Extra Life, New Regions, and Volunteer Recognition!

Wednesday, November 1, 2017

In the couple of weeks since I got back from PaizoCon Oz, I keep looking at our blog schedule for an opportunity to write of my travels and share some of the photos I took at the event. That there hasn't been a gap testifies to how much is going on in the realm of organized play. So, I'm going to share a couple of photos today and I promise to give a full account of my travels next week.

Extra Life

Paizo is a major partner with Extra Life this year. Extra Life is a charity that raises funds for local Children's Hospitals. We have a Super Team and welcome anyone that wishes to help raise money for the kids. You can find our team page here. Feel free to make an account and join our efforts!

As part of our fundraising efforts, we will be live-streaming games the 25 hours of the Extra Life event. Starting at 10:00 AM Saturday and running through 10:00 AM Sunday, you can watch Paizo staffers and a few guests roll their dice, move their mice, and hope no one gets hurt. Organized play events start at 2:00 AM Pacific standard time with a PFS scenario brought to us by the local Seattle Venture-Officers and GMs. From 6:00-10:00 AM Pacific standard time, John Compton takes the helm to run a Starfinder Scenario. Tune in to watch our scenarios and help with the hijinks. Visit our Twitch stream to watch the event and qualify for the chance to earn special prizes, such as limited edition boons, Paizo books, a Gen Con badge, and more.

Participating in the live stream event gives the Paizo organized play team an opportunity to reveal another way in which we're distributing race boons: via online events. From this weekend, when an organized play team member appears on a podcast, streamed charity event, or other online public appearance, they'll bring a few boons with them. Which boons, you ask? How about Ghorans (for Pathfinder Society) and Skittermanders (for Starfinder Society)! To whet your interest in these boons, please note that Ultimate Wilderness (releasing in November) features new options for Ghorans. I encourage you to join John, Thurston, myself, and a few other staffers from 6:00-10:00 AM Pacific standard time this Sunday when we're giving away the first of these via raffle. We are working on the method of disbursement, which will most likely involve a $20 donation to Extra Life and some variety of raffle, but regardless of dispersal method, you must be logged in and watching to win.

In addition to the Paizo live-stream, there are quite a few other conventions running events for Extra Life as well. So the organized play team decided to encourage the spirit of generosity by shaking things up a bit. The following modifications to Society rules apply for any games played at a venue supporting Extra between November 2 and November 6, 2017.

  • The Retail Incentive Program applies for all locations, regardless of whether the event takes place in a location selling items. Monies donated to Extra Life qualify as purchases for the program, regardless of whether donated by players, GMs, or spectators.
  • We've sent a special Extra Life boon to locations running events. This boon is eligible for dispersal to players the same way other boons are available or to anyone who makes a $10 or more donation to Extra Life.
  • Spectators may donate money to Extra Life and change up the action of the game, as long as it does not modify the adventure mechanics or the GMs ability to run the adventure as written. So make the players talk in funny voices, dance a jig at the table, or swap character sheets with a neighbor.

Don't forget to check out our Twitch stream and root for Paizo and its partners in our quest of helping sick children.

Online Organized Play

Over the past two years, the numbers of GMs running games in the aether doubled, then doubled again and is continuing to grow at lightening pace. Players with mobility issues, or in remote locations, or on non-traditional schedules, are joining the online games as a way to connect with other players and experience organized play. Paizo's partnerships with online VTT platforms and hosting of Play-by-Post games on its forums support player opportunities for online gaming. For these reasons, and to keep up with the growing demands on the organizers' time and energy, we are expanding the team. It is our great pleasure to announce the creation of an eleventh region—the Online region, under the guidance of Jesse Davis, also known as Ironhelixx.

One of the biggest changes in the online region is the addition of Pathfinder Society Adventure Card Guild play. Stemming from our playtests of the various base sets, we are looking to introduce more players to the Society based stories of the Season of Faction's Favor and Season of Plundered Tombs, the swashbuckling adventures of the Season of the Shackles, the holy fury contained in the Season of the Righteous, the virtues and sins of the Season of the Runelords and the fire and chaos of Season of the Goblins. If you want to experience the fun of the card game, but haven't had a group near you, this may well be your answer.

Both the Retail Support Program and the Regional Support Program will have online components. We are currently fleshing out the details and will post them in the next few weeks. It is a balancing act, as we don't want to deny the online players the benefits of the programs, but we don't want to negate the benefits for physical locations either. At this time we are soliciting feedback for how to integrate these programs. If you have ideas, feel free to send them to me at organizedplay@paizo.com

To assist Jesse, we are promoting three people to the position of Venture-Captain. Each will oversee one aspect of online play. Please welcome the following individuals to the VC ranks:

Venture-Captain—PbP: Hilary Moon-Murphy
Venture-Captain—ACG: Tyler Beck
Venture-Captain—VTT: James Bartlett

Rounding out the team are the Venture-Lieutenants and Venture-Agents: Gerard van Konijnenburg, Phillip Wood, Christine Bussman, Sylvain Corbaz, Michael Hallet. Andrew Warner, Richard Lowe, Helen Yau, and Hannes Schunk. Contact information for the above listed individuals, as well as all volunteers, is available on the Coordinators Page.

We are always looking for more volunteers, both online and around the globe. If you are interested in helping organize games and joining the ranks of the Venture-Officers, please email me with your location and area of interest at tonya.woldridge@organizedplayfoundation.org to open a discussion.

Thank you to the team of volunteers helping spin up the new region and to all the Venture-Officers worldwide, without whom we would not have an organized play program.

DIY Terrain Contest

Last August, we asked GMs to submit their best DIY Terrain photos. The four submissions below impressed us and we couldn't choose between them, so we are posting them all and asking you to choose a winner. Please give them a good look over and vote for your favorite!

We will leave the polls open for 2 weeks and announce the winner on November 22nd.

5* GM Recognition

With the turn of the seasons, the convention pace slows down a bit, but continues to provide many opportunities for GMs to run games. Several of those GMs completed their 5-star requirements. These include running 150 games, of which at least 50 must be unique scenarios and 10 be special scenarios. These requirements don't include the hours spent preparing their scenarios or gathering their supplies. The time needed to reach 5* is well over 600 hours! To those listed below, who earned their 5th star over the past few weeks, welcome to the club and thank you for your dedication to our Society.

  • Matt Hill
  • James Hines
  • Alan Kaekel
  • Jussi Leinonen

Can you clarify this a little bit? The stream starts at 10 AM Saturday but the first OP event isn't until 2 AM Sunday morning? The first boons are being given out the last 4 hours of the event? I guess I'm not really sure when I should be tuning in for these raffles and limited edition boons.

Hi everyone! Tyler Beck here, your new Adventure Card Game Online VC!

Thanks so much for the well-wishes. I'm super excited about all the new stuff we're going to be working on.

I've already gotten several inquiries into how people can start playing PACG Org Play online for credit, and I just wanted to let you all know that we're working on that. This will be a several-month process at the least, and I appreciate your patience between now and when we roll stuff out. I'll be giving updates as we move forward with that process. In the meantime, I'll probably start a thread over in the PACG org play forum area asking for feedback on what you all would like to see come out of this.

Also, I'm going to start running a few games on the boards myself, which will be PFSACG games for org play credit! I'll put up recruitment threads with detailed instructions on what you'll need to do as players in the Play-by-post recruitment area, and will cross-post them in the ACG area as well. That recruitment will probably start next week or so.

Stay tuned for more information!!

Our local store is new to PFS, we've only been running since June... Is there a way to keep up to date on events like this? We do run charity events for other games several times a year, and I'd like to know how we can get involved with Pathfinder events like this. Are the race boons only available by raffle chance? No chance of donating more to the charity to guarantee get it? I like Extra Life a lot and have no problem doing it. I'd just like to know if I can skip the random factor of the raffle.

If there is then I will beyond pissed. I hate the whole concept of raffles, pay to win. I hate how booms are distributed this way. A lot of people can’t afford to do that. Myself being one.

But the point of the boon is to say "Thank you" to those who donate to the charity. Are you saying everyone should get the boon whether or not they donate? Not that I am saying I agree with them being distributed using a raffle or not, but wondering how to reconcile that someone who cannot afford to buy a raffle ticket and therefore cannot afford to donate to the charity should get the incentive for doing so.

I think the frustration this player is trying to express is that Paizo has chosen to take a race, Skittermanders, that immediately drew players interest and created a gated method of obtaining it that seems extremely limiting. I don't think anyone wants to do away with charity boons and similarly structured rewards for players who support Paizo's chosen benefactors. The perception among many of my local players is that Paizo purposefully chose a race they knew would be popular and created a system where you have to log in at a specific time and donate a specified amount to even have a chance of getting the racial boon. I know the raffle is a way to avoid the pay-to-play perception but that's exactly what it feels like to many.

I want to address the concerns about this being some kind of "master plan" to get a whole bunch of extra money from us (even if it is for an awesome charity). It really isn't.

When we started work on sanctioning Alien Archive we recognized how popular skittermanders were. Since the book started coming to light, we also recognized a very divided player/GM reaction skittermanders. While much of it is positive, I've recorded and received numerous concerns about "All Skittermander Tables" and preconceptions about skittermander culture and how they should/will be played at a table. So, it was obvious from Day 0 that we needed to have a controlled and reliable way of getting these adorable pastel furballs into the wild.

First off , yes, currently we're looking at a donation being a CHANCE to win a skittermander boon. Opening it up to "donate to get" easily has a reek of "pay to play" and not something we want to promote. As the blog states, the donation isn't even 100% locked in yet, but it's looking like a direction we'll go (to help promote an amazing cause).

Second, until otherwise announced, this promotional online media boon will be the primary vector for getting skittermanders out in the wild. The idea is to help our media friends get potential new viewers, while also giving Organized Play something cool to offer when we go on those shows—seriously, a lot of our "cool material" is scenario spoilers and stuff that's difficult to divulge in interviews, which makes it harder for Organized Play to even get invited onto certain shows. That being said, the Organized Play team (myself, John, Tonya, and Linda) look forward to taking part in various online streams/podcasts/interviews, where we can talk about the numerous Organized Play initiatives, and get more and more skittermanders into the wild!

Finally, as I stated above, skittermanders are tremendously popular. We're just "opening the flood gates a small bit" to start getting them into the community, but also trying to avoid a situation where EVERYONE gets a skittermander and then we end up with a situation of tables of skittermanders. This is especially true because there's very little lore on the skittermanders (a temporary problem, I realize). As I write this, I have no expectation that this boon will be our only vector of getting skittermanders out to the masses.

And as a final tidbit to all the Starfinder Society players out there... be sure to watch upcoming scenarios for possible new ways to get access to uncommon/rare races in the campaign!

2/5

So my biggest issue is some people have a lot of money and get the bigger chance to win. It has happen locally. Some people can't barely afford the initial amount so their chance is SEVERELY limited. I do agree everyone should get a participation boon. I would love to donate but I am in limited funds and already have another charity I am looking to try an support at the same time.

I really could careless about the Skittermander. While I would like one I have other interests. I always hated raffles. Then i feel like people only donate to get the boon and really don't care for the charity as much. They only are donating to get a boon. I really think this would have been a great opportunity to give the Skittermanders out to everyone who donated then had a more exotic/rare race.

While I do find in low they choose what was the most popular race and basically saying oh donate if you want it and oh it will be limited amount. I think they could have picked a better race. Again donating just to win a boon is really low. I don't ever see, I could be wrong and if so I apologize ahead of time, charities being advertised just to donate, there is always some sort of boon associated with it. If I came one day to the sight and saw hey we would like you to donate to this charity just to donate then it would be different.

Paizo Employee 5/5 Starfinder Society Developer

3 people marked this as a favorite.

I also want to emphasize, that the release of ghoran/skittermander promotional boons is NOT just tied to this event. Future online media events attended by Organized Play staff will not require any kind of donation incentive.

For example, if we were invited onto a play podcast like Glass Cannon or an interview on Know Direction, our plan would be to give away a set number of boons during those events as well. These would not require any kind of donation to those organizations. So while I can understand the frustration for this event, please don't misconstrue it as being "skittermanders and ghorans can only ever be received via paying for a chance to win them", that is NOT the case.

Grand Lodge 4/5

I’m hoping the boons are still in the process of being sent out. We’re checking emails and the junk folder. *fingers crossed* Tomorrow’s got by to be a big day.

Hope lots of money ends up getting donated at everyone’s respective charities.

A thought, Thurston... Will you be participating in online events in different timezones? It’s a worldwide campaign, and being logged online in different timezones is tough. With my odd work schedule, I am frequently listening to interviews with you guys days after the fact, in bits and pieces when I have time. And I’m in the US. I’m just hoping that there will be ways for those in Asia to also participate and get these great boons.

I for one look forward to GMing for my first skittermander. It’ll be fun seeing what the little guys do.

I just hope there will be things I can participate in the future. It's a little frustrating working in retail at the times these things usually happen, and with not enough advance notice there's no way to get time off of work.

It is these parts that I do not understand. Should they select a race no one wants? What other race choice would be "better?" Isn't the point of an incentive to be something people want and to encourage those to donate more? Sure, in a perfect world everyone is altruistic and gives the maximum they can simply out of the goodness of their heart. Some do, but the reality is there are soo many charities that they have to compete against one another for desperately needed funds and for many, their donation is often directly tied to "what do I get out of it." How much more will this effort raise if their is a rare race boon attached? How much less would it be if we simply asked people to donate for nothing? How much less would it be if the incentive was marginal?

Quite aware of time zones, which is why we're starting our first Extra Life event at something a bit more accessible to people in other time zones.

Otherwise, I assume that online media events like podcasts, which often times aren't listened to "live", will have some different raffle methods. Likely a "listen in and hear the keyword" similar to what some radio shows do!

Hmm

Although most (all?) of our online appearances so far have involved podcasts, companies, and the like in North America time zones, we're looking at ways to become more involved with online appearances beyond that region. If you know of any that would be a good fit, we'd be interested to hear from and about them.

Not all online appearances are live, either, and we have a few thoughts on how we could provide boon opportunities to listeners who check out those events after they're edited and made available.

A touch unfortunate.

Just to clarify, to possibly get a skittermander or ghoran boon, a person should donate something and watch the Twitch Stream from 6:00-10:00 AM Pacific standard time this Sunday?

Probably a good way to raise awareness of the event. Hope i can make it^^

That is it! Watch our Live Feed and keep an eye on the chat. When you see the boon announced, follow this link and hit the donate button. Make your donation per the chat directions and you will be entered to win the boon.

See you all in a few hours!

I really enjoyed the event guys, you all did a great job at being fun for 25 hours straight and the opportunity to donate to a great charity and get a chance at some rare and fun items was icing on the cake. :)
