, pg28.. It's also in.. *rummages around books* ah, also HERE in the pfsrd, but it is also quoted on these boards.

Pssh, we're barbarians! This isn't our community.

OK, combat style is in. Man, I live in fear of your offensive power once you get buffed.

Male Human (Shoanti) Barbarian 2

DM-Camris Haha! I believe Baral is going to be quite efficient in battle. I will have my character fully fleshed out tomorrow.
Me'mori - How is Nakoda developing?.. and I gladly accept the 500 gp, if you haven't changed your mind.

Werehare Inquisitive 3/ Seeker 3/ Bard 3

Nakoda is done. Link through me if you wish to see, and yes, that 500gp is still available. I accounted for it, actually.

The only thing I haven't written for her is the background explanation for bringing them to Riddleport.

Btw, I do feel obligated to point out that Thunder and Fang is a Combat style Feat.

Characters are shaping up nicely.

As for why a couple of barbarian types are in the big city, I'll bet a tribal shaman would take note of the Shadow in the Sky and not like it one bit. Just the thing to send out a couple of warriors to slay the sky demon (maybe getting rid of some troublemakers to boot); or something like that.

Are you two going to be dressing like locals? I keep trying to picture Baral in a tuxedo... and failing.

Werehare Inquisitive 3/ Seeker 3/ Bard 3

No reason we shouldn't be. It would be more pragmatic.

Werehare Inquisitive 3/ Seeker 3/ Bard 3

A question about the "thing" that our elders sent us to investigate/retrieve.. do we have a description for it?

How about a prophecy, made by his forefathers forefathers, about the chosen ones picked to face down the great evil, it's sign is the shadow in the sky... etc.

You can make one up, or do you want me to?

Werehare Inquisitive 3/ Seeker 3/ Bard 3

Not really necessary. I'll just go for the "in the times of (blah) there will be a (thing) that will require the attention of (the tribe). If none are sent, and the attention is not given, it will bode ill for the (bleh)."

That way, we aren't the "Chosen Ones", or anything with particularly high expectations. We're just the ones that got sent to investigate because we happened to be handy for a scouting expedition.

I aggree with every bleh and blah. Couldn't have been more exact.

Male Human (Shoanti) Barbarian 2

hp for 2nd lvl = 1d12 ⇒ 11
Btw Baral is not wearing a tuxedo, even though it is an awesome idea. Beneath his white-ish cloak, he is wearing a full plate armor with a design that resembles that of a klar.

I would say Baral is finished now.

Am I correct that we are going to retcon things so that Baral and Nakoda we at the Tournament instead of Darcy and Alexandu? If that's the case, it might be good to know what skills we would likely have seen during the fight from each, as well as each getting the appropriate shares of the treasure.

Good Idea.
Baral and Nakoda, please describe the fighting styles or other actions you displayed that the others would have seen during the heist.

Werehare Inquisitive 3/ Seeker 3/ Bard 3

Got to read the heist bit. Will post here.

Werehare Inquisitive 3/ Seeker 3/ Bard 3

Is it required that we take on duties?

If we were hired to be troubleshooters/enforcers, Nakoda may hire on for that, but directly speaking, she is not here to learn how to run a casino, nor is she (and by extension Baral, I suppose) particularly interested in the day-to-day goings on.

Baral can voice otherwise, of course. However, until trouble arises, Nakoda would rather be out trying to learn whatever she can about what the elders sent her here to do. Her culture shock is manageable, but she would still rather be home than in the city.

--

As for her actions during the fight, she would be inspiring Baral (war-chanting), and aiding him where it seemed most feasible, mostly striking with her whip (nonlethal, I know, but Baral does enough damage on his own) at any of the bandits that passed within reach and were unlucky enough to get caught by Baral.

As for being in the casino at the time? This many rumors going on about the most eventful thing is often beneficial to networking, especially since cities are not exactly her forté (but give her a level).

The premise of the game is that you hired on as junior partners at the casino; at the most basic level, you hang around being seen (you're minor celebrity heroes) and available to go help if a fight breaks out.
If doing those other jobs listed to help profitablity leave you cold, well it's not required, but your teammates might have a problem sharing profits (if any) if you don't.
Could lead to character dynamics unforseen...

Werehare Inquisitive 3/ Seeker 3/ Bard 3

Nakoda will be able to take being hired on, but actively interacting with the gambling crowd (in the aforementioned jobs) does not really have her interest. I suppose she'll take the Diplomacy one where she interacts with the customers, and treat it as practice for networking while trying to find out what can be found about the shadow.

Baral will simply hang around near Nakoda, not having a problem with being paid for eliminating threats which he would have done anyway, but his eyes can hardly be kept keener than they already are, since he sees alot of potential threats to him and Nakoda in Riddleport. He is also mostly interested in learning more about the shadow, but he leaves the talking to Nakoda and mainly listens. He does not take too kindly to "fans", as he is mainly concerned with Nakoda's safety and the success of their quest.

Edit: Takes Perception but in the vicinity of Dakoda who takes Diplomacy.

Male Human (Shoanti) Barbarian 2

Just noticed I have been adding +6 as Str mod instead of +5 all along. Sorry about that. Will make the appropriate changes to the sheet immediatly.

Male Dwarf Rogue* 2

Due to personal medical reason I must regretfully bow out of this game. Life has become just to hectic to keep up with posting. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Male Human

Dude! Sorry to see you go and I hope things turn out well for you!

Male Half-Elf Ranger Level 2

I don't have any background material for this second darkness campaign.

Because of that, I don't understand what the concept of a cyphermage is. Feel free to enlighten me. It sounds like they are some kind of divination expert, but considering the cutthroat riddleport setting they must have considerable influence in some way.

Under Wizards there is this passage:

Obsessed with the secrets of its infamous monuments,
wizards have flocked to Varisia for decades, hoping to
discover ancient magics and arcane secrets amid the
enigmatic monoliths. At the vanguard of research exploring
these gigantic artifacts, the Order of Cyphers—a group
of scholars with a shared obsession—makes its home
in Riddleport. Growing in influence by the year, these
cyphermages study Varisian monuments—particularly
Riddleport’s enigmatic Cyphergate—in exhaustive
detail. Although the Order exists to share discoveries
and research, many cyphermages prove dangerously
competitive, keeping their findings from one another and
even sabotaging the inquiries of their peers.

Under "Spells of the Cyphermages":

Rarely seen far from the City of Cyphers, Riddleport’s
mysterious and misunderstood cyphermages dedicate
their careers to unlocking the ancient secrets of Varisia’s
famed monuments. The trappings of ancient cultures
fascinate these mages, from obscure runes and abandoned
languages to the spells and relics of cultures long forgotten.
From their headquarters in Riddleport, members of the
Order of Cyphers venture wherever they must to unravel
the secrets over which they obsess, traveling from the feet
of gargantuan monoliths to the ruins of ancient dungeons,
from the lecture halls of their organization to libraries half
a world away.
Because cyphermages immerse
themselves in the lore and nuance
of the ancients, they highly
value precision and complexity,
going so far as to
develop spells dedicated to
uncovering new information
and protecting the discoveries
they’ve uncovered.

What is A Cyphermage?

Students of the lingering lore of Varisia’s ancient past,
cyphermages seek to understand the magic inherent in the
land’s ancient monuments and reveal the mysteries carved
into centuries-old stone. These students of the past vary in
arcane skill and interest, with bards, sorcerers, wizards, and
clerics of Irori and Nethys making up the majority of their
ranks, though even ingenious non-spellcasting scholars
are welcomed to join. Intrigued by all things Varisian, these
researchers often adopt the mysterious tattoos some of the
land’s native wanderers possess, seeking to find greater
understanding of and intimacy with the mysteries they
explore (see the Pathfinder Campaign Setting for more details
on Varisian Tattoos). Aside from imitating the traditions of
Varisia’s natives, cyphermages have learned much in their
investigations and widely share many of their most inspired
discoveries. The Order of Cyphers keeps its greatest secrets
for its most esteemed members, however.

For PC Cyphermages

Through researching endless ancient arcane script, you have
discovered a more efficient method to record spells.
_Prerequisite: Int 12, Decipher Script 4 ranks.

has taught you secrets to draw greater power from a variety

than the level of the scroll’s creator. This benefit extends to
scrolls that you have created.

Male Half-Elf Ranger Level 2

Thanks for the info!!!

It is helpful.

Guys? You still there?

Male Human Cleric 3

Still here. figured I'd let others weigh in on the 'Detective Work or Skip it' option before I put in my two cents.

Werehare Inquisitive 3/ Seeker 3/ Bard 3

Given that most of the character's work would lead them towards the information if done correctly, I am not averse to skipping it, if that is what the majority wishes.. I would have liked to establish some contacts for my character, though.

It's not a problem. I'll write an outline of the investigation and include a number of potential contacts for Player characters to develop as they wish. Most likely tomorrow.

Werehare Inquisitive 3/ Seeker 3/ Bard 3

I'm still here. Who are we holding on?

Male Half-Elf Ranger Level 2

I guess Baral is all we are missing.

Well, if he doesn't show up, you can probably prevail in any case. We'll go from here.

Werehare Inquisitive 3/ Seeker 3/ Bard 3

That synopsis of events was not implied to be done all in one day, yes? Otherwise, Nakoda is rather... noticeable.

No, no. I'd make it around five days or so.

$15.00 Art Ornate Brass candelabra
$30.00 Art Quartz shortsword pommel

$22.00 Art Silver anklet chain

$1,000.00 Gear Spyglass Zane, is this of use to you in your studies?
$50.00 Misc. Magic Feather Token, Anchor Anyone want this?
$250.00 Money Gold Teeth x8 Maelorn is not desecrating the bodies of the fallen, regardless of their actions. I suggest we leave them in, and let whatever temple buries them decide whether to use the gold to cover expenses
$300.00 Potion Potion Lesser Restoration Suggest we keep as a group...who will hold it?
$100.00 Potion Potion of Shield of Faith +3 Suggest we keep as a group...who will hold it?
$150.00 Potion Potion of Spider Climb x3 1 each?
$150.00 Toolsets Disguise kit, masterwork Anyone want this?
$100.00 Toolsets Thieves Tools, Masterwork Anyone want this? Otherwise I'd as soon we just melt it down
$480.00 Wand Wand of Shocking Grasp, 32 c. Zane, I assume
$2,002.00 Weapon Dagger +1 Anyone want this?
$630.00 Weapon Sword Cane, Masterwork, Cold Iron Anyone want this? I don't think anyone knows how to use it, but a Cold-Iron weapon can be useful
$2,000.00 Wondrous Amulet of Natural Armor +1 Anyone want this? For that matter, does anyone not use this? It's universally useful...

Eros' equipment
As a general rule, I'm assuming that we'd bury Eros with his gear, with 2 possible exceptions
+1 Humanbane Spiked Gauntlet - This was part of the loot from the original defense of the Golden Goblin. As a simple weapon, either Nakoda or Maelorn can use it, and its properties simply make it far too useful within the city to discard

1 Potion Cure Moderate Wounds (2d8+3)Had we thought about this, it would have saved Eros' life. I'd say we should keep it.

Eros has a fair amount of cash, which I suggest be used to give him a send-off in style.

Pelican, do you have your new character ready?

Male Human Wizard 8

I'd definitely want the wand. The glass I'd say sell or donate to one of the scholarly organizations for future favors. Zane has contacts there if we choose that option.

Werehare Inquisitive 3/ Seeker 3/ Bard 3

Truth be told, I haven't seen enough of this to get a firm grasp on Nakoda's personality (especially with the absence of her companion), which will have to be re-evaluated. As for the items, she cares for none of them. The rest I can bring up in-character.

Well then, let me shift things forward a bit, give Pelican time to work up his new character.

BTW,I am assuming that the treasure is split as discussed. (Maelorn will keep the Amulet).

That means 1550gp each.

Maelorn will be purchasing 1400gp in Mithril and Masterwork Armorcrafting tools, so that he can spend time crafting a new breastplate.

Pelican? Do you have your new character?

Werehare Inquisitive 3/ Seeker 3/ Bard 3

Anytime there's an attack that calls for a save, feel free to make the save for me, using the character's information since the information is in my profile, and it is part of the character's passive reaction to the attack. Don't worry about waiting for me to roll the save, since it is a secondary effect of the NPC's attack.

Sorry guys, had a run of "go work, come home, eat, fall asleep" days.

Pelican? Do you have your new guy?

OK guys, it's been a month and Pelican seems to have evaporated. Do you want to start recruiting, or go on with who you have now?

Werehare Inquisitive 3/ Seeker 3/ Bard 3

I would not be averse to having another Shoanti character joining. =3

Werehare Inquisitive 3/ Seeker 3/ Bard 3

If you'd like our input on the thread, I absolutely like the Shoanti Summoner, or the Totem Warrior.
