Thanks again. I'll be bringing divine support and a little melee support with this ascetic mystery Oracle with a 1 level monk dip.

Maka checking in, very excited to have been selected. I'll be bringing some melee and ranged fire damage to the table.

@Hace, I know I need to modify my backstory some. Any thoughts on tying our characters together?
Quasit* |
Hi guys and welcome!
What we have REALLY needed is a healer type, so a divine caster is perfect. We've had some near wipes and our healer has basically been the CLW wand we've been carrying around that only a couple of us can use.
We have also needed knowledge monkey, like a bard/wizard type. Fire will work well in this AP, everything seems to be ice fey or ice constructs or ice wizards. :)
Hace |
Oh a knowledge monkey healer? I've got a better divine caster build that works for that. Will morph my character when I get a chance.
@maka that sounds cool. Got any basics for us to work around with? @GM any ideas on how to add us to the party to help out with that?
Findurêl |
Welcome indeed! Both of you will be great additions to our party. The first book was rather tough; a couple of deaths, many close calls (I think all of us have knocked out more than once, just never at the same time), but we've been able to eke out each time thus far. Looking forward to playing with y'all!
Hace |
Ok, meet the new and ready Hace The Hermit. A lunar psychic searcher oracle with a crocodile animal companion. The crocodile fights while I keep people alive.
Quasit* |
Meet Issalissk, the crocodile.
Hope he likes snow!

@Hace, I know I need to modify my backstory some. Any thoughts on tying our characters together?
Just me butting in here, but reading your character background (which is awesome!) the easiest way to tie you and Hace together would be to substitute him for Sully.
GM Sapphire Fox |
here is what I was planning, when the party returns to Waldsby, and back to the inn, yes they will serve alcohol now that the arms are gone, they would be two of the patrons, who wouldn't exactly believe the tale, as Selena stays back in the tower to try and find more information on possibly more details on the plan.
Hace, and Maka would tag along after rounds of drinking and celebrating, and leaving in the morning, unless someone else has any suggestions?
Maka Na'Shota |
Swapping Sully with Hace certainly works. Keeping with the backstory, they could escape their pursuers by going through the portal. One thing or another leading them to Waldsby.
Hace |
I can be Sully while adding some extra details.
Hace originally grew up in Oppara. Not being very strong or dexterous, he could not train to be a warrior, and even with the innate ability to learn to practice magic, he never seemed to show much skill with it. Instead Hace studied by spending what little gold he earned on various books on every subject he could. With is knowledge and innate senses, Hace served as a sort of detective to help the guard with complicated crimes that revealed no clear answer.
While working a night case in one of the less secure areas of town near the river, Hace was quickly surrounded by men armed to the teeth that weren't looking to hire Hace to solve any crimes. Not really capable of defending himself, Hace feared the worst was to come. One of the men dived forwards with a knife aimed for Hace's back, but by shear chance, Hace happened to stumble to the side, causing the assailant to fall over and into the river.
It was at this time that two strange things happened at once, first, even though it was nearly pitch black dark out, Hace could suddenly see quite clearly. The second thing was that a crocodile was tearing into the man that fell into the river before it started to climb on shore and towards the other men.
Not wanting to fight a blood-frenzied crocodile, the men turned and ran, while Hace stood around a little dazed with what just happened. The crocodile moved towards Hace and was soon standing next to him and looking up at him. Not sure what to do, Hace pet the crocodile on his head, which seemed to please it.
With his detective skills, his new found skills, and a crocodile, Hace decided it was time to work independently to catch the big fish that plagued the city. He would investigate the corruption of those in power and bring it to light and continue to do so until Oppara was run by truly virtuous people. At some point, he met the Pathfinder Maka in Oppara while she was on a mission, and well, she can tell you the rest.
Honestly, if we didn't need a divine magic user, I'd totally be a vigilante with her backstory.
Maka Na'Shota |
It's funny you should say that, as Sully was a vigilante before vigilante's were a thing. Sully was a player in the game I originally built Maka for. He was a ninja who had an alternate identity as the "Crimson Tiger" that he liked to leave behind propaganda posters for.
Meeting up with the party at the tavern sounds good to me. Updated backstory below. I was thinking we would go through the portal sometime after the party does. Arriving in Waldsby not too long before the party comes back.
Maka’s draconic nature and ability with fire developed at an extremely young age, possibly at birth. However, she is not sure as she has no memories of her family. She was found living in the wild by Zhen Na’Shota, a monk of the Dragon’s Eye Monastery, during one of his travels. Unwilling to leave the child alone, and knowing her nature made her ill suited for most homes, he took her to be raised at the monastery. The monastery featured a wide range of students, teachers, and techniques, including other kineticists. This proved to be an ideal environment to hone her abilities and gave Maka an accepting nature and a true love of combat.
Maka truly loved her home, yet despite that, she long had the urge to leave. For years, she had had dreams about flying with dragons, flying away from the island. Flying away, but never quite leaving. Then one day, something new happened in her dreams; The dragons flew so far away that Maka could no longer see Jalmeray. They kept flying, faster and faster. In what felt like both a lifetime and a heartbeat, the dragons circled the globe, showing Maka things she had never dreamed of. Maka awoke with a start. For the first time, she had a true idea of the scope of the world. Just how far it stretched beyond the monastery, beyond the island. Excitement overtook Maka as she packed her few belongings in preparation for the long, long journey before her.
Maka was able to book passage to Absalom. The city at the Center of the World did not fail to impress. Maka had never seen anything quite like the city and it’s people, nor has she since. But the thing that impressed her most was the food. The monastery served good, but simple food. Nothing that could even compare to the things Maka tasted in Absalom. What little money she had was spent on food on her first day of arrival. She would have had to sleep on the streets had a grateful inn keep not given her a room for the night in thanks for stopping a fight after a blade was pulled. This gave her the idea of using her fighting ability to make money, so she could buy more food. Possibly her most successful idea to date, Maka made a name for herself in tournaments and underground fights and was able to buy almost as much food as she wanted. After a few weeks, her skill with fist and flame brought her to the attention of a group of Pathfinders. They were setting out on an expedition and needed muscle.
Her adventures with not without danger, which made them all the more exciting to Maka. She proved her worth several times and the venture was an overall success. When the group headed back to Absalom, Maka continued with her journey. Along the way, she got in to trouble numerous times for the sake of those in need. She tended to stay longer than she needed when she did so. Enjoying her time with the friends she made and helping to make sure they would be all right after she was gone. Eventually she made her way to Oppara, the capital of Taldor.
It was in Oppara that Maka met her friend, Hace. Hace was a young man who had taken it upon himself to bring light to the corruption of the city. Maka was impressed by his crusade and joined in his efforts. The pair complemented each other well, and they became close friends as they plagued the corrupt of the city. Unfortunately their antics drew the attention of greater powers, and the pair were lead in to a trap. A trap from which they were barely able to escape.
The pair fled south while being pursued by their enemies. No matter their efforts, their enemies kept managing to track them. The chase was long and arduous, leaving Maka and Hace exhausted and injured. They might have met their end if not for a strange stroke of luck. Snow began to fall as they entered the borderwood. Light at first, but becoming thicker the deeper they moved in to the forest.
Eventually they came across the scene of a fierce battle. An old human man, a troll, and other strange creatures lay dead in an encampment before a magical portal. The portal was surrounded by huge icicles and a fiercely cold wind blew from it. As they examined the scene, they heard the voice of one of their pursuers in the distance. Looking at each other, the friends ran in to the portal. Risking whatever dangers may lurk beyond for a chance to escape.
They found themselves in a strange, icey land. A forest of trees they did not recognize stretched out. The snow made the going difficult, but was falling fast enough that it would soon cover their tracks. A chance encounter with a hunter pointed them towards the local town of Waldsby. Heads turned as the pair walked in to the tavern as Maka loudly, but politely, asked for hot food and tea.

I haven't had a chance to read everything in detail yet but I'm excited about what I see so far. I'm on the last day of a family vacation. We're packing up and traveling back home this morning and afternoon. If I'm not too tired from the travelling I'll read everything tonight.
Hace |
The iterations of my PC were a witch doctor life shaman, an animist life shaman, an ascetic oracle, a lore mystery psychic searcher, a life mystery psychic searcher, and a channeler of the unknown cleric. Divine isn't usually my go to class, and I really don't like cleric, but I think lunar psychic searcher is a fun build and I hope it helps you guys out.
@GM There has been some debate on how psychic searcher works for its investigator talents.
I'm of the opinion that the oracle can select any of the talents listed in his pool of talent options, regardless of investigator level requirements, but I've also seen people say that it is implied that the oracle treats his levels as investigator levels for meeting the requirements. Personally I don't feel any of the talents are so incredibly powerful that it makes a difference to have them at level 3 vs level 11, but I'd like you to make a call on what I can select as we move forward.
Findurêl |
Hey GM, how much money do we have to upgrade our equipment?
GM Sapphire Fox |
as per the last level up, what you have acquired in the game, is what is used to purchase gear, you didn't miss any treasure and Selena will not be continuing so its Collected divided among you 4.
I will see about a tally tonight for a total if someone doesn't beat me to it
Sakitu |
Ok. I updated my status line and stats online.
GM Sapphire Fox |
Total gold from the tower:
4220 GP
2671 SP
3681 CP
to be divided as you see fit among yourselves
Quasit* |
Divided four ways, converting silver and copper to gold as much as possible, that leaves a total of 1130 gold, 9 silver, 1 copper apiece, give or take a copper.
Findurêl |
So who else is interested in that ring of regeneration?
While everyone is probably interested, it makes sense to me that it should probably go to a frontliner (aka Bulvi)...
Maka Na'Shota |
Almost time for our group meet up, very excited.
Hace |
Yeah same, maka. Last AP I really got to play was curse of the crimson throne over a year ago and my group stopped being able to meet up which is when I turned to PbP. Glad to finally be able to play another AP.
Hace |
Is the tavern they've arrived at also the one we are in? If so we should start a conversation of interest somehow maka. Maybe about my crocodile? Lol
Hace |
Issalissk sees the shiny ring and eats it making him an immortal crocodile!
Note: not really. Nice find though, if only I had life link, then it would be great.
Maka Na'Shota |
In my experience a ring of regeneration tends to get passed around, what with all the stabbings. It's best if its normal resting place is on a front liner though.
Maka Na'Shota |
Which is why it needs to live on a front liner. But it's great for spreading the love around for things like traps or an abundance of plans that involve fake deaths with real stabbings. It's also good to pass off to the rogue when they need to go scout.
Findurêl |
Although it'd be nice to have, Fin usually stays back and provides ranged support so he shouldn't have it; Bulvi makes the most sense to me as he's always in the thick of any melee...
Quasit* |
That night, Quasit dreams…
“Look mom! It’s snowing!”
I run to the door and my mother stops me. My mother is Nadya. She holds out a pair of elven boots to me. “Wear these. You can’t go barefoot in the snow.”
“My feet won’t be in the snow.”
“You shouldn’t go out at all. You’re still sick. Come here and let me feel your forehead.”
I go to her. She feels my forehead. At that point I realize she’s right, I do feel sick.
“You have leeches.” she announces simply. “They’re sucking out all your blood.”
“Is it because I’m barefoot?”
“No sweetie, take off your shirt.”
I take off my shirt and she lays me down on a bed. She has a hand mirror in her hand. She lifts the underside of one of my breasts and holds the mirror up to it. There are dozens of hard black creatures attached to me there. I’m suddenly sickened and frightened. She wipes them off me with a sweep of her hand, and they clatter like pebbles, then she stamps them out on the floor. There are more under the other breast. She wipes those away too. I find some behind my ears, and I pull them away myself. It hurts when I do it, a sharp cutting pain. I’m bleeding everywhere. There are small rodents on the floor near the bed, and they come out and begin to feed on the leeches, making cute little whirring sounds.
Now Colin and Nardo and Braden are all there in the room. I cover myself up quickly. “Aren’t you hungry? They’re serving steaks down the street.” says Nardo.
I get up off the bed. Now I’m only about 9 or 10 years old. I pull on a dress quickly and run outside. But I find myself in the halls of a big stone building. Everyone is standing in line for the steak. There’s a girl in front of us who is making them cut her steak and cook it for her before they wait on anyone else. It’s Alleria, alive and well. For some reason in my dream I stand there and wait while she wastes everyone’s time. When she finally gets her food she turns and sits on the table where the cook is serving people and she starts noisily eating the steak with her hands, looking at me mockingly. After a few bites she tosses it on the ground and walks off. I find myself angry because it’s such a waste, and I’m hungry, but no one else seems to care. Eventually it’s my turn in line. Everyone else had a choice of steak or pork, but the cook turns to me and says “Wouldn’t you like barbecued chicken?” This surprises me, but I don’t want to make a fuss, so I shrug and say “Sure.”
He hands me a glass jar. It is filled with a clear liquid and has three bare chicken skulls inside. The skulls are growling like dogs. “How are they even doing that?” I ask Colin. He shrugs matter-of-factly. “They have brains, don’t they?” I’m not satisfied with this answer. “But how do they see me? They don’t have any eyes.” As I say this, we’re moving to another line to get a different sort of food.
Then the scene changes. I’m flying. I do it by pushing my arms down hard, like I’m swimming into the air, each downward push of my arms lifts me up about 10 feet. After each pump I start to sink again, so I have to keep pumping my arms. I’m over a city, but there are trees too, and I have to work to stay above the trees. It’s a lot of fun, but it’s also a lot of work, and I’m worried about getting tired and falling.
“Thora! Come on and help us build a snowman!” says a boy’s voice from somewhere down below. I gently bring myself to the ground, but I don’t see anyone. I’m alone in the woods. The city is gone.
“Nardo? Colin?” I call. Suddenly I realize it’s nighttime. I can’t see very well. I feel frightened. I realize I’m not wearing my boots, so I’m barefoot in the snow.
There’s someone standing next to one of the trees. They aren’t moving at all, they’re like a statue, but I can hear them breathe. I’m terrified. I know it’s a witch. I want to be able to fly again, but I’m too scared, so it doesn’t work. I begin to run away. She’s running after me, laughing now. It’s a manic, nasty laugh. There are black birds in the trees and they burst out of the branches as I run past. I can feel the feathers of their wings beat against my face. It's horrible. I see a hollow tree, so I dive down and crawl inside and try to hide. I hold my breath and try to be silent, my eyes fixed on the opening. I can hear her getting closer.
“Thora… Thora… would you like a cookie? I nice blood cookie? Made with leeeeeeches?” she taunts. I see her feet go past the opening--she's wearing my elven boots. Then I see Nardo. He’s across the path, about 30 feet away, beckoning desperately for me to come. I shake my head, I’m too frightened. “Mina!!” he suddenly cries out, then something reaches out of the bushes and grabs him and yanks him away and he’s gone. My heart is thudding with terror now, I want to scream too, but no sound comes, my mouth just moves tautly and it hurts my jaw.
Then her face is suddenly there in the opening, as if she had been looking at me the whole time but I only just now noticed her. Her face is old and ugly and cruel. Her teeth are sharp. Her mouth is too big, and it seems like she has too many teeth. Her eyes don't blink.
“I have a doll for you Thora. A very special doll.” she says, her voice dripping wickedness. Then she snatches for me, quickly, and grabs me by the shirt. I struggle madly to escape.
And I wake up. I’m drenched in sweat and my heart is pounding against my chest.

I think we should consider selling the ring. Those things cost nearly 100k gold, don't they?

I think we should consider selling the ring. Those things cost nearly 100k gold, don't they?
Wow, I didn't think of that...we could upgrade a lot of gear with half that...isn't that what you can sell items for?
Hace |
My plot sense is tingling about this ring and I almost typed a really long post with some ideas, but Hace doesn't know about the ring, so I'll wait until you mention it to him or something similar before he uses his psychic mystery solving skills.
