The World is Ready. Are You?
Deep in an ancient forest, a trembling young woman enters the clearing where a ramshackle hut crouches on birds’ legs.
Far below the earth, a caravan of kobold merchants passes through a stone archway carved with the faces of leering ghouls.
High atop a northern mountain, a dwarf grips his battle-axe and gazes over the rim of the world toward whatever fate the gods have in store for him.
This is Midgard, and its gates are now open.
The Midgard Campaign Setting brings to life a dark world of deep magic, with seven regions flavored by the folklore of Central and Eastern Europe plus a heady dose of weird fantasy. Lead designers Wolfgang Baur, Jeff Grubb, and Brandon Hodge led the Open Design community in a two-year project to build a sprawling setting supported by adventures and sourcebooks compatible with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, Dungeons & Dragons, AGE System, and more.
Midgard is ley line magic and warped alchemical experiments; the Western Waste’s giant, shambling horrors and magic-blasted landscapes; diabolical gnomes and the schemes of immortal Baba Yaga; wild, wind-riding elves and swashbuckling minotaur corsairs; the Mharoti Empire’s lethal assassins and exotic splendors; and the dragon-haunted crags of the icy Northlands.
The Midgard Campaign Setting 296-page book includes:
Pathfinder Roleplaying Game and AGE System rules for gearforged, kobold, and minotaur PCs
26 new backgrounds, 3 new schools of magic, and new specialties for AGE System
New clerical domains including clockwork, moon, hunger, and beer
More than 50 kingdom write-ups, with new feats and traits for each region of Midgard
New spells, magical items, and incantations
New gear and weapons unique to the setting
Ley line magic and the secrets of the shadow roads!
From the Northern fjords to the hidden tombs of the gnolls, from the raven-headed reavers to the ruins of the great mage-kingdoms: all of Midgard is yours!
"A wonderfully rich and beautiful sourcebook chronicling the world of Midgard. Think of how many game masters have fancied their campaign worlds awesome enough to publish in the book. So few actually have the writing and publishing chops to accomplish this, and to do so with such style is pretty much unheard of." —WIRED GeekDad Holiday Gift Guide 2012
"What I look for in a setting book, particularly a fantasy setting book, is something that inspires me to run a game there—a book that draws me into the world, presents setting material in a way that’s both useful and entertaining, and looks like it will shows its best qualities at the table. The Midgard Campaign Setting is all of those things, in spades, with extra magic gravy on top. This is a superb book that I can recommend without qualification to any GM who likes well-realized, gazetteer-style fantasy settings." —Martin Ralya, Gnome Stew
"If you’re looking for a campaign setting that is familiar with a twist, and a book that is the spiritual successor to the 3e Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting book, the Midgard Campaign Setting is for you. ...There is stuff here you can steal for your own setting, and it’s 'generic' but different. This goes double if you loved the 3e Forgotten Realms campaign or Mystara." —Critical Hits

Do we know when preorder PDFs purchased through Paizo will be sent?
I can't say for sure, but given that their offices are closed today, I am guessing the Paizo preorder PDFs will ship tomorrow. Not sure we can summon a webstore gninja on her day off!

Curse you, bank holiday! I suppose I can't begrudge them a day off.
Oh, and Mead, the Further North PDF is now available at DTRPG, per your request.
Yay! Awesome! TY! So, now so I just don't spend for just that. I think I am going to have to also get... hmm.. The Ghoul country maybe?
Edit: Got those, and the two planar book stuff. I really got to learn to control my addiction.
No, don't stop there! Have you gotten Zobeck for Pathfinder? The Ennie-winning Streets of Zobeck? Do you know about the Journeys to the West book due out soon that will expand upon the western part of Midgard? Did you know that Kobold Quarterly includes Midgard material?

Does this include those of us who backed Midgard Tales?
I was referring to the Campaign Setting backers above, but yes, all Diabolist-tier backers and above for the Tales project also got a copy of the PDF code yesterday. Some went missing in spam filters etc: if that is you, please let me know!

Buy more! Buy more! Lol! :)
So far, I have Zobeck gazetteer, Imperial Gazeteer, the planar books, the northlands books, and the setting. Next paycheck I will get more. :)
This should absolutely be considered for purchase. There are many settings that cry out for attention, but this one has a rich old world European with a generous helping of the strange and exotic. Its a quality, high production product from a 3PP who has, is, and will continue to support it.
It would make an excellent holiday gift for a GM or yourself!
I've been really looking forward to this. One thing I'm really pleased about is the incantations we've worked into the setting-- it does a lot to make magic both more accessible and yet folksy. And the art is downright gorgeous. :D
Iam not sure whether this question belongs here or in the Compatible Products thread. Please place it where it belongs.
As I read through the book I notice the mention of Ley Line magic when it talks about figuring the DC of a spell enhanced with a Ley Line. here is my example:
To use a ley line you must make a caster level check as a free action
just prior to casting your spell. The DC of the check is 10 plus twice
the level of the spell being cast. So a 4th level spell would require a
DC 14 caster level check.
My question is shouldn't the DC for a caster level check for a 4th level spell be 18?
I could be wrong and possibly am. I would appreciate a clarification.

You are correct, and that is an error. Will fix in the errata.
Just downloaded my copy, and felt compelled to post that this is the most beautifully presented Kobold Press product I've seen. The borders, heading fonts, colour schemes and illustrations (not to mention the maps!) bring the subject matter to vivid life.
Out of curiousity. Is there going to ever be an expansion detailing Far Cathay, Sikkim, Beldestan and Khandiria? Or the Southlands?

1 person marked this as a favorite.
Good question. There has been some talk about doing the Southlands, including Nurian godsworn magic, lotus magic, the desert tribes, the sandships of Siwal, the Spider Prophet, and the like. Very pulpy and playable.
Sikkim, Beldestan, and Khandiria.... No plans right now. If someone has a great brainstorm for them, that can always change.

I have to admit, pulpy would be cool. There could be a Gearforged Indiana Jones. Without aliens....
Yeah; I've backed off any kickstarters lately, because if (when!) a Southlands kickstarter comes along, I'm on it at as high a level as the wife will tolerate.
We've been huge fans of the Old Margrave eldritch forest, and have unofficially incorporated it into the wilds of Varisia for our Pathfinder adventures. It's thrilling to finally see the new campaign setting come to market. My only regret is that I can't justify taking a week off work to pour over the book ...
Well done, everyone who helped bring this project to life.
Downloaded this Campaign Setting and have to say it is a beautiful piece of work. Between this and Cerulean Seas, they are probably the two best campaign setting books I think I've seen.
Compliments aside, I am looking at the Ley Line section and there are a couple of abbreviations I don't understand in the Ley Line Effects. CAF and ISM. All the rest of them I get.
I've been looking for a good implementation of ley lines, and between this and Monte Cook's Earthblood option they actually cover all the things that I want ley lines to do.

Thanks.
We've got something else in the pipeline ref ley lines for Kobold Press, so be on the lookout in the next few months.
Will Ley Lines connect at Nodes? I enjoy reading Mercedes Lackey's books of Valdemar that have magical Nodes that can supply spell casters with additional power.
I installed 10 when it came out and then I was having some compatibility issues with a couple of other things I use, so I went back to 9.4.0 and not having any issues reading it.
I have to agree with what the others are saying here; this is a beautiful and inspiring book. In so many ways, this was the campaign setting that I had been looking for since I first made the change into Third Edition. It takes advantage of many features of 3E+, especially and including the new stuff in PF, without deviating from the expected norms for the game. It innovates where it should and leaves the core assumptions in place. This makes it a useful setting for new players and a handy tool for GMs, even if they only want to mine it for their own setting.
There are a LOT of good ideas here. The flavor details are sophisticated and intelligent, without being overwhelming. I have been excited about this product from the very beginning (Patron), but I am a more than satisfied customer. This is one of the finest products I own, and I am excited to play with all my new toys.
