1e Kingmaker group seeking new GM!

Recruitment

So our Level 1 party seems to have lost our DM (for the second time) very early on in a promising Kingmaker Campaign. We lost our first GM with no warning after the first combat they seemed to have completely left the boards), and our replacement GM has now been MIA for over a month (last in-game post over 2 months) right as the party began exploring the Old Sycamore.

The group has pretty good chemistry, and we’d love to carry on, like I said we’re still level one so a prospective GM would pretty much have carte blanche.

You can check out the game thread here:

Tentatively interested...

About my gamemastering:

  • My style is very subtle. I leave it up to my players to decide what interests them and don't press it if they choose to ignore something that could be important. Basically, I try not to meta-game(master) unless it's necessary. I've learned in the past year, this does not work for everyone, so I want to be very up front about it.
  • I work in an industry that has some ebb and flow with work, so I will be busier at times than others, so posting may slow down as a result once in a while or more likely the time of day I would post will change.
  • I've been a player and a gamemaster for Kingmaker many times. Only 1 of those games (as a player) ever moved beyond Book 1 for various reasons.
  • I do not own any of the updated Kingmaker 2E material even the 1E conversion book they did for it, so if working with the OG 1E material is good enough, I have all of it.
  • I've received both rave reviews and harsh criticism of my gamemastering, so I do encourage you to decide whether you think I can work for you as a GM carefully and discuss it among yourselves.

    Questions for your group:

  • How much technology do you want to see in this game? Numeria being a (giant's) stone throw away opens up all kinds of doors in this department.
  • How do you feel regarding encounters/people/dungeons not included in the Kingmaker AP proper?
  • How much do you want to be involved in the actual worldbuilding of the Stolen Lands? I'm very much happy to go above and beyond what's included in the AP modules, but I would need your help in trying to keep track of everything as quite frankly, GMing would not be my full-time job when I'm not actually working my day job. :P
  • What's your collective desired focus for this Kingmaker? Exploring and adventuring, politics and intrigue, settlement building, crafting and gathering? Kingmaker is wide-open, and having a focus in mind can help me as a GM keep the pace and direction of what interests the players without bogging you down with all kinds of undesirable sub-systems and skill checks on areas of lesser interest.

Please feel free to ask me any questions you need answered to help your decision. I'm open to receiving PMs if you prefer. :)

  • Good questions.

I'm running Adela, the Cleric of Pharasma for the party. My answers will be mainly from my point of view. We did seem to have a good balance with the group.

We all were working towards restoring peace and law to the stolen lands and worrying about building a Kingdom once that was done. Adela herself is more a follower than a leader. So not interested in becoming the king, she is happy to be High priest of course.

I run games myself and know that real life can interrupt the game. As long as you inform us you'll be busy it's no problem.

Technology being introduced? Adela won't use it but if others want to explore the wonders I have no problem.

Adding new parts? That would be good, Kingmaker is a very well known AP. Adding new encounters etc. Can only keep the players on their toes.

On the worldbuilding? Handling the loot sheet is all that's needed currently, easy enough for one of the party to deal with. If we do make it to book two then we can discuss it as a party and decide how we will handle building the town and surrounding lands. What decrees we will introduce and so on. Some GM's like to do the book-keeping, some don't. So as players we can do what is needed.

Desired focus? Currently it is very early on. We've dealt with the Thorn river bandits and were just dipping our toes in the Old Sycamore when or GM sadly went missing. I like to feel my characters out and have them grow a bit before giving them real goals. Currently Adela is hoping to bring the word of Pharasma to the Stolen lands, and deal with the undead that must be running free after so long being an uncivilized & lawless place.

Thank you for considering running the game. Any questions you have for us please ask.

I understand completely that sometimes life pops up and the flow of posting is subject to change.

I'm open to technology showing up where it works or makes sense, but have no particular preference for it. But I'm open to the idea.

Anything interesting that makes things fresh for both players and GM is good. As long as the main theme stays on track, adding new material will likely only add to the game.

I'm happy to do my part to help with the worldbuilding. I know it can be a lot to handle as GM (I have a theory that GM burnout is the reason why there's more abandoned Kingmaker campaigns on these boards than any other).

Exploring and adventuring first off, but I do like the concept of the kingdom building, and plan to eventually take Leadership to help pad out some of the kingdom roles etc.

I could take this over if Pinvendor isn't interested (I have a habit of adopting orphan campaigns).

I would run this with the 2nd edition content from the new release added. So as a result I would ban the Leadership feat as you'll be picking up plenty of NPC companions along the way.

@Players: I have done a quick read (think not every word) of your gameplay so far, but not yet your Discussion thread. I can certainly advise that the previous GM's style may not exactly resemble my own, so I'm curious how you felt about the pacing and whether the answers and acknowledgments the GM gave your characters' actions were sufficient. I like to encourage roleplay, but I've learned I need to curtail it so it doesn't reach the extent that people become bored.

    Rhiann Sokol:
Tibold Crenshaw here! Pretty sure you have a character that played with mine in another Kingmaker some time ago. Hello!

Since it seems your crew transitioned from yet another game, I haven't read through that nor do I yet understand the Recruitment rules with which we're working , but I'll get to it soon enough.

As I see this like any other recruitment, you all are evaluating me for your game. I make no assumptions that because I piped up first, you will pick me, and no hard feelings if you don't.

@Adele: I appreciate your response greatly. Particularly, your comment related to your PC's motivation:

This is exactly the kind of thing I like to know as a GM, so I can incorporate events and encounters which will interest and help drive your character's excitement to continue and evolve. I encourage any of you who wish to provide such details to do so, and this can be saved for Discussion thread if I'm selected. This may, of course, be PM'd if they are private motivations. I know some PC background information is better discovered through organic roleplay with the other PCs than info dumped up front.

Once you have made your decision between me and GM Wulfson (or any other contenders you show up by whatever cutoff you have in mind), please let me know. Again, I'm very happy to answer any questions you may have regarding anything I've discussed or offered.

Also, I generally use Roll20 for maps and stuff, so I will create a game there for the combat encounters and a 2nd link for the exploration hex map for ease of use.

I think I'm going to bow out of this one. I'd rather run this from the beginning than try to shoehorn an extra NPC at this point.
So, good luck to you all.

So looks like we have a consensus. @invendor We're happy to have you if you'll have us. We're all definitely invested in roleplay along with the action, and Kingmaker gives a lot of room for that.

Rhiann is determined to eliminate the bandit problem and establish somewhere people can settle in relative safety. Eventually she wants to send for her family. Her father is still alive as is her younger sister (who will likely be her cohort when leadership becomes an option)

I appreciate the opportunity, and I look forward to working together for an enjoyable game. :D
