Grand Lodge

The first time (and last time) that I have ever had my character die in combat came about three months ago. My Halfling Cavalier was part of a six-member party in The Accursed Halls module. Our party had somehow managed to find the exit and decided to work our way backwards through the halls. Unfortunately, we had a wight to our front, and an incorporeal creature to our flank. My wolf mount was to scared, but I managed to do something about that. However, since I was just a first-level Cavalier, I didn't have the gold (or even knew about cold iron weapons until then) to purchase the appropriate weapons to do proper damage to the Wight. Unfortunately, that did leave my Cavalier open to having a level drained, effectively killing him.

And that is how a rookie mistake killed my Halfling Cavalier.

How did your characters die? How emotionally connected were you to yours?

Maximilian "Max" Maximus.

His End:
I was very attached to him. Grew him from level 4 to 16... Killed an orc chief and took his greataxe as his trophy and weapon of choice. He was a fighter I had way back when in what was only my third campaign. Our party of five ended up going against two strange armored creatures (GM creations) and in a fool hearty attempt to rescue the groups rouge he charged in at both of them (as was his way) unfortunately these things were way stronger than we had initially thought and max ended up on the ground trying dead... Cue breath of life from my very helpful cleric. Then cue getting chopped to death again... Then a time reversing belt thing that my cleric had (He was good at his job) got me alive again...

We had decided to retreat but Max had to stand up and run... He ended up eating an AoO and then eating another one to get away but he managed to survive due solely to the fact that he had endurance and diehard... But sadly his staggered form could not get far enough away from the creatures in time and they both converged on him at once. Knowing that his time was at an end he chose to turn and cleave both of the creatures in an attempt to maybe take one of them down and to at least buy more time for his comrades escape... He did very good damage but not enough to stop them and he was cut down. Everyone else escaped. He was forever remembered by the players and the PC's.


My last character deaths met their end when my players managed to pay for the raise dead spells from a local temple.

Pathfinder Lost Omens Subscriber

ADND I had just made a character(fighter), and was trying to to level up as i was low leveled compared to the rest of the group and an encounter we did on the first day got me a level up. We had the highest level fighter training me, they trained me by having me fight some wolves... I lost(too many low rolls).


My poor little Halfling Cavalier ate a critted Spirited Charge from a mammoth rider with a Large Impact Lance.


Our party's DMPC was killed when AP instructions explicitly dictated that this pair of powerful monsters would attack the unconscious body of the character fulfilling a specific role. We hadn't really expected the monsters to do that, and when we realized what they were doing, we were too late, because they acted on the same initiative.

My rogue was killed by a pair of PC ex-paladins getting AOOs while she ran. I'm fairly happy that my character managed to warn everyone else about the situation, though. The DM had planned to let the paladins' players corrupt the paladins via an encounter with goblin civilians, but we never reached it.


My 3rd level Wood Elf Inquisitor died holding off 3 Wargs, 3 Orc Fighters, 2 Werewolves, 2 Hill Giants and a Winter Wolf so the party could get away. Other two party members were an elf Paladin and an Elf Wizard, also third level.

Note that my GM plays a very 'the world is there and if you stumble in the wrong place you meet what you meet' style game. We knew this and have played this way for a long time.

We were following warg tracks for several days, hunting them to cull their numbers as they were harassing our home town.

The tracks led us deep up into the mountains along some hidden trails to what appeared to be an old, abandoned temple to a religion none of us recognized (it was the Forgotten Realms setting, Mulhorondi pantheon). As we explored the temple we were attacked by some large wolves (not the wargs we were seeking) that we dealt with easily. After that fight I spotted the warg tracks and followed them up to a second level. Turning a corner we literally entered a football field sized room with the above listed creatures in it.

As I was the tracker and scout for the group I told them to high tail it out and said there were more foes than we could overcome (they had not seen the room contents yet).

Oddly the Paladin took off running, but the wizard waited for me. Sadly I was the slowest of the group at a 20 movement and new that there was no chance of me getting to the doors before the enemy was upon us. So I asked the wizard for her Enlarge Person spell and told her to run, figuring to hold the hallway long enough for the rest to get out.

Lasted a whole three rounds due to proper hall clogging, 5 foot stepping, my better reach and them not being able to get around me to flank me which severely limited incoming attacks.

Then I fell after solo killing two orcs. Sadly the Paladin, realizing that the group was not fast on her heals, came back. By that time I was about to fall so she joined battle.

Long story short, the Paladin went unconscious fighting and the mage did some inspired casting and battlefield control. The two of them managed to kill the wargs and the last orc and then the mage surrendered to the Winter Wolf.

The Paladin stabilized on her first roll. I bled out before the fight ended and they had any chance to get to me to stabilize me.


My last character death happened when I started a fight by having my witch control a Draugr, then rolled last in initiative, and then had the wildshape focused druid, who was in front of me and blocking the other undead in the room, run behind the rest of the group leaving me and two angry mummies and some Draugr.

Pro tip: A low-mid level witch cannot solo two mummies.


I was in Reign of Winter, and the dice gods turned on me during a boss fight. The GM spared me, but I actually did die so it still counts.

Cause of Death: Weapon damage until hit points were depleted.

A dragon in it's death throes fell on top of my eldritch knight.

Scarab Sages

Dire Crocodile dissolved the Bag of Holding my sorcerer was hiding in with his stomach acid.

Technically not dead, but the DM said that I had no way of getting back to the material plane, so make a new PC.

I was quite sad, that lovable stupid catfolk really grew on me. Half the fun was watching my DM's face cringe when I say to NPCs "Herro, which way to <town>? Nyan?" Priceless


While we were crossing a bridge some big, nasty dino surfaced and attacked the summoner. My magus cast a spell (brow gasher) and closed to melee taking one AoO.
I do not remember what the rest of the party did except for the oracle who healed the summoner. No one did damage to the beast.
My turn again. I full attacked with spell combat/spell strike, rolled lucky dealing >80 hp with attacks, shocking grasp and bleed from brow gasher and reduced the baddy to below 5hp. It's turn. It full attacked me, having some crits same as I, and outright killed me.


My last character to"die" ascended immediately afterwards, and became the god of fear retreats and drinking in abnormal amounts

The one before that still isn't technically dead
He was a rat folk alchemist that eventually got his hand on a necronomicon( I think we can see where this is going )
The book was a gift from the king in yellow who had temporarily inhabited his body to be free
Even after the party begged and pleaded, the little power hungry bastard took I. The chaotic evil old one, and helped him escape his prison

At the end both me and the cleric got an artifact
I got the book,
He got some staff or something

Later in the series, the party managed to figure out we were basically in a giant Demi-plan sorta thing used to trap an evil god (not my friend the yellow guy)

The evil god had his power locked away in these nexus es that we had to go destroy
Whenever we got near one, he would offer us our wildest dreams to open it and give him back a portion of his power

the rat, being a greedy little monster already, opened one and asked to be transported to the real world
The evil god immediately obliged, and the rat was there, with his beautiful half elf maid in tow

Immediately after, the evil god burst from my chest
Effectively he used me as a like.. Plague carrying suicide bomber to free himself from the Demi plane thing
AND
The lawful evil "lady of pain" was so upset with me that she brought me back, just so she could torture me eternally, well.. Until the BBEG showed up and kiled me again
Just because he's a huge jerk and likes eating the souls of other gods
Did I mention that the rat would've become a god if I hadn't opened the damn box?
That's what happened the the character described above
Woulda been much better if the rat had become... Oh I dunno
The harbinger of madness or something? Best friend of the great old ones? A great NEW one?


Been having a fun mix of apathy and bad luck in Skull and Shackles over the last eight months or so:

Minor AP Spoilers

Spoiler:

1.A Mutant Saughin champion tried to turn my Rafolk Necromancer into a statue. The Saughin Artiste was foiled by unrelated trident based trauma...This worked for me though because the DM said he was originally concept of my LE Necro but it turns out he was not.

2. Monk/Brawler got crit twice by a Fighter/Assassin went straight from full to dead. Not how I was hoping the character to end. I was not expecting a campaign magic item that allowed you to use the damage bonuses of a range weapon on a bayonet attached to it.

3. Magus failed saves on Phantasmal Killer by one on both roles (both of which were under 8). Was finding incorporeal undead and he was the only one who could hurt them. That was a terrible night of dice rolling fo me. From the start, I rolled nothing over a ten and actually ,jokinglym predicted my death from about 45 minutes in.

Silver Crusade

My most recent character death was becoming a Cerberus chew toy while I was invisible....scent...ugh.


I haven't had a PC die in a really long time, in D&D or similar at least. The last two PCs who died were in Warhammer 40K and Call of Cthulhu.

The last dead PC that I clearly remember was back in 2e. The DM was running Dragon Mountain, a 10th-level adventure, and I'd never played a high-level mage before. Alas, I didn't know what I was doing, and didn't cast defensive spells ahead of time, except maybe (Mage) Armor. I got shot by a lot of bandits.


Balistero - 4 enervations followed by a critical hit from Vampiric Touch!

Sovereign Court

Level 1 dwarven barbarian. GM had a charging orc with a greataxe who rolled twin 20's on crit and confirmation and then 11, 11, 10 on the damage.

My last character tried to blow up the Starstone.

He failed to destroy it but passed the test, and right now he exists as the quasi-undead god of explosions.

Scarab Sages

Level 1 Mage with low STR, ran into a lone shadow. (The rest of the party was level 3) The shadow got a crit on me. The rest of the party then defeated the two shadows.


Does it count if the character was resurrected afterwards? Saying it anyways.

We were in combat with 2 Dark Stalkers, level was low but can't remember exactly. One had advanced, so I ran past it to engage the other one. I was planning to take it out alone or at least hold it while the other Stalker got beaten by the 3 other members of the party. If it used Darkness, I would just retreat outside of it. However seems GM gave it the ability to use Darkness as a quickened spell-like ability via a magic item. So in one turn it can use the darkness and then do two backstab attacks on me, taking me down from 2/3 of my HP to dead in one turn. And no, we couldn't use the item for quickening spell-like abilities ourselves or sell it, it was arbitrarily darkfolk only and worth 50GP at best. He also had another magic item, forgot which, but that was also "Darkfolk only, worth nothing to you"

To this day I resent him for it and plan on getting even once I'm running my own camapign. Maybe not death, that's too uncreative.

I haven't had a character I was playing die in years.

The last time was a 3.5 game. My fighter/ranger/Demon Hunter deliberately Bull Rushed the BBEG of the campaign off ledge into a one-way portal to the Abyss. We could see scores of demons crowded around the far side.

I told the GM I also wanted to pin his arms so that he couldn't grab hold of the ledge. The GM warned me that I could do it, but I'd fall in too, no save.

I told him that was the plan.


My Magus got killed when an animated hut spat out chair and hit her in the face.

16th level and they can fix that and bring you back?

Last one was my experimental Dwarf sorc. Surrounded by wolves, could not cast defensively, got tripped, got bit again standing, died.

About the same time was my 7th level Inquisitor with a reach weapon and combat replaces, who when we knew we were overmatched and a TPK was coming, found a choke point and held off the bad guys while the party caved the entrance in and ended up burning the building down too. Very heroic.

This is another reason why having parties with radically different levels is a bad idea.


Kartooth, Kobold Bard 1 and herald to Asoth of the Dragon (a second Kobold PC).

He was captured by slavers he couldn't understand or communicate with (common was the tongue of the nonbelievers), forced to spend his days in the mines (when Asoth was clearly bound for better! He was the smartest Kobold in our village!). The one grace he was afforded was that Asoth was kept nearby him at all times (he spoke common; Kartooth did not).

One day, a group of new slaves got their crew in trouble; they all ended up in an arena, fighting for a Goblin (or, to Kartooth, a wretched tail-less Kobold). The Goblin, skeptical of the slaves' talents, walked onto the battlefield and called the slaver/arenamaster out. Demanded Kartooth attack him to prove his worth.

Kartooth growled in Draconic, howled at the sky, praising Asoth's name in a proud manner befitting the harbinger of the Kobold messiah--

and he dropped his shortsword, nearly cutting his own tail off. The Goblin then killed poor, poor Kartooth in one fell blow.

Also Asoth had never met Kartooth before arriving at the slave camp. Kartooth may have been a little delusional.


My last character failed a save and was lighting bolted big time
But my first character was a long time ago my brother and i our first game both first lvl
We snuck into an orc layer killing a couple of guards and sneaked up to the main chamber we looked inside
And then my brother uttered the immortal line " look there's only six of them how tough can it be"
It took them just one round to rip us both a new one


Pathfinder Rulebook Subscriber

I haven't had a character die in a very long time. Closest was my half-orc paladin nearly met his end twice, taking on the stronger foe alone and holding his attention as best he could while his fellows took out his minions. Knight's Call (I think the spell is) helped with that. And if not for being a half-orc with the orc ferocity trait, he wouldn't have survived.

I have had characters retire, though. But those aren't really as interesting as the deaths.

Scarab Sages

The character death I'm most proud of was when I was playing a Paladin in Temple of Elemental Evil way back in a 1st/2nd edition hybrid game. We got lost in the elemental nodes, and somehow made our way to a chamber where we came face to face with Zuggtmoy far earlier than we were ready for.

I shouted "RUN, I'll Hold Her" and charged the demon lord of fungi. I was killed in 2 rounds, but I had bought enough time for the rest of the party to escape.


This was in the Second Darkness AP. I think we were in the second or third part. We were fighting a Bebilith. The Bugger got the best of my monk (rolled a 20). I died but I got better.


The last character I had that actually die was a fighter in ad&d. I was still new to the different rules as I had played 3.x, and I was having fun with the lack of dice rolling for doing certain things. The party I was in had grown accustomed to breaking the stick of summon the big gmpc when things got tough and the gm was going to fix that. Did a really good job too. We wound up in a cave in the middle of a castle, broke the stick of summoning and it didn't work. We realized we were in a demiplane now and had to deal with it. What we were up against was a dm cooked up half earth elemental thing, 2 larger fire elementals, and then some earth elemental mooks. I forgot that when the fire elementals surround themselves with more fire it's fire shield. Walked up with my longsword and crit, we used exploding criticals and I crit again. So the monster took 60 something damage, I took 120ish and I just exploded. Luckily that pc got revived after a week, but I got stuck playing some low level cleric for a few adventures while he healed up.

My witch was in a party of 4 (the other 3 were martials; a monk, a paladin and a fighter) fighting off a glabrezu. My hexes kept failing the save DCs while the other three were getting destroyed due to a nasty mirror image on the glabrezu that they couldn't overcome.

Finally one of the misfortune hexes landed, and the glabrezu suddenly ignored all three of them, taking AoO's, and came towards me, taking me from about 80hp to about 10hp. It was large, and I couldn't just 5ft step away to do anything about it in the next round when my party came to help, and I took another round of attacks, killing me. That would cost me a raise dead (16 prestige points).

Then the glabrezu telepathically offered the monk a wish if he wanted, to raise his fellow party member (me). He accepted it, "of course I want her raised!". So I was raised - as an undead minion.

They were forced to kill me again, and this time I'd need a resurrection spell (32 prestige) thanks to this little passage:

Raise Dead:
A creature who has been turned into an undead creature or killed by a death effect can't be raised by this spell. Constructs, elementals, outsiders, and undead creatures can't be raised. The spell cannot bring back a creature that has died of old age.

Way back when, AD&D 1st edtion, my 9th level fighter failed a saving throw against a polymorph other spell and also failed his system shock roll. Now hes a dead blue baboon.

The Exchange

My thirty sixth level wizard died of old age enchanting magic siege engines for a dwarf clan with a serious dragon problem. Never got around to questing for immortality.


My plate-wearing rogue (1 level fighter mix-in) that specialized in fighting dirty was knifed in his sleep by a crimson assassin who was told to infiltrate the party. As the rogue constantly wore plate it was an easy disguise to maintain.

The crimson assassin was actually my new character. So my old character was murdered by my desire to try something different (playing LE in a campaign).

The client wound up breaking the assassin's contract and shaming him in the eyes of the Mantis cult, so he teamed up (with appropriate caution on both sides) with the party to track him down.

Was a fun character and cool story arc.

Me and the group were hunting Raptors, and trying to get their eggs. All i can say on how i died is.... "Clever girl"


Geoffrey Winbourne - human paladin modeled partially on BTBATB Aquaman and partially Sir Geffen from the Paladin's Handbook. Died heorically covering the retreat of the surviving party members. He had a terrible session. With a (supposedly) 50% chance of hitting his foe, he managed to hit twice over the course of 3 hours of game play and about 20 rolls.
That would have been survivable had not the wizard gone down immediately and the druid couldn't make any Concentration checks, the duskblade missed on almost all her attack rolls, leaving only the cleric who somehow managed to keep us from dying for several turns.

Sovereign Court

My guy challenged a city guard captain to a duel because he made racist remarks towards his race.

Round one, the guard vital strikes a level 3 fighter for somewhere around 50 damage, killing him instantly.

Heh, raptors. My first level witch died on Saturday pinned between three deinonychuses on one side and a megaraptor on the other.

It was the sort of encounter that makes an adventurer question her life choices.

She got better though.

Silver Crusade

Free RPG Day yesterday was not kind to my rogue 2/wizard 1, Dumon Gray.

I was playing Risen from the Sands at our local gaming store, and my arcane-trickster-to-be is a Taldor-born antiquities dealer living in Sothis. The chance to add more relics to his shop was too much temptation to resist.

So It Ends . . .:
A mimic in the first chamber nearly killed him with a single bite, but he was able to retreat while his comrades slew the beast. He was later overrun by a swarm of beetles, which left him feeling a bit queasy but otherwise unharmed.

In the final battle, the party's frontline combatants struggled mightily to overcome their fear of the pyramid's mummy lord, forcing Dumon to step into melee combat duty. The last blow of the undead pharaoh bashed its way through Dumon's shield of force -- and inflicted mummy rot upon him.

Alas, he succumbed to the mummy's curse on the four-day return trip to the nearest city of Eto, and his remains now mingle with the sands of his adopted home.

May Anubis feed Sekh-pa-Mefer to Ammit.

I had grown quite attached to Dumon in the process of filling out a Character Folio for him, as I had worked pretty hard at building up his backstory. From a mechanical standpoint, I think I would have rather had him killed by a critical hit than repeatedly failing Fortitude saves and counting down the Constitution damage. Adding insult to injury, this makes two attempted arcane tricksters I have had killed in the year.

I feel you pain, I played through that on Saturday as well, That was a brutal module for level 3s. We all played the pregens though to get a sneak peek at the ACG classes.

It was somewhat humorous trying to figure out what loot we found was in that the Warpriest pregen was able to Detect Magic, but did not have Spellcraft. The Investigator pregen had spellcraft but did not have detect magic.

Funnily enough, the Investigator class would have fit Dumon better than his existing arrangement. My new character will be going through his Confirmation this weekend.


Last character to be forcefully retired (didn't die, but became impossible to play) was a dwarven fighter, dual wielding axes. He was paralysed / frozen, and has been for the last 10 years now. Due to his ring of sustenance though, he's still alive :p


Con damage by a wight. At the second game. Pretty annoying, since I was the person in the group with the highest CON.

Hmm. It's been a while.

I think the last of mine that died in-game was instakilled without rolls because the GM didn't like the character. Yeah...

I've had a character die since then, but not during the game. We took a break from the game. During the break, the GM had gotten tired of the game and decided to reboot the world by saying the party caused a worldwide conflagration that destroyed all magic and life, except children, so the next game could be about the children struggling to survive after the apocalypse.


It was only a few months ago for me:
My LVL 6 GUN (Mysterious Stranger) rests with his fallen comrades after a TPK in The Dragon's Demand. His memory lives on in the form of my avatar name, Ignotus Advenium.
