OK cool, so it applies, but I still don't see how you'd know anything happened before she reacts and once she's reacted, it's over. The spell has no visible effect (until she fails to act) and you didn't see it cast. Chicken and egg problem I think.
Agreed. He's not in a good position for his +24 Sense Motive check to help. If they were right next to each other I might make the case that he's super in tune with her expression -- at least enough to know something's wrong. Not that I'm arguing it in this case. :-p

Fondo Barondo |

hehehe. OK then. I have two posts, one that says to stay and loot, the other that says move on (though even the move-on post has identifying magics so there's some interest in staying I think). Anyone care to break the tie?
Identifying a few magics is different than staying around for hours while Nikolay's stoneskin and Fondo's heroism wear off. Not to mention different PC's varying senses of urgency about completing our quest.

Fondo Barondo |

Briar is unaware of any particular meaning of the sword in elvish or any other tongue.
Laori, given the circumstances, agrees easily enough to the most sensible plan. She whispers to Briar before she leaves,
** spoiler omitted **
Laori hugs Briar warmly and gives him a kiss - planted roughly on a raw patch of skin.
Laori again leads, as before, and attempts to open the phase door. She immediately disappears inside and the way seems open for all!
...but
Unfortunately the next person or persons in the queue approach the evil grin of Zon Kuthon and stop dead in their tracks, pressed up against the cool marble despite the warm sun on their backs.
Eventually (I presume) everyone tries to step through the phase door. No one is successful. Laori is alone inside with the prize.
I think it was pretty clear that Fondo was intending for a chain to form. If Laori's doing otherwise, shouldn't he have a chance to react?

Fondo Barondo |

Fondo approaches the mouth and stares it down. He says a few broken bits of Thassilonian passed unrecognizably into Varisian, and whacks himself on the forehead.
Use Magic Device: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 9 + 2 = 19
He continues spouting various combinations of gibberish.
Use Magic Device: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 9 + 2 = 25
Use Magic Device: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 9 + 2 = 29
Use Magic Device: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 9 + 2 = 30

Four pillars carved to look like coils of entwined arteries and spinal cords support the ceiling - nails and surgical tools are embedded in these pillars at key and painful-looking positions. [/ooc]
This begs the question of what would NOT be painful-looking positions for nails and surgical tools in arteries and spinal cords.

"Uhmm...not really. I follow a real God, a god of power and dominion over magic. A god who is more than an emo projection of pain and humiliation. I'm sure your Zon Kuthon is a nice intermediate deity for overwrought noble teens full of angst, but he isn't for those of us with a clear capacity for logic and the fortitude to wield true power. My apologies, but I must decline; Nethys guides my path."
These games are bringing many smiles to my face today.

DM_Euan |

You need a better phone sir! They're just static jpgs. :(
You're 10' from any given target so you'll need to close to do anything and the targets are large so presumably have reach (those arms look really long). Do you have any invisibility left? If not, do you want to acrobat/close anyway? Or delay and let them come to you a bit so you're not alone out there?

Barael de Gare |

I've had great luck with my iPhone up until the last couple of maps posted. I suspect it's something to do with permissions ;)
Barael's spent, so will keep close to group, and will implement acrobatics to get interior to reach potential. No Ki for me.

DM_Euan |

By the way, this combat is, er, tough - and I'm not enhancing it like I have been the others.
So remember, most of you (not you Barael) have the option to deny death thanks to the Shoanti.
Your spirits/souls are protected by the Shoanti spirits against death. You can chose to avoid one death effect/attack/save. It's as if it didn't happen, but only if it's a killing blow/save/effect.
So while things are dire for our heroes, you're not all lying there dead (except maybe Barael) after the acid breath. Maybe.

Fondo Barondo |

I don't see anyway this doesn't become a TPK or near TPK if we don't retreat. If there are any cover-providing spells, Fondo can get Barael and Nikolay out. Either Dandi or Briar would need to grab Charlie.

Fondo Barondo |

I'm doubtful that Fondo can tumble past three high CMD creatures to get to an unthreatened space. Is it possible to use scrolls without provoking? Alternately, is Briar able to lay down some cover?

DM_Euan |

Well, as I mentioned in the other thread, you can step to K18 and save Nikolay. K18 has cover (ever so slight) from the big guy and is 20' away from the other guy. You'd be leaving Barael behind.
However, even if you could get Barael, you'd then be leaving Charlie behind. As I see it, someone is dying this round (unless I roll all 1's) and you get to pick who.
That said, if you'd rather change your action completely - I'm totally fine with that. Post as you prefer.

Fondo Barondo |

Hi everyone.
So, our boisterous Fondo clearly sees Serethiel as his to claim. Partly that's due to hiscleqy thinking so highly of himself. Partly because he and Barael are the two sword wielders who don't arm ready have an artifact weapon. I had chatted with Barael, and he seemed okay with Fondo claiming it out of hubris. It hadn't occurred to me that Briar, and amazing archer, would want it.
I should have recognized that it should be up to the whole party to decide who carries a quest item.
It makes snse that both Fondo and Briar would consider themselves entitled to the sword. Barael would be an interesting "local boy makes good" choice. Nikolay's blade might get a little jealous.
Anyway, if folks would like to discuss OOC or just role play out a party decision, please let's do that. Fondo feels it's his to claim, but he's not so arrogant that he wouldn't back down if his family decided otherwise.
That is, assuming he and the party don't all die.

DM_Euan |

As the discussion over the sword is clearly continuing unabated - I'm ruling it's going on as the party moves into and through the star tower.
We'll leave Laori alone for now, carving up her former ally in peace. I want that scene to stand on its own in case anyone wants to role play in it (more than Barael clutching Dandilion protectively).
So until we're ready to move along, I'll hold that scene for the future. Carry on. :)

I agree - well role played, thank you all!
As you leave Scarwall behind it's time again to level. You should, by my count, be level 14 I think. Please confirm that. You should be level 14 for the start of book 6. We're starting book 6 now.

Wealday Arodus 29, 4707
- The party awakened refreshed, unlike past nights, and ready to face a new day in Scarwall. Majenko remains remains.
- Charlie conjures a Heroe’s Feast and the party parties.
- Making their way back into the castle, they take the far stairs (from the chained one) and fight an easy battle against a flaming skeletal figure, Captain Castothrane and his minions.
- The party then tries to sneak by the chained one, and almost makes it, though his attack through the wall is a miss.
- The upper floor is more dangerous as the party fights a pitched battle with some barbed demons and their leader Nihil.
- As Nihil dies, a great crack is heard and the chained spirit arrives a round or two later to rip into Dandilion and the fight is on with the chained spirit and his 5 spectre henchmen.
- As the chained spirit falls, the entire castle brightens as the very shadows themselves flee into the daylight. The party watches as a hoard of undead of all shapes and sizes flee the castle by sea, land, and air - as well as more than a few Gargoyle Brutes.
- The party searches the room beyond - Kazavon’s private chambers and then the chained spirits chamber where they meet a very helpful ghost being stripped of all flesh.
- The Star Tower proves difficult to breach as Barael bloodies his nose and Briar fails to shape the smooth marble, though a passageway is found on the roof - is it a way in for our adventurers or just a ruse? Laori makes it through and the clock is ticking. Is she stealing the sword and making good her escape?
- Laori returns to the party, temporarily, and leads them into the Star Tower. They meet Ildervok, a Nightwalker, who selects Laori or Briar as the new Curate of the Tower. Laori accepts (as Barael and Dandilion protect each other) and departs leaving the Tower undefended and open to the party.
- The party continues on into the ‘basement’ of the Tower and out into the Darklands.
- The first attack on Kleestad, surrounded by three Gugs, was rather less successful than the second, when the Gugs had been eliminated (one by Kleestad himself).
- After Kleestad falls, Fondo digs up Serithtial - a great sword of great power. Each of the party in turn, handles the blade - and a conversation about her future continues.
- In time, Fondo emerges as the sword wielder and the party exits the Star Tower only to meet Laori more or less coming in. A brief exchange and a few magics later and the party is flying to Kaer Maga

Briar the Lesser |

Taking everything on the list without a name next to it nets the party 57,000 roughly. 5,000gp off for raising Majenko leaves 52,000gp. I'll divide that up evenly on the treasure sheet to 8,667gp each.
EDIT: Er, plus the cash. Yeah, the cash valuing 93,800gp. That divides out to another 15,633gp each for a total each of 24,300gp. Each. ;)
In addition, we have the following items to consider selling:
Fondo's Old Rapier - ??
+1 Holy Longsword - 20k or so
Brooch of Protection - 38k
Charlie's old armor - 1.1k or so
Briar would sell them all, but would understand keeping some as well.

Fondo Barondo |

I think Fondo will be keeping his rapier as a backup. He does have a masterwork rapier to sell, though.
Brooch of Protection?!
I'm hoping to upgrade armor or belt of dex and perhaps get some flying capability (unless party members plan to have some aerial magick buffs onhand), but happy to keep my purchases to a minimum if that money can be used to upgrade others... Fondo is carrying around a 200K+ rapier, after all.
