Caromarc told you about rumors of werewolfs. But the adventure has you covered. You can still cut your way through this AP on two daggers, one of which you already have.
From the cache in the crypt you have a dozen silver arrows.
Maybe a masterwork silver war razor - from the informary
A dozen silver crossbow bolts - With the ghasts in the burned down sanctuary
A lot of weapon blanche from Vorgstag and Grine
And the most powerful weapon to fight the werewolves: The +1 shapechanger bane dagger from the Crooked Kin.

Brother Grergof Varsk |

Grergof used the two hours in Lepidstadt to buy a mace made of alchemist's silver besides his new Full Plate which was luckily exactly in his size and body shape standing on display at a local weapon smith.
To which I replied:
Yep, how did you guess what I was going for ;)
The only thing I was going to specify is if possible I was hoping for masterwork full plate.
And then followed up with
Foxy, just so you know, I restocked some normal items as well in my quick shopping jaunt.
4 Quarts of Oil
10 normal arrows (to replace those I shot)
Silk Rope (to replace the hemp rope and supplement the rope of climbing if need be)
Crow Bar
and Shovel
Relevant posts for My shopping was above, now I will admit, I misread your initial post and replaced Mace with flail, but the full intention was to pick up:
Masterwork Full Plate
Alchemical Silvered heavy flail
4 quarts of oil
10 normal arrows
Silk rope
Crow bar
Shovel.
That's why I specifically stated that I was pulling my Adamantium heavy flail out when I started walking over here as well as picking up those regular items "as well".
Given I did post accepting your initial conditions, if you want me to switch back to a heavy mace I can.
Darius:
Gergof asked about the inhabitants of the woods specifically. As a professor he's well aware that being prepared for an expedition is important. So I agree with foxy, it's not metagaming to use that knowlege to equip.
If you look at my character sheet, you'll see he's got the silver heavy flail, Mithral dagger and the dozen silver arrows he has been hauling around since that phrasma's cache... so at least in my head he's well prepared for whatever comes.

Darius Redgrave |

Didn't he only tell us after we went shopping though? Ah well, I missed out. I'll just have to live with it. I'm sure I have a spell or twot hat will help till I get something silver.

Foxy Quickpaw |

It's no biggie. My Barbarian cut his way through this entire book on the shapechanger bane dagger. And daggers are simple weapons anyone can use. But if your build is made for two handed fighting or you have a signature weapon like longsword for Iomedaean Priests this might suck style wise and cost some on the weapon dice. On the plus side a werewolf will not judge you for using a silver war razor instead of the sword :P

Darius Redgrave |

I also have the Weapons against evil spell which bypasses some damage reduction. Think that'll help a little bit till I can find someone with silverware :)
But yeah. Someone pass me the War Razor once we kill the bug lady.

About nets.
ettercap:
DC 15, hp 4
Weaverworm:
DC 19, 10 hp
An entangled creature can escape with a successful Escape Artist check or burst the web with a Strength check. Both are standard actions with a DC equal to 10 + 1/2 creature’s HD + creature’s Con modifier. Attempts to burst a web by those caught in it suffer a –4 penalty.
...
Attempts to escape or burst the webbing gain a +5 bonus if the trapped creature has something to walk on or grab while pulling free. Each 5-foot-square section of web has a number of hit points equal to the Hit Dice of the creature that created it and DR 5/—.

Darius Redgrave |

Just want to check something.
The thing has 15ft reach right? How much space do I have to move around in?
How many AoO will it get if I try attack the thing in melee, even with a charge?
Can I drink a potion and/or cast without any AoO on me?
I see Casting Defensively is +11 vs DC 17. I've never done it before so how does it work?
Sorry for the questions but need to know before I decide what to do. :)

Brother Grergof Varsk |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

To answer the casting defensively question:
Declare you are casting x spell defensively
roll your d20 + conentation bonus(in this case 11)
If you roll under theDC, you lose the spell and nothing happens.
If you roll over the D.C you cast the spell and no AoO is triggered.
DC is 15 + double the spells level being cast.
So casting a 1st level spell is easier then a 3rd level spell.

Sorry, but I have to nitpick here. Failed my will save to resist.
If you cast defensively you don't provoke an AoO. No matter what's the result.
If you don't make the roll you lose the spell you try to cast. To make it you have to roll equal or over the DC as with all other DC rolls. If you make it you cast the spell as normal.
DC is as Grergof told.

Darius Redgrave |

So she hit me with the web, can I cut through the web with my sword?
Or is my only opting a Str check or escape Artist?

Brother Grergof Varsk |

Do I have to move another round to get to the maggot fight? Or am I there now?

Brother Grergof Varsk |

How long am I paralyzed for?

Brother Grergof Varsk |

Darius, do you want you or Me to heal up Spugnoir?
Then we grab the silver knife/bolts and wolfsbane and move on. There's nothing else we can do here right?

Foxy Quickpaw |

I get the feeling there is an important support class missing in the rule books:
The preschool-teacher
Before starting any travel (end of encounter is also a new start) she asks
- has everyone gone to the lavatory
- did everyone pack his/her trail rations
- has everyone weather appropriate clothing
- are the tools available for the endeavour
- is everyone at full health
Special abilities:
- Can pull standard equipment that got forgotten up to level x 100 gold out of her backpack without buying it up front.
- Can apply healing retroactively if there would have been time and resources
- Can revert adventurers to their four year old self to scold them if they are repeatedly not following her advice for taking precautions
;)

Brother Grergof Varsk |

Man I totally forgot about the intro letter we got... that should make this intro much better, assuming of course it really is an intro letter and not a note that says kill the bearer on sight

Foxy Quickpaw |

You're lucky they didn't use Hamlet as a template for that ;)
Here is the Pre-School Teacher prestige class
Prestige Class
Pre-School Teacher
Hit die: d8
Requirements
To qualify to become an pre-school teacher, a character must fulfill all the following criteria.
Alignment: Non chaotic, good
Skills: Heal 3 ranks
Spells: Ability to cast 2nd level Cure spells. (tbd)
Class Skills
The pre-school teacher's class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Perception (Wis), Bluff(Cha), Intimidate (Cha), Diplomacy(Cha), Heal(Wis), Knowledge(Nature)(Int), Sense Motive(Wis) and Survival (Wis).
Skill Ranks at Each Level: 6 + Int modifier.
Lvl / BAB /Fort/Ref/Will/ Special / Spells per Day
1st / +0 / +1 / +1/ +1 / Alertness, Persuasive / +1 of existing spellcasting class
2nd / +1 / +1 / +1/ +1 / Be prepared / +1 of existing spellcasting class
3rd / +2 / +2 / +2/ +2 / Soothing Song / +1 of existing spellcasting class
4th / +3 / +2 / +2/ +2 / Scold / +1 of existing spellcasting class
Alertness, Persuasive: At 1st level a pre-scholl teacher gets Alertness and Persuasion as bonus feats
Be prepared: At 2nd level a preschool teacher is always prepared and never forgets anything.
- She always asks anyone if they went to the toilet
- Checks that everyone has weather appropriate clothes
- That everyone brought his/her trail rations and anything
- That everyone is at good health
(Bring everything): A pre-school teacher got everything ever needed in her backpack. Anything that fits in her pack can be produced from it without expressly buying it previously. No magical items can be produced that way. And the limit for that ability is the pre-school teacher's level x 100gp. This amount can be reset by spending the cost of the produced stuff so far in a settlement with a general store.
(Retroactive healing): A preschool teacher can declare to have healed her kids in the past at any time if there was time and the resources to do so. This allows for every action that would have improved the character's health if he/she was not at full stats.
(Know everything): A pre-school teacher never forgets anything. When faced with a situation where events from the past would help solving it the pre-school teacher knows that. (The player may promt the GM and he will reiterate all relevant facts already known by the group to her)
Soothing Song: At 3rd level the pre-school teacher can soothe fear and pain. By singing a song she can supress any fear or pain effect in others if she manages to beat the DC of the effect with a Perform(Sing) check. Starting a soothing song is a standard action maintaining it a free action. This is usable once per day.
Scold: At 4th level a pre-school teacher can scold anyone who behaves badly. This turns the person into his own four year old self. This is a compulsion effect. The DC to resist the scolding is 14 + charisma modifier. The person scolded is allowed a will save each round, but if he fails the first save he does so at -4.

IMPORTANT:
I'm going on vacation starting tomorrow for two weeks. And I don't know if I have internet at the place. So if it comes to the worst you won't hear from me until 30th of July.
If I have some internet, or can organize some mobile replacement, posting will continue as usual.

Brother Grergof Varsk |

To respond about the flail: nope. I pulled my non masterwork heavy flail (Silver) not the masterwork Adamantium one. Gergof was worried given all the talk about werewolfs.

Brother Grergof Varsk |

Ya I thought about that, but it's no more ridiculous then a pole arm fighter with his backup Greatsword.

Brother Grergof Varsk |

Ok, I have to ask, how does Kroitzer do that much damage/have that many shots?
I assume he is using Deadly aim. + Enhanced strength bow for the +7 damage.
But it almost looks like you are using Vital Strike and Multi-Attack at the same time.
But as far as I'm reading, that doesn't work together.
I'm asking because in another game I'm running someone who is slowly working their way up the archer tree and I'm looking for any tips and tricks I may have missed.

Foxy Quickpaw |

Kroitzcer has no stat block given, but is told to be 7th level ranger.
I assume archer, for he has a bow on the picture. So the natural things to take is rapid shot and manyshot as ranger feats.
Seventh level with a +1 Bow with Str. rating 2 and deadly aim with a dex of 18 (15+2human+4th level advancement) 14 Str.
Attack 7BAB + 4Dex +1Magic -2 DA = +10 (ok forgot the magic in the posts)
Damage 1d8+2+1+4
First shot two arrows via Manyshot
Second via Rapishot
Third as iterative.
And I didn't add in favored enemy bonus which would probably be animals +4
But I also got a set of fairly good rolls with all hits.
But if you're interested to maximize take a look at Tyrandro (my alias). I didn't take manyshot when I could to go for the animal companion so I'm behind on damage dealing but for ranged attacks the Archetypes are nice.
Depending on your GM Improved Precise Shot might be more interesting than manyshot at 6th as you can shoot through a keyhole at no penalty.

Brother Grergof Varsk |

Ahhh... Multi-shot does double the bonus damage too. Ok that explains it.
Thanks for the advice, I'll take a look. I'm doing this with a cleric, so I'm going to be very much feat starved, but It looks like you only really need 5 feats in order to get a pretty good archer up and running.
Point Blank, Precise, Rapid shot, Deadly Aim and Many-shot. That's 7th level as a human, but I'll only have two attacks (as I wont have the iterative attack yet.)

Foxy Quickpaw |

Point Blank Shot (Human Bonus)
Precise Shot (1st)
Rapid Shot (3rd)
Deadly Aim (5th)
Manyshot (7th)
There are quite some guides out there about archers and I've never player a full archer through all the levels. But it seems you'd need Clustered Shot if you don't have all and every arrow with you (silver/cold iron/adamantine/good/bad/ugly). Because vs DR 10 shooting a bow becomes a tedious job.
Improved precise shot is also really nice once you qualify. Because in Dim Light you'd always get a miss chance without. And there is always someone or something standing in the way.
But if you manage to make a cleric into a viable archer I'd be really interested in the build. Erastil I guess?

Darius Redgrave |

There are so many variations of archer. But I've also not seen a Full archer fighter build. Wonder if it would outdo a Ranger Archer.

Foxy Quickpaw |

Fighter archer would outdo a ranger for pure damage for sure. With weapon specialization and weapon training he'd do better.
Also you'd have most of the feats needed by level 2. But he can't do anything else. No magic, no skills, no good saves.
Pally also makes for strong archers. Solving the DR problem in an elegant way.

Brother Grergof Varsk |

I've heard that Bards actually can make good archers too, but I haven't tried to crack that nut yet.
Hey Foxy, looks like you found a solution to your posting on the road issue. At least I assume you are still traveling...

Darius Redgrave |

I played an archer in a couple games. Mostly 5e. So wanna try out different ranged types. I made a PFS Hafling Sling Fighter, but only played in one PFS game. I need to get hom into some more PFS games though.
And in another game I've got a boomerang throwing vigilante.

Brother Grergof Varsk |

I need to get hom into some more PFS games though.
Darius, or any of you, are you interested in a PBP PFS scenario?
I'm in one that is forming and we are looking for a couple more players.Just so you know, it's a MUCH slower post schedule. (They really do one post a day, so combat can take a couple weeks sometimes) All the characters are level 1 or is just starting, but the other players in there have been consistent posters with me for a couple years now. The plan is to run those scenarios that we all wanted to play but have never had a chance.
If your are interested, let me know and I'll see about getting you an invite to the game.
