Neighbors wave across an empty street
We long to touch but cannot meet
An invisible enemy forces our retreat
The selfish man posts another tweet
It seems we’re following Italy’s pattern
And that damned curve refuses the flatten
Los Angeles follows Seattle and Manhattan
Do our leaders truly not see this happen?
Stock market gains (but mostly losses)
Relief packages fatten corporate bosses
Rumors fly; you know their cause is
Misinformation from the Oval Office
Who gives a f--- about sanitizer and TP?
I’m worried more about masks and PPE
Doctors reliant on crafter industry --
Volunteers who sew and print 3-D.
And on the front lines, science is at war
There is a battle for the truth as never before
But lies can’t hide as the death toll soars.
At least food’s come back to the grocery store.
And yet, despite all this, I still have hope
Saving lives with distance (and lots of soap)
In our pajamas and our bathrobes
We’re finding so many ways to cope:
News and never-ending Netflix streams
Angst, black humor, and dog-filled memes.
Cancelled cruises and cancelled schemes,
But never my loves, cancelled dreams.
No. Never cancelled dreams.
-- Hilary Moon Murphy

We all cope in different ways. Mine is usually in filks, but I can't manage full light-heartedness now.

Hey,manhattan is pretty empty! For manhattan that is.
Second job is work from home for full time staff, but we need people to look at the actual computers so someone has to go in. Reduced hours have altered everything. Some parts are a ghost town.
I would check it out, but that would defeat the point. So in my house in the suburbs I shall stay.

Ya know...in the past I've offered the advice that the only logical, rational, and reasonable solution to all of life's problems is arson (this is where Zelda shoots me with a water gun and Aiymi just lets her do it).
What I've heard...and if this is incorrect info PLEASE correct me...is that the temp needed to kill this thing is about 140°F (60°C).
Most arsons are a factor of 8-10 over that, so...clearly the only sane thing to do is set everything on fire.
In all seriousness - they still found traces of COVID-19 on the Diamond Princess 17 days after the disinfection processes. Fire is sounding marginally less insane to me.

I imagine near absolute zero temps also kills this coronavirus.
So.
I'll be a Rule 63ed Captain Cold, and Vany can be Heatwave.

Cases are going to spike in the next few weeks. We're at the beginning, not the end.
A friend of mine is a MICU nurse. We're in an area that isn't even hardest hit, but she is having to wear the same mask all day... even if it's covered in sputum or blood from a patient she's working with, she isn't allowed to remove it or change it. She said: "Don't go to the hospital unless you're already dying, or we might just kill you faster."
This said, the concern about how long it lasts on surfaces needs to be borne in mind, but also not panicked about. Say, if they find traces on cardboard 24 hours later, it's still very small traces and the chances of transmission are extremely low. You should still be careful, but it's not like a box arriving in the mail is covered in germs and going to kill you instantly.
And wash your hands!!!

Yeah, that's my understanding too. Those concerns are really for things like a clean room environment. If you need the room sterile, then you worry about traces left on surfaces after days.
As far as stopping the spread of the disease goes - it's overwhelmingly being in the close presence of someone who's infected, breathing in droplets they're exhaling or coughing out. Then it's touching surfaces those droplets have recently landed on and then touching your face (mouth, nose, eyes). So wash your hands and regularly clean surfaces you have to touch in public spaces - work desks, keyboards, door knobs, railings etc.
That's why the social isolation is the key - for those who can. Cutting that direct contact transmission drastically drops the transmission rate. Proper handwashing drops it another big step. Everything else is secondary at best.

You've always struck me more as a Michael Ansara Mr. Freeze than Captain Cold. And I don't think Ice's or Killer Frost's costumes are your style.

PSA Time!
Try to stay healthy, safe, and somewhat sane out there.
Be Very Glad you have the option of working from home if you do.
Please, for everyone, have mercy on your poor overworked/underpaid/underprotected sales clerks/cashiers/whatnot at the grocery stores you ABSOLUTELY MUST go to.
Call first to find out if they have essential supplies in stock or not.
Protect yourselves, protect THEM.
All it takes is one stockperson to go down with Corona and the store will close given the current situation.
Don't be selfish.

Well, I didn't want to break Paizo's rules, sorry. Probably by now the offending post was reported and removed. You can find better porn on the Internet elsewhere anyway.

An old high school buddy of mine, who's an RN, signed a contract to go up to New York and work this virus thing. From what I heard, he'll be making some serious cash (something like 5 grand a week, plus chances at OT), along with having his hotel and some other expenses paid.
Oddly enough, I'd heard a week or so ago that he passed on a chance to go back to the Seattle area and work their. Can't say I blame him. New York probably pays better.
