Skulls and Shackles, set to a steady pace by a new DM!

Welcome, ye who enter here. Your stay might be a tad longer than most, or you'll pass along like all who venture through. This be Port Peril, and I've come to tell you a tale, the likes of which you've never heard before...

I'm here to run an entertaining game of Skulls and Shackles here on this board, mostly after being convinced by a few friends that it'd be the right thing to do. So. Here's my first PbP GM experience, and let's do this right.

Character Creation!
Level: 1

Race: Core, APG, UC, UM, ARG (no custom races).

Class: Core, APG, UC, UM.
Archetypes: All Paizo, but Master Summoner; can't have 13d4+13 lantern archons pre-battle. Just no.

Alignment: Any - but be aware of your choices, and roleplay appropriately - it's all I ask!
Abilities: 20-pt buy.
Wealth: Average by class.

Character Traits: Two, one must be a Campaign Trait from the Player's Guide.
Backgrounds: I want them. Let me know how you ended up in the Port, or maybe some history of how you've been there so long, and unnoticed!

DM Expectations:

- I would like players who can post a minimum of 1 post per weekday.

- I'm looking for characters - not optimized sheets of numbers. While there are some dice-focused challenges, this AP in particular relies on good roleplaying, so that is the priority.

- I'm also looking for some form of party cohesion - a group that works together, survives together. Don't be close-minded, even if you're the most sinister of men.

- I expect at least one post per day - if we're in combat, we'll try to heighten the pace, but I may end up doing combat by narrative as opposed to a gridmap. This is also up to debate once we're decided.

- Mostly concepts are fine with me here, but I don't mind seeing a full character.

- Also: Applications will close in a week's time, or until I see sufficient choices to choose from. Looking for 4-5 capable players.

That said, I'm also enabling firearms as per the S&S books, at Golarion standard. If I'm missing anything in this ad, please, inform me. I admit to being new, but have run many games offline.

Greetings. Henk, son of the pirate captain Two-Saber Smitty reporting for duty.

Henk has been sent on his way by his pirate father to start his own life. "You can't be on my tails for the rest of my life boy! Get out there and forge you own life! Come back to the Shackles when you found your feet, and perhaps bring a wife with you. This creaky knee needs grankids to bounce on it."

Oooo! Me! Me, me, me, me, me, me!

*Bounces up and down*

Me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me!

I been in two started up games already an' they both seemed to have done and died. :(

Pleaze pick me. Please?

*Tries to make big, glittery eyes @ prospective Dm* (@_@)

Okay, enough of the dramatic.

My plans for this Sunny are the same for pretty much every Sunny (Yes Pinky, tonight we try and take over the WORLD!) *cough*

Um, anywho,

Level Break Down:

1st Lvl: Monk(Martial Artist 1)

2nd lvl: Barbarian:(Titan Mauler 1)

3rd Lvl Barbarian:(Titan Mauler 2)

4th Lvl: Magus: (Kensai 1)

5th Lvl Gunslinger: (Mysterious Stranger 1)

Then alternating between Magus/'Kensai' and Gunslinger/'Mysterious Stranger' for all the levels after that.

Yah, that above mess is complicated but, as has demonstrated in a Pen and Paper game, it holds its own over the levels. (^_^)

The current character is at a 20 point stat buy. Is matching the traits you require and other wise is ready to go!

On a final note, and I know this will bring in a FLOOD of applicants, but do you wish me to 'advertise' your game in the old, stale PbP's?

Not that I don't think people wont notice your banner here.

Very much cheers to you and yours. (^_^)

*Looks over @ Henk2*

Here. You seem somewhat familiar, have I giggled with you before....? (¬_¬)

Well I reckon I don't know exactly. been to many a port so I can't remember all the faces

If this is you first S&S experiance you should check out the other games going on, the DMs there have good ideas how to make things easier.

Character matrix: Make a list of all the NPCs and their attitudes so you can easily track how they feel about the characters.

Rum handling: Some use it as is or use alternate rules for addiction and watering down. Very important as there have been complaints about the rum.

Day by day handling: RP is fun, but there is a lot of things to keep track of. One Dm on this Page in the discussiongot very overwhelmed
by the work needed and the pace of the game. So perhaps we play out a set number of days and events before fats forwarding

Yes, I have been reading what goes on, I hope this doesn't hurt my chances but I think it will help make evrything more enjoyable for everyone

Posting this character from another S&S campaign that I applied for but didn't make it in.

Thanks for the assistance, Henk! I've looked into the forums myself, and I think the rum ration will be tweaked at some point.

I might also be sympathetic to the 'moving faster' method, but some things will happen at pace. I'll try to keep us from getting too lagged behind by the number of days.

I also happened across a few useful excel sheets, so, NPC tracking is no longer an issue.

I'm awake with excitement to see what other ideas people can come forward with!

Dark Archive

Do you guys need a "Tank"? How about a Merman Oracle of the Waves? My idea was spawned from the Lame Mystery being that one leg looks like a fin. He can power hop, and like a cartoon, he can fluid travel so he can actually hop on water be it only 10 feet as a move speed, but he can carry an unlimited amount of weight. He could be the Ship's Chief Medical Officer (2 Cure Lt. Wounds Spells),use Mending to repair the sails and purify the food and water as a chef.

Option #2 was "Anchorman" (I'm Ron Burghandy?) a Barbarian Raging Swimmer a mix between Mr. T and Michael Phelps minus the medals and medicinal drug use. I wanted a spiked chain worn around his neck and a lot of "I pity the fool..." comments.

I am looking to make a character for this. I am curious on if I do if I could get feedback on if need to make a different one. I have 2 ideas though the first one is more fun to me.

'Zara is a young Undine who likes carpentry but also the sea. She grew up carving wood but also explored ways to become more in touch with the sea. This is how she gained contact with Shell. 'Zara was thrilled. After practicing to know how to work with Shell, she decided she had learned enough to finally explore the world outside the community. Her mother knew she would leave and gave her a crossbow that the community makes which works above and below water. 'Zara promised to return home after she finished exploring.

She did some work on a ship for a while as an apprentice shipwright but lost it as ship fell on hard times. She has had a very hard time since. She has had to sell everything except her crossbow. She has earned a few extra coppers helping do menial tasks around Port Peril and hope to find another berth. She figures that the Formidably Maid will work. Hopefully she doesn't have to spend all her coppers and be made to leave.

I am going to be able to have the ability to fight up front and not use a lot of summons. I am not going for a killing attacker though. My eidolon is going to be more a shell that allows me to do more. I am making 'Zara more someone wanting to experience the world and enjoys ships. She is wanting to be more the shipwright than lead a ship at this time. I can and am willing to make changes. I was just taken with the concept and this AP makes sense. I do have another idea for a different character if this one does not work.

Sczarni

I am putting my hat in for the likeing She is a Cleric of Clastria she has a 20 point buy she was for another campgain that got shut down after 2 days. she has hardly been used. The only thing I need to change is a trait and make one from the campgin but that should not be a problem at all.

I would trade out one for

everything you could use is in her profile. there is a background there as well.

She was then chosen at a young age Kyranda Flockheart was brought into the clergy at the age of 8 and where she started learning the ways of the Calistrian Cleric. (trait:Calistrian Prostitute (Calistria)) She is clad is a bright yellow binki top with a Silk Yellow shirt over top . she has a very short black skirt on that doesn't hinder her movement and shows off her long legs. She wears a Whip at her hip as well as a couple of daggers on her belt. In times of need she has a stained yellow chain shirt that she puts over her outfit along with a black traveling cloak. Her red hair is down to the middle of her back while in it's pony tail. she keeps herself clean and smelling good at all times. She will sell herself for the love of her goddess at anytime. Her Chruch had put her in port peril just a couple of days ago so she is still getting used to the salty air

Taize was made for one of the games Sunny started in. The GM went AWOL and I'd still like to play her. She'll need some modification [see the notes under character creation rules in her profile].

Info on her race and her class are also in her profile.

Her_background:

The woman now known as Taize Vesper awoke on the shores of Garund during a violent storm. Staggering inland from the beach, she took shelter in a cave until the storm had passed. When she awoke she realized she was clutching something in her hand – a pendant, formed of jade and skrimshaw, the jade in the shape of a crescent moon and with markings in gold, resembling the stages of the moon - an item she recognized as the symbol of Tsukiyo, lord of the Samsaran. With that, she realized what she was. But there was more to it, for from the horns of the crescent hung a skrimshaw pirate ship in miniature and on the palm of the left hand that grasped the pendant was a mark, similar to a brand or tattoo, in the shape of a leaf from which was suspended a single drop of water. Part of her mind recognized both these items; the mark was the symbol of Gozreh and the ship was a model of the Seawraith, vessel of Besmara. Deciding that these items had something to do with her current incarnation she rose and staggered to the shore where she discovered evidence of a shipwreck - and perhaps more – for some of the bodies showed evidence of mortal wounds rather than drowning.

She gathered what she needed to survive from the remains, finding herself gifted with clerical abilities allowing the blessing of the passage of the victims. Upon returning to the cave to rest, she found a magnificent trident leaning against the back wall. Taking this and the items she'd collected, she prepared to set out, though unsure of her location or what direction she should head. As she picked up the pendant to drape it around her neck, she realized that the ship was spinning. As she noticed this it came to a halt, pointing northeast along the beach. Chuckling, she spun it again - and the result was the same. After the third try, she accepted the omen and the direction and has been following it for the past month as she learned more of her new incarnation and abilities. Convinced there is a destiny involved in these events, and wanting to find a way to return to Tian Xia, she has followed the pendant’s guidance to Port Peril and a tavern called the Formidably Maid.

further_background_note:
My intent was that her original ship had been sunk by Harrigan

Dark Archive

The one that got away...Tank, a former Marine nautical officer gone AWOL, turned Mer-cenary,and is currently an environmentalist who can communicate with different aquatic species "fluidly". He usually advocates for his Fish-Kin's migratory needs,Fresh or Salty, but he himself has always wanted to return to the Spawning Grounds of the Ancients. He hopes to tip the scales for more positive naval relations through colinary excellence. He surely believes that his sushi submarine and seaweed salad sandwich is the secret to certain success.

***Out of Character***

If you guys have already played this scenario, what fun would it be to swap ships and repeat the same storyline? I love Taize's name and I can see the depth of her creativity, but I just wanted to play the Tank- Oracle silly and light, feeding the crew and healing if we really are roleplaying. It sounds as if we could jump to Chapter 2, if Jenna and Taize are post-Mutiny.

Cross, I know it's your first time but can you freestyle all of it for us? The setting, the Drama, it should be pretty easy to get us on the boat for one reason or another. I might get left in the tavern organizing the buffet to start, but I just know that unless I had some Hostile Sharkmen negotiation street credibility, the Age of Conan roleplayers, will drown the board with strong creative depth that we never get at our conventions. Everybody is a Gunslinger, everybody hates Summoners.

Honestly, I'm going to read this post game if I make the cut or not, but it won't be fair if they know the White Whale's weaknesses out of the gate and I'm like who's Captain Aheb again?

I do have range. I could play a Halfling Bard Shirley Temple singing "On the good ship Lollipop?"---I'll be good, I'll just DM next Adventure Path. I guess. I'm just saying that if we use different mediums, the collective creative picture can still be a masterpiece.

We never got past waking up on the second day.

Sczarni

okay just for MerMacniac's point of view. it was not this Ap at all. it was a homebrew here on the boards that was set in the Realms

Sam I am! Human Wizard, Fire School.

I'm going to have to put in one of my favorite characters who for some reason has never found a lasting campaign. I'll make the changes to her to meet your specifications when I get back to my home computer.

I present Lilly and Eyeball

I've an idea for an Undine Cleric of Besmara. Born in the docks of Port Peril, she's been seen as a good omen for the Captains who have had her onboard; up until the point where she has abandoned them for greater riches.

Edit: How do you come down on the trait Rich Parents, but flavoured to represent her escapades so far. She's been so focused on riches, that she hasn't grown in experience, which would be the reason for her still being level 1 mechanically.

I am awaiting the DM return PM as to their plans regarding this as well as another PbP.

Depending upon the answer I may, or may not, be stepping out of this PbP to concentrate on Sunny's first (Technically second) Skull's and Shackles game. (^_^)

Sczarni

*Returns affectionate hug from pretty much a complete stranger.* (^_^)

Sunny squeals in delight and, dragging her new found companion races over and creates a 'group' hug with Taize. (^_^)

"Hey-YA there! You look like th' lass me cousin told me about!" She exclaims to Taize. (^_^) Then Sunny looks at this new person she's wrapped her arms around,

"Hey t'ye. M'name be Sunny in'a speakin' of folks, whut might be yours?" She asks.

Just because I may be taken back by m' previous game does not mean I in't gon'a have fun here. (^_~)

Why do good game come up at the wrong time.

no point in applying to this one since I will be on vacation before selections are even made. and won't be home until a week or so into the game.

Seems to be a very happy gathering here. Looks like some are very jolly.

Never got into a S&S game that got past the first day, so I came over here since Sunny's game has lots of good people

"I am Taize Vesper. I am here to follow my destiny in this life"

She pauses "And, perhaps, have a bit of fun while doing so."

Sunny nods,

"Aye, being in'a good mood is all-a-ways a neat way t'pass th' day." Sunny agrees (^_^). She looks to the lass who's enthusiastic greeting had her dragged into the introduction with Taize,

"I see by yer accoutrements ye worship th' goddess Calistra?" She enquirers.

Sczarni

*sighs at sunny* okay sweetie, *hugs her tightly and whispers in her eaer* you know me.. trust me you know me.. *quickly grabs her butt then let's go*

Sunny squeaks, jumps a little, then giggles at the priestess' handling of her. (^_^)

"Well, that be a way o' sayin' 'Yes', I s'pose." She hugs Kyranda back in response.

Sczarni

aye lass we've been around the hammock once or twice looking around anyone else around here that I've been with? henk I have sen before but been with but that can be arranged hey henk? Want to romp around with sunny and me tonight?

I am interested in applying with a Musketeer (Cavalier Archetype), will look up the Skull & Shackles stuff to get the rules on firearms. I wanted to get some play in on a S&S game before I ran one. Will get something more solid up here soon.

Jus' testin' somat...

Okeys. Assumin' people want a Sunny in this campaign as well as t'other one. I be thinkin' o' tryin' somat a lil' different b'teen th' two.

So, Sunny here is goin' t'be a kind of 'Defender of the faith' A 'non' Cleric warrior who's defending the church, but not as 'rigid' as a Paladin. Hence the term Saracen of Calistra. So, I be thinkin' of takin Magus as me favourite class and swinin' a hefty Elven curved blade t' bring revenge and retribution t' those who are folish enough t'draw the ire of th' Goddess down upon them.

Thoughts? Ideas? Comments?

Very best wishes to every one and all. (^_^)

Even better, just found the Buccaneer Archetype for Gunslinger.

Sunny waves at the Priestess departure, though her thoughts and sadness do not dwell long upon the disappearing figure as she turns her attention to Taize. (^_^)

Ah, a message from those upon high...

Sunny hugs Taize for a moment, seeming to simply be just enjoying the presence of the other woman, closing her eyes and relaxing.

Then, blinking her large blue eyes open, Sunny stares at Taize.

"Ah..I'm sorry luv. It would never have worked between us." She laments with a friendly squeeze.

"I fear there be other callings awaiting ourselves and our destines..." She says some what cryptically, before gathering her things and also racing off into the gathering dusk outside the tavern.

Ah, Taize, it would seem our adventuring together is destined not to be. *Waves*...

Much cheers to all who sail upon this PbP's seas! (^_^)

When you leave the waking world and return, suddenly everything's not as you left it. I'm excited to see so many new faces and posts, really am. This is only day one, and so many have already shown interest - I'm almost flattered, almost.

Alright! Reply time.

RobbGobb:

Everything looks to be in order - I'm more than welcome that everyone try to play whatever they're for. It means they'll put more effort towards it, and the party becomes more 'natural' in some ways. Just means if you've no cleric, you need to find a way to heal.

Taize:

I'm okay with your character, as long as she becomes refitted to my creation template. It's fine that you might've been on a ship destroyed by Harrigan, just to end up in his claws later. Adds spice, if you know what I mean.

MerManiac:

I don't think I'm prepared to do that, just yet. Like I said, this is my 'initiation' so to speak, and I don't want to overwhelm myself with changes to the path. Sorry if that removes you from playing or viewing, but it's not within my realm of power. Yet.

Jenna:

Everything looks to be in order. Succinct and enough to work with!

Samael:

Looks good! Could use a hair more on background, just a little, and you've got one point floating for your point-buy, if my eyes don't deceive me.

Lilly:

Everything good so far, except the campaign trait. I look forward to your changes, and expanded story!

Lictor:

I'm not a huge fan of Rich Parents, but 900g vs a lasting bonus, I'm okay with it. It's a personal choice. I'd like to see an expanded summary of the background, if possible, and I can't wait to read it.

Hornan:

I see little statistical issues, but I would definitely like to read some more on him, like where he's from, how he got here, his motivations. You know, things like that!

Grand Lodge

DM:
I had his backstory on the other thread, let me add it to the alias. What statistical issues specifically?

Hornan:

Oh, I meant, I didn't see any. No worries, no frets - can't wait to see the background!

I must say I'm interested in some pirate goodness ( too many watchings of The Sea Hawk or Captain Blood I guess... :) )

[spoiler=BACKGROUND]
Ever since his birth on a ship sailing the Shackles in the middle of a storm, Kiernan has been told he was blessed by the Pirate Queen. His Varisian parents were merchants, offering various trade goods throughout the islands. From the time he could walk, his feet were on a deck or on various docks throughout the region.

Then came the day that he no longer considered himself blessed. At the age of ten, amid a burning and sinking merchant ship, Kiernan found himself near death, with a pirate offering him freedom in exchange for service. The Pirate had already cut down his parents, but Kiernan felt that he had to survive. Agreeing, the pirate promptly took him to market where he was sold to the highest bidder. Kiernan's fighting spirit earned him a place among his owher's gladiators.

For 7 years, Kiernan has been a fighter in some of the most unusual matches, mostly involving flooded arenas with faux ships. He learned quickly too that to succeed in the arena, he had to stand out. For Kiernan, it was adding a bright, multicolored scarf to his outfit. As was typical of his heritage though, he added small blades along one side so that it also served as a weapon should he need it.

Recently, the school where he had been kept was raided by a band of Sahaguin and Merfolk. Seeing an opportunity for freedom, Kiernan fled at his first opportunity and headed for what he hoped was the start of a new future in Port Peril. All he had to do was find a ship that would take him.

I am very much interested in this, unfortunately I am about to head off to work and won't be back until much later. But I can at least submit my concept without the crunch.

Urk, Goblin Rogue (Swashbuckler) - Most likely going into the dualist Prestige class when available. Alignment either CG or CN.

Henk looks rather confused at the proposition and quick departure of the Calistrian priestess before he can reply.

Umm..Er...Hm..Was it my breath or something.?

Born with a minor deformity, Tank traveled with a circus as the incredible "MerManiac" able to Fintastically defy the laws of nature an skim over water with an amazing display of acrobatic awesomeness. His fame and ability to create beautifully themed parties, well-prepared him for ice sculpting genius and introducing nobles to foriegn delicacies that allowed him to comfortably travel around the globe numerous times on countless adventures.

I would be interested in joining this. The character sheet would need to be adjusted for the sane 20-point buy. I should be able to get to that by tomorrow - heading out for a play tonight.

Apologies after raising my Charisma my DCs on my spells go up to DC14 - O levels and DC15 - 1st levels, I'll double check my skills also, but for hit points I'm at (HP 9)(Favored Class) The only reason why I took Eye for Plunder is that I can get free cooking supplies to impress the crew straight away. Once you guys try my Katapeshi Masterwork Brownies you'll make the previous chef "walk the plank"!- I also don't know how to hide this stuff yet so only the DM can see the stuff he asked for. I'll learn, I was so happy that the dice roller worked
