Pathfinder Society Regional Coordinators—Apply Now!

Pathfinder Society Regional Coordinators—Apply Now!

Friday, July 2, 2010

At long last the time has come to open the doors to the wide world of Pathfinder Society Regional Coordinators. This plan has been a long time coming and thanks to years of player and GM feedback, I think we now have a plan in place to turn over some of the responsibilities for organizing and growing Pathfinder Society to local and regional volunteers, many of whom have already been doing so since the beginning.

A few fine-print notes before we get started:

1. The Pathfinder Society Organized Play Regional Coordinator is a volunteer position. Regional coordinators are not Paizo Publishing employees. They are not official representatives of the company. Applying for the volunteer position of regional coordinator means you acknowledge these restrictions.

2. A Pathfinder Society Organized Play Regional Coordinator must be willing and able to fulfill a list of monthly volunteer duties as noted below.

3. A Pathfinder Society Organized Play Regional Coordinator must always strive to act in a professional, positive, and outgoing manner when functioning in their capacity as volunteers for Paizo Publishing.

4. You must be 18 years of age or older and you must be willing to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) with Paizo Publishing.

Assuming you're still on board, here's the regional coordinator volunteer position in greater detail:

What is a Pathfinder Society Organized Play Regional Coordinator?

A regional coordinator is a local and regional organizer and point of contact for Paizo Publishing's worldwide organized play campaign, Pathfinder Society.

Regional Coordinator Volunteer Duties and Expectations

1. Organize a minimum of two Pathfinder Society Organized Play convention or game store appearances per month in your local or regional area of responsibility.

2. Attend PaizoCon or Gen Con and work for Paizo at one (or both) of those conventions annually. Non-USA regional coordinators will be expected to attend large local conventions to be named later.

3. Maintain and update monthly a full report of local game stores including contact information, manager's name, what Paizo products they carry, and whether or not they're running Pathfinder Society Organized Play events (with or without your assistance).

4. Build a positive rapport with all local game store managers and employees.

5. Provide the campaign coordinator with frequent feedback from game stores, volunteers, and players in your local area or region of responsibility.

6. Be a Paizo Publishing product expert. Familiarize yourself with all of our product lines and be comfortable talking about all of them.

7. Game Master a minimum of one Pathfinder Society Organized Play session per month.

8. Participate daily on the Pathfinder Society Organized Play messageboards and on the private Regional Coordinator messageboard.

9. Build and maintain monthly an email list of local volunteers.

10. To the best of your ability, ensure that all Pathfinder Society Organized Play sessions run in your local area or region of responsibility are reported and reported accurately.

11. Be the go-to contact for your local area or region of responsibility; assist local game days, game clubs, conventions, or any other such group wanting a Pathfinder Society Organized Play presence at their event.

12. Ensure that all Pathfinder Society Organized Play events in your local area or region of responsibility are entered into the event-finder at paizo.com/pathfindersociety.

Rewards for Pathfinder Society Organized Play Regional Coordinators

1. Free attendance at PaizoCon or Gen Con (or both), including free badges, a portion of a hotel room, booth vouchers, and possible product rewards. In order to receive the free attendance, the regional coordinator must arrange his or her own travel to and from show, must provide for his or her own food, and must volunteer for a minimum of eight slots at Gen Con and a minimum of four slots at PaizoCon.

2. Pathfinder Society Organized Play Regional Coordinator dinner at PaizoCon or Gen Con (or both).

3. Free PDFs of every new PDF product Paizo Publishing releases added to your My Downloads section on paizo.com.

4. Annual exclusive special scenario available to regional coordinators and 5-star GMs only for one year.

5. Messageboard tag in the Pathfinder Society messageboards: Pathfinder Society Regional Coordinator. (Note: this tag will trump all other tags while posting on the Pathfinder Society messageboards.)

6. Special exclusive events at PaizoCon and Gen Con.

Local and Regional Targets

As we begin our regional coordinator program, we are only seeking candidates for the following local and regional areas. If you do not live in one of these areas, please do not apply. As we grow, we plan to expand our regional coordinator program into more locations worldwide—so if you don't see your area on here yet, don't despair! We may be coming soon to a region near you.

How to Apply

Send an email to pathfindersociety@paizo.com with the subject Pathfinder Society Regional Coordinator. In this email, please attach a copy of your normal employment resume in .doc, .txt, or .rtf format that includes your employment history, job skills, education, and anything else that displays a history of professional employment. Please ensure that your resume includes your physical mailing address, full legal name, phone number, and email address.

Additionally, please include a separate document in .doc, .txt, or .rtf format that contains the following information:

1. Detail your involvement in Pathfinder Society Organized Play over the last two years.

2. Detail conventions, events, game days, clubs, and so on that you have organized and run.

3. Detail your roleplaying game history.

4. List how many stars you currently have on your Pathfinder Society Organized Play GM rating.

5. List your Pathfinder Society ID # and the email address associated with your paizo.com account (if different from your email address in your resume).

6. Detail any conventions, events, game days, clubs and so on that you plan to attend this year.

7. Finally, detail two ideas that you haven't seen Paizo try that, in your opinion, will help grow Pathfinder Society Organized Play in your local area or region.

While you do not have to be a member of Pathfinder Society Organized Play to apply for this volunteer position, preference will be given to those who display a solid history of involvement with the Society. I will update this paizo.com blog post frequently (and the associated discussion thread) as I fill positions.

Please make sure you follow all of the instructions above. I look forward to hearing from you!

I have to bear the burden of/deal with/put up with/give medication to (1) Tim Hitchcock and (2) Mark Moreland. Ok, that parts done.

Not that many stores in the UK run regular games and we don't get even one convention a month.

You just need one store that runs two games a month, or two that run one game a month.

It might be possible to get that for the whole of the UK. I guess setting that up would be national coordination ;-)

Yep, and then you can stop organizing games for Conception, Oddcon, PaizoconUk, UKGamesExpo, GameCon and Dragonmeet! ;-)

Btw, any Pathfinder Society planned for IndieCon?

Somehow I don't think that's going to happen;-)

I always figured Pathfinder wasn't 'indie' enough for Indiecon so no plans for it.

There is some interest in getting some Pathfinder Society play going at Wargames Heaven in Brighton. Just thought I'd throw that out incase there are any other British Paizonians in that area.

Great Job Josh the responsibilities and rewards are well matched.

The rewards are actually very generous if I could just figure out how to get my wife to become a gamer this would be my dream assignment.

Such is life I will offer my assistance to whomever gets the position in NYC

I might be able to help - email me at paizoconuk@hotmail.com and we can discuss it. (Not that I'm trying to jump into the coordinator role but I could offer some assistance)

I guess 'organise' is not an issue if subcontraction is allowed. We should get at least 2 games a month together in the whole of the UK.

For example if I run a game at Canterbury University or a the Deal Wargame Club - these should count for the whole of the UK as long as you ensure they are at least listed somewhere on the PaizoCon UK pages.

But certainly what's missing right now is co-ordination to list ahead of time where you could game in the UK.

I just looked up local games stores and wanted to inquire on the weekend if I could give an introductory game at the Snipers Nest at Ramsgate. Not sure it will happen - but I'm trying. And having somewhere a place to go to to check if a game is on would help a lot. I remember how difficult it was for me to find a first game until you invited me to come around.

Though I would love to do This, And I think I would be good at it, because of my obsession with organization ;), and I believe I am close enough to Austin (45 Min drive) to do that region, the threat of deployment is just to great to chance it. Oddly been in the Air Force for almost 10 years and never deployed due to the positions I was in not deploying often, but looks like that has changed with my current duty location.

I will watch closely my current duty location, and see if that is not the case, If I feel I have very little chance of deploying I will submit an application for the Austin position if it has not been filled. Either way if the position is filled I will lend my assistance to the Austin regional coordinator. Looking forward to the future of the PFS and I will continue to give my help the origination in any way I can.

See you at GenCon Josh!

Wow, free pdfs of all Pathinder products? I hope regional coordinators use these to update PathfinderWiki. It's a great free resource for new PFS players and something I always recommend to newbies who want to find out more about the world. I might be a bit biased, though.

Arnwyn wrote:

The initial locations were determined by current activity.

I love my Canadian brethern and sistern. I shall watch Canada in the coming months to see if activity increases (such as reporting) and should that happen, I'll be happy as poutine on my breakfast table to announce regions for Canada. :-)

This looks good! I would sign up, but I just dont have the time.

Possible Coordinators to the NYC region would be either Mark(Yoda) or one of the GM's from the Wednesday night PFS meetup at Au Bon Grout.

I like the requirements, the person would definitely have to be dedicated to the game. As for the PDF's well I'll just keep supporting the company the old fashion way.

So lets go NYC PFS Members clean up the resume and apply!

@ JOSH: I want to put this out - Does this change any other GM's from the area from conducting their own PFS Events? Do they have to get approval from the new coordinator?

You should also talk to Mark (yoda8myhead), Icon is within range of him, Also isn't the next ICON number 30? That is home for me, so I may think about going to it to, went to them all the time in the 90's.

Shivok wrote:

No, but I would strongly encourage folks in these localities and regions to contact the coordinator (once known) just to give them a heads-up. I wouldn't want the regional coordinator to organize 20 tables of PFS at a local con and then arrive and find out a fan set up another 10 more completely separate. Good communication is always a good idea and I'm hoping by having a coordinator system we can ... coordinate ... the many Society events that occur every month.

We may be talking about two different ICON's. The one Thea speaks of is held in Iowa, and I thought that yoda was in NYC?

I'd love to do this but sitting here in the center of the state the nearest region is a good 2 hour drive. Hopefully someone steps up for the Bay Area.

Shadow Lodge

I expect those of us in less active regions that coordinate will do it in a less official capacity? I'm fine with that really, lol. Honestly, with one actual game store in the entire tri-city area for me (Olympia, Lacey, Tumwater), there isn't much choice in places to go to play, but our groups are growing. Last meet-up we had three tables going in our second session. It was pretty sweet.

And of course, there's the whole population density thing. Believe me, a "region" up here is a whole bunch more travelling.

As much as I'd like to see one made available for Toronto area, I would think that there is more activity in Ottawa/Montreal... and they have a few conventions.

Hmm... stuck between Boston and NYC. We poor folk of Connecticut get no love. :(

Now that the Rant is over I think it is a pretty sweet deal.

I'll bite Joshua. While I have no interest in being a regional anything, I do run a sizable meetup and have wanted to see PFS games run at our monthly events.

If you can put someone in touch with me who might be interested in running a table or two at our monthly meetups that would be great.

Perhaps this is something that would be best to wait until the new regional person has been selected. Might be a good starting point anyhow.

Pasadena, California (I hid a link up above in the words "Sizable meetup"). I told my friend about this, perhaps he's interested.

Will there be competition among regions to see which can have the largest percentage growth from year to year, or to see which can have the most total sessions reported, etc?

:-?
I have doubts as to whether that might encourage best practice or a global harmony in the community.
Plus once Kruelaid set up as China's Regional co-ordinator and got PFS going over there, he would beat all other regions hands down year after year after year...

Darn it, all those paizo pdfs with the posts. Ah well. Best of luck to those who are about to be appointed regional co-ordinators. Maybe some day Paizo will need an organiser whose role is to bother regional co-ordinators by email, and occasionally post on the boards or pop into the chatroom...

I agree this is the toughest requirement. I think why Josh is doing it is to see and talk to his Coordinators in person at least once a year. Nothing beats face time.

WOW! This is cool, but would be a daunting task especially in larger metro cities like New York, Boston, LA, and Chicago. I know there are dozens of gaming stores spread across the Chicagoland area plus at least as many dedicated book/comic dealers that dabble in games. To stay current with all of them, monthly, feels like a full-time job. I would love to take the mantle, but alas, work, family, etc leaves little time for other. It's hard enough keeping up with my weekly event at FLGS and a bi-weekly home game. Oh, for the days of youth before children, and other responsibilities. Guess I'll just have to wait until it's my turn to win PowerBall so I can quit my job and become a professional geek :-)

Anyone who plans on applying for this in the Seattle, WA "region" should let me know -- with the monthly Seattle Mob Game Day we have taken care of half of your "monthly games".
