I think the penalty is actually -1, not -2. He has penalties in effect due to being size L and because his sword is still size M (he wasn't carrying it when the spell was cast). Unless I am missing a -1 somewhere?
Summing that up:
+2 (STR bonus)
-2 (sword was not enlarged b/c he wasn't carrying it when casting)
-1 (size L)
---------
-1 total

Arloric,
I just saw your roll, and it says 1d20 - 2. I looked at your sheet and it says that you have a +2 with your longsword. Your roll should be a 9, or am I mistaken.
-2 from being large and -2 for non-proficiency (which I assume I'd have since the longsword didn't change size with me).

And that's fine. It just means we have another round with one maggot left.

Ithilwen of the Myriad Stars |

Unless I missed something, I believe Arloric's roll should come up to 7 +3 (14+2=16 STR, +2 size bonus) -1 (large) -2 (inappropriately sized weapon) +2 (flanking) = 9 :)

Aberus Ocellio |

Oh, right! I forgot the +2 to STR from Enlarge Person, so the +1 (STR increase) and -1 (size) cancel out. And he is indeed flanking.
Nice catch!

Telerin Quenya |

Right now her spells might not be the most effective and her combat abilities are less than spectacular.

We are all 1st level fighters right now. ;) Our BAB's are pretty much the same across the party. You're just more vulnerable because of AC and HP. But your DEX is high, so how about using a light crossbow? That way you can stay out of melee, and still have an attack option when your spells aren't a good fit. Even when you have a -4 for firing into melee, you have a decent odds (40%) of hitting AC 10.
Aberus has a crossbow, and if Telerin were to say something out loud about not feeling like she could contribute to the combat, he'd offer it for you to use (though he's only got 20 bolts) as long as the woman with the broken leg is still able to use whatever ranged weapon she is carrying (a crossbow is one of the few weapons you can shoot while prone without a feat). Others in the party might have a spare crossbow as well.

Telerin Quenya |

I actually took a trait to show that she was more studious that gives me a bonus to a couple of skill checks while getting rid of the weapon proficiences. Pretty bad for combat but I thought it was much more flavorful.

Aberus Ocellio |

It would only be temporary, anyway. Once you hit level 3 you'll have more spell options at your disposal.

Aberus Ocellio |

Just so we are clear, we are done with combat, yes? I assume so since you've moved on (and Uriel's last attack did more damage than the maggot's HP). Asking because we still have a pair of maggots on the map and the round 3 summary didn't strike maggot 3 off the list.

Aberus Ocellio |

You have been baptized into the Maggot Incursion.

Aberus Ocellio |

There is a lot happening right now!
I am trying to work towards reacting to the discovery of Tarendelev's scales, but haven't found the right opportunity yet. I'll get to it, though.

Ithilwen of the Myriad Stars |

I too had a difficult time placing it in a particular time-frame. It would make sense Ithilwen started searching around after she has cleaned herself and the others, but it could have also happened simultaneously. I left it deliberately vague.
Re: the NPCs, I don't think there's any disincentive in taking them with us... Stealthing our way through the tunnels would force us to move at half-speed anyway.

Aberus Ocellio |

We're the good enough guys, then. ;)
(Well. And gals.)

Yup. The time will come for them. Mostly, I just didn't want Asmodina to think I was ignoring what she wrote there since it was a nice hook.
Having the full description etc. already laid out actually makes it a little easier to create a nice RP post around them.

Note for any who might be concerned: I figured Anevia's relationship was unusual enough, even with a company as consciously egalitarian as Paizo, to be mentioned. But he really doesn't care, just led a somewhat sheltered life growing up I guess. It's not something he or I plan to make a big deal out of.

Aberus Ocellio |

I thought it was a nice character moment, Uriel, and wasn't concerned. Clarifying your intent is always appreciated, though.

Aberus Ocellio |

Letting you all know in advance I have some (short) travel coming up. I fly out on Wednesday the 13th on a red-eye and return on Monday the 18th. Mostly I'll be disrupted on Thursday morning and most of the following Monday, but my availability will be spotty throughout.
I'll leave notes in spoiler tags in case they are needed. I am fine with Asmodina or other players taking actions for me, esp. on the travel days, if we end up in combat or some other situation where I might be slowing the game down.
Also, if anyone happens to live in Indianapolis or east-central Illinois, PM me. ;)

I did forget to give Gwerm a voice. There was a gnawing in my mind and that was it. When I get on my computer I will have to fix that.

I've always imagined him being voiced by Jim Cummings.

Now that I am free from an extremely busy, skin burning, day I can read the posts and move us along. Sorry for inconveniences.

Asmodina |

Hey!
How is everyone? This is the check up post. You know, it's the post i make to see if everyone is still on board having fun and enjoying themselves and their characters. And, it's also where I open the Pandora's Box for criticism and concerns.
Also, how would you feel about journaling? It's a diary for your character. Would you like to do it, and can you do it frequently?

Aberus Ocellio |

We may need to adjust the spread in our marching order. The original suggestion was for Alexa and Ithilwen to be 100' out, and Uriel in between them and the main group, but the cramped and twisty nature of the caverns may make that arrangement impractical.

This is my first PBP ever so I don't have a lot to compare it to, but so far I am having a great time with it!
I think we made combat work with only a few hiccups. Those hiccups were mostly us figuring out how to make things happen in initiative order and getting ourselves figured out on the map.
The current hiccup is figuring out movement and marching order and getting us all moved together when not in combat. Since we can only move ourselves on the roll20 map, it's not really possible for one of us to "move us as a group". It'd be kind of a bummer IMHO to have to move our tokens individually when we aren't in initiative.
Everyone has been contributing atmosphere to the game. Story, character depth, bits of background...you name it. Keep it coming. This is wonderful.
Also, how would you feel about journaling? It's a diary for your character. Would you like to do it, and can you do it frequently?
I love journaling and I do it in my tabletop game. I think you all have seen that my problem is shutting up. ;)
I'd be happy to host the journaling site, too, and administer it. I'm already doing that for our TT game so it'd be a breeze to do another.

Ithilwen of the Myriad Stars |

I think marching order is going to be more relevant once we're 'between maps', so to say, which is where random encounters tend to happen. As long as we're all standing close in a mapped, 'tiled' environment, as we are now, manually moving pieces around (while declaring intentions like 'I'm stealthily exploring this area' or 'I'm checking this pile of rocks') shouldn't be too big of a deal.
As for feedback, everything's going great (characters, atmosphere, interactions, you name it)! Having took part in a few PbPs in the last two years, my only concern, for now, is pacing. I believe leaving passive (i.e. initiative, perception...) rolls to you, Asmodina, would help in that regard. Also, perhaps, trying a more 'structured' approach to combat? I confess there were times when I was confused whether I could act or it wasn't my turn yet. Putting the initiative order in the campaign's header and having people post on their turn, while writing a concise summary of everybody's actions at the end of the round in order to frame everything into a coherent narrative IME is something which has worked very well for me in the past.

Uriel Aurelius |

Things are going well from my perspective. Minor hiccups only. I don't know how frequently I could do journaling. Or quite what it would entail, honestly. Worth a shot, maybe. I don't know; I'll go with what everyone else thinks.

Uriel Aurelius |

Forgot to move myself when I posted earlier and I'm away from my PC until Wednesday night. If someone can move me as needed I'd appreciate it.

Asmodina |

What my tabletop group would do in this battle would be to retreat and gather those able to fight to form a crescent around the mouth of the cave and kill each cockroach in turn as it passed through. That way the entire group fights one cockroach individually with the likelihood of flanking.
Also, this group would never go into a skirmish if they never needed to and would snipe from the door. Then I started introducing demons that can teleport. That changed their way of thinking quickly.

Aberus Ocellio |

In our tabletop group's last campaign I played a fighter (a straight fighter w/ no prestige classes and nothing non-core, which is quite doable in PF). Our party wizard would dimension door myself and the party's paladin right next to the big enemies in combat. It was astonishingly effective and stumped our GM for a while. Took him a few sessions to establish realistic and plausible tactics that countered this. The main problem with realistic and plausible being that the heroes learn from each battle, but the enemy can't because they're dead.
Of course, a key component of this tactic is a wizard crazy stupid enough to voluntarily put themselves 10' from melee.

Ithilwen of the Myriad Stars |

I'm currently waiting for Alexa to act (whose initiative count is right above mine). If she withdraws, Ithilwen will follow her, otherwise, she will help hold the line.
EDIT: being a surprise round, I believe it's either/or since we don't have both a Standard or a Move action :(
