The flurry of blows takes down the underling! The leader grimaces his displeasure!

Suddenly, a pair of crossbow bolts strikes the disgruntled man in the neck! He gurgles a last few choice words, though you are unsure if they are intended for you or his subordinates. Turning around, you see the man from the rooftop that you spoke to earlier in the doorway to the hall. Don't just stand there, lets put out this fire before we burn to death.

You work quickly to subdue the flames and are able to save the important items from damage. A search of the men that attacked you yields some coin (100 gp total) and a clue that would reveal that there is a bounty for your heads, these men had looked to claim them for a reward.

You may take a rest and be at full strength before departing on your journey. You may ask more questions, especially now that the mysterious man has made an appearance and come to your aid.

I quickly spotted the burning hall and came to see if I could lend a hand. I was quite surprised to find you here inside, fighting not the fire but these thugs. He waves his hand over the remnants of the fight you just completed. I've heard rumors of your confrontation with the Lost Ones and, as a result, also heard that the bounty on your pretty heads has been increased. I assume these fine folk here were looking to cash in on that.

The journey to Fortress Graystone is well off the established trade roads and trails of Elsir Vale. Simple inquiries with either Amyria or Sertanian leads you to realize that you may have many challenges ahead, however, neither knows any information regarding your journey beyond the general route. You will have only yourselves to rely on as you make your way to the stronghold.

Everyone must give me a Constitution check along with one of the following skill checks. If someone has already made a check for a particular skill, you must select another (so one per PC). Choose wisely!

Athletics (DC 17) : The PC scales a tree or climbs a rock outcropping to spot signs of the path ahead, or to catch a glimpse of Fortress Graystone in the distance.

History (DC 15) : The PC attempts to recall lore regarding the history of Fortress Graystone, identifying major landmarks that help the party find a safe route.

Nature (DC 15) : The PC identifies natural hazards and potential dangers on the journey, finding a route that goes through easier terrain.

Perception (DC 17) : The PC is able to spot other clues that will aid the party with safe passage.

The party is able to work together to make the week-long journey toward the fortress as safe as possible. On the way, they are able to surpass some obstacles and traps that have been placed along the way, however no one is able to determine just how long ago they were placed.

Haldor loses 4 HD worth of "short rest" due to failing the Con check. He'll have this penalty for as long as you are in this part of the adventure.

For the last day, thick forest has been giving way to rolling foothills. Now, the hills rise to a sudden wall of rocky peaks rising high above the trees. A rough gravel path winds its way along the base of the mountains, the first sign of a true trail that you have seen since your departure from Brindol.

Against the cliff face ahead, a massive stone staircase rises, narrowing as it reaches a set of double stone doors set into the rock wall. Four large statues, each depicting a githzerai warrior in full combat regalia, stand on pedestals watching over the entrance to Fortress Graystone. A small waterfall flows down the side of the mountain, eroding a stone balcony set further up the cliff face and leaving the stone steps slick and treacherous.

Perception DC 18:
Though you see no sign of anyone on the stairs, telltale shadows give away the presence of creatures hiding behind the statues.

Haldor still feels somewhat weak from the exhausting travel and does not feel like charging up the steps. Instead, he casts Sacred Flame on the "blue" gnoll. Dex save 15

That remind me, a few things to note about the area :

Stairs: The wide stone stairs leading up to the entrance are difficult terrain when ascending. Characters descending or moving horizontally along the stairs treat them as normal terrain.

Waterfall : Where the waterfall flows down the stairs, the stone has been worn smooth and slippery. Any creature that falls prone in one of those square slides 1 square down the stairs.

Statues: The four statues depict the ancient githzerai who built Fortress Graystone. A statue provides cover.

Wall and Balcony: The balcony juts out from the wall 50 feet above the top of the stairs. The crumbling stone wall cannot be climbed.

Dex!: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21

Haldor fails to land a spell on the gnoll! Suddenly, the statue to the northwest breaks from its base and moves toward you! As it gets near, it swings its large stone fist at 1d2 ⇒ 1 Fergus!

Slam, 10' Reach: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14

However, the statue is too slow to get by the paladin's defenses! As the statue broke free from its base, stones and rubble littered the area around it. A square adjacent to where it started is now considered difficult terrain no matter the direction of movement. I've drawn a green square to indicate the area.

Most likely you have seen my Facebook post by now. I am trying to keep "the routine" as close to normal as I can so I do not forsee any delays here. While others would drop everything they were doing to deal with something like this I am not one who believes that is the way to face the issue at hand.

I have discovered more about the book and I'm really starting to get interested in running all seven of the adventures included :

The Sunless Citadel: Level 1
The Forge of Fury: Level 3
The Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan: Level 5
White Plume Mountain: Level 8
Dead in Thay: Level 9
Against the Giants: Level 11
Tomb of Horrors: “Higher-level.” It’s tough!

Roll20 also has all of the maps/tokens needed to run these (at a cost, of course) but I'd have to buy the entire set, I can't just purchase Tomb of Horrors.

I don't really want to abandon Scales of War but converting from 4E to 5E isn't clean and it gets more uneven the further I go. Some things don't mesh well and sometimes the story presented in the adventures don't seem to be easy to follow. The idea of running a "campaign" that has been written for 5E does appeal to me.

What are your thoughts? I see a few options :

1. Continue Scales of War and run Tomb of Horrors on the side, either on the forum or in a set of sessions "live", as I originally proposed.

2. Continue SoW and start a new campaign entirely, running/playing both at the same time (with play by post this is entirely doable for me).

3. Continue SoW on PbP and do Tales from the Yawning Portal on Roll20 "live" whenever we can get together.

Rick, I'm also willing to pony up some for the Roll20 modules/maps. No reason you should have to cover the costs.

No worries on the cost, other than golf I really don't spend money on much else anymore. And I have plenty of spare time, I can certainly get together with everyone.

The map pack is released today I believe, while the book itself is out April 4th, though I wonder if my local shop here gets it early like 8DCG might on some things. I'll wander down there and take a look later.

I would rather you run something you are excited to do rather then feel forced.

May be we should shelf SoW for a time and give the yawning portal a go. After all it is not like we cannot come back to the current campaign latter for a change of pace or an occasional one shot.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy doing it. I simply suspect TFTYP would be easier to do since its designed for 5E. And to be honest even I sometimes wonder what it is you guys are really supposed to be trying to accomplish overall in SoW.

The drawback I think will be that instead of being able to cut/paste things from the PDFs I have for SoW, I'll be forced to type out everything or take time to create my own PDFs of the hardcover book. I'll order the Roll20 thingy and see what I get, maybe they have more there than just maps and tokens.

If I do need the book I know some places release it tomorrow, unfortunately the lame comic book shop just down the street from me isn't one of those places, unlike 8DCG. Either I'll have to wait or find a place that sells it earlier.

Well, from what I can tell I don't need to purchase the book as it looks like the thing I bought via Roll20 does include the adventures themselves. Just so happens that they are also set up for four adventurers so we have that covered also!

So, back to 1st level for the Sunless Citadel! You guys can get together and figure out what you want to play in this game. We'll finish this fight with Fengren as it just happens to be the finale (if you couldn't tell). After that we can either play both adventures side-by-side, have SoW go on hiatus, or whatever.

With PbP, playing two games is quite possible naturally. As a Pathfinder player I've been in as many as 12 games at one time and the GMs here sometimes handles as many as 4 games at once. I've actually cut down on how many Pathfinder games I'm in so it wouldn't be any issue to run both if you'd like.

In the meantime I'll try to get things set up for the Sunless Citadel... if I can remember how. In fact, post or message me the email address you want me to send the Roll20 invite to.
