Which of the two interests you the most?
I find the alchemist quite interesting but don't know how / why a wage slave could leave his job (and his massive clan debt) to travel with our little band. What ties you to us? Did something go wrong in Fort Shaw? Have you been accused of a murder / theft that you did not commit, and suddenly had to run into tribal areas? Perhaps someone died after imbibng one of your potions, but it's not your fault. If you can give a reason for why you would want to travel with us, I think that one has some great potential.
The drunken swashbuckler could probably be squeezed into any background. It's Inigo Montoya! "Do you want me to send you back to where you were? Unemployed, in Greenland?"

Camris |

Well, when the debt is discovered to be fraudulent and the company bosses never intended to let you go free, of course he'll leave! And if one of the other PC's helped him escape, well his complicated sense of honor demands he go along with them.
And of course, a swashbuckler is one of my favorite tropes, ever since I saw the mid 70's Three Musketeers (you know, the good one)...
And having no memory is a perfect hook for a GM to pull all kinds of nasty things on a party.

Zemwaar |

Hey, I'm not just in it for my friend. If I wasn't around, you would all probably die without me. [He thinks he's too clever for his own good, see?]
[just like makirut, eh albion?]
Hehe, I was thinking the exact same thing.
@Camris: I get a feeling that a drunken swashbuckler always fits right in a Razor Coast game, so I think it would be seamless though it might take some additional reasoning to have us travelling together, as he doesn't seem particularly tied up to anything? ;)
As for the alchemist, I think it would fit in too, just as long as he is not experimenting on Zemwaar :D I am not at all familiar with alchemists - what are their usual roles or, since I have read they are very versatile, what would be your general role?

Rata Fenn |

I like both character ideas, but I love the swashbuckler class, so I'd have to side with that one.
I'd be more supportive of the alchemist if he weren't tien. I play in another pbp with a tien man and have kinda had all I can take of their broken language and macho boasting haha.

Nefertiti Abdul |

Hey, I'm not just in it for my friend. If I wasn't around, you would all probably die without me. [He thinks he's too clever for his own good, see?]
[just like makirut, eh albion?]
Would I die without you? Yes, and likely in less than a day while venturig outside of Fort Shaw. I'm not built to deal damage personally, but to enhance everyone else's abilities. Without a team... I'm dead. I may be diplomatic, but that does not work on most monsters!
Alchemist vs. Swashbuckler:
Tien isn't a problem for me, and I like alchemists a lot. (I even play a goblin alchemist named Twitchy Boom Boom in my other pbp.) The chiurgian would provide more healing in the party and could do excellent damage with bombs, extracts and mutagens. Alchemists have great skills and can be extraordinarily powerful and versatile.
My issue is still story... Even if you have left your dishonorable employers, why travel with us? Now it could be that you need exotic ingredents for your potions that may only be deep inland and thus need to travel with a group going that way -- preferably one that includes natives and already has shown the ability to tolerate some foreigners.
The swashbuckler can be a ton of fun, and I can see him blending very easily. He may have appeared drunk outside Oren's house and has been following him around ever since. I'm sure that Oren would love that.

Oren Mitabu |

I'm fine with kicking in 375 gold for my share of the wand.
Nef

Zemwaar |

It would seem the cut for the CLW wand comes to 108 per person? I don't think you should make Wedjat pay though :D
Anyways, I think I can put up around 250 gold (I'll admit I haven't bought any pots ;)

Nefertiti Abdul |

Some potions would be great if you can afford them, Zemwaar!
Everyone else --
If it's not clear, you can all read what is behind my spoilers in a prior post, especially the ones on Rata and Wedjat.. There's very little earthshakingly private there. I was just trying to break up a very long post into more readable bits.
Part of what I'm trying to get a sense of is what happened, when. When did we rescue Rata? Was it before or after I wound up with Wedjat?
We'll also figure Camris into all of this once we know more about his character.

Remember when I said overanalysis was a specialty? Here I go again...
With regard to Aikane's comment about what the party might need, let's look at our combat roles through a Forge of Combat analysis.
The Forge of Combat suggests that party members fall into natural roles in battle:
Hammers = People who do damage.
Anvils = Battlefield Control
Arms = Those who help provide support so that hammers hit better and keep hitting
What we have so far:
Rata = Hammer
Zemwaaar = Hammer
Aikane = Hammer
Wedjat = Hammer -- also mobility for the group's arm
Oren = Ranged Hammer, secondary role is Anvil
Nefertiti = ARM, with a secondary of Anvil with the dazing channeling she has
All combat roles are covered pretty well, so we could accomodate either the Swashbuckler or the Alchemist. The Swashbuckler is another Hammer. His main advantage is his story allows for seamless integration.
The alchemist... The alchemist can offer a lot of hammering from bombs and mutagens. He can also be a terrific arm, providing all sorts of potions and being an extra group healer. He'll be better at healing than Nef, certainly. And he'll have better out of combat skills.
If we can make his story and motivations work, I vote alchemist. However, the group could happily accomodate either.

Zemwaar |

Dang, I love Forge of Combat analysis - thank you for writing that up for us Nefertiti ;)
Perhaps we actually have too many Hammers? IF I hadn't put so much thought into Zemwaar, I think I might actually divert him towards something different, like a Bard or something.
As it is we may be only lacking in Ranged hammering?
One other thing - do we have any pointers on when we will start crackin' with the game?

Nefertiti Abdul |

I'd like to think the role of bard has been at least partially covered... Yes, I don't have bardic knowledge, but I can offer the party a fairly consistent +3 to hit and +3 to damage. I do agree that ranged hammering is a bit lacking, but our blaster might help there.
I'm also curious about when we might get started with the game.
Hmm

Nefertiti Abdul |

Nefertiti may have to try a hug after that dare. :)
Both inquisitor and gunslingers are awesome classes, but I have a lot of rogue love. Remember that you are more hammer in combat than I am, especially if you can flank! I'm not anticipating that Nef will hit anything save in desperation. I do my damage through all of you.

Nefertiti Abdul |

I love the idea of a native Tulitan alchemist. What tribe were you hailing from? Oren is a Kamu. Here are some others:
Moamasu are coastal dwellers, slender and light with long black hair. Known as spear fishermen and pearl divers, they can hold their breath for nearly impossible lengths as they pluck natural treasures from the sea floor. They are also skilled artisans known for their detailed coral carvings. Moamasu treat coral bracers and other coral weapons as martial weapons.
Nakosha are fierce but reclusive hunters that live in the inland wilderness. Though extremely short — just over five feet tall — they are famed for their manufacture of deadly poisons and are avid headhunters. Nakosha do not gain a bonus feat at first level but instead gain the Poison Use ability and cannot accidentally poison themselves when applying poison to a weapon.
Sugalo are famed as the keepers of Tulita lore. Taxed with the duty of protecting many centuries of deep and secretive oral traditions, they know all there is of the sacred tribal knowledge. Sugalo add their Wisdom modifiers to any knowledge checks involving the lore of Razor Coast, its people, creatures, or locations.
Aizanes-Tulita are the inhabitants of the Aizanes Islands at the farthest eastern extent of the Razor Sea. Their culture has been shaped by centuries of contact with the traders of southern and western Libynos and diverges greatly in many ways from that of their western kin. This is primarily demonstrated in their belief in and devotion to the Loa, elemental spirits of near deific power who hold great influence over every aspect of their lives. While the Aizanes-Tulita still recognize Pele, Whale, Turtle, and Dolphin, their reverence long ago turned to the Loa making them something of a pariah among their kin on the Razor. Aizanes-Tulita add their Wisdom modifier to Knowledge (nature) checks due to their close relationship with the Loa that comprise the natural world.

Zemwaar, I suddenly realize that I don't know this, and should... What tribe do you hail from? You look a little lean to be Kami, but after that... I have no idea.

Aikane Redvane |

Oren Mitabu |

wOuLd YoU lIkE tO TrY sOmE oF mY TULITA HALLUCINOGENS?
There were times in my younger days that I could have watched that for hours, lol...

Nefertiti Abdul |

Trippy!
I wonder if Nef has tried Tulita hallucinogens... Probably not yet. That would be hilarious to roleplay when it happens though.

Zemwaar |

No worries, it was kinda hidden when I pointed it out, and some posts back already - Zemwaar is a Moamasu Tulita ;)

How's about some Infected MUSHROOMS?

Nefertiti Abdul |

Moamasu seems like a great fit to the character!

Nefertiti Abdul |

So nohware, whatcha thinkin on startup?
My question as well.

Nefertiti Abdul |

Well, I gotta say this; I KNOW I'll have fun as a Swashbuckler. I THINK I'll have fun as a native alchemist.
Since I came late to the party, which do you as a party think you want from me? I'm thinking Nefertiti is voting Alchemist. Anyone else have a preference?
I did until I saw this post. Go where your fun is.
Player fun & good roleplay trumps forge of combat, particularly since the analysis showed that the group was balanced enough to accomodate either concept.

Oren Mitabu |

Play what you want to play. This is about enjoying yourself, and play what you orefer, imho.

On the other hand... chocolate.
Man, I can sort of understand becoming an evil imperialist for chocolate.
(Though if we go serious, the real culprit for islander misery was sugar... Man, did that stuff have a dark history.)
No, who wants to be serious? Come to the dark side. We have cookies.
-------------------------------------------------------
Today I did my first GM gig for PFS. I had a table of seven, and four of them were gaming for the very first time...
I was really happy that:
a) no one died
b) everyone had a good time
c) they were all playing classes I had read through, and for which I knew the crunch, so that I could give them the fluff!
We were playing one of those scenarios which were full of Mites. The Mites had as standard tactics casting doom on PCs as they entered the room.
I thought... Okay if it's going to happen every time, I might as well liven it up a bit.
You see some more mites.
Raising jazz hands in the air and calling in a high pitched spooky voice:
DOOOOOOOM! DOOOOOOOOOM!
It got to the point where all the party would shout "DOOOOOOOOM!" and raise their hands high over their heads in jazz hands every time I uttered the sentence, "You see some mites."
It helped that the Mites's DC was laughably low -- a DC 10 -- so not that scary a threat, even at first level.
Hmm

Speaking of GMs, I took the liberty of PMing ours. He wrote me back saying that he was trying to catch up, but should be posting back here shortly.

That's a great story, Nef. Sounds like a smashing success was had by all!

Nefertiti Abdul |

It was a lot of fun. Did you guys* do anything special this weekend?
Hmm

*I'm operating under the assumption that you are all, in fact, guys. If I am mistaken, feel free to correct me.

Oren Mitabu |

Nah, the weekend was gloriously boring. Football, bloody Mary's and hanging out with the pooches. Perfect.

Nefertiti Abdul |

Oh you have pooches! What kinds?

I'm a nutty animal rescuer type. I've collected an old St. Bernard mix, a golden retriever mix, a poodle and I've been fostering some sort of scruffy terrier mix the past few weeks. The scruffy is getting a ride on the rescue van this weekend, however, so that's awesome!

I don't want to sound blunt or anything, but I will risk it nonetheless - Nohwear, do you still plan on running this one?
I'll be honest - I'm getting quite engaged, not only with my character, but with everyone else's ideas. I am a usual at the recruitment threads, many times out of curiosity regarding what games are out there, and I see that you are too.
I'm not even sure I am entitled to make this question but... I've seen you post a LOT on other threads, but yet we have heard sparse feedback from your end regarding this game.
Again I apologize for the bluntness, but I'd rather not get my hopes up, if they are not warranted.
And just my two cents, because I realized you are really fond of the setting ever since you opened the recruitment, if you are not interested in running it, and as you initially said, would prefer to be a player, that is perfectly fine and understandable ;)

I think these are good questions. I'll admit I was wondering the same thing when I PM'ed the GM.
Nohwear, should we be looking for another person to GM this one and have you come in as a player? I have to admit that this game excites me a whole lot. It excites me far more than any of the other games that I'm in now. I love the group. I love the setting. I love all the ideas we've shared.
In fact, since we have been sharing so many ideas together... Do we want to do something where we trade off GM duties? I don't want to do a whole long campaign, but I could easily step up and do one adventure that would cover the guys.
I could send Nef off to another part of the islands or imprison her or something and do at least one adventure for the team in this setting.
I bought the full set of books -- not just the player manual -- when the bundle was on sale in case I ever wanted to GM it for my in person group. I haven't cracked open anything but the player guide because I wanted to keep everything that you sprung on me a surprise.
However, I've noted that we've already done a lot of cooperative storytelling. Do we want to do cooperative GMing?

As an active participant in the boards who noticed the same, I feel this question is neither blunt, nor inappropriate given the circumstances.

Oren Mitabu |

I don't have time to be a proper DM, unfortunately. It takes a whole lot of time and preparation for a PBP, and I want to be straight up and not disappoint anyone.

Nefertiti Abdul |

I PMed Nohwear again at 8pm last night, basically asking if he still wants to GM or to come in as a player. Should we give him until 8pm tonight before voting on what to do next?
Meanwhile, who is still here? I've seen Oren, Aikane, Zemwaar. Rata, are you still there?
Hmm

Oren Mitabu |

I agree with Rata. Let's wait to see what nohwear has to say then we can figure things out.

Nefertiti Abdul |

All right, sounds good.
I too would rather not oust Nohwear yet. I just want him to give us an update and let us know what he's thinking.

Oren Mitabu |

Well, that sucks.
So what's the new plan?
