Karas quickly took an assessment of the scorched angel in his arms before turning an icy glare onto the Dragon and sorcerer. He knew he had to get in the way of further onslaught to give her time to heal. He had to remind himself that the Angel was much tougher than she looked.

He drew his sword, his form changed and he dove headlong into the beings that dared to harm her.

Anarya screamed as the lightning bolt tore through her. Everything went black for several seconds, and she staggered, dazed by the devastating energy coursing through her body. Her disorientation proved dangerous as, with a sickening sensation, the floor seemed to drop out from under her feet. At the last moment before she plummeted into the pit opening beneath her feet, she felt Karas's arm grab her and pull her to safety.

She shook her head, trying to recover her bearings. Unbidden, the light from her now-dimmed halo flashed across her body, beginning to heal the terrible burns now marring her otherwise flawless skin.

Gathering her light into her hands, she skirted the edge of the pit, moving to the fallen Raiju's side as she stepped just out of danger, delivering the spell to the fallen elemental. "Please wake up, Zephyr!" she whispered.

Karas, transformed by bloodrage, ran at the arcane dragon with his longsword and drove the blade deep into the beast. 15 lethal.

Anarya drew on her healing energies to heal both herself and Zephyr. After touching the nearly lifeless creature, he twitched and his eyes opened while tiny sparks flickered through his fur. He made eye contact with Anarya and acknowledged her gift.

From somewhere behind the line of the dragon and sorcerer at the door came a woman's voice, although there was no one standing in the area from which the sound came. "Marks and Shills are idiots and fools / The clever and strong make all the rules / Sharp wits and swords do do gooders harm / Harvest the wealth from the gullible's farm." It sounded like it was meant to inspire and indeed, after the words began to call out, the enemies seemed to fighter better and hit harder.

Maidenhair continued down the rope, getting to 10 feet above the ground next to the pit.

Avelina is up. She is ten feet from the chamber floor. She could jump and take 1d6 nonlethal damage or no damage if she can make a DC 15 acrobatics check.

Avelina jumped from where she was hanging on to Maidenhair's lower limb but lost her footing and landed at the edge of the magical pit similar to the one Tauni had used to such good effect on the ice elementals. She rose to her feet, but then, the slope at the edge of the pit caused her to lose her balance and she slid over the edge and dropped 20 feet. 8 lethal, prone (again)

Zephyr rolled onto his feet and growled at the sorcerer who sent all the magic missiles at him. A bolt of lighting appeared above her and stabbed at her. She was caught unprepared and the bolt used her body as a pathway to the floor, singeing her and leaving the air smelling of ozone and burned flesh and fabric. 8 lethal

Franti climbed down near enough to the ground he could safely drop and moved up next to Karas, eager to try to get behind the enemies at the door to deliver a flanking attack.

PA is indeed power attack, note for the combat statline, I took a barkskin potion above that should still be active.

Avelina should be able to five-foot step away from the pit edge, if she wants. I suspect she didn't realize she was on the dangerous slide zone.

I did not think to suggest that. Since we had seen the same spell in the last melee, I assumed folks would remember it. I'll allow a retcon but it will be a while before I can update it.

Tauni jumped down as well, landing gracefully at the edge of the pit. From his place in her satchel, Cobblepaw let out a cry of surprise at the sudden fall, and Tauni chided "Stop complaining! If that's the worst thing that happens to you in the next minute, then you are truly blessed!" The arctic hare fell silent.

Once on the ground, Tauni moved around the south edge of the pit, trying to get a better line of sight on their foes. As she went, she methodically reloaded her crossbow.

Retcon: Avelina took a five-foot-step away from the slope at the edge of the pit and avoided the pit.

Tauni dropped with more grace than Avelina and skirted the pit to get into a good spell-casting position.

The sorcerer stepped back behind the arcana dragon, locked her green eyes on Karas and blew him a kiss and then gestured and spoke and sent 3 glowing spheres of force arcing above the dragon and slamming into Karas. 12 lethal As she is casting, a green viper slithered over to coil at her feet, ready to strike.

The arcane dragon inhaled deeply and breathed out sending a purple burst of force energy out twenty feet. Karas couldn't really get out of the way of the breath, but the others in the area managed to avoid some of the damage. 6 to Karas, 3 to Ellena, Franti, and Zephyr.

Ellena dropped the last ten feet rather than climbing all the way down the rope, with the same result as when Avelina tried it, ending up right behind Karas and Franti.

A lizardman warrior stepped up into the space vacated by the sorcerer, next to the arcane dragon. He was deformed with twisted features, lumps oozing black ichor, and a bit larger than most lizardmen. He wielded a pair of morningstars and looked as if he might be able to deliver a nasty bite.

He attempted to hit Karas from around the corner of the door with each of his weapons and he tried to bite. Karas' extra armor provided by the barkskin potion helped him when the first Morningstar hit him, but the second smacked him for 3 points. The lizardman's sharp teeth were closing on Karas' arm when something pushed his head sideways enough to foil the attack Protection from Evil saved him. The morningstar wound stung, apparently with some kind of poison. The poison did not have any effect.

From above, near the opening into the chamber from above, a voice called out "Know terror, puny humans!" A small dragon appeared and breathed straight down at the floor, covering everyone in the room in a cloud of screaming shadows. The strange smoke amplified the terror of being underground, surrounded by unknown enemies, and caused some to doubt their own abilities to survive. Anarya, Cobblepaw, Ellena, Franti, Karas, and Zephyr gain the shaken condition for at least 2 rounds.

The dragon had smooth, shiny, obsidian-black skin, with smoke drifting from his nostrils which seemed to dance with a life of its own. All recognized it was not an ordinary black dragon. Only Karas and Tauni recognized its type and only Karas knew much about it.

Tauni:
Tauni recognizes this as a shadow dragon, a dragon known for its breath weapon that can cause opponents to tremble.

Torn by claws and rent by arcane energies, Karas dropped his sword and lashed out with his claws at the dragon before him. They sought to desecrate Her home and her treasures. They would not last this night if he had anything to say about it.

At 1st level, a bard learns to counter magic effects that depend on sound (but not spells that have verbal components.) Each round of the countersong he makes a Perform (keyboard, percussion, wind, string, or sing) skill check. Any creature within 30 feet of the bard (including the bard himself) that is affected by a sonic or language-dependent magical attack may use the bard’s Perform check result in place of its saving throw if, after the saving throw is rolled, the Perform check result proves to be higher. If a creature within range of the countersong is already under the effect of a non-instantaneous sonic or language-dependent magical attack, it gains another saving throw against the effect each round it hears the countersong, but it must use the bard’s Perform skill check result for the save. Countersong does not work on effects that don’t allow saves. Countersong relies on audible components.

As Anarya moved toward the door, she made momentary eye contact with Franti, who seemed to be steeling himself for something dangerous despite his fear. He attempted to smile at her, but it was not his usual bright signal of audacity in the face of inferior odds. She healed herself and Karas and gave both more life and time.

The woman's voice continued to call out verse meant to be inspirational to her crew, but additionally the sound of violin playing accompanied the call. The words came from somewhere north of the door while the violin music came from somewhere to the west of the adversaries defending the door. The violin melody is complex and rich with embellishment, a fast, minor jig. It is quite well done, from an aesthetic point of view. Jig

Maidenhair was still ten feet above the chamber floor and tall enough that she could reach the flying shadow dragon who had just inflicted his noxious fear-causing breath on the group. She held onto the rope and tried to grab the little threat. She grabbed him and focused on keeping her grip on him to neutralize him until she could try to crush him in her strong grip.

From roughly the spot where the chanting is coming from an image appears of a tall woman with goat-like horns above an otherwise pretty face. She has an attractive figure, except that below her robes she is standing on hairless legs that resemble a goat. The woman would have a certain unearthly beauty if not for some fungus like growths that appear over significant patches of skin. She appears in the act of hurling something. A fistful of thorns land above the door, doing no harm and giving off a sharp twack sound. The creature is wearing light armor, with some weapons usually used by finesse fighters. She has a violin in a sling where she can pull it out and start playing it if desired.

Tauni:
Tauni recognizes the person who appears as a fey half-breed known as a Forlarren. The fungal growths suggest it might have a blight contracted from being in the Worldwound.

Avelina gave forth a magical scream that only the lizardman could hear. He barely flinched however, although he did suffer some damage. 4 points.

Zephyr, revived and still able to call lightning did so again, on the lizardman. The lizardman continued to respond to the magical challenges, dodging to prevent a direct hit from the bolt. 4 points.

Franti wanted to try to slip past the doorway defenders, but decided the odds were not in his favor and so he tried to connect with the dragon with his saps. The first nearly hit a nerve and managed to inflict a lot of pain. 8 non-lethal. The small dragon could not take the stress of his wounds and this new assault and he collapsed into unconsciousness. Franti took the opportunity to try to dance into the room. Had he not been shaken, he might have made it, but the lizardman bashed him with his Morningstar, stopping his progress and injuring him. 3 lethal damage.

Recognizing the need for Maidenhair's strength in the melee, Tauni leveled her crossbow at the little dragon in her grip. She released a bolt at it, careful to avoid hitting the guardian. Even trying to predict their movements as they struggle, the bolt flies wide. With a muttered curse, Tauni moved around the pit, getting closer to the main combat.

As the defensive line the would-be thieves set up began to crumble, the sorcerer who had been defending the arcane dragon hissed softly and stepped back as her viper familiar slithered sideways. A moment later, the woman gestured and cast a spell, saying "Relâmpago" and pointing a finger at the three opponents lined up through the doorway.

A lightning bolt shot forth, with a booming crash and a bright light. Franti, stepped sideways to avoid the energy, but it passed directly through Karas and Ellena, leaving their armor blackened and singed and the air pungent with ozone and smoke. 0 damage to Franti, 24 to Karas and Ellena.

Being this far behind the action was doing the paladin no good whatsoever. She called upon Iomedae's healing grace to knit some of her wounds. She then gripped her shield tightly and moved to the other side of Franti, taking an attack by the lizard man as she did so. Once there, she swung Radiance at the next enemy.

Ellena's face lit up faintly as she drew on Iomdedae for healing. She pushed through the door, fearing an attack from the lizardman but having attacked Franti already, the warrior was unprepared for her and she made it past Franti and found herself with the sorcerer who just fried her with lightning. Her blade flashed and a line of blood opened up from her shoulder to her stomach. The woman's face lost all color and her eyes rolled up as she collapsed. 11 damage, sorcerer is negative.

The lizardman lashed out with everything he had, which meant he attacked with a morningstar in each hand and he tried to bite. Perceiving the armored paladin with the glowing sword and shield as a bigger threat than a man dressed as a jester wielding a couple of saps, he focused all his fury on Ellena. Both morningstars got past her defenses and her armor. One had poison on it but Ellena's system resisted the damage it tried to do to her. She managed to get her shield in his face as he lunged to bite her and fended off that attack. 14 damage.

The dragon in the strong grip of Maidenhair desperately tried to claw and bite his way free, but only managed a little damage. Bite hit for 6 and 1 claw hit for 4.

Anarya knew Karas and Ellena were both hurt badly. She could see Karas's wounds start to close but it was achingly slow. Ellena had already begun to heal herself with Iomedae's grace - she knew Karas's need was greater. Her hand glowed as she healed his wounds.

Karas was heavily wounded but through the haze of blood all he could hear was the tiefling's taunting song. He surged through the lines straight into her face before lashing out with a glowing claw.

I suspected as much. I saw the icon moved on the map but no post. It is just as well, since Anarya could not have healed Karas if he had moved first.

As Karas rushed past the lizardman, he took a swing with his Morningstar but it glanced of Karas' armor. Karas attacked the woman with the goat horns and feet. His claw slashed through her chest, and blood dripped out of the gaping wound. 10 damage.

Anarya:
Anarya was looking right at the woman Karas attacked and noticed a distinct moment when it seemed like the claws passed through her as if she were incorporeal. Then blood began to flow. It was so subtle, it appears no one else noticed, but Anarya is sure the thing Karas attacked is an illusion.

Karas:
Karas noticed that his claws did not seem to contact anything solid, yet he saw the bleeding wound. In his raging state, he did not connect this with anything being wrong, perhaps assuming it was some kind of DR or magical defense.

I have to run an errand, but when I get back, I'll post the NPC actions that follow this.

The bard or what Anarya thought was an illusion of a bard stepped back just out of reach of Karas' claws, winked at him with a smirk, continued her chant of inspiration, and drank a potion she drew from her belt.

She then went invisible or if Anarya was correct, the image of her went away. Still the voice seemed to be coming from the spot where she was last seen.

With the battle then mostly outside her vision, Avelina hustled towards the doorway and the rest of her allies. Seeing that Tauni was eyeing her wands, Avelina drew the wand of Ice Spears and held it out towards her wizard friend.

"The wand of Frigid Phalanx?"

Tauni accepted the wand from her friend with a smile. Trying not to be distracted by the shivering and crying hare in her satchel, Tauni searched for the source of disembodied voice. Please, please Abadar! I am your faithful and always vigilant, but I need gifted sight to reveal our foe! Whether granted by her deity or inspired by desperation, the words of a spell, and the power behind the words, pass fleetingly through her thoughts. Seizing on the opportunity, she uttered the words and invoked the spell.

Standard action to cast See Invisible, using a hero point since she does not have an instance of it memorized at the moment. She'll accept the wand from Avelina as well. I'm not sure what that would be to accept the wand. Since she is holding it out, would it be free or swift? Or is it the same as drawing a weapon, so a move action? Also, I think she can see through the doorway from her current square; the doorway seems to straddle two squares. If she needs to be in the other square to see in the room, she'll 5' step west.

Handing off objects is always weird, rules wise. It's gonna come down to the GM's call. The most common call I've seen is that as long as someone is spending a move action, it's fine (either the holder spending a move action to hand it out or the receiver spending a move to grab it off the other's person)

I'm pretty easy to please with handing off objects. I'd generally allow it as a free action provided the PCs are side by side and the object is already in hand. I've been a player with a GM who made the process unnecessarily difficult IMHO.

Avelina moved closer to the action and prepared to hand Tauni a wand. Through the door, she could see Franti, Ellena, and Karas driving into the room past a lizardman with two morning stars and a small green viper. She could see no bard.

Zephyr continued to concentrate, staring and growling at the lizardman. Another flash with a rumble of thunder descended on the enemy and this time, he was not able to dodge out of the way and took a direct hit. 12 damage. He was burned and hurting but still fighting.

Franti considered the viper on his left and the lizardman on his right. He remembered how he almost died trying to kill a similar snake in the caverns below the city and opted to deal with the lizardman instead. He stepped further into the room, boxing the lizardman into a corner. He was not yet able to make his special attacks but he concentrated on getting in a blow or two with his sap. He beat on the lizardman like a drum, scoring two sound smacks. 10 points nonlethal

Tauni took the wand from Avelina and gave a little prayer to Abadar and instantly, she found she could remember her spell to allow her to see magically invisible creatures. She cast the spell and peered into the room, looking for what the others could not see.

Tauni:
Tauni can see a female humanoid, elf or half-elf, wearing leather armor, armed with a rapier and dagger, and with a violin in a sling. She is standing 5 feet north of the door on the west wall of the room, concentrating. Tauni sees nothing in the spot where the bard had been, nor any other invisible things in the room.

The viper slithered toward Karas, who saw it coming and hacked at it with his sword, cutting it (14 damage), but the creature was tougher than most snakes and struck at his calf. It sank its teeth into him, but the bite did little damage and the poison was not strong enough to affect him. 2 damage.

Ellena, Franti, Karas, Tauni:
Each sees a white raven perched 20 feet up in a small niche in the rock wall at the SW corner of the room.

Ellena's powerful attack cuts the lizardman, who is clearly worse for wear, but not finished yet. 10 damage, plus Ellena heals self for 7.

The lizardman's form seems to darken for a brief moment, almost the opposite of how Anarya looks when she directs healing outward. Each person (except stalwart Ellena) within 20 feet, including those on the other side of the door, suddenly feel as if something dark and dreadful were hovering over them about to destroy him or her.

Ellena was unaffected. Tauni and Zephyr resisted the effect, although it still affected their abilities for a short time Shaken 1 round.

Anarya tried to resist but she was already affected by the dragon's breath and this caused her to become so frightened, she felt she had to get away, although the feeling passed quickly. Since Anarya was already shaken, her condition advances to frightened, but only for 1 round.

Avelina, Franti, Karas, and Cobblepaw began to panic.

Panicked condition:
A panicked creature must drop anything it holds and flee at top speed from the source of its fear, as well as any other dangers it encounters, along a random path. It can’t take any other actions. In addition, the creature takes a –2 penalty on all saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks. If cornered, a panicked creature cowers and does not attack, typically using the total defense action in combat. A panicked creature can use special abilities, including spells, to flee; indeed, the creature must use such means if they are the only way to escape.

Then the lizardman attacked Ellena with all his weapons. Both morningstar attacks got past her guard and battered her, but his bite again missed. 9 damage.

I still have to post the actions of the dragon Maidenhair is grappling, but I'll have to do that later.

Retcon: Karas made the save versus the fear effect, due to the protection from evil effect. The lizardman is evil so the protection kicked in on the save and he just made it with the extra +2. He was shaken, so like Anarya, he advances to the frightened condition, but it will only last 1 round.

The dragon held by Maidenhair continued to try to bite and claw his way free, but he only managed to bite the much larger creature, doing little damage (4 points).

Anarya and Karas are up. Each is frightened, and so must flee, but each can choose her/his path.

Frightened condition:
Characters who are frightened are shaken, and in addition they flee from the source of their fear as quickly as they can. They can choose the paths of their flight. Other than that stipulation, once they are out of sight (or hearing) of the source of their fear, they can act as they want. If the duration of their fear continues, however, characters can be forced to flee if the source of their fear presents itself again. Characters unable to flee can fight (though they are still shaken).

Those characters who are panicked will be moved in a random direction away from the lizardman and all other known threats. If they reach a limit to movement, they will cower in place, taking only the total defense action. If anyone has a fly spell available he/she must use that if that is the only way to continue fleeing. If the ropes are reached to the upper level, the character will attempt to climb up them. I will pick a random path and make rolls as necessary, such as climb checks. Players are welcome to post to narrate the character's state of mind, words spoken, etc.

Overwhelmed with a double shift at work so this'll be brief. Anarya flees around the pit to the far side of the cavern.

Anarya's eyes widened at the horrific display emanating from the lizardman. Like a dark mirror of her own lifesaving power, dark and terrible in its unholy glory, it crashed over her friends and seized her mind. She staggered backwards, fear overcoming her sense of duty. Her only thought to put as much distance between her and the unholy warrior as possible, she only barely managed the presence of mind to avoid stumbling into the gaping pit as she fled around it.

Anarya must attempt to either climb down to the bottom of the pit or climb up the rope to get as far away from the lizardman as possible in one turn. The climb DC for the pit is 25 and for the knotted rope is 5. Since she can move 7.5 in a move action of climbing, treat it like moving diagonally. The first is 5 feet and the next (if there is one) is 10 feet.

As for Karas, I need a statement of what his standard action is, since he only used a move action to get to the corner. Technically he could try to get through the door in the west wall, but not knowing if it was locked or not, he would only try that on his next turn if the fear continued (which it won't). He could take the total defense option and get a +4 dodge bonus to AC and forego AOOs. Or he could ready an attack against anyone who came into his threatened squares. The rules are a little vague when it comes to what a frightened character does if he cannot flee further. If attacked, he fights, but it's not clear if he could drink a potion or cast a buff spell or something else useful. I'm going to limit it to total defense or ready attack, since I think the frightened condition should focus the character on flight (first) or fight/defend (if flight is no longer an option).
