The stairway eventually leads down into a natural corridor of stone. The air in here is hot, swelteringly hot, and dry. There is also a strong sulfur smell to the air.
Surprisingly, your recalcitrant black eyed companion is already there, waiting on you. When asked, she shrugs. "There are some shortcuts, but I can't reveal them, or I stop getting any help at all."
Nuts! This place is huge! The last one was bad enough as a timesink - we'll never get there now!
New idea for the wish: greater teleport (psions would know it as greater psychoport) to the entrance pit after we get done with Cell Number 238!

Edit: Nuts again! "Interplanar travel is not possible."
Arrggh!

"Walking is good exercise!"

Adraniel |

Sorry guys the wireless here is spotty and I hate posting with my phone. Use me as needed back to normal posting on Monday.

Connor of McIntyre |

Thanks for the update, Adran.
Meanwhile, back at the lava gorge - how would an only-magic team at our 6th Level handle this? Gaseous form? Resist Energy: fire? Protection from energy: fire? Animate rope?

Flann Swallowtail |

Since you were using Energy Wall, I was thinking of Wall of Stone but it would only be 1 or 2 inches thick, and too short by more than half.
The 20' vertical drop is tempting for a swing. We would want to anchor 20' of rope 10' up from where we start, and it would just reach from one end to the other. Your feet would be about 4' from the surface of the lava at the bottom of the swing if my calculations are correct...

Connor of McIntyre |

If everybody's ready for this, I'll start the rolls.
Adran and Flann are about 60-80 lbs each, right? And Volita can do her own flight rolls. Even with an empty Bag of Storage Type I, this might be two flights. Depends on how much Telv weighs.

*Telv |

If you have wall of stone, why not just make a bridge across the gap?

Flann Swallowtail |

If you have wall of stone, why not just make a bridge across the gap?
we don't, it's a spell. We're psionic, and the question was "what if we were magic?" Also, at our level, we could only make a 30-foot wall, which per the rules, would buckle under its own weight unless it were arched, which halves its length.
Telv has a climb speed of 10' and I can pretty much auto the double speed at -5, so it would take me about 5 rounds in total to get across; less if I could "brachiate" across the obstructions.
It would be trivial to keep Telv alive if he could carry Flann. Could very likely even stave off digestion if that's the catch to resolving a question of hands-free climbing and slimes.
How does holding your breath affect psionic focus and/or manifesting powers?

Flann Swallowtail |

There's an auditory (and material) Display but I don't think it's Flann actually humming:
Auditory
A bass-pitched hum issues from the manifester’s vicinity or in the vicinity of the power’s subject (manifester’s choice), eerily akin to many deep-pitched voices. The sound grows in a second from hardly noticeable to as loud as a shout strident enough to be heard within 100 feet. At the manifester’s option, the instantaneous sound can be so soft that it can be heard only within 15 feet with a successful DC 10 Listen check. Some powers describe unique auditory displays.

Connor of McIntyre |

Adran's back! :)
Anyway, I wanted to do the flight-across-the-magma anyway. And despite Mr. Dicebot, I managed it! So we have 3/5 across.
Flann and Telv, you can try your across-the-ceiling trick, or Connor can pop some dorjes of body adjustment and come back. Two more energy walls would get him down to single-digit psionic points, however. Plus all those rolls for Concentration, Fly, and damage.

Connor of McIntyre |

I think we're waiting on mdt. We're all just talking and walking down the cave tunnels.

Connor of McIntyre |

Having a little trouble visualizing right now...our characters are going through lava tunnels around 102F, but in North Carolina we're having our second snowstorm this morning and I'm watching fat flakes falling in 31F weather.
:)

*Telv |

It's warm here in Iowa today: it was 2 degrees f this morning when I went to work.

Adraniel |

Hey guys. Going on Vacation tomorrow. Will be on a cruise so no access. Its a 5 day so I will check back in on the 26th. Please bot me and move us forward, oh and try and keep me alive :)

Connor of McIntyre |

And we have our volunteer meatshield! Whew! I was getting low on psionic power points for the astral constructs!

*Telv |

"I can't imagine a shield of meat being of any use."

mdt |

To my games,
I'm on steroids and antibiotics. I've been cycling being well and sick since Christmas, and it appears my lungs were trying to develop pneumonia again. So bear with me and apologies for not posting as regularly as I could have, been a lot more tired/distracted than I realized.

Flann Swallowtail |

Tuck in and take care. Thanks for the heads up.

Adraniel |

I'm back, but looks like MGT is down a bit so I will be catching up on my games and work today regular posting to resume monday for me :)

Connor of McIntyre |

Sorry to hear that you're sick, mdt. I'll be praying for you!

mdt |

Hi all,
Feeling better, which is good, because I leave on vacation today. Getting sick the week before vacation sucks.
I'll be driving all day today, but will begin vacation posting Thursday. Going to be a bit of a boring vacation (visiting in-laws in the boondocks, so not much to do). Should be able to post frequently.
MDT

Connor of McIntyre |

Glad you're feeling better.

Connor of McIntyre |

You feeling okay, mdt? My church was talking about the flu that's going around this winter. Apparently a real contagion.

Connor of McIntyre |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Hey guys, start praying for mdt. Either his pneumonia has gotten worse or he's running around with some other major problem. But I hope he feels better soon. This winter in 2018 USA is bad in the upper NorthEast. I'm pretty well off in North Carolina, it's only been freezing every night, no snow or sleet to worry about, and I take lots of vitamins and colloidal silver to ward off the colds and flu.

*Telv |

I know that this weekend here in Iowa we're supposed to get 7-8 inches of snow.

Connor of McIntyre |

Yeah, my aunt has been posting all the warnings of continuous snow on Facebook.
Makes me think mdt might have a "water plane" of frozen precipitation after this.

mdt |

Sorry everyone, as I said before, I was on vacation, and my wife wanted us to do things all the time, so I didn't have time to post. Plus I got food poisoning Wednesday, so spent the last 3 days of vacation with stomach cramps and staying near a bathroom. :(

Flann Swallowtail |

Not being a mdt-cicle is apology enough.
Glad you're back, and not just so we get updates.

Connor of McIntyre |

Aaahh! Goblins in the Pazio server room again! Get some unpaid interns with butterfly nets in there, pronto!

Connor of McIntyre |

Are we at Cell #101 or 151 by now? I'm about ready to take off at a sprint, these cells do not matter to our destination (#198 for Volita, #238 for the rest of us), and I'm still worried that we've used up more than half our time already.

Connor of McIntyre |

I'm not recognizing any of those numbers as being relevant to us. (198 & 234)
Also, each Pazio.com page is taking me 30 seconds to bring up! I'm on cable modem, 20/1 bandwidth. I suspect goblins in the server room again.
Let's run, run, run to Cell 198, leave Volita there, and get to the next level!

Connor of McIntyre |

Anybody bring any torches? Connor went fuel-less light sources a long time ago. Now we need something to keep warm with.
Connor could reverse-engineer his bullseye lantern with crystal light back to burning the oil he carries, but a lantern doesn't give off much heat.

Flann Swallowtail |

Flann never had much cargo.
There's gauze and brandy in his Chirurgeon's Kit. Also, Flann's armor is made of wood.

Connor of McIntyre |

Flann's armor is made of wood.
Burn the armor! Aaaahh, that's a nice fire...
Looking through the SRD, there's only the survivor’s sleeping bag. Connor's going to get two of those when we get out of here.
Apparently we're all supposed to be able to manifest adapt body for this dungeon (i.e., 9th Level).

Flann Swallowtail |

Nah, tabletop RPGs are all about preempting all challenges by doing hours of homework to construct a delicate balance of unrelated feats, gear, and spells. Like the portable hole / bag of holding arrow of instant destruction.

*Telv |

Telv can only manifest destiny!

Connor of McIntyre |

If this was an all-magic crew I think silent image (bard 1, sorcerer/wizard 1) would be used to duplicate the figurine on our side. It's got a duration of concentration, but being Level 1, would be fairly simple to implement multiple times.

Flann Swallowtail |

Druid could probably make it work too.

Connor of McIntyre |

Everybody okay? I know Adran said he had a trip to go on.

Flann Swallowtail |

I'm all good.

*Telv |

Still here.

Connor of McIntyre |

I thought Telv had a limited number of times he could switch back from "elf" form to "ooze" form?
Connor was planning on making a rope-pull up to the platform on the right, above the chilling water. He doesn't have a block-and-tackle, or any hemp rope left, so I was going to have him use multiple pitons with some created rope via ectoplasmic creation. Telv could have used the bag of storage again, and once he was up near the ceiling, one of us winged folk could have retrieved him.

Connor of McIntyre |

From South-East to East to North-East:
Vase with flowers - to reveal a hidden room to the East?
Hawk - if you can fly, make this and put into the center-tile of the room to make the big room more palatable?
Woman with flowers - for the room to the North? (not seen yet)
So really, just two choices: vase with flowers, or hawk? We're pressed for time, not looters, so which is the quickest way out of here? We could just ignore the vase-with-flowers and the hawk and just proceed North to the next room up the stairs with the water in the middle. The woman-with-flowers must be for the room to the North, to lead...somewhere.
