DM Grimmy |
I'm not sure of the space but is it possible to have the party positioned so that we can three of us facing one opponent in this area? Where Priscilla is currently located if we move about five feet in seems like we can create that bottleneck. Sorry btw I only have access to my phone so cant move my counter.
Yeah it looks like in between Pricilla and Uurnir, there is a narrow space where only one character can pass at a time. I'll move token for you.
Uurnir Init Reroll: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Rund 1 - Mudmen
Bringing up the rear, Lueck see's the mudmen approaching. As they come closer, he sees them seem to drop through the cavern floor, disappearing.
Perception:
Ares: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Priscilla: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14
Urrnir: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Lilia: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Cairenn: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Ronen: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
Lilia Stinisen |
"Augh, they are burrowing underneath us...make a tight circle, so they can't break our ranks! They aren't going to let us put them into a nice orderly line!"
Urrnir Drahaenn |
Round 1
Urrnir draws her longbow but, with nothing to fire at, hesitates. As Lilia delivers the news she attempts to maneuver into a better position within the corridor. At the same time she speaks hurriedly, still trying to spot the advancing mudmen.
"They may still attack us from below. I think we should move ahead still, try and find more advantageous ground."
Cairenn Bell |
Can Cairenn make a KN check on the mud-men, or was Lueck the only one to actually see them?
"They're moving slowly-- we might able to outrun them, but who knows what we'd run into?" Cairenn says in frustration.
In Necril, he shouts to the skeletal mage: "Are you prevented from attacking the guardians? For the mission of our Dark Prince is in jeopardy, if they destroy us..."
Bluff check if needed: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
For my actual action, probably moving down the corridor with the group, buuuut gonna see if Cairenn knows anything about mudmen first.
DM Grimmy |
Cairenn can knowledge check, he was in the rear guard when they first emerged. Lueck was the only one to see them meld down and start burrowing. Knowledge:Planes is the relevant check.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10 holy crap you are lucky
The skeletal mage replies in Necril: "If the guardians disturb my tomb, I will defend it. Otherwise, I will remain dormant so as not to raise their ire. If you fall, our Prince will send more like you to finish what you started."
Cairenn Bell |
(phew re that sense motive!)
Kn Planes: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
"If you've acid spells, don't bother with them," Cairenn yells. "--and watch your footing, they can try and entrap you with mud, dragging you down and keeping you from moving! We might be able to lure them into the tomb areas of the skeletons-- I believe the skeletons will act to defend their tombs from the guardians."
Cairenn darts to the head of the group, trying to put distance between himself and the mud creatures, his bow drawn and an arrow nocked.
Lilia Stinisen |
"Will those evil skeletons help us? If so, I think that's a great idea, Cairenn! Maybe we should all move toward the closest one."
Ares Valorn |
"As much as loathe fighting next to one of these abominations, that tatic would save on resources and might get two birds with one stone as the saying goes." The aasimar tightens his grip on his blade willing up the strength to fight along side one of the Dark Princes allies. "It will also help us guage its strength."
Priscilla Springheel |
"You know the things after us are probably gaurdians as well and the two might not fight each other, How ever Would it be harder for them to attack us on the cobble stones? Or should we try clinging to the ceiling again"Priss asks as she looks about to see anysign of movement on the ground.
perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (4) + 11 = 15
DM Grimmy |
Ares: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Priscilla: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18
Urrnir: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Lilia: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Cairenn: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Ronen: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
Lueck: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (20) + 14 = 34
Round 1 - Lueck
Priscilla is too far away to notice it, but after hearing her suggestion and looking at the walls and floor himself, Lueck notices a slight ripple behind the wall.
"They are coming at us through the walls, not the floor!" Lueck cries. Before Cairenn moves to the end of the line he hands off his spear and draws his bow.
DM Grimmy |
Ok that first round got kind of confusing. Maybe I rolled initiative too soon. Everyone take an extra standard or move action. I'm not sure anyone but Cairenn really actually took any actions that whole round. Sorry there's no grid co-ordinates, if you need me to move your token just describe where you want to move to. Use the headers so I know when everyone has gone, then I'll open round 2.
The monsters are still burrowing so I guess just get in position or buff or whatever.
I kinda moved people to the formation Ares and Ronen described I just need you to sign off on it pretty much. And make any changes you want to make based on what the skill checks have revealed.
Cairenn Bell |
Round 1?
"I didn't say he'd help us-- I said he'd defend his tomb," Cairenn says drily. "Slight difference."
He takes the spear from Lueck with a frown for the other half-elf's words. "Be careful!" he shouts, when he sees what Lueck is getting ready to attempt.
Not really moving anywhere or tacking actions, since I moved to the place I meant to, already.
Ronen Carst |
Round 1
"It's a sound plan. Everyone head to the chamber if the guardians and Demon's caretaker fight against one another all the better for us. The rest of you set up near the abomination. Somewhere that will force the creature to defend it's tomb. Brother Valorn, Urrnir and I will lure the guardians inside. Lady Lilia you still have my crossbow use it as you see fit. There should be twenty bolts in the quiver."
Ronem will move closer to the tunnel leading to the skeleton priest. Probably about 10 ft from the tunnel. He will keep an eye on the walls to try to avoid being surprised.
Lilia Stinisen |
Round 2
Lilia reacts quickly, firing the crossbow at the northernmost creature, just before it entered melee.
Crossbow attack 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Damage 1d8 ⇒ 4
DM, if I fire before either side attacks the other, I don't think it officially counts as being in melee. If I am wrong, please take four off the attack roll for me.
DM Grimmy |
Round 1 - Lueck
Lueck tries to dash past the mudmen to get himself at the mouth of the tomb and draw them in so the skeletal mage will join the fray.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
Lueck trips as he makes the attempt, and both of the guardians bludgeon him with their mucky fists.
Slam: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
Slam: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
As they pound Lueck with their fists, mud splatters and flows, the arms themselves becoming torrents of liquid rock, encasing Lueck.
Lueck Fort vs Entrap: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Lueck Fort vs Entrap: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
But the half-elf is heartier than he looks... his body rejects the extra-planar substance and he bursts free of the cocoon.
Lueck took 14 damage and made no progress past the guardian, but he is not entangled.
Cairenn Bell |
The penalty would still apply for Lilia.
Benefit (of Precise Shot): You can shoot or throw ranged weapons at an opponent engaged in melee without taking the standard –4 penalty on your attack roll.
Note: Two characters are engaged in melee if they are enemies of each other and either threatens the other.
Ergo, the 'threatens' part of the equation is the important part, not whether or not either of them has actually attacked the other yet.
"Lueck!" Cairenn shouts in genuine worry as he hears his friend yell in pain. "Hang on!"
Standard to start bardic performance, +1/+1 to everyone for to-hit and damage.
Cairenn angles, trying to see the mudman attacking Lueck, biting his lip in concern for someone else, for once.
DM Grimmy |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
I don't thing there's anything I can do but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
In my personal opinion I tend to think there is almost always something to do that is better than forfeiting a turn. That is not a criticism though, just my personal philosophy . I might consider aid another, total defense, acrobatics to move through the enemy square, or a combat maneuver (bull rush would be the right one here I'm guessing) against the enemy to force him into the sarcophagus. Another good option is to delay and co-ordinate with team-mates IC. Again not a criticism just my take on the question since it is one that also interests me as a fellow gamer.
Ares Valorn |
Round 2
"Ronen slip past, give us some more room." He looks back to Urrnir after as he leans down ready to give her a boost. "Bodyguard, think you can make the leap over?"
Ares ready to help a jump check to go over the other two.
Ronen Carst |
Round 2
Watching as Lueck gets punished for trying to get past the mud creatures Ronen slices at the closest one.
temple sword: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
temple sword dmg: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
As the blade erringly misses the creature Ronen shifts 5 feet over towards the skeleton guardian's chamber
Ares Valorn |
Round 2
Ares moves past lilia taking up the spot Ronen just left, then slahes at the creature with his sword.
Bastard Sword slash:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Damage:1d10 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Lilia Stinisen |
Im confused. What round are we on? There's several posts from people taking two different actions in round two, it seems, and I'm not sure who's up, and what round it is.
Ronen Carst |
I actually think it is the DM's turn and then rd 3 starts
DM Grimmy |
Yup, Ronen is correct.
There may be multiple entries for some folks, but the action economy mostly seems to add up. Everyone took one turn worth of actions in round 2.
It seems Ronen's movement does take him through an enemies space though, and require a move action not a 5' step. So I will take the liberty of tossing an acrobatics check for him.
Ronen Acrobatics: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15 Success
Also Uurnir posted twice, once declaring total defense and a second time declaring readied action to attack. I will take the second post (more recent) as her official turn.
After slicing unsuccessfully at the mudman, Ronen deftly maneuvers past him into the opening of the skeletal mage's tomb.
Ares advances, slashing with his bastard sword and scoring a hit.
Uurnir stands at the ready, as another pair of mud creatures burst forth from the walls!
DM Grimmy |
Round 2 - Mudmen
Uurnir's readied action triggers.
The other two mudmen burst into the tunnel adjacent to Uurnir and Lilia.
All four of them heave sludgy fists at the closest intruders.

Cairenn Bell |
(round 3)
Cairenn chants quick words in Necril, and points at furthest behemoth of mud. "Flee, you base creature of mud!"
Casting Cause Fear on the red mudman, Will save DC 15.
"Lueck! I'll try and make one of the ones near you run! Draw back here with us if you can!"
Last round of bardic performance. +1/+1 hit and damage
Lilia Stinisen |
Round 3
Being pinned in, Lilia tried to cast a spell without the mudmen threatening her being able to punch through her defenses.
Spell craft check versus 17 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11
If successful, Magic Missile damage 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (4, 1) + 2 = 7
Unfortunately for her, the spell fizzles.
Ronen Carst |
Round 3
As Ronen comes out of his roll his successful Acrobatics chk he watches as the abominations surround the others.
"We do not help ourselves if we focus on each abomination seperately. Team up where possible."
With that being said Ronen launches himself at the mud creature now engaged with Brother Valorn. The blade slashes with a fury slashes.
Temple Sword Flurry#1: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
temple sword dmg: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Temple Sword Flurry#2: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

Urrnir Drahaenn |
Round 3
The Mudman bursts from the wall with a clumsy swing at Urrnir and she retaliates in due kind, pounding at the sticky surface of the creature.
Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Damage: 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Urrnir: Swift Action to enter Dragon/Scorpion style, Standard Action to attack green Mudman.
Ares Valorn |
Round 3
I have had my shield out the whole time, that's what I have been casting light on it.
He fends off the mudman's attack, and brings down his sword on it again. "Lueck! fall back over here!"
Sword Strike:1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Damage:1d10 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Round 3 Mudmen
As luck withdraws into the crypt, the mudman consider following him...
