Well, I hope that this is not the end of this game!! Whatever rules we use, are just the mechanism for us to have fun and play a great game. I agree the rules are a bit dodgy, but then again so was 1e when it first came out. Let's soldier through it and play!!! maybe??!! Just my 2cp worth.

Male Human

Yep, that’s also what I said. Happy to move on with FG@G. I mean, I got this far in making a character, I’m basically ready to go…

Male Dwarf Fighter/Cleric HP: 10 AC: 3

me too...adding skills and now buying equipment!!

Grand Lodge

Ready when y'all are.

Female Dwarf Ranger(Guide)

HI, I am interested.

Grimmsgate Status

Hey Insnare, thank you for dropping by, and good to have you on board! You can peruse the rules I have compiled so far in this profile, for character generation. But gor starters, roll 4d6 drop lowest, in order STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, CHA. Go!

We also kinda introduced ourselves way earlier in the thread - feel free to do so if you wish, it is completely optional.

----------

@Everyone: Apologies for the hiatus, had to take a moment to mull over if I wanted to go forward with the idea. Moment taken, so lets keep the ball rolling. I reiterate this is an experiment - I am not claiming this rule set/system or my houserules to be the best, or written in stone. But I am interested in giving them a try, and see how it pans out, hopefully improving things as we go along. If anyone would rather step out, no harm, no foul - just let me know. Otherwise, game on.

I also decided to invite Insnare to join us, as I know he/she is a fan of AD&D2e ;)

Lets have a 'roll-call' with everyone's character aliases - post whether they are complete, if something is missing, if you have any doubts, etc.

Just need some adventuring gear and background and away we go!! Where in Greyhawk are we starting? Want to be from someplace close-ish.

4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 3, 4) = 16 ST = 13 4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 5, 1) = 14 DX 13 4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 3, 1) = 10 CN 9 4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 3, 5) = 14 IN 12 4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 3, 4) = 15 WS 12 4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 5, 1) = 8 CH 7

Hi, my nom de guerre is Insnare, aka GMEdwin I have been playing for awhile on these boards, shoot I think a decade. I do love THAC0 for some reason.

I will probably need some time to swallow what I want to play. This game will be in Greyhawk, will we be in the city of Greyhawk. I might have to whip out my old 2e boxset.

Do we use kits?

Our 'launch' point will be in Urnst.

- We will not be in the City of Greyhawk;

- Similarly to Helaman (his stats were also all very average) you can reroll your stats with the same method if you wish, and keep those ;)
- We are not using kits :P

I am ready (I believe) to r o c k... apart from background. TBA in a day.

I’m done apart from some fluff.

Welcome aboard Insnare!

Female Dwarf Ranger(Guide)

Ok, I thought I could play a member of the beggar's guild but let's see what I can roll up 4d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 4, 2) = 10St 9, 4d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 2, 3) = 9 DX 7 4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 4, 6) = 17 CN 14 4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 1, 4) = 14 IN 13 4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 5, 5) = 12 WS 11 4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 5, 5) = 22 CH 17

Darn, I am shy to play either a Bard or a Druid. I guess maybe I can play an enchanter. I will stew on it today.

Male Human

Hmm. I have to admit I’m back to vacillating. Still need clarity on whether Weapon and Shield actually does anything, but now just realised that I would need to spend another combat skill point to actually be proficient with a bow?!? Or I am -2 to hit with it.

I mean, I know the old systems could be borked, but this system seems set to penalise you. And my point about extra rules making things less open/useful seems to be made abundantly here.

In original ADnD a Fighter was proficient in 4 weapons, with a non-proficiency penalty of -2. FG@G appears to be the same, but gives you more “options” to try to to be interesting or even more useful, only to make those options use the same pool as the proficiencies for weapons. So while there is an argument for this being an upgrade in “choice” between versatility (4 whole weapons to choose from!) and specialisation (yay I can use two weapons or be Ambidextrous, kinda) I’m not sure I like it.

@Obermind: given a) I keep finding nit-picks and don’t seem to be able to get over it, and b) I wasn’t really a fan of ADnD 2e and c) you have enough folks that are interested, I think I’ll bow out.

@Insnare, sorry to jump just as you arrive, I do remember our Thunderscape game with DM Bloodgargler fondly…

Female Dwarf Ranger(Guide)

Oceanshieldwolf, that does bring me back. It was a fun game that ended well too soon.

That is fair enough OSW, however please keep something in mind - the weapon (and non-weapon) proficiency system from AD&D2e is completely optional. We can simply forget about it, and roll with the basics:

- Fighters are allowed to use any weapon and armor;
- Paladins are allowed to use any weapon and armor;
- Rangers are allowed to use any weapon and armor, but several of their abilities are usable only when wearing studded leather or lighter armor;
- Wizards cannot use any armor, and they are limited to staff and/or dagger;
- Clerics can use any armor + bludgeoning weapons, including blunt hurled weapons, but not missiles;
- Druids can use clubs, sickles, darts, spears, daggers, scimitars, slings, and staves. As Armor they can use leather and padded armor plus wooden shields;
- Thieves can use clubs, daggers, darts, hand crossbows, knives, lassos, short bows, slings, broad swords, long swords, short swords, staves. And as armor they can use leather, studded leather, padded leather, elven chain armor;
- Bards can use any weapon and as armor chain mail or lighter, and no shields.

----------

So that being said, a few notes for all:

- It seems there is no big issue with the non-combat skills as described in the FG&G ruleset, so I intend to stick with those. Let me know if you disagree;
- Regarding Weapon Proficiencies, I am ok with either system. We can:
1) Remove them completely and go simply with what I described above;
2) Use the non-weapon proficiency system from the AD&D2e Player's Handbook;
3) Use the Combat Skills from the FG&G ruleset;

- Last but not least and now regarding Shields, I will houserule two things:
1) Remove the 'directionality' of attacks vs Shield bonus. For simplicity sake, if you have a shield, you get the shield bonus regardless of whether the attacks come from the front or the back;
2)Remove the need for the shield to be strapped to your arm (which basically means it can be dropped if needed);

Let me know your thoughts on the 'Weapon Proficiency' options (I still think 3 is a good option as it gives you flexibility if you want it), and on the proposed changes to shields.

Oceanshieldwolf wrote:

The way I see it, if you spend a point in this style it means you get the defensive bonus of the shield, AND you can use a shield bash in place of a standard attack, or attack with sword and shield in the same round (with the 'fighting with two weapons' penalties).

Similarly to the original AD&D2e rules, you get a -2 to your attack with a weapon with which you are not proficient/skilled with. That has not changed.

Bottom line and in general, I believe the idea here is to provide options to players (you can take them if you like it, or you can ignore them if you don't like them). Exactly like AD&D2e:

- You can always use a weapon and shield if they are allowed by your class;
- You choose a number of weapons to be proficient with, by spending Combat Skill Points (instead of Weapon Proficiency slots);
- You have a penalty with weapons you are not proficient with (the penalty varies according to your class);

Optionally (different from Core AD&D2e, but partially similar to the Player's Options set of rules), you can spend combat skill points in weapon groups, ambidexterity, combat methods, or specialization further along the line. These are options, you can just ignore them, and go with exactly the same reasoning as the original AD&D2e, spending combat skill points only with weapon proficiencies. Done.

I am fine with the non combat skills as well as the Combat Skills from the FG&G ruleset.

@Obermind: gonna sit this out. Sorry to have been such a bother!

It feels like a wrench seeing as I’ve had great games with each and every one of you (except Flanderdash!) but there’s a…few things going on in the technology sphere…that are making me re-evaluate PbP on an open forum, and how I’d like to navigate that. So it’s only kinda half the game system I’m struggling with and half giant existential crises. Yay!

Have fun guys, and Obermind, I am sure you will run a great Greyhawk game. I’ll be there in spirit.

@Insnare: yep, it was a whirlwind of gunfire, great combats, an awesome setting and then a complete collapse. A great pity! Was reading through it just the other day and Jimara’s kite shield and musket were great.

Male Dwarf Fighter/Cleric HP: 10 AC: 3

Sorry to see you go OSW!! Perhaps we will run into each other elsewhere on the boards.

As to the proficiencies...I am also fine leaving it as presented in FG&G rules.

Hi. Back.
Impromptu trip out of town for funeral stuff. (Not THAT far, but enough that we stayed overnight). Just got back.

I'm good with FG&G and will go with whatever rules you choose. We'll make it work.

Welcome back Flanderdash. Hope all is well.

Me too. The Weapon proficiency penalty is actually not that steep for warrior types, it's more of a pain. For NON warriors, it's steeper... BUT I am okay with that.

Grimmsgate Status

Ok cool, then we continue forward with the FGG approach.

Regarding characters:

Dalanthiel (Ranger) - ready
Drimm Stonehammer (Fighter/Cleric) - ready
Valder Smiggins (Thief) - ready
Dhreld of Admundfort (Paladin) - ready

We seem to be missing Insnare's (not decided on class yet) and Eric's (Mage) characters only I believe?

Female Dwarf Ranger(Guide)

Hi, can I put my char together on Thursday? This week has been a nightmare, so far.

I am here just finalizing my PC now.

No worries, and no hurries from my end. Take the time you need to finish up ;)

Just checking in.

We're good ;)

I should be ready to go on Monday, looking forward to it!

I am looking at a busy work week, but should be able to get us going as soon as we have all characters ready.

Sounds good. I’m looking forward to it too!

Ok

A small figure appears in the distance, clearly running raggedly. As it gets closer you make out a rather bedraggled, unkempt figure clearly short of breath. The figure finally reaches you, and through wheezy breaths and a hacking cough he speaks.

”*Hkoff*. *Hkekh*. *Hkoffh*. I changed my mind. Again. Am I too late?

The ever-gracious Obermind assures me I am not. I’m done quibbling about rules. Let’s have some fun. Apologies for stirring the pot. A bit. Ok. A lot. Actually it wasn’t me it was the other guy. Signed Rick, no….Neil.

Male Human Fighter 1| HP 10/10| AC: 7 (6 w/shield) |PP 14 RSW 16 PP15 BW 17 Spell 17| Move: 10

Ready to go. All skills reconfigured and equipment to reflect new approach. Also am at 3/4 Light encumbrance so Speed 10. I think that is right.

Welcome back OSW.

Female Dwarf Ranger(Guide)

I am still here. I had my character was ready and then Paizo ate my post. I want to redo it.

Checking in here with Okore Netell from Nyrond. Still working on BG but ready to go. Old School GM Obermind: If you could look him over I would appreciate that.

I hate when that happens.

Yes, I am ready.

Hi, this is INsnare. I will update Dzhim shortly.

I thought your nose would be bigger.

:)

Welcome aboard.

Grand Lodge

Still ready...

I pm’d the GM he hasn’t posted in any of his games since the 6th. He last reported that he had a busy week at work ahead of him. I ope all is well am I will update you all if I hear from him.

Unfortunately, it has been over two weeks since we have heard from the GM. I hope all is well with him and he just got tired of the boards and is taking a little break.

Anyway, I’m a bit bummed this didn’t become a thing and it was nice getting to know you all a little better. Many of us are already in games together but I look forward to seeing everyone around the boards!

PM me if this becomes a thing again!

Best - smiles

@GM - PM us if you ever make it back and let us know you are well.

Female Dwarf Ranger(Guide)

So, this may be an odd request or something. The GM has been in my 2e game for awhile. I have generally wanted the party to consist of six players and currently I have 4. I was wondering if any of you old school fans would be interested in creating a AD&D 2e character with about 12,000 xp to fit in a Zakhara(Al-Qadim) game.

Currently, the group consists of a Shai'r, Corsair, Fighter/Priest and a Rogue. We could use two or three more characters to round out the party. If you are interested, that would be great!

Grimmsgate Status

Hey everyone,

I have decided it could be a good idea to reopen this thread for a couple of reasons - first, I think we had some interesting discussions going on here regarding 'old-school gaming', and I would like to continue those. I know there are a few message boards out here in the Paizo forums which have similar topics, but they seem few and far apart - I tend to lose track of them. So I guess this could be as good a place as any other?

Second, I am now entertaining the possibility of running a S&W game here on the boards, and those in this thread (plus some other extra invitations I have now extended) would be the people I would be interested to play with - nothing fancy, just a one-shot to get a feeling of the S&W ruleset plays out, while also introducing something in the way of skill handling (I am thinking the d6 approach).

Wanted to know who is around, and if you have any thoughts on any of this?

Best,
OS Obermind
