I think my only nerf that I need to make is that you can't use Deadly Aim with your guns (if you want to shoot for touch).

Does that apply to every advanced gun, or just the double barreled ones?

I feel like its more consistent to say every advanced gun. I don't like that they changed the ruling between advanced and early firearms.

They didn't actually change the ruling:

Quote:

Early Firearms: When firing an early firearm, the attack resolves against the target’s touch AC when the target is within the first range increment of the weapon, but this type of attack is not considered a touch attack for the purposes of feats and abilities such as Deadly Aim. At higher range increments, the attack resolves normally, including taking the normal cumulative –2 penalty for each full range increment. Unlike other projectile weapons, early firearms have a maximum range of five range increments.

Advanced Firearms: Advanced firearms resolve their attacks against touch AC when the target is within the first five range increments, but this type of attack is not considered a touch attack for the purposes of feats such as Deadly Aim. At higher range increments, the attack resolves normally, including taking the normal cumulative –2 penalty for each full-range increment. Advanced firearms have a maximum range of 10 range increments.

What? Ugh. Nevermind. Its fine! Its fine. I can deal with whatever. I'm sure the scatter will be balanced by accidentally shooting allies.

Scatter probably isn't very balanced at all. But we'll see.

And anyway, one of the things with advanced firearms is that they're touch out to 5 range increments, not just the first.

There's a reason people usually avoid allowing them - I've only ever allowed someone to use one in a situation where it was more of a curiosity of the character than anything. And he went on to be the hands down best ranged attacker in the group, due to that revolver.

Which is not to say that I'm against it being allowed, just that I'm thinking that this might end up having guns be veeery powerful.

So, what are we going with? Deadly Aim works or no?

Because I think I've got an interesting idea for a Gnome Mysterious Stranger 1/Alchemist (Grenadier) 3 that uses a revolver and a bunch of alchemical explosives and fireworks.
Think the stereotypical "demolitions expert", but a lot more gnomish and a lot more explosive.

Almost certainly CN. CE (but bound by contract) if you'd allow it.

For my attuned weapon slot, could I have an attuned amulet of mighty fists? Anything else will be functionally superfluous for me level 6 onwards.

Yeah, I guess we will see whether scatter is balanced. Sure, you can go ahead and use Deadly Aim. I was only ever going to disallow it based off of the idea that early guns (The guns that I assume most of PF's balancing work was done on) couldn't use them.

@Bigrig, you can be whatever alignment you want to be, as long as you're not a dick to your party.

@Torgar, if you're thinking of attuning to the natural weapons of wild shape, you must attune to one type of natural weapon at a time, and it only functions while you have access to it. You can also attune to "unarmed strike", but I don't think that's what you want.

So one at a time, but I can choose which attack that is each time I change shape? Is that correct?

And thank you.

Wuliev the Indignant wrote:

No, each time you attune. Which you can do 1/day, and it takes an hour. And it's not each attack, but each type of attack... so you could attune to "claws", wild shape into a black bear and have two +1 claw attacks.

ok, awesome. thanks again!

My Crunch is finished, the fluff is in tow. I have a pearl of power CL 2, so I'm going to switch around my default prepped spell loadout to be more versatile.

Alas, I am complete. Gaze upon my imperfections and weigh my soul against whatever ancient standards ye may.

Torgar is NOT this well spoken in person. I'm just in that groove right now and am hitting it hard.

So I noticed, since alot of people dropped warforged, it seems I'm the only one :/

Not that I have a problem, that just means I have no mechanical competition. :P

Deadly aim can't be used with scatter anyway, as it can't benefit from feats. It's more useful for the people with a rifle or pistol since firing both barrels has quite a big chance of misfire.

Scarlet Sentinels usually swear to a person. Can I shift that to swear to a cause or an ideal? Specifically I'm looking at perhaps there being a radical wing of the church of Abdar looking to further the ideals and goals of the church by any means necessary. The goals hallows the means kind of deal. The Scarlet Keepers of the Vault, naturally named that way for all the blood they have to spill for their cause.

I think lawful neutral still fits for alignment. He'll be strongly bound by his oath to the order and the church. The end results aren't even evil, to bring civilization and law everywhere, even if he's looking to profit (heavily) along the way.

Sure! I don't see why you can't swear to an ideal.

I think I might drop this game, there is a lot of people way more into this already, and firearms are getting a lot of use already.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Sheet's done.

Since we've a Duergar and a Warforged in the party I'm sure any hair-prejudice should be an amusing juxtaposition to racial-prejudice. The style's a reference to an Alfred Hitchcock book character who hwas a shaved head, eyebrows and beard, lending him a 'curiously agelss' appearance- just a bit of description I quite liked.

I will try to get a first draft together tonight. Will probably go full cleric of Torag (engineer/stonemason/architect and expert on arcano-mechanical systems. That's right, SKILL CLERIC) with domains in Artifice (or Construct, or maybe just Earth) and the Black Powder inquisition in place of a second domain for firearm proficiency and gunsmithing. Perhaps he will craft wonderous items in the future as well?

I toyed with the idea of cleric/wizard/mystic theurge because his Int will be so high, and i may still think about it some more, but Pathfinder tends not to favor the multi-classing.

Question for gm:

Crafting firearms during character creation is fine, yes? Can we craft advanced firearms?

This was already answered (and why everyone are talking about them): Yes we can.

Multi-classing in pathfinder often isn't great, but some prestige classes are pretty good. I especially like Evangelist (and you do get boons from Torag), though Exalted could work well for a cleric as well with full casting progression. There are also quite a few prestige classes from path of war that are pretty awesome Battle Templar would work for a cleric, though that would obviously add a martial bent rather than an arcane one.

Note that Firearms are considered martial weapons under these rules, so if you get martial weapon proficiency from somewhere you would only gain a single feat from the Black Powder inquisition.

Hi leinathan! Chess here. Very excited with the game. Here's my submission: the grumpy and old fashioned miner/stonemason Aramant.

Roster #2!

Aramant Drakkuskail - N dwarf geokineticist 4 [geologist, miner, grump]

Thak Val Zsing - LN dwarf soulknife (gifted blade, nimble blade) [bodyguard, explorer, crazy?]

Gherz - warforged scout alchemist (chiurgeon) 4 [medic-bot, activist, artillery]

Torgar the Grotesque - duergar druid (saurian shaman) 4 [ugly]

Dargrin Sweetbreath - dwarf aerokineticist 4 [?]

Not sure what Fury of the Tempest was saying about "lots of people". This is the smallest recruitment I've ever run. Thanks for playing along with me while I get the characters I want out of this. We're pretty much just waiting on oyzar and galorit to finish up...

@Thak Zsing - I just looked at your sheet! It looks good to me. I had to check out all of the sources and stuff to see where everything was coming from. I understand that you attune to your soulknife and then you enhance it with your class features to make it +2?

@Aramant Drakkuskail - Your character's super flavorful and appropriate! I like it a lot. The only issue being that you're saying you're childhood friends with Ba'Ad... who's approximately 220 years old at the beginning of the adventure. It's certainly possible for you to have known him when you were a child... but for every year past... say, 40, you want to have known him, you have to make your character a little bit older.

Oyzar's character here, though I'm not done with the full background writeup quite yet. I'll present that in it's enterity soon enough I hope (though I did mention some points from it). I think I'm mostly done with mechanics (except for minor mundane gear). I guess you might want to look over mechanics to speed things up.

I'm reusing an old unused alias, sadly I can't rename it to "Judge Balazar the Red", but I hope it's fine regardless.

Lein, since Soulknives can buy 'crystalline focus' items that basically add +1 I figured it was indeed the best way to go. I'm also assuming that the attunement rules don't say if you use two weapons you get +1 to both, thus the different calculations for each weapon.

Oh, just a quick question. If and when we get to level 7, can I retrain Deadly Agility into something else, since my archetype will give me Agile by then?

Yeah, the attunement rules do have rules for gaining attunement to extra weapons, but you don't get a second weapon or a shield attunement until level 8.

Yes, you can re-train it... although you'll have to pay the cost, obviously. And spend the downtime, and find someone to train you.

Oh, gherz is Lawful Good... which is a rare alignment for me, I hardly ever play a character so kind and... well not a weirdo.

Roster #3!

Aramant Drakkuskail - N dwarf geokineticist 4 [geologist, miner, grump]

Thak Val Zsing - LN dwarf soulknife (gifted blade, nimble blade) [bodyguard, explorer, crazy?]

Gherz - LG warforged scout alchemist (chiurgeon) 4 [medic-bot, activist, artillery]

Torgar the Grotesque - LN duergar druid (saurian shaman) 4 [ugly]

Dargrin Sweetbreath - dwarf aerokineticist 4 [?]

Judge Balazar the Red - LN dwarf stalker (judge) 4 [explorer, Abadaran, zealot]

I finished stats and everything, sat down to re-write Vallen, and stared at the computer screen for about an hour. Nothing. Zilch. No inspiration.

I find this strange, because I consider myself a very dwarfy person. But something is wrong, and I can't seem to get in the groove. I apologize for making you wait on me, and then nothing come of it, but my heart doesn't seem to be into it.

In conclusion: I'm going to withdraw my submission and wish you all the best of luck. Strike the earth!

Hello there,
I don't suppose you have a little room for one more? (I always seem to find these games of interest right as they're finishing up!)
If its a yes I'll be back in a few hours to post up a concept or too. If not best of luck with your campaign!

Alright, I think I've finally actually figured out what I'll be submitting, but it's a secret, so I'll just be back later today with him finished!

I will try to get mine posted today. Sorry, I wasn't familiar with Dwarven history in Golarion, so I have been reading up, looking for inspiration. Finally had the concept click last night and I'm writing it up today.

Quick question, however, what year is it? Is 4745 the end of the 20 years of work prepping the ship or is that when they started and blast off was in 4765? It's a minor detail, but I want to figure out my character's age and background right. Thanks!

They started work in around 4730, finishing in 4750. It is currently 4760, when the dwarves are finding their new planet.

I'm not in any real rush. Feel free to submit if you like.

Hey Leinathan! Sorry, I didn't know the age of Ba'Ad, and "took appropriation" of the NPCs to help tell Aramant's story :) I adjusted it now (only Aramant was a child when they met), and made Aramant older (although not middle aged yet - using this site Age, Height & Weight. I hope it looks better now!

It's okay :) It's a homebrew campaign with a lot of little details I've worked out. There's a lot that you won't know, at least at first. That's what I'm here for, to tell you!

Reginald Thanthorpe
Oread Cavalier

Reginald is not the usual suspect for an expidition as such, in a sea full of inventors, alchemy and powerful mages, his martial prowess seems somewhat subdued when surrounded by such people.

Furthermore, at a cursory glance his ability to handle animals, whiles admirable, is somewhat subdued on a vessel so full of druids and other lovers of nature, there is already plenty of redundancy as it is on those fronts.

Despite this however the larger-than-average Oread greets all he meets with a quiet smile, and it can become difficult to maintain anger with one another when a large freindly indidividual steps in and helps negotiate peace. Often however he tends to keep to his quiet self.

A good look at his quarters however display his true reason for being amongst so many elite, neatly organised tools and equipment are upon a table, and many sheet of paper are spread upon its surface. Images of the few astronomical bodies they have passed are charted among them, guesses at size and terrain scrawled neatly in the approriate areas. Even multiple copies of the ships maps exist, clearly replacements for those that get damaged!

When tied together Reginalds purpose becomes obvious, a well trained man who can cover vast distances by horse, and map all that he finds, his job will be to ensure that, wherever they end up, the terrain, the locations of resources and dangers and bodies of water shall be recorded for the colony, his skills practised at every opportunity.

Hope this is suitable for a character, I figured it would be important for a group of explorers to have a mapmaker available to record what they find in detail. If all is fine I'll stat the character.

Seems like an appropriate job to me! As long as you answer these Qs:

leinathan wrote:

1. Where are you from? Preferably this would be a specific place in Golarion... if you're a warforged, it's likely going to be "inside the ship"... But an important consideration for warforged is "how old are you"? You could have been made before the journey, being older than most warforged, or you could have been made potentially only weeks before the campaign's beginning, a last wave of constructions before landing on the new planet.

2. Why do you want to go into space? Leaving behind your entire planet, potentially forever, is a big commitment... what drives you to do this?

3. What qualification, accomplishment or connection do you have that allows you to come? Why should whomever screened the candidates say yes to your entrance?

4. During the actual space-travel part of the voyage, what was your job? You can't just sit around and wait, because your only skill isn't useful for the travel.

5. I'd also like some basic info about your character - a physical description, an explanation of their personality and what their own alignment means to them... you know, descriptive stuff so I know what they're like.

6. It's not required, but I'd like some kind of.. you know, backstory. Some explanation of what their life has been like up to this point.

Okay answering questions in order:

1. A minor noble house in Ustalav, he was adopted and shared their name, but was not considered to be a noble himself, he traveled to many parts of the world when he discovered his like of mapmaking, and made a decent amount of coin for his efforts. He did however have to eventually face the fact that he was aging significantly slower than his human parents and brother, which slowy caused him to feel less and less at home with his family.

2. Reginald never quite fit in with the world around him, his family were kind, and his brother (the only surviving member of his original family) good to him, even so, he did not wish to join the usual trend amongst his family and its allies of joining the Mendev crusades or aiding the defense of Lastwall. When the opportunity presented itself his family encouraged him to go, instead of holding back. This is also where he got a large amount of his martial training.

3. Reginald got somewhat lucky in his application, during his stay before he was due to be interviewed he encountered to artifices arguing in the street, he did not knwo it at the time but they were both important to the ships construction. He successfully managed to break up the argument and negotiate a compromise between the two, earining him a hearty recommendation from one and a begrudging from another. This in combination with his display of his mapmaking skills and animal handling successfully obtained his place on the voyage.

4. Reginald tended to animal on the ship (I assume a small number were taken, such as mounts for exploration and perhaps some chickens for eggs and the like.) helping to overcome the difficulties of keeping them exercised in a relatively confined space. (Reginald will have Profession (Stable Master) and naturally Handle animal.) When not tending to the animals he used his diplomacy to talk to members of the ship which became homesick and comforted them. He also served as a manual laboror for the less physically able.

5. Standing at 5 feet and as many inches, Reginald is unusually large for a Oread, it shows on his broad and heavyset frame. His hair and eys follow the usual trend of being the colours of earthy brown and dark brown respectivley. His skin however is slightly lighter than one would expect, looking tanned but not dark. He is Lawful Neutral, he respects the structure and command of the ship immensley, and he will happily aid his friends and allies to the best of his ability, but may forsake a stranger if the situation is dire enough, he is loyal and hard-working but is unlikely to risk his life for those he doesn't know.

6. I tried to get as much of this into the over questions but the gist of it is simple; He was adopted whiles a young boy by a kind minor noble couple and raised with an older brother. When he was young he was taught the martial methods of the family, falcata and lance where his weapons, and good armour alongside a good steed were important. When it came to learning a profession he found the concept of mapping out the land for all to understand attractive and began his travels. With each visit home however he realised his human family would age more and more, when his parents died he realised he no longer felt at home in Ustalav and spent his time wondering. Whiles his last living connection, his brother Reynard, was alive when the ship set off, reginald knows he more than likely died during his voyage.

Sorry for the small wall of text, I wanted to be detailed!

Okay, I'm going on a train ride all day. In gonna check the thread tomorrow. Anyone who needs anything from me should say so. Ill come back with some various things to say about different characters, and ill pick my party. Better make sure you're all done and have everything you wish to show me.

For Dargrin

1. Dargrin comes from a mine near Hagegraf. His family was among the first of the grey folk brought in. His father was involved in the massive effort to separate the mountain for liftoff.

2. Space is a new frontier. There are threats that come from beyond the stars. The duergar chose to fight the encroaching threats from below. It only makes sense that they stand above as well.

3. He apprenticed with the shipbuilders, learning how to build, maintain, and crew the ship. That alone would have been enough. After the accident, it shows that he can survive the depths of the tapestry. His connection to elemental air is a unique asset.

4. He was on the engineering crew. (I assume that Craft:ship and Profession:sailor can be adapted to this. Otherwise, I'll change this.) With his ability to breathe, he often worked with the warforged on the skin of the ship. He likes the freedom out there.

5. Like other duergar, his hair is all at the bottom of his head. He's not as bulky as most, and is quite agile. In the mines, that's a drawback. In space, he's adapted well. He enjoys the freedom.

His alignment comes from being focused on the task. He focuses on what he has to do, helping his friends, and just getting along. He's not the kind to pause and reflect on philosophy. He's got a lot of the pragmatism of his forefathers, though without the cruel edge.

6. Actually, most of this is listed above. Since adulthood, his life has been the ship and crew

Way too tired to finish things now, so unless you feel like waiting another day I guess I won't be able to finish in time :(.

I'm not gonna be available to check anything for real and do real work on this until tomorrow. Today is my transit day.

Take your time GM. From what I understand, the general concensus on these boards is that the weekends are off-days, which may or may not be true for our game.

Regardless,
Take it easy and don't overextend. I hope your trip is peaceful and wholesome.

NM here:
This should be the character finalised. Maybe a few bits and bobs of mundane gear. this also has the sheet of my animal companion (Dobin, a simple name for a simple horse.)

I'll also have to see if I can dig up more thematic profile image than this one on the morrow.

The sheet itself is a direct BB code copy-past from hero-lab and their shouldn't be anything third-party in there. If I get the opportunity tommorrow I'll do a more structured write-up of Reginalds past, it should be for the most part covered however. In the meantime I am drop-dead tired so no more from me for tonight.

Am out of town this weekend, so I didn't get all of the details worked out. Was aiming for Monday finishing when I'm back home. I will try to get more of the crunch worked out in the morning if possible since I'm still missing a lot of details, sorry.

But I did try to flesh out my background quite a bit and answer your questions. I hope that's enough for consideration, but if not, that's cool. There's plenty of interesting characters submitted!

Good luck!

Aam, Kensai Pahmet Dwarf

FINAL ROSTER

Aramant Drakkuskail - N dwarf geokineticist 4 [geologist, miner, grump]

Thak Val Zsing - LN dwarf soulknife (gifted blade, nimble blade) [bodyguard, explorer, crazy?]

Gherz - LG warforged scout alchemist (chiurgeon) 4 [medic-bot, activist, artillery]

Torgar the Grotesque - LN duergar druid (saurian shaman) 4 [ugly]

Dargrin Sweetbreath - N duergar aerokineticist 4 [explorer, mechanic, engineer]

Judge Balazar the Red - LN dwarf stalker (judge) 4 [explorer, Abadaran, zealot]

Aam - NG pahmet dwarf magus (kensai) 4 [monk, warrior, idealist]

Reginald Thantorpe - LN oread cavalier 4 [cartographer, diplomat, bastard]

This is the final roster of characters that I'll be considering. Because I like his concept, I'll give Aam's player a little bit of leeway in finishing up his crunch. As I said, I'm not in a hurry... and I also don't want to let the recruitment drag on forever. I plan to select five of these eight.

I do have one question for you guys - several of you have very small posting frequencies or post-counts, indicating that you haven't been on the boards very long or that you don't post much. I plan for this to be pretty consistent, and pretty long-running... ideally. What can you tell me to tell me that you plan to stick around, despite evidence perhaps to the contrary?

Truthally I am new to the online play by post, my account was made specifically because I was invited to a differant campaign.

Being the internet I can give you little more than my word that I will always be paying attention to the campaign. I can however tell you that with the way my college is timetabled, I will be free enough to make multiple posts a day, and I am usually up late which seems to be compensating for the time-zone differance so far. The only day I anticipate I will struggle to post on is a monday as I rarely have more than an hour to myself in the afternoon.

Other than a monday I promise to do my absolute best to keep up posting alongside the rest of the group if selected, I will also attempt to infrom the group if something gets in the way: e.g. lack of internet, house move, sickness etc.

Thank you for the consideration. I will try to get the crunch finished up soon.

Also, I'm not a very high post count, so to answer your question - I have been on the Paizo boards for years, but mostly as a reader than as a poster (although I did have some freelance credits back when Paizo ran Dragon magazine, which shows both that I'm pretty involved in RPGs and that I'm an old timer around these parts). ;)

As for PbP games, I only started giving them a try earlier this summer and have been really enjoying the games I'm in. I post regularly (although random weekends are spotty when visiting family) and despite only participating in PbP for a couple/few months now, I'm all for a long term game and especially like these "high concept" style campaigns.

I am on a new account, but have been on the boards for awhile. I used to play in PbP's. The only reason why I have changed names is because with my other account I couldn't find the password for. I used to play PbP under the name of That Other Guy. While I had that account, I was living in China and was very active in each of my groups. My time in China ended abruptly, and due to several implications of my life change I was unable to play regularly, and ironically during the same time the games I was in ended up dying.

My life has since blossomed again, and I have been able to return to this community. I won't be leaving for any foreseeable reason, and the reason why I left the last time isn't a thing that will happen again.

Hence, I am here and will remain, with a markedly ravenous obsession for roleplaying.

FYI - I think I am all set except for equipment and spells. But this should be a clearer picture of my character's stats. Aam

Quick question - given his background would a desert/Osirion region variant of the Veteran Jungle Guide trait be ok? Just seemed fitting and I was looking for a Survival boost.

Thank you again for the consideration!

Alright! I'm back, with a decision. Thanks for your input, and all your efforts' making characters.

I'll be taking the following players with me into the Dark Tapestry:

Aramant Drakkuskail, the geologist and geokineticist

Reginald Thantorpe, the cartographer and soldier

Torgar the Grotesque, the druid with an almost lizard-level Charisma

Aam, the magus who is basically a monk

Dargrin Sweetbreath, the aerokineticist who doesn't have to breathe

I've created a Discussion thread for you guys to congregate in. Feel free to do so. Say hi to each other. Work out whether you know each other. You know, stuff. We'll start as soon as I'm ready.

Somewhere along the way I lost the spark for Balazar. Sorry about that...
