Apparently it is nothin' but fluff. Normally I make my only fluff, but I'm curious about this one. The trolls, especially, could use a re-imagining.

I've got it. *indicates his Superscriber tag* It just arrived in the mail last week. The trolls are definitely cool. The ogres are pretty twisted, too, but the coolest "re-imagining" is definitely the bugbear. It's like an entirely different critter now, one that stalks through the night and sows terror in it's wake. Very much a "boogeyman" monster.

Sorry for the delay. My brother flew in from Bahrain (he's in the Navy) this weekend so I was kind of busy. Thanks for DMPCing Davos for me.

No probs - you mentioned you might be busy, so I DMPCed him to keep things going, more or less in line with your and the party's general comments. Hope you don't mind the damage!

Vlad, I notice that you don't post as much as you used to. I know you changed job and might not have as much time to devote as you used to, but you haven't posted on your own Stormreach game for a long time either. I would hate to lose you after all this time. Is this situation likely to persist or is it only temporary?

Grand Lodge

I'll be out of town again from April 24 - May 3rd. No access for the first 6 days. The last 4 will be at my parents' place so I should be fine there- if only checking in once or twice a day.

Aubrey (or anyone else who gets to it first) can run Illes during that time. I'm probably going to be wand healing through the rest of this fight, but I can very conceivably yank that healing wand out of the cleric's hand with my whip. I'd have +3 normal, +2 for whip disarm, +4 for size (+9 for my roll, +10 if music is still active) and the goblin would take -4 since a wand isn't a melee weapon. 15 ft range, no AoO.

Also I brought some alchemist fires and tanglefoot bags. Go nuts!

If anyone has any last minute recommendations for Istanbul or Adana, lay 'em out.

For Aubrey:

Spoiler:

Davos got pretty attached Aylmora during their travels. I didn't specify in his background if she was dead or not. I'll leave that up to you.

Maybe the chick with the crazy arm took her. That would give Davos a reason to go after her.

If she is alive, Davos's faith in his goddess is affirmed and he will continue on with the cleric class.

If she is dead, Davos's faith will falter and he may stray from the cleric class. I not sure what class he would change to. Let me know what you think.

Y'know, Aubrey's campaigns reaffirm what D&D is all about to me; also, they seem to disconfirm all the whining that's taking place up at the PRPG threads. The fighter isn't underpowered - just look at Ripnugget taking and dealing damage. The ranger isn't pathetic - Janosz can hack or shoot it with anyone.

The list goes on and on - and it makes me realise that while the system might be "broken", it is largely so because of abusive power-gamers. I gave up on reading the threads, as all the examples seem to be about 20th level rogues with Improved Feint and weapons of speed or something equally weird. I'm a decent statistician, but the number-crunching bores me to tears. Don't they play D&D for fun??

I know what you mean. I've sullied myself a bit up there, but really there doesn't seem to be any really big problems with the game if played as intended, not pushing the envelope and trying to twist the rules. The big shame about those threads is that there is actually quite a lot of interesting stuff there, but the best informed people are also the most annoying.

That said, Ripnugget isn't exactly the same level as you guys, though his cohorts were.

Are you trying to tell me something?

Grand Lodge

Male Human Expert 5

No, no. But if you read some of those threads, the overall direction is that paladins are completely useless, rangers pathetic and that only morons play fighters - because the wizard deals out the most damage at level 20.

It just reinforces that I play an entirely different game than the guys weighing in up there. I've never sat down and decided to play a class because it deals x damage per round given average dice rolls. I do statistics at school - there's no way I want to break my fun, recreational activities down to math. Gack!

I never managed to pass Intermediate Algebra in college, so yeah, math is the furthest thing from my mind too. I just like blowing shit up.

The previous post, BTW, was meant in jest. :)

Grand Lodge

Male Human Expert 5

I know ;D

Afer all, you've never pointed out how incredibly moronic I am for not playing a rogue with Improved Feint, maxed-out ranks in Bluff and Skill Focus (bluff) and then feint-and-stab the crap outta everything that moves. Because that's what smart players would do...

The Exchange

No peeking, please Rarely Accountant 2/Auditor 4/Waster 30

Don't forget your Ring of Blinking - standard equipment, apparently, for a rogue. Sneak attack all day...

Another interesting thing was the suggestion that you want fights to only last a couple of rounds. "Who wants long fights?" was the question - you want to vaporise the opposition in a round or two. I thought our long fight was pretty cool, personally.

Grand Lodge

Male Human Expert 5

Ideally, I guess we want all our fights to be like the one with the goblins under the bridge. But I'll remember this fight for a lot longer, as it was a lot more fun.

There's also something to be said for the enjoyment of rolling a crit on a maximized disintegrate against the BBEG and cackling when the DM rolls a 1 on his save.

He took a hell of a beating before toppling over. Alwyn has gained a newfound respect for goblins after squaring off against Ripnugget and Manic.

Before we all go trucking off into the darkness, I would just like to let everyone know that all I've got left for attack spells is a magic missile and one more scorching ray plus a few cantrips, wands, and my Fiery Burst ability. As long as we don't get into anymore "boss fights" we might be okay... hopefully. Otherwise, I won't be able to contribute a whole lot.

With a +3 to hit, dealing 1d8 damage on the rare chance that I connect, I'll probably be better off Fiery Bursting everything in sight... which is fine by me. :)

In game, I think we should press on. If Nualia is nearby, and doesn't know we're here yet, she will soon, and either fortify or flee. I think with wands, non-spell abilities and such, most of the spell casters should be ok for a bit longer.

Grand Lodge

Male Human Expert 5

I agree. Vethran's got some firepower left, and Alwyn's just a sword-swinger who happens to be able to cast a few spells. Also, with the wands, we have plenty of healing.

I don't know, I don't get it. I'm mostly avoiding the threads there too (so much for my initial enthusiasm - largely evaporated in the miasma of flames, rudeness and stupidity that pervade such discussions).

The sense I get is that people (a few, a lot? I'm not sure) think that Frank's analytical approach to reviewing the rules was a good thing (and it may well have been), perhaps that no one else can do the same (which I doubt) and that his rudeness was either not present or was excusable because he had good ideas, or was justified because people were rude to him.
