Pathfinder 2E Menace under Otari

Recruitment

Good Afternoon Pathfinders!

My name is Niles and I’d like to run a PF 2E module. I’m recently back from an 8 month hiatus away from the boards and online pbp gaming, but I’d really like to ease back into things. I have lots of experience running PBP games, but only in the Starfinder/Pathfinder/5E rulesets. I have 0 experience with PF 2E. So, I’m gonna run a short module from the Beginners Guide to introduce myself to the system.

Expectations:
1) Min 3-5 posts per week (Including the weekends). Combats in PBP can be lengthy, so I’d appreciate more posts during combats, even if the post is literally just moves/rolls.
2) Always be pushing. PBPs die if no one is driving the action, so I run with the rule of 2. If two players suggest a course of action, that’s what we do unless someone else posts something different.
3) Don’t do things that are cheesy. If I have a problem with something, I’ll probably allow it the first time and then PM you about it.

I use Google docs for maps and allow you to edit the documents

That’s it really. I’m a laid back GM. I’m not a rules lawyer. I enjoy gaming and I’ve sorta missed it this past year. I’m really running this module to learn, so I’ll take any criticism or pointers that anyone has.

Recruitment

All you need to do is post the briefest concept here to be eligible for selection. Seriously, don’t bother with a full statblock unless you really like making them. Just a quick blurb like
“Hey, I’d like Hajar to be in this game. Hajar is a congenial kelishite who worships Sarenrae. He’s a champion who believes that even the most corrupted deserve redemption. He wields his gods scimitar and shield and defends the weak with all his heart and soul.”

From that I got that the character is Hajar, he’s a melee type and he’s a “good guy”. That’s really enough for me to choose a party.

I’ll pick a party (between 4 and 6 players) on Monday Feb 1st with the goal of starting play on Wednesday Feb 3rd.

Hey Niles, nice to see you back on the boards.

Daxur is a goblin wizard. His master took a chance on him and trained him, but most just see a 'goblin'. Has a large chip on his shoulder and a deep desire to accumulate power to prove 'them' all wrong. Not really a bad sort, just a bad attitude.

Oh. I missed some important stuff in my post.

1) The adventure is for 1st level characters with the intention of getting them to 2nd lvl by the very end.

2) The adventure is set up in 2 distinct parts. When we finish part 1, I'll survey the party and if everyone is having fun we will do part 2. The adventure also dovetails right into another module set in the same exact location, so if everyone is still having fun we can start that one. That adventure "Troubles in Otari" takes characters from 2nd-5th level and is set up in three "chapters"

This sounds like fun :-)

Zinari Diamonds is a catfolk witch. She was a gambler by trade, and good at her job, until she was cursed with bad luck. She turned to a Patron, who offered her the chance to change her fortune, by pushing her bad luck onto others. Her future as a professional gambler was still shaky, but as an adventurer, she could make some coin by plying her new abilities.

Hello,

Still playing PF1, but own most of the PF2 collection. I am also looking to learn the game.

Below is my submission for your consideration:

Maxillar is a Taldan born into a military family and named after one of its greatest Generals. Following in his fathers footsteps, Maxillar joined the military as soon as he was eligible. His first post was as a bowman on Oppara’s wall. Proud, diligent, and ideological, Maxillar saw first hand the politics and maneuverings for power. Disgusted, he served the minimum time in his enlistment and quit his post. Facing family disappointment, he left Oppara.

Cool! Okay, I'm going to throw this guy in there. Kromnir

I actually built him for another recruit that just ended. Obviously I was not chosen but that is why he's completely done.

Kromnir's a dwarf barbarian who's lived in Otari most of his life. A real friendly sort who's fairly well laid back for a barbarian... and a dwarf. ;) A good warrior type who fights for those who need protecting.

And for the record, I am also trying to learn PF2 myself. I was in one game that lasted about a month or so(I rocked 20 total posts in that one) before the DM vanished and haven't been able to make it in another since. But to be fair, there have been SOOOO few PF2 games offered up.

So if you have "0 experience with PF 2E", on a scale of 1 to 10, I'm probably around a 2. Maybe. But don't quote me on that because I could be lying. :P

Hey, Niles, good to see you back.
Been a while since the Falcon's hollow days :)

I've played 2nd Ed ONCE with someone holding my hand but it was a while back so I'm still unsure of a lot of it.

But here goes...

Staryth is an elf whose had a rough and crazy life. Including, but not limited to being kidnapped while he was a youth. Ironically, it was another criminal of a different sort who discovered his plight and 'stole' him away at great risk. Thus liberated, Strayth got a crash course into a life of theft and smuggling learning a strange 'as it harm none, steal what thou wilt' approach which he's still evaluating for himself. Now, traveling home on his own, the elven rogue is stopping at Otari hoping to get fund his way back to his family. But he's an elf. He's got all the time in the world really, so no rush.

Hey I wanted to throw my hat in the ring just in case.

I wanted to play a Human Mwangi champion of Gozreh. He is a former pirate who was saved by local fishermen when his ship wrecked during a terrible storm. After his life was saved he turned over a new leaf and dedicated his life to redeeming others like himself that have strayed from the path of good. Carrying his trusty trident and shield he works to stem the tide of evildoers and show them that there's a better way. He's a boisterous man who still enjoys a good sea shanty or work song from time to time.

Hi GM Niles, I am almost completely new to PF2E having been poking around at it for a while but never having built a character even. I am looking forward for a chance to give it a try!

So I do not have a crunch, but I have a concept - Reknar is a no-nonsense ex-army sergeant who has been through a lot. One of the things he has learned in recent years is a strong arm and a nice blade will usually not be enough to win you a scuffle on its own - you need to use your brain. And if you manage to have a handful of people you can trust with you, then you have got a real chance to succeed.

He has been in prison, and served in the military - at the end of it all he came out acting rugged and callous at first sight. Those who care to look a bit deeper however, are many times surprised at the lengths he will go to stand by the ones he believes in.

Crunch wise... I am not sure :) I am thinking a martial bent character, but with as many options as possible, a tactical mind, etc.

EDIT: Went and read some more tidbits here and there, and mechanically I see him maybe as a Fighter/Bard, or Fighter/Marshal?

Hello there!
After a timeout from the board due to last years circumstances (just too busy and drained) i want to pick up PbP again, since it's the only time usualy i get to play instead of GM.
I also started PF2 lately, mainly gming and besides PFS2 i planned to run this as well, going into Troubles in Otari and the Vault AP eventually (with 3 groups...)
So, having the chance to be a player as well would be great!

You expectations sound very fine to me, also "cheesy" might need some definition or figuring out from all sides. Usually the definitions can be quite different. Communication and compromises are key though, as always, at least in my eyes.

I don't really have a PF2 character idea at the moment because i need to look at it from the player side, but i'm on it.

On a sidenote i'm also interested in Starfinder games!

Cool. Glad I got some interest. Here's a recap (for my own sanity) of interested parties.

Melee Types
Kromnir (Javell DeLeon) dwarf bruiser who protec and attac
Unnamed Human Mwangi (bbilal) champion of Gozreh, former pirate who works to save souls. Is Gozreh into that kinda thing, sure I guess.
Reknar (Albion) is a no-nonsense ex-army sergeant, party leader type

Ranged Types
Maxillar (Mioki) disillusioned Taldan archer

Arcane Types
Daxur (Spazmodeus) goblin wizard with an attitude
Zinari Diamonds (Mitch) catfolk witch gambler

Divine Types

Other
Staryth (Ridge) elven criminal on the move

Interested but no concept yet
Hayato Ken

If I mistakenly categorized someone please lemme know

Noob question: aren't Champions 'kinda' divine characters in PF2e?

Albion, The Eye wrote:

Yeah, but in my head I think of "divine" as spellcasters (Oracles, Clerics etc)

re: Cheese Honestly, I don't have a definition except that "I know it when I see it". However, Ridge was one of my players in a very long running game set in Falcon's Hollow (that started similarly to this one) and he can vouch for me when I say that I tend to let players do their thing. I adjust my side if things get wonky.

Ex: I had to adjust mobs DOWN in a campaign because my party was so ridiculously unoptimized.

Pathfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

Sounds good! Honestly can't tell about optimization in PF2 so far though. The level 1 stuff i ran often was really dependent on dice and went both ways. Especially critical successes and failures on saving throws are game-changers, but also critical hits.

Also i now have 2 character ideas, but need to look into how that works exactly in PF2 and will then narrow it down to 1 of course.

Sounds nice. Here’s my submission:

Carote, a catfolk oracle of the cosmos. When he’s not purring at/trying to befriend anything that moves, he can usually be found completely lost. He’s not the brightest guy and struggles with the concept of gravity.

Yup. Can and will vouch. My Inquisitor went haring off on a lot of side bits and helping NPCs that I'm not sure were meant to be that important and Niles humored me. The other players had their own characters with their own agendas and from what I remembered, Niles tried to accommodate within reason.

I'm still getting the hang of 2e myself, so I'm all in on a good beginner's box adventure.

Charyx is a kobold ranger who was spared by a paladin of Iomedae and found the behavior perplexing. After following her for a bit and spying on her behavior, he is determined to figure out why she was so merciful and emulates her to the best of his ability in hopes of understanding it better. He's not fully familiar with WHY he's supposed to do good and help others, but he figures if he keeps doing it, eventually, something about the strange lifestyle will make sense to him. He still struggles with the whole affair and sometimes, his old selfish habits get in the way, but he is acutely aware that he isn't supposed to do certain things. He hopes to meet the paladin who spared him again some day and show her his progress (as well as get a few questions answered).

So, I made an assumption on Charyx....if I'm wrong please let me know.

You assumed correctly! He's more about staying back and picking off enemies. Embracing the time honored kobold tradition of "The best fight is one I don't have to fight at all". Debating between Flurry + Bird companion + Snares, or leaning hard into crossbows and Precision. Possibly the former. Give bad guys a trifecta of trouble to deal with.

Hi Niles,

Since this is an intro scenario, and we have a lot of newbies signing up, would you prefer that the players are newbies? I have been playing PFS for some time, so if you like, I could drop out to give someone else a chance.

Also interested and new to PF2.

I'm working on putting together a cloistered cleric of Desna. Half-elf, returning home to Otari after training and some bad experiences in the big city.

Honestly, not especially. Because I'm completely and utterly new, I'd like at least someone with Pf2 experience to call me out when I make mistakes so I can learn the system.

Hey Niles,

Definitely interested in throwing my hat in the ring here as well! I'm brand new to 2nd edition too. Bought the core rulebook about a year ago and created a couple of characters, but it never really went anywhere.

I know you were just looking for basic concepts, but I got kinda inspired and created a whole alias! Lol Here it is. The sheet is about 85% complete. If selected, I would need to clean up the formatting a little bit and buy gear.

Massimo

Also had a question for you after reading my concept.

Question for GM Niles:
In my backstory, I gave Massimo an affliction for desecrating the grave of a priestess of Calistria. I was thinking his clubfoot will give him maybe a -4 penalty to Dexterity. I would still want the character to be viable for the long term and not become a liability to the rest of the party. Do you think redemption would be possible relatively early in the adventure? Would that fit the personality of Calistria who's a very vengeful goddess? I'm certainly open to any suggessions or advice you may have in this area. Thanks!

** spoiler omitted **

-4 to dex is pretty hefty.

This is an example of a "moderate curse" granted by Calistra.

"Moderate Curse: People react as though you’re insulting them, even in normal conversation. Whenever you attempt to Make an Impression, the outcome is one degree of success worse than the result of your roll. If you converse with someone over a long enough period of time but don’t attempt to Make an Impression, you still insult them, and you suffer the effect of a critical failure to Make an Impression"

Can vouch for Niles being an excellent GM. Looks like a game to watch.

I'm running 3 PF2 campaigns at the moment.
Will have my character ready sunday evening at some point, need to decide between 2 options i want to play.

Just dropping a line to say I am still here. Waiting patiently ;)

How about I take a -2 penalty to Dexterity, GM? I like the roleplaying aspects of it, and it wouldn't really affect the character mechanically since I purchased a breastplate for armor. I updated my character sheet in case you're okay with it. Thanks!

Just have a few more things to clean up, but the sheet is almost complete. Eagerly awaiting decision day on Monday! Lol

Pathfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

The GM could allow you to use the voluntary flaw rules and let you apply both -2 to one score.
Otherwise gimping your character on purpose without getting a trade-off really isn't a good idea, it fiddles with game balancing, makes you unreliable for the rest of the party and the GMs life more difficult.

Probably not the best idea in a game where the GM said they want to figure out how it goes because they are newish to the rules of 2e.
Just my opinion though^^

My character:
Amunet-Ra is a warpriest cleric of Sarenrae with a large interest in medicine and healing. She firmly believes in the greater good, redeeming people when possible and helping those in need. Especially the wounded and sick.
At the same time she is ready to stike down those who would harm others, the undead and other evils, trained well with her scimitar.
Her grandparents came to Absalom from Osirion and her family ever since stayed there. She herself is in Otari because of the local temple, where she hoped to study and train.

I think i can fulfill your points 1-3, got quite some experience in PbP and keeping it alive, also already some experience with PF2 at lower levels at least, because i am running 3 VTT campaigns for it.

Pathfinder Rulebook Subscriber

Haven't play a PbP in years, but I'm interested in getting back into it.

My character Idea:
Asubar is an Half-orc Rogue. A mercenary by trade, Asubar prefers jobs that use his brute strength or his intimidating presence, but he doesn't shy from using more tricky skills as long as it means completing the contract. He is a child of the streets, living in Absalom most of his life. More comfortable in a urban setting, but his work has led him to various places across the Isle of Kortos.

Reya, a friendly Fire Sorcerer, would like to join in the adventure. She's an apothecary trained under her grandmother since she was young and is in Otari looking for an herb known to grow in the area.

Massimo (Modulok) gravedigging barbarian brute

Ranged Types
Maxillar (Mioki) disillusioned Taldan archer
Charyx (CaptainFord) a kobold ranger who is on a quest to do good

Arcane Types
Daxur (Spazmodeus) goblin wizard with an attitude
Zinari Diamonds (Mitch) catfolk witch gambler
Reya (Junelee) friendly fire sorceress looking for some "herb"

Divine Types
Carote (panegyric), a confused catfolk oracle of the cosmos. +1 for alliteration
Amunet-Ra (Hayato-Ken) warpriest cleric of Sarenrae, hero of all things good

Other
Staryth (Ridge) elven criminal on the move
Asubar (Bpa144) 1/2 orc, all rogue

Alright, I'm gonna pick a party from the above people. I have a meeting from 9-1030 central so expect to see something around noon central.

Ok, I picked a party.

I tried to make a balanced party, with some long timers and some newcomers.

Melee Types
Unnamed Human Mwangi (bbilal) champion of Gozreh, former pirate who works to save souls. Is Gozreh into that kinda thing, sure I guess.
Reknar (Albion) is a no-nonsense ex-army sergeant, party leader type

Ranged Types
Charyx (CaptainFord) a kobold ranger who is on a quest to do good

Arcane Types

Divine Types
Amunet-Ra (Hayato-Ken) warpriest cleric of Sarenrae, hero of all things good

Other
Staryth (Ridge) elven criminal on the move

Making a gameplay and discussion thread for us. Players, hit up the discussion thread.

To everyone who expressed interest, thank you. I mean it. I've missed gaming on these boards and I'm happy people were willing to take me up on it. Appreciate you, and happy gaming.

Have fun with the game everyone.

Hopefully, I can stay on stand-by if a fill-in is needed.

Oh. Absolutely. If there's need for a fill in I come here first.
