Beginners Box PbP (Inactive)

Game Master Fyrian

So, let me explain. I am a bit new to all this, but I am involved in a few PbP's and have had a bit of experience playing a home game. That being said, instead of trying to join every PbP that get's posted, I figure maybe I aught to try and GM for myself. I'm not very up on advanced rules, races, etc, etc, even though I have access to a lot of stuff through books, prd, pdf's and all that. I am most comfortable with the core rule book.

What I would like to do is this - recruit 4-6 players to run through the Beginners Box encounter and the extras that they have released. I'm choosing this because they are very simple and will help me to learn what it is that I'm doing without serious complications, crazy rules, etc. Ideally, I would like to have some kind of experienced players, particularly people who have GM'd before, to participate and kind of help me along with my GMing skills. But, I have a soft spot for new people to the game, so I foresee a mix of both.

As far as races/class limitations, I am not going to stick with the Beginner Box character creation rules. I've got a little more experience than that and they are just too limiting even for me. That being said, I would like to stick to core races and classes. I have a pdf copy of the APG and a lot of the other source-books, but if you can keep to the core stuff and maybe in the future I'll work my way out of there. We will be working off a 15 point buy like the beginner box characters, however, because these encounters aren't exactly difficult.

For posting, I am very available during the day M-F, and spotty on the weekends, so I would like to see 1-2 posts on weekdays and a post or two over weekends if you can. I will have maps available in Google Docs (home-made, so be kind!) so we can have some visuals.

Depending on how many people we can get on this and what the characters look like I can beef up the encounters, I do know at least that much of how to do things. So please post if you're interested, and don't be scared because I'm new! I really like this game and am willing to learn and if this goes well I would definitely be interested in expanding into bigger and better things, maybe even a full on campaign.

Silver Crusade

I have GMed for the past 5 years and new to PbP, but with online courses I am familiar with the system. I would like to present my halfing monk, named Baris. He is crazy about bones and shiney things, and only by his dumb luck he is not dead yet, the poor sot. I would be more than willing to help out if needed and support you with constructive criticism.

Well, it seems that you might be the only one. I think I might have picked something too simple, most people on here are looking for a bit more of a challenge, since pbp gives you much more time to think and craft your character/responses. I might have to try again with a more advanced module, but still one that's low level that I can manage to GM myself. I'll see if anyone else pops in, but if not I'm thinking of running something like Crown of the Kobold King or something low-level like that. I just don't want to get in over my head.

I'm honestly curious as well. I don't have much in the way of GM experience, but I do have a decently solid foundation on the rules of the system, should that be sufficient for you.

Having people with GM experience is definitely not necessary. I only said that because I was hoping some experienced players could come in and help out. So, yes, you would be more than sufficient! I'll see if anyone else bites and then we can go from there.

I'm willing to pitch in with a character, too.

This ain't my first rodeo though, so I'd be willing to bow out for a player with less PbP experience.

You are most welcome Zack! I didn't really put much of a time limit on this, so I'll go ahead and say that "submissions" will be taken until Sunday night and I'll choose and have the campaign ready by Monday evening, that is if anyone else casts in their lot. For the campaigns I'm looking at three would probably be plenty, but four is ideal more than 5-6 is too many, but like I said in the description this is more for me about honing GM skills so I don't mind bumping up the difficulty of any encounters.

That being said, those who are interested go ahead and submit your characters and we'll go from there.

I am applying together with Kuawen. We are both new to PbP using Pathfinder rules but have a lot of experience in free-form story-based PbP RP (including some GMing). And we are also currently playing some tabletop Pathfinder campaigns. This would be a good chance for us to familiarize ourself with Pathfinder PbP if you would have us.

I will be RPing as Wilhelmina Starker, a Lawful Good cleric of Erastil with the Community and Good domains.
Kuawen will play as Tochi Exos, a Lawful Good human fighter who specializes in the lance (and would probably like to become a cavalier if we eventually get to migrate into the APG character options).

That sounds good. I would definitely like to migrate out eventually. I kind of figure I'll learn something new as soon as I'm presented with it. i.e. Someone wants to play something I don't understand, then I look it up and figure it out. For at least the first short encounter or two I just want to work on my actual GMing skills, maybe after that start letting the characters branch out.

I've retrofitted a submission from another thread - a half-orc barbarian by the name of Bladecatcher who fights with an orc double axe.

Cool, cool, looks like everyone has ideas. Makes it easy for me to pick up a rogue. Or bard. I'll roll something up soon as I get home from work.

Sounds good. I haven't really messed with much of the bard stuff myself, or really played alongside one. I'd like to see how they play out.

Bard it is, then!

Silver Crusade

And I get to play my Air Elemental Sorcerer. Muahahahaha! The blaster of doom! I should have it done by Saturday. I have not opened the beginners box yet, do you want me to look into them or give me a blurb to work with to create my background?

Now that I'm home and am finally sitting here at my desk, ready to make my character, I am presented with a question for you, Fyrian. What are your rules for character creation? I see you requested 15 point buy, but I'm also curious in regards to equipment. Class average, I assume? Any further limits/requests, etc? I know you want to stick to the core as closely as possible. Does that also exclude traits?

You can if you want, but it's definitely not necessary. The way it starts out is very simplistic and it gives the reason for you being there. I'll post the intro up in the Campaign Info section later for anyone who wants to check it out.

I am interested as well but don't know what to do or what character to make. Any help would be gratefully approved. I want to role play but life seems to be getting in the way of it.
Thanks nick

Good question Langford! Here's the rundown on Character Creation:

15pt Buy
Race/Class - Core
Average Wealth
Equipement - Core for now, maybe expand into APG and UE later
2 Traits - for those you can pull from APG if you so desire.
Feats - same as equipment

I don't have much really beyond that. Like I said, this is pretty basic so you don't have to go all out optimizing your pc. At the same time, I'm looking to learn and expand my knowledge of the Pathfinder world, so after this first encounter and maybe a second one that I tack on I may want to expand it, allow you to retool your character based on our current levels and then move out from there into new territory. Some of this caution may be a little unnecessary on my part, I'm sure, but once I get the hang of this I'd really like to do more.

@Nick, I hope this helps, if you need anything else let me know!

So create a character and let you know. Will come up with idea and concept tomorrow ad it is late in England. This sounds exciting. Nick

Not a problem Nick! Look forward to seeing it.

Here is Langsford's bard for consideration. Fluff bits such as backstory and such will be up either later tonight or tomorrow.

Looks good to me Indrick. Like I said, don't put too much energy into the fluff (unless you really want to), it's not very necessary for what we're about to do.

Silver Crusade

Does anyone want to have a connection with my Air Elemental Sorcerer? I am looking for ideas on race and to see if anyone has some ideas?

I am going for a half elven cleric that was captured by slavers when young and has no recollection of his family or even her name. She escaped with only the broken manacle that she holds as a signal of pride. She was taken in by a church and was taught to be a cleric. Her name is 13 as that is all she knows. She adventures to provide funds for her church and also to find something- anything about her past...

Character sheet to be done this evening.

Blood woven we could have been prisoners together or you could have passes through the church

Here we go- I am not sure of format.
Name 13 -1st level female cleric of Calistra CG
Half elf with knowledge and luck domains .

S 14. D 13. C 12. I 10. W 16. C 13.

Fort +3. Ref +1. Wil +5

Melee +2. Range +1. AC 15. Init +1.

Skills. Heal + 10 ( skill focus) Religion +4. Sense motive+7
Others as ability modifier

Feats- turn undead plus skill focus from half elf

Proficiencies- simple weapons, light and medium armour, shields and whip from deity chosen weapon.

Equipment-
Morning star 1-8 x2
Sling 1-4 x2 range 50'
Whip 1-3 disarm, non lethal, trip, reach

Chainshirt +4 AC

Backpack, caltrops, hooded lamp, trail rations x4, hemp rope and wooden holy symbol

Spells
Orisons detect magic, guidance, stabilise

1st level - bane, sanctuary (bonus wisdom) and comprehend languages (domain)

I hope that is all on order. Looking forward to seeing if I get into the game. Thanks whatever hsppens fyrian.

Thanks
Nick

I've got Wilhelmina rolled up and ready to go, at least as best as I can tell (I'm assuming the adventure starts in a place where we'll be able to get whatever extra supplies we'll need for it?).

@Nick - That looks good, though I would suggest putting it into an online character sheet. If you've got $30 to dole out, I would highly recommend getting HeroLabs, it's amazing! If not, myth-weavers.com is a free site where you can create them and you can keep them all there. I used that until I got HeroLabs, both good options.

@Wilhelmina - We'll actually be starting at the entrance of the cave, but the encounter isn't so harsh that you'll need a lot of supplies. That being said, we'll definitely go to town between this dungeon and the next encounter, so if you feel like you missed something you can get it on the way back. What you'll really need is just your weapons and any supplies that your character would need to go into a simple dungeon, I hope that helps.

@Nick, I wasn't paying close enough attention before, but your stats are a little high, you're working off about 21 points if I added right and assumed your racial modifier was in there. If you're not sure about the point buy system, check here and look under heading 2)Determine Ability Scores.

Silver Crusade

Hey nick, I was thinking of creating a fighter or a sorcerer. Could it be that my character helped rescue yours? Which would you like?

Just to get a quick headcount, I'm going to list everyone I'm seeing here and your character (if you created one)

BloodWolven - Baris/Human Monk (or your fighter or sorcerer)
Langsford - Indrick Penlan/ Human Bard
Zack Muad'Dweeb - Bladecatcher/Half-Orc Barbarian
Rockman 1138 - Wilhelmina Starker/Human Cleric
Kuawen - Tochi Exos/Human fighter
Nick Pater - 13/Human Cleric

So far this is what I'm seeing. It's looking like a good mix!

However, I've never actually heard from Kuawen other than Rockman 1138 mentioning them. I'd like to see a post from you saying you're interested.

I haven't had a chance to go through everyone's profile, today was a bit crazy and tomorrow won't be much better. If you don't already have your character as an alias or you haven't finalized your character please do so by tomorrow night. The beastiary or HeroLabs stat block format would be best, or you could link to a myth-weavers.com character sheet. Make sure to check it against the guidelines I put up. If there's something you're not sure about, just put it up and don't sweat it. It's easier for me to say I don't want it if it's on there than to so whether or not I'd be ok with that.

Also, not that I'm wanting anyone to drop, but if you're not interested in moving forward let me know asap! I know I've been a part of other recruitment threads where people drop before it's started, and that's fine. If posting 1-2 times a day on weekdays and trying for at least once a day on weekends (that's definitely flexible) is going to be a problem for you, then no harm, no foul. I'd just rather know now before we start a game and then it's dead in the water before we can actually accomplish anything.

All that being said, I'm out for the night, have a good one!

Muhahahahaha Human no, Halfing yes! I will use a human femur to hit you in the place that will rattle your family tree, to bring you down to my level and beat you with experience. No tall jokes please, they go right over my head however beware of short jokes they hit me right on, I will understand them and they will hit you below the belt. One of two things are going to happen either I will be the life of the party or get kicked out. Who wants to be tickled?

Yes, I did just go there, Baris the Halfing is on board. Did you get my background? Equipment?

Hello. Tochi here. I just finished getting geared up and ready to go. I'd spent about two hours putting together my profile only for the system to punt me because of inactivity, so I lost everything that I had written and don't feel up to rewriting it tonight other than the basics. So here I am.

I will try and get a virtual sheer as recommended. I thought I did use the 15 point buy but I will look at it again tonight. Looking forward to this.

Blood wolven- you can rescue me- it was left vague- any class you want.

Nick

Baris the Monk will rescue you from slavery for slavery is not lawful! I will destroy them with my fists. Oops, did I just hit that barrel full of oil? Well they will be having troubles putting out those flames.

"Here! You, female half elf... yes you, oh I see you are chained let me fix that."

Baris steps over and grabs an over sized waraxe and lands it upon the chain holding the half elf in place.

"Come time is of the essence, he he he, you don't belong here!"

Baris squeals as he leads the half elf out of the camp. Several guards see them escaping and Baris trips 'under' some spears laying on a rack and his unfortunate luck is transferred again. The spears impale the two guards slightly, giving the duo enough time to escape.

"Ooh! Look at all the blood, they seem so surprised! Quick, quick before we get overwhelmed by those oafs."

Knew I'd make a few mistakes, sorry!

BloodWolven - Baris/Halfling Monk (or your fighter or sorcerer)
Langsford - Indrick Penlan/ Human Bard
Zack Muad'Dweeb - Bladecatcher/Half-Orc Barbarian
Rockman 1138 - Wilhelmina Starker/Human Cleric
Kuawen - Tochi Exos/Human fighter
Nick Pater - 13/Half-Elf Cleric

Tochi, good to see you! Sorry to hear about the system, As long as you have it up by tonight so I can review it and make any suggestions for change before we get started tomorrow.

Nick:
Yeah, it's definitely not 15 pt, but it's not as high as I said last time.
14 (5)
13 (3)
12 (2)
10 (0)
14 (5)
13 (3)
=(18)

And that's removing your +2 for being a half-elf, which I can only assume you put in Wisdom. Again, I could be wrong and don't hesitate to explain it to me if I am!

Baris:
I saw your background and the basics that the profile let you see but that's it. If you could put up some sort of character sheet based on the things I wrote up there that would be very helpful for me!

Using the spoilers to keep the posts from being so long, also, I know it's tempting, but if it's not your name, don't look! Especially in game, that means the stuff I'm writing is only for that person/those people.

It's been a busy weekend, but here's Bladecatcher's sheet at least.

Fyrian
My logic - core rule book page 16- All stats starting at 10- I did 14 13 13 12 12 10 then added the half elven bonus to 14. However going back over my sheet I put a 14 in strength rather than the second 12
Should read
S 12 D 13. C 12. I 10. W 16( including racial bonus). Ch13

Points 2. 3. 2. 0. 5 (for the 14). Ch 3 equals 15.

I had read a lot of pathfinder but never played. I will Lower all strength related things tonight once I try the virtual character sheet.

Nick

This should just give you the gist of the crunch. In combat, main stick will be misfortune, cackle, and spells as needed. Out of combat, the great stealth and darkvision will let her scout for the party. Other skills will round out knowledges the party lacks, unless we have a spoony bard, and general useful skills.

Fluff wise, Sefyr is a witch devoted to the goddess of birth, death, and fate, Pharasma. In particular, Sefyr has a strong connection to the 'winter' aspect of the goddess, both literally in that her powers are related to the cold, and metaphorically in that winter represents the end that must come to all things. Not in the oblivion sense of the daemons, but as a natural part of the cycle. It just happens to represent what she is most connected to. Misfortune fits well with the concept, and a follower of Pharasma. Later one, fortune and the ice hexes will further this concept.

Links for an idea of appearance
Paizo winter witch, a bit evil for my tastes.

Here's more what I'm going for.

This too.

This is the character I would like to play. If anything seems wonky, just ask. I promise everything is up to code. Since we'll be using core, witch will switched for wizard, probably divination or illusion specialty. Later on, if you allow APG, I'll switch back to witch. Con will go up one, dex down one, and stealth will drop by four. Other than that, Sefyr should be good to go. I can also do up a rogue/ranger if you would be more interested in that.

Fyrian
Did manage to myth weavers and done my character sheet with the changes for the reduced strength- now do I need to get to you and if so how?

Now we have a team- where are we all from on the real world- I am from england. Will this affect response times if we are from all over- I presume most of you are from USA.

Looking forward to adventuring with you all

Nick

I forgot about traits- are we all using them and if so can I use any from the pathfinder core document - as I don't know which ones are from the apg only?

I am from Washington State, Pacific time, we will see if the time difference makes a difference. This is the place to learn!

@ Lloyd DUDE! It's BloodWolven, now we will have two PbP that our characters are really close in. Baris loves bones and will love your witch! :) :) :) Your first picture did not load. :(

Baris runs around the room squealing with glee.

I used traits for Indrick, but if I'm reading Fyrian's post correctly they are completely optional.

As for location: Pennsylvania, USA here.

Yes, traits are optional. I'll be working through your characters right now and I'll pm you if there's something that needs fixing or to let you know that everything is fine. I should hopefully know what's going on by the end of the night and I'll open up the gameplay and discussion forums. I'm not planning on starting until tomorrow afternoon, but it will be one less thing I have to do tomorrow. Once that happens feel free to rp and introduce your characters to each other, just assume you're on the way to the cave and I'll tell you when you get there. That being said, I'll be on for the next couple of hours so if you have any questions now's the time to ask!

And I'm in EST, since we're exchanging time zones. Just a reminder, I'm really expecting people to post at least twice daily on weekdays, and when you can, try for at least once a day on weekends. I don't want to be one of those pbp's that just fall flat as soon as they start. I'll commit to doing the same. If that's a problem, or if there's going to be something coming up that's going to keep you away from your computer or something, just let me know. It's not the end of the world, but at least we'll know that you're not just dropping out.

@Baris DUDE!! Was going to apply to your Kick-in-the-Door game, but found it late. Hoping we get to play together. Even with the wizard build, you and I will be rockin' the stealth. Glad you agree that bones witches are awesome. *Edit This is the first picture Winter Witch

I'm located in along the lovely snow mounts of Utah, but your proposed times work great for me. I can definitely post twice a day, before and after classes if nothing else. Weekends are also fine. Been DMing for two years now and running my own pbp games since September, both still going.

I can definitely post twice a day, but my time would mostly be limited to the evenings, as my workplace is very not internet friendly. I can hop on when things are super slow, but those days would be pretty rare.

No worries about what time of the day. I understand everyone has a different time of day that they can work off. Also, I just wanted to mention as I'm going through all your stuff, though I haven't decided yet, I don't like choosing. It sucks and I hate it, but it will have to happen. I just wanted to remind you all of my original intentions for doing this, to hone GM skills with people who will challenge me. So, keeping that in mind, it's nothing personal if I don't pick you. I've noticed that a lot of us are all applying for/already in each others games, so at least we'll still get to play together regardless. Anyhow, back to the grind...

Alright, here are my choices. I'm not going to explain them, because I don't want to! If your name is listed here, go ahead and report to the discussion thread, and if you're so ambitious feel free to start rping in the gameplay thread. Just introduce yourselves and know that you are on your way to Black Fang's lair, the rest will be explained tomorrow. For everyone else, sorry, this was hard and like I said I hated it. Just keep trying for other pbp's and don't give up. I've been left out of several myself.

Thanks!

BloodWolven - Baris/Halfling Monk
Langsford - Indrick Penlan/ Human Bard
Zack Muad'Dweeb - Bladecatcher/Half-Orc Barbarian
Rockman 1138 - Wilhelmina Starker/Human Cleric
Kuawen - Tochi Exos/Human fighter
Lloyd Jackson – Sephyr/Human Wizard

Just found out I wasn't chosen so ignore my last message. Was nice to be considered- have a great game you lucky ones

Nick

I should be able to post twice a day at least, Good Luck all! Sorry to you didn't get in Nick, perhaps another time.
