@DM Barcas: Excellent! Well I am all updated and ready. I gotta tell you, I am really excited for the first time John can yell Stand and deliver! Before he fires Iakob's pistol, and then flips it around charging into combat, wielding a cutlass in one hand and the butt of the pistol in the other.
@DM Barcas #2: I was thinking about Doran and Thorns situation. Would they have a different diplomacy DC inorder to become friendly with Plugg and his cronies? That way they could try to work their way into his inner circle? Would it even be possible?

Doran Tidewrack |

Not in the time we have available.
That's not the least bit ominous.
I was thinking about the same thing, John - but it sounds like it may not be an issue, for reasons I'm sure we'll understand all too well...

Doran Tidewrack |

By the way, nice way to play up your side of the story aboard the ship I can’t wait to see how Plugg responds.
Somehow missed this post earlier - glad you liked it. And glad he bought it.

So what Archetypes are you considering?
Swashbuckler seems apt?

Doran Tidewrack |

Well, I've just been going through the archetypes, and I'm not sure what I'll do. Swashbuckler is okay, though I'm not sure what weapon I'd pick up. I'm already down the TWF path, so I would still want a light weapon. I could go with kukri - but it doesn't fit at all with Doran's history, and I'd be adding 1 to my crit range and giving up d8 sneak attack dice, which seems like a bad bargain. Plus, Doran isn't exactly the performing swordsman type - he's survived by being competent and keeping a fairly low profile when he could.
The other I considered was Pirate, but I really don't want to give up the 2nd level rogue talent.
So I'll either stick with Knife Master - and I've been enjoying some of the flavor of that - or go vanilla rogue, for the sake of trapfinding. And I'm leaning towards staying with Knife Master at the moment.

Wynifrid |

I am leaning rogue dip at the moment. Narrowed to pirate or thug, will report in the morning what I decide.
Doran, I think knife master is one of the more fun and effective rogue archetypes out there. I would only give it up if you're thinking of going vanilla rogue for trapfinding. (Unfortunately, trapfinding just makes no sense for Wyn.) If you want kukris, I would stick with knife master and use a dip into a martial class or a martial weapon proficiency feat for kukri, to get the best of both worlds (which could also reflect character wise the character discovering the weapon and practicing with it).
If we remain a party without trapfinding the main thing to remember is that we will have a slightly lower chance to notice and disarm them -- but not LOW -- and will not be able to disable (but can still find) magic traps with the disable device skill. We still have enough people in the party with Perception and Disable Device as class skills, and enough people with some magical capability, that we will be able to find traps, and may find creative means of circumventing them. It can be problematic but is not an insurmountable issue.

Ollivor Myles |

I'm keeping it simple with Ollivor, another level in sorcerer
HP: +6 (4 plus Con)
Base Attack: +1
Saving throws: +1 Will
Skills: (5 points) +1 to train diplomacy (total +8), +1 to train Perception (+5 total), +1 to Train Profession Sailor (+5 total), +1 to train Swim (+6 total), and a +1 to the already trained Profession Cook (total +6)
0 level spell gained- Message
(I thought about read magic, but given our current situation, Message may yet prove to be more useful)

Doran Tidewrack |

Ended up sticking with Knife Master. Here are the changes:
10 skill ranks spent on:
Acrobatics
Stealth
Perception
Disable Device
Sleight of Hand
Sailor
2x Diplomacy
Knowledge (local)
Sense Motive
Rogue Talent: Finesse Rogue (hoping to hit something now)
Evasion
+1 BAB
+1 Reflex
+6 HP

@Ollivor: Nice job with the Diplomacy build up Ollivor, I was thinking of befriending Owlbear as well.
@DM Barcas: So just to confirm, for myself and the others who are not taking part in these skill challenges, we are allowed 1 diplomacy check every day for 3 days: 4th, 5th and 6th of Calistril?

Wynifrid |

Wyn informed me this morning that she would prefer to continue on her course of being a brawler with a side of skills rather than dipping into the full skillmonkey experience for now, so I've taken the 2nd level of fighter-cad.
I did train knowledge (local) anyway even though it's not a class skill (don't suppose I could trade it for knowledge dungeoneering as a class skill, eh, DM Barcas?), just so I could make checks with it greater than DC 10.
As for training Diplomacy, as beneficial as it would be for the campaign, she's just not a diplomatic girl, I don't think. She can be friendly, but she's still more on the blunt side of charm. I can optimize so much, but if it doesn't suit the character, then I tend to err on the side of the character.
BAB and Fort went up, and spent 5 skill points (incl favored class) on knowledge (local) (2 pts), stealth (a class skill for a cad), bluff, intimidate, and acrobatics. Took Improved Disarm as fighter bonus feat, and got Dirty Maneuvers ability.
ETA: On a short break right now, but will post Wyn's activities later for the course of the next three days. She needs to hide the stuff Doran gave her, and she wants to chat with Crimson, amongst other things. Will probably do more Sense Motive than Diplomacy, but we shall see.

Ollivor Myles |

@ John & DM Barcas- Thanks guys. I'm thinking Ollivor has a soft spot or three. Hence his choice of 'targets'. By all means, John, if you think you can help bump Owlbear up to ally then go for it :) We can use all we can get.
@ Wynifrid- I know how it is, sometimes characters push back :) I picture Ollivor staying pure sorcerer for a time, though he might eventually become Dragon Disciple if I can keep him alive that long.

Vrunyar Magmabeard |

Using the Chirurgeon Archetype
+6 hp (1/2 HD + con)
+1 BAB
+1 Fort +1 Ref +0 Will
new level 1 spell Crafter’s fortune
6 skill points Appraise, Craft: alchemy, Heal, Profession: chirurgeon, perception, and sense motive; additionally I was thinking of spending skill points next level in sleight of hand and knowledge: nature since I think Vrunyar would want to learn how to palm small objects and know more about the natural world. Any thoughts?
Discovery Preserve organs
Class Ability Infused Curative

Thorn Syndergaard |

Sticking with Barbarian
Took surprise accuracy for barbarian rage power
+7 HP I believe this is right
+7 skills
(+1 Acrobatics, +1 Climb, +2 Diplomacy, learned and +1 in Know Local, +1 Perception, +1 Pro Sailor)

![]() |

I am going to hold off on my attempt at Aid Another, unless I might be able to swing a success out of a failure.

DM Barcas |

"During Thorn and Ollivor's skill challenge, you can Aid Another (using Knowledge: Nature with a +2 bonus, in the form of advice) on a check of your choice, chosen before the roll."
You've got to decide before the round which roll you want to assist them on. The second round's roll (Profession: Fisherman) is likely the more pressing one to succeed on. Though, you'd be able to ensure that Thorn has no chance of going overboard if you advise him on this first round.

Wynifrid |

Regarding the Sense Motive check with Peppery, Wyn wasn't "attempting kinship." "Assessing authority level" would be more appropriate--Wyn knows Peppery is senior staff but is trying to understand her specific role. Whether Peppery reads it that way is a different matter, but still, she wasn't exactly sidling up to her or offering a drink.
That was also a Sense Motive check, not a Diplomacy check. I'll accept the consequences of failing Diplomacy if I attempt it, but I didn't even attempt it here, so I'm wondering why just asking the question netted her an attitude change. I was just trying to add some flavor text behind the die roll. If I'm going to end up being punished just for trying to roleplay in addition to posting my die rolls, then I just won't roleplay.

![]() |

Bah! I spelled your name wrong the first time. When I went back to correct it I ended up making a double post.

Wynifrid |

Ah, gotcha. Thanks. Sorry for whining -- just didn't quite understand what happened there. It's hard enough to want to try to talk to the crew knowing I'm more likely to make things worse anyway, especially with my die roll luck. ;) (Although it was thankfully pretty good in the keelhauling.) I sure as hell wasn't going to try Diplomacy with that DC, just hoping to get a better Sense check to provide info to the other party members later (which I failed to do anyway).
I don't mind if NPCs get pissed off with Wyn, especially if she's actually trying to provoke someone, but I don't want to screw over the rest of the party by affecting the crew's attitude toward THEM.
Really it's OOC for her to want to try to "make friends"--her whole family was killed, she's nice to people who don't deserve otherwise but she herself doesn't want to get too close (which may account for the rolls--she's subconsciously sabotaging herself...). She looks at people as responsibilities (some to protect, some to work for, some to seek vengeance against) more than as relationships. Obviously she's slowly befriending the PCs but that's an ongoing process.
So I'll have to think a bit how really to properly get her to interact when it's appropriate than just try to talk because I feel I should do something.

Doran Tidewrack |

Doran had a fairly evil idea of trying to trip Rawkins while he's helping wrestle the shark aboard, to erase any possible doubt in the crew's mind that they are enemies. On consideration, however, the following points seemed to argue against the idea:
1. Mechanically, Doran is unlikey to be able to trip John unless he can really take him by surprise, and even then he's likely to fail (would have roll a 16 or higher).
2. Plugg is already snowed by Doran's bluff.
3. John might lose his $hit if Doran messes with him while there's a large shark in the picture.
4. Doran doesn't want to actually kill John, which could be the outcome of tripping someone on the edge of a ship in shark-infested waters.
So, in the final analysis, it seems like a not-so-good idea, but I wanted to share.
And nice shot, Thorn!

DM Barcas |

So, I am back at work. It's good to be back. I will try my best to keep the game's strong pace flowing.
I came back to a notice that I had received a commendation for a case - along with multiple others on my squad - I worked on a few months back. Thorn's player is also receiving a commendation for his help on that case. I will demand that he accept it in character as Thorn during the ceremony next Thursday.

Doran Tidewrack |

Great to hear you're back at work, and congrats to you and Thorn on the commendation! Must have been very nice to return to that news

DM Barcas |

I am working this weekend to try and finish my very last paper for my Master's degree. (Alas, had my contact actually gotten me the information I requested at the beginning of summer in a timely fashion, instead of last Wednesday - two days before the official end of the semester - I would be long-done.) I will try to get an update up tonight while I am working at my extra job.

Doran Tidewrack |

Ahoy, all! Wanted to let you know that on Monday I start a 2-week road trip with the family. I'll be able to post off and on, I expect, but will slow down somewhat.

![]() |

@Vrunyar Wonderful post. I might throw something in while we wait for the others to finish during the build up to the storm. I am going to add the tattoo to my appearance section now.

Doran Tidewrack |

I'm back in civilization now, and will be able to post more easily. I'll be home on Wednesday night, and after that can post quite regularly.
I didn't have the sense that anything was waiting on me - was I wrong about that?

DM Barcas |

I know that there aren't any rule governing breaking a bone on a fall, but I wanted to (a)show that he rolled that (narratively-convenient) 1 on the Reflex save, and (b)give the attempt on his life some dramatic heft. If he could simply brush himself off (not a hard thing to do at 3d6 damage), it doesn't carry nearly as much weight.
Doran has his speed reduced to 10' while the leg remains broken, can't run, and takes a -2 penalty to any skill check involving movement.

Ollivor Myles |

Wyn has my sympathy. I've got another character in another campaign, the guy has a +8 to his diplomacy roll, you'd think he'd be making friends left and right.
But he's rolled enough ones that I've actually just wondered if I shouldn't play him as a mute.
So I feel your pain
