Me, I prefer the Paizo boards. One day I'll get into discord I'm sure, but not just yet.

I'm up for one OR the other - I want all my games in one place so I can scan for updates and go. At 5-6am I'm not up for faffing about looking at multiple platforms.

I think it is more what you got used to first - they both have good points, and bad points.

I mean, I have been involved in games on *both*, but I started with the Paizo boards, so that is what I am most comfortable with.

I think this is a lot of it for me too. I see games I want to sign up with but they are on other platforms. The platforms are nice but being able to update all my games in one place is fantastic.

I like that I can post on Discord a bit quicker/easier on mobile but I enjoy it for just having a chat.

What's with such a high percentage of Starfinder being hosted on other forums and platforms though? PF1 & PF2 are firmly here, yet the SFS is pretty much off elsewhere.

PF1 21/24, 85% of tables on Paizo forums.
PFS2 48/69, 70% of tables on Paizo forums.
SFS 13/29, 45% on Paizo forums.

I've been wondering about the discord servers. Is there a reason people choose these over paizo boards? Any distinct advantages? I've always found the Paizo boards to be very well set up:

- character aliases with pictures (though admittedly choice is a bit more limited for starfinder), which I feel works great for immersion
- direct access to stats (character straplines and links to character sheets)
- direct linking to maps/handouts

I suppose discord has a bit more formatting flexibility. Any other advantages?

I play a LOT on Roll for Combat discord, and have found it has a lot of things that appeal to me, and some that don't. Keep in mind that RfC discord is organized very well - which takes a lot of work, and other discord servers do not do this well - and has a large number of very active players and GMs. YMMV.

Things I like about discord:

  • easier to use on phone/mobile device (if I have to access paizo forums on a phone or tablet, I just don't)
  • the above makes formatting text and making dice rolls a lot easier
  • push notifications instead of pull - if I want to, I can set up channels to ping me when someone posts to my game, and I can respond immediately. I sometimes use this when I am GMing so I don't miss player questions. I obviously don't use it all the time.
  • custom character aliases and images (any image) through Tupperbox
  • pinned maps and handouts make going to google slides or looking at someone's sheet just a click away
  • more regular posting in general - people are used to using discord for chatting, so they tend to pop in and post more regularly, which leads to...
  • faster games in general

Things I don't like about discord:

  • harder to go back and look at things posted days ago, especially things like starting instructions
  • requires addons for custom character aliases
  • fast posting can lead to crap posting. It's easy to throw out a "Gorp attacks [1d20+7][1d6+2]" post. Forum posting encourages taking more time...but not everyone will
  • have to mute channels that you aren't playing a game in, or get overwhelmed by the sheer number of notifications. This isn't a big issue on a day-to-day basis, but the startup effort for a server like RfC can mean muting a hundred channels individually

Overall, I like both paizo forums and the RfC discord server. I happily play in both, and bounce between the two regularly. If you ever want to give PbD a try, pop over to the Roll For Combat discord server and ping me (bigrin42#2231). I'd be happy to set up a game and introduce you.

  • ^^ this. I wasn't aware of this possibility at all, and it's a pretty cool feature. I'm still highly sensitive to the 'faffing' aspect, but having an app and perhaps slightly easier edits (dice rolls would presumably still be a pain on a phone) goes a long way.

dice rolls are slightly easier. For instance, on RfC, they use the rollem bot, so an example roll might be:

    [1d20+7 vs EAC]

    rollem wrote:

    @bigrin42 (Danri,Mikaela, Muzzo),
    'vs EAC', 22 ⟵ [15]1d20 + 7

    or

    [1d6+2 F damage]

which to me is a lot easier to do on the phone than

    vs EAC: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
    F damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

even with macros set on my phone (which I tried at one point)

You can also easily set success conditions, so if your GM asks you to roll a DC14 Fort save, you can do

    [1d20+5>=14 Fort save]

    rollem wrote:

    @bigrin42 (Danri,Mikaela, Muzzo),
    'Fort Save', Success! ⟵ 20 >= 14 ⟵ [15]1d20 + 5 >= 14

Bigrin has explained most of the advantages. And some of the disadvantages are specific to RfC. For instance, Cosmic Crit hides all the games you're not in by default unless you want to see them. Most of the other servers I am on do the same.

Other advantages include being able to post images inline with posts.

For me I prefer it for convenience and the speed of the games. Discord games seem to take around 60%-80% of the time games take on Paizo.

For Gameday I only signed up to play on discord, I prefer it so much.

There are drawbacks, which Bigrin has also explained pretty well. I do find that the new Mentions/Unreads inbox in desktop discord is really helpful for being able to prioritize notifications and figure out which channels you want to mute.

I like to play a couple of games at most at discord, due to the notifications that can become overwhelming, and the rest of them here at Paizo, which has the clear advantage when it comes to archiving.

If anyone has a free Level 7-11 character, I wouldn't mind at least one more player in # 2-04: "Future's Fall"--it'll keep me from having to run a pre-gen at the table :) Here's the recruitment link.

Would the following players check in HERE for my table of the Last Bite?

    Agent Eclipse
    Saving Cap'n Crunch
    The Ragi
    Halgur
    AGamer70
    Deronas

Looking for at least one or two more players interested in playing 1-37 Siege of Civility, an excellent tier 5-8 scenario that follows up on the events in Siege of Enlightenment, includes some great opportunities for diplomacy with an empire outside of the Pact Worlds, and involves that subtle Starfinder hint of “what could possibly go wrong?” that we all love so much!

If you’re interested, head on over and sign up on my Sign Up Sheet. The game will be played on the Roll for Combat Discord server as part of Gameday IX, and will make use of Google Slides for maps.

    Silver Crusade

Is it possible to add images into this forum - or would I have to use slidesz - say I wasn't the GM and I wanted to show a character picture or a picture to illustrate something - I got plenty I use for 2-03 for instance.

You can provide a URL to a file, but it will not display as anything other than a link. Most GMs put images in their slide shows.

^You'd have to use slides or post a direct link to the image you want to use. I do the latter often for character portraits, for example.

You'd have to use slides or link to the images via url as far as I am aware. You could link to them in the tagline for a character image, or you could ask the GM if they mind you adding images to the slides or whatever they might be using for maps.

Looking for CaptainBacon to check in to my table of the 3-00 The Last Bite. Please check in here.

    I'm looking for

    Bozzinator
    CtotheZ

to join me at my table for 3-00 here (link)

    Orrian / AFlashInTime,

Please come to the DIscussion area for my table of 3-00 The Last Bite. Either let me know you are dropping or provide the requested information.

    Thank you,

    GM Bret

    Thraega (Dax Thura)

Please come and post in Gameplay for Gameday IX - GM Valen's The Withering World (SFS 2-03)

If anyone is interested in playing the starfinder special for Gameday there are still four open spots in the tier 1-2 range. My table is looking like it will be only combat focused classes and might do with someone who has a variety of skills! This scenario can be replayed at higher levels if that is a worry. The sign up sheet can be found here (link.)

Would Max Deverell (AGamer70) please come by my 3-00 Last Bite thread and check in?

Still have space in SFS #1-19: To Conquer the Dragon if anyone is looking for a higher tier adventure (levels 5-8). Meanwhile could dragonvan - Phil, the Dataphile report in.

Looking for the following people to check in for SFS #1-18: The Blackmoon Survey

    Aerondor - Shokil
    NathanaelCLove - Kal Kinggunner
    Simpatikool - Perimeter Plasma
    Sightless One - Kima

    Silver Crusade

I may as well close my two tables I was offering for Gameday IX, since neither have enough players to make them go. Presumably I flip them to 'Closed' on the signup sheet? Or just delete those rows?

My apologies to the one signup.

    Dark Archive

Don't delete the rows. Send a PM to me on which 2 games please.

Starfinder Kima/furysinger, please head to the Lorespire Complex for briefing.

Please join our table of Gameday IX - GM Valen's Ashes of Discovery (SFS 1-12)

Cornered Rat for Gameday IX. I was going to DM this, but I didn't get enough sign-ups so I originally cancelled it. However, I never did tell paizo to remove it from the google charts list, and we are allowed to late, so I'm trying to recruit for this a second time. Most of the major conventions on Warhorn are done with freeing up characters and leveling them up (Tavern Con and Isydcon are the two major ones left) and we are 21 days into gameday, so some Gameday IX games are finished (mostly Pathfinder 2e Quests) freeing up player bandwidth.

Tier 9-12, come join us for 2-24, Cornered Rat The Game

Oda (Level 3) is looking for another assignment. Season 1 for preference. She knows that Gameday is going on, but maybe there will be a game going somewhere?

I'm looking to start a new game (link), just not sure which one yet. What do people want to see?

There are so many I haven't played, even from season 1.

    1-03, 1-04, 1-06, 1-13, 1-14, 1-15, 1-21, 1-24, 1-25, 1-26, 1-30, 1-31, 1-33, 1-34, 1–99

    2-02, 2-11, 2-15, 2-19, 2-21, 2-23

    3-01, 3-02, 3-05

    Exo-Guardians

    This guy needs his 1-13!

    Second Seekers (Luwazi Elsebo)

Ooooh, I'm trying to get Ceolor through all of the Scoured Stars Scenarios, and 1-13 would be next on the list!

    Second Seekers (Jadnura)

    I'd be interested in 1-13.

    I would gladly play 1-13

    Also interested in 1-13

    Second Seekers (Luwazi Elsebo)

That's at least 6 different people for a table, cool!

It has been a bit since I last GMed. I'll GM 1-13 if GM Kludde does not.

I'm happy to run it! I'll set up a table for the six players above... watch this spot.

@Folks that expressed interest in the 1-13. I've put your paizo profile names into GM Kludde sheet that he linked above. I think that was his intention when he linked it ;)

@GM Kludde - cross posted with you :D

    Will the following starfinders:
    The Ragi
    Altorin Cyrido
    Ceolor Xusha
    Imperator Fexia
    Farol
    Shifty

    Please come over here!

DM Kludde here - gameplay created!

    Devastation Ark

Also my Dead Suns has returned. We are on Book 4.

With many of my Gameday sessions coming to a close I'd like to see if there is any GM out there that can run 1-37 Siege of Civility for me. I thought I had completed all the first season scenarios, but 1-37 is the last one I haven't played yet.

Dang! Maybe you were at capacity already when you signed up for Gameday games, but I’m running that scenario right now! Hope you enjoy it when you get the chance to play!

I haven't run that one yet, but I'd need to finish the two Gameday sessions I doing first.

@GM Mjolbeard, I saw your game, but all my PC's were already committed to other sessions.

@GM Wolffauer, let me know when your games are done.

    Saturday Morning cartoons-style game:

For those who are interested, I'm thinking of starting (GMing) a new game for the repeatable scenario 1-12 (Ashes of Discovery) which is a 1-4.

BEFORE YOU SIGN UP, I'm going to say that this is going to have some silly, Saturday-morning-cartoon style shenanigans. Everything will be SFS legal, you will get credit for it, all of that, and as it is repeatable, you won't be locked out of doing a more serious version of the game with a different character. However, if you don't want your character to go through some silly shenanigans, maybe this game isn't for you. I'm looking for people to have some fun with a silly concept.

The sign up sheet can be found here: HERE

If I get enough people interested I'll start the thread and get everything set up.

Looking forward to having fun with you guys!

When are you hoping to start? I think the special is almost over, which would free up a character I'd like to use.

Whenever I get enough players. Maybe a few days-week.

Looking to fire up a game of 1-30, Survivor's Salvation.

When a recently returned Exo-Guardian goes missing from their regular meetings at a survivor's clinic, the PCs get called in to assist. What begins as a routine investigation quickly leads into the depths of Absalom Station, where the PCs learn that there's much more than criminals to be afraid of.

It's for levels 1-4 and has the Exo-Guardians tag.

It's a fun romp on Absalom Station.

If I have enough to run a legal table, I'll buy the scenario and start prep.
