Alright, this is open now. Before we start I'd like it if everyone gets a loose idea of what their character's location, status, etc. Are you in Fort Inevitable, or about to arrive? Have you met the other party members? Why are you in the fort? Have you heard of the emerald spire? There are plenty of quests that your characters can find to lead them to the spire beyond just seeking wealth, glory, adventure etc.
Karist: The hellknights don't just randomly take people in as slaves, so it's far more likely that you'd be an indentured servant of some kind. Are you still in service to the hellknights or are you free? if you are free, how long have you been free?

Howdy, Team Law!
Enrico hails from Taldor and is a mercenary, a sword-for-hire who left home because of a family tragedy that he considers himself responsible for.
I think it would be interesting if we were all assembled for a specific purpose to go to the Emerald Spire. So maybe we haven't known each other for long, but someone hired us?
What do you guys all think?

Howdy team - checking in as well.
So
Karist's story originated with another effort on a PbP and I really need some help putting Karist in a location that makes sense...
I can see him fleeing and eventually getting caught, forced into a form of slavery -- so apparently indentured Capt's comments -- that got him eventually working as the sage's apprentice from whom he learned the transmutation spell telekentic fists.
BUT, I don't know all of the Pathfinder locations and such near the River Kingdoms.
Suggestions?
[PS - have a great time on Spring Break - life lesson, don't try to sort out where your character could have originated with things on the oven's burner...no smoke...but um...yea, at my age I SHOULD KNOW BETTER!!!]

Enrico- There are 4 quests/sponsors efor the spire that would be along those lines. You could do any/all of them.
1. The Goldenfire wizard's guild from Thornkeep has an emissary looking to hire someone to go after 2 missing wizards (Jharun, a conjurer, and Tiawask, an illusionist.) who were investigating the spire and it's connections with other planes.
2. The Hellknights seek to put an end to a powerful bandit gang known as the Splinters, who are believed to have their base in one of the levels of the spire.
3. The temple of the golden key is a temple of Abadar(god of cities). Recently, there have been many attacks by strange undead bawering an emblem of a crowned skull, and with glowing green shards embedded usually in their chests.
4. The sage Abernard Royst, who I believe specializes in transmutation magic (So maybe once Karist was free he became an apprentice to him, and learned Telekinetic fists.) He is very interested in the spire, but is far too old to go adventuring himself, so he wants to hire some adventurers to map each level.
Karist- I think that backstory could work for a lot of countries. Taldor is relatively close, and the River kingdoms are where a lot of people go to escape, as there's almost no laws there.

Option 4 seems like a good choice. Karist could be his apprentice and Enrico could be a hired merc.
DM, can I post in the gameplay thread to dot this thread in my campaigns? It's possible the other players don't know the discussion thread is open. I can PM them next time I get on my computer.
Thoril Falconbow
Sorry I've taken so long to post.
I think Thoril will have temporarily given up on questing to help people after his last attempt went south. Right now, he is just out for glory, riches, etc... However, he'll accept a quest once we start playing if it comes up.

Ok, Capt - I think I have something here:
Orphaned at a young age in one of the larger villages in the lands that lied to the east of Yanmass in Taldor’s far north, Karist was raised by an elderly woman, Calipha who was a weaver of small tapestries, coverlets, and quilts.
Then as to getting to the River Kingdoms note this:
I can see him fleeing to the River Kingdoms, getting caught and being without food, clothing or gold, he was forced into an indenture that he completed within a year. He found work as as the sage's apprentice from whom he learned the transmutation spell telekentic fists.
realized that I don't have any wealth noted...So will roll here
wealth: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 2) = 5x10 = 50 gp - so earned those along the way.
Revised and as Pathfinder ...still have some editing and dot connecting but the background is in place. Thanks again Capt.

Ah, the joys of traveling. Like terrible to nonexistent internet. I'm home now, so I'll get the gameplay thread up in a bit. On quests: you can, and probably should, do all of them, as there's not really any reason to get the extra gold. :) Additionally, for #2, you'd be on official business for the Hellknights, so you wouldn't need a letter of warrant. Also, Karist, just take average gold for your class.

This may be helpful for your exploring:
Common knowledge about the Emerald Spire: The Emerald Spire is an ancient Azlanti ruin in a large clearing in the echo wood. The ruins are a green glasslike substance surrounding an green spire jutting more than a hundred feet above the surface but far, far deeper underground. No one knows how many levels the emerald spire has, because no one has ever been to the bottom. It is a potentially very profitable dungeon, but is extremely deadly, and is known to cause random portals to other planes to pop into existence from time to time, so it is clearly extremely magical. The first and only above ground level is inhabited by goblins.
Corath
Sorry for the late post. I was a little busy.
I am in the fort, likely training to become a Hellknight.
I likely know of Karist is the Hellknights are the ones that placed him in indentured servitude.I've heard of the Spire.
One reason for likely going to the Spire, at least for Corath, is the lost squad of Hellknights that ventured into it. Finding them might just be the mission that gets him promoted into a fully fledged Hellknight Signifier.

Is it alright if I use names and information I know from Fort Inevitable right now? I think our main concern is getting started, and that would help speed thimgs up with regard to me, at least.
I'm referring to stuff I can explain away contextually, such as the name of the person who posted the poster, the name of the person who runs the inn I'm staying at, or the fact that there is a lake nearby (seen while entering the Fort). I realize this will not be an acceptable practice in the actual Spire - it looks like our focus right now is on justifying our excursions into the spire, and this will mean I can act without needing a description of everyone/everything I see.
I'll try to stick with stuff that will probably remain true even if you aren't running everything straight out of the book, so I still get to experience Fort Inevitable as you interpret it :) Mostly I'm just referring to what I did in my gameplay post - knowing the name of the person running the inn, assuming the person who put up the poster told me who to contact.

Their decision to have Starcloak personally present may make more sense with some context for the area. I have the Pathfinder Online: Thornkeep book (which really has nothing to do with Pathfinder Online, it's really just a module and adventure setting rolled into one), because it gave me more info about the Echo Woods and the area surrounding it. In the book, it explains that the Goldenfire Order is composed of 5 full magic users and 3 apprentices, so the two missing wizards make up a large chunk of her organization :)

Hey, weird message board question.
Can I set this string/campaign to where Karist is my primary alias, or does doing that affect all of the campaigns?
Thoril Falconbow
Is closing the door a viable strategy? We both got pretty high initiatives, and by closing the door we'd be going from acting first to reacting to whatever they do to get through the door.
Enrico Marcellano
Well, regardless of whether or not you close the door, I think you should hit their front-liner first. I mean, you have the initiative and so it's vs FF AC. Maybe you can hit one and Karist can telekinetic fist the same one and drop one of their team before they go. Then they're on the defensive, you know?
Maybe hit one and retreat a bit? We have to wait to see their marching order (I setup a map).
Enrico Marcellano
Enrico Marcellano wrote:We should've brought some hellknight initiates or something with us :-)Gee, thanks. :p
Hey, no disrespect! I was talking about bringing along some NPCs to even the numbers :-)
Honestly, we're stuck between a rock and a hard place. The main entrance is loaded with goblins and we can't see past the limits of Thoril's darkvision. Now we have the rival party ahead of us. If we just close the door and try to flee we could have enemies on both sides of us, or allow them to go rouse the goblins and bring more enemies against us.
It might be in our best interest to try to hit them hard enough to make them not want to mess with us. I would say we could try diplomacy, but with three of their number being goblins/hobgoblins, I don't see much reason IC for me to try...

But, Captain Collateral...what is the distance between Karist and where folks are located in his part, and those in the Chaos party...trying to understand the "line" ahead of Karist.
sorry posted that to the game play...but my thought is that I try the wind blast BUT it can affect everyone in a direct line of thirty feet...
So, tryign to understand the line.
Enrico Marcellano
I put the tokens on the map, but I didn't know the chaos party's formation. They are likely in a different order, and they may be spread out. The blue line is to indicate where the door is.
Our formation is correct, though, as it gives us the best visibility from our individual light sources. I don't know if the corridor we're in is even that long, though. We'll need CCD to draw in where the walls are (and the chaos party needs to update their marching order).
Karist, if you want a different token for your guy I can swap it. You'd just have to pick an image for your profile.
Karist

Had to scroll back to find out how to find the map, LOL. BUT, it's great...I am fine with that image too...now if I could just figure out how to get an image to stick to the KARIST alias that would be great. Hey I got it to work...yea scared 20 year old image...it will do
So the telekinetic thing failed...I think I could take a move action and fire the sling at the same time...That would put me up behind you Enrico on the next turn.
Enrico Marcellano
Karist, I just changed your token on the map to match your profile picture.
So Corath, my attack should trigger your shield spell and also Thoril's attack.
So Thoril, you should actually get your ready action and another turn before I go (and try to attack you, not that you know that's going to happen, though I suppose our casters could Spellcraft it and shout a warning).
How do you guys think we should proceed?
If Corath could enlarge Thoril he should be able to grapple and pin any of the three.
Who do we try to take out next? The caster is going to be trouble if he keeps hitting me with Murderous Command. Any suggestions?
Karist

Boy having out a battle like this at the start is really interesting. I think I can try the telekinetic punch again...see if that works this time.
Enrico Marcellano
Yep, that'd be good to snipe hurt guys.
Enrico Marcellano
DM CCD, can you please take us off of active players in the Chaos Party thread?
Just go to the Campaign Info tab and click "Edit this campaign". Scroll down, find the list of active players and uncheck the boxes next to our name.
This will stop us from getting the updates when new posts are there. Thanks!
Enrico Marcellano
I've thought about it and I think a big part of the draw for me for this game was the dynamic between the two groups and having a chance for conflict between the two parties. Now that we've removed that part, I think that's been a big contributor to my lack of motivation. I'm sorry to put everyone in a bind, but I'm going to have to withdraw from the campaign. I wish you good luck in finding a replacement, and thanks DM CCD for running this!
Captain collateral damage
Bye, Enrico! Sad to see you go. Will make a recruiting thread shortly for a replacement.
Edit: As the chaos party has also lost a member, I put it on that recruitment thread, here

Folks, I am traveling for the next few days. i can check in and I can post short responses from my phone...but there could also be some weird autocorrect results too! Back late Friday, but will be checking in.

Back and reconnected with a laptop in the front of the house now...so that may make posting a bit easier as when my teens are here, they take over computers, lol. Thoril, need a healing before we head up?
