So I'm one of those guys that always has ideas for characters. And I'll never play them all, so I thought I'd share the love and give people some ideas. So if you've ever wanted to play a pop culture character in Starfinder, here is my list of 20 of them you can play. Just ideas mind you, feel free to add your own!

20: Joel Robinson (Or Mike Nelson, or Jonah Heston): Mystery Science Theater 3000. Male human Drone mechanic with either Crow or Servo as your drone. Ranks in profession: Movie Riffer.
19: Johnny 5: Short Circut Male (agendered?) SRO Exocortex mechanic (seeing as he can hack anything he can see) If he's in the first movie, make sure to get that shoulder-mounted laser weapon!
18: Sgt. Calhoun Wreck It Ralph Female human Mercenary Soldier (Hit-and-Run or Bombard.) She's definatly ranged focused but has heavy armor and favors fully automatic assault rifles, but has a backup small arm. Even has a hoverboard you can duplicate with hoverskates!
17: John Wick: John Wick M Human Operative: Who's super good with gunplay? Also you can grab the Pistol Whip operative talent if not in SFS to be awesome in hand-to-hand martial arts as well, Can also sub in John Preston from Equilibrium or Bryan Mills from Taken.
16: Zapp Branigan Futurama M Human Envoy. I mean, he's boardering on NE what with how horrible a person he is, but he would be fun to play . . .
15: Starbuck Battlestar Gallactica M or F (depending on the version) Human Soldier (Ace Pilot). I mean, how much more ace pilot can you get?
14: Ruby Fifth Element M Human Envoy (Icon) I mean, who WOULDN'T want to play this guy?
13: The Android A.K.A. Kiva Ehrens Dark Matter F Android Exocortex mechanic. Pretty straightforward build. Need to take ranks in medicine?
12: Orin StarChaser M Human Solarian (Colonist? Cultist?) Dude can make a magic sword appear out of nowhere, and he's pretty and dumb as a box of rocks. Sounds like a solarian to me!
11: The Doctor Star Trek Voyager M Android? Envoy. I know what you are thinking, but there is no 'sentient hologram' PC option so Android is the best we got. And Envoys can make really damn good doctors, because they can get their envoy skill bonus to it, plus the bedside manner envoy talent can net them bonus healing.
10: Ayeka Tenshi Muyo series F human-ish mystic (Priest background) Honestly, anyone from Tenshi could be a starfinder character. Tenshi is a solarian, Washu is a technomancer. Honestly go nuts.
9:Aisha Clanclan Outlaw Star F Phatra Vanguard. Honestly while it would be hard to duplicate the ridiculous feats of physical strength and durability that Aisha displays, a vanguard would be a good middle ground between the anime and game balance I think.
8: Lucca Chrono Trigger F Human Technomancer (roboticist). Honestly, the entire cast of Chrono Trigger would also work well as Starfinder characters. Chrono the Soldier, Nadia and frog mystics. Robo could be an SRO fighter or mechanic.
7: Sajin Komamura Bleach M Vlaka Solarian. Before Bleach decended into unwatchableness, there were some solidly cool characters, including this fox dude who was also a master swordsman. Most people forget about him, sadly.
6: Doomguy/Flynn Taggart Doom M Human (or planar scion?) Soldier (marine.) Who better to call on in your sci-fi story that has been invaded by demons?
5: Groot Guardians of the Galaxy M(???) Oakling Ghoran Mystic. I am groot, I am groot, I am groot.
4: Bepo One Piece Male Uplifted Bear (Space Pirate). Giant uplifted bear medic? Yeah, we can do that.
3: Whis Dragonball Super M Planar Scion (aasimar) Mystic. Okay, so you can't make him as powerful as a god, but I think he'd be tickled pink that you were playing him at all.
2: Agent 47 Hitman series M human operative. I mean . . . it's just too obvious.
1: Cat Red Dwarf M Phatra Envoy (Ace Pilot) there are two things you need to be good at for this roll, piloting and dressing sharp!

To be honest, the entire cast of Guardians of the Galaxy could be played, or at least approximated, using existing stats, such as...

Rocket: A Ysoki bounty hunter soldier focusing on the bombard style and using heavy weapons
Gamorra: Android cyberborn operative (or soldier)
Peter Quill: Human (maybe Planar Scion) Outlaw Envoy
Drax: Half-Orc (close enough in terms of stats at least) Gladiator Soldier
Mantis: Damaya Lashunta Spacefarer Mystic

Then, you could move on to other various space-operas like Saga, Star Wars, Cowboy Bebop, Voltron, etc. Let's take Volton just for fun:

Keith: Simulate his lineage by making him a Half-Elf Mercenary Operative
Lance: Human Icon(?) Soldier (focus on sniper weapons)
Hunk: Human Roboticist Soldier (focus on heavy weapons)
Pidge: Human Scholar Mechanic (with maybe a hover drone to simulate that little robot she had in season one)
Allura: Endiffian Xenoseeker Technomancer (or maybe Witchwarper?)
Shiro: This one was tough. He's definitely human, but then he's either a Gladiator or a Cyberborn, and while his original robot arm had a lot of Solarian-like capabilities, I think I have to go with soldier instead.

We could do the villains too:
Zarkon: Hobgoblin (in stats) Death-Touched Soldier (Armor Storm specialization)
Haggar: Endiffian Death-Touched Witchwarper
Lotor: Half-Drow (in stats) Scholar Envoy (Star Knight)

It's pretty easy to make Darth Vader with Starfinder: He could be a Death-Touched Human or even a Borais, and he'd be perfect as a Mindbreaker Mystic, maybe with the Star Knight archetype and a plasma sword. There's a 3rd level spell on the Mystic list called psychokinetic strangulation that is basically Darth Vader's signature move translated into a spell. You could also use the Phrenic Adept archetype on a Soldier for a similar effect to get the spell in question.

There's a Solarian power that is literally Vader's choke move. Crush, I think? Solarian makes more sense anyway, since it comes with powerful combat ability and its own crystal-enhanced energy sword.

I've mostly poked around at various ideas since release, but lately I've started brainstorming characters from Borderlands 2 as a means to familiarize with classes.

Mr. Torgue - Soldier with Icon theme, lashunta for the Charisma and Strength boost with Wisdom penalty. Shock and Awe for the primary fighting style, Bombard for secondary. EXPLOOOOOSIONS! The Synaptic Accelerator will "boost" his Charisma by incorporating an automated vulgarity censor.

Zer0 - Android Operative with Ghost specialization. The only sticky part I'm running into is a katana-like sword being usable with trick attack.

I haven't worked out builds for the following yet:

Maya - Solarian. Seems like it could work with either armor or weapon. Lashunta seems ideal.

Axton - Soldier and/or Mechanic with a combat drone.

Krieg and Salvador - Not sure here. I don't know of any "rage" sort of class abilities available.

Gaige - Mechanic with combat drone.

Tina - Bombard soldier.

Going through some MST3K episodes:

Jack Ryder a.k.a. Blast Hardcheese A.K.A. Big McLargeHuge:Space Mutany Human Male Ace Pilot Soldier (bombard? Hit-and-Run?)

Wally/Prince of Space :Prince of Space Male . . . Lashunta Operative? (he is a very human-like alien) spy specialization. Theme could be ace pilot or space pirate or something else.

Vadinho Pumaman Male Human Priest Vanguard. Or possibly cultist?

Ivan Jack Frost Male Human (Or Uplifted Bear!) Colonist Vanguard. Strength Vanguard. Probably has ranks in Profession-Farmer.

Simon Wizards of the Lost Kingdom Male Halfling Colonist Witchwarper. Halfling 'cuse he's a kid. Or you could make him a young human I guess . . .

How about some Buck Rodgers?

Buck -- Human spacefarer soldier.
Wilma Deering -- Human priest soldier. She's the closest to a paladin.
Doctor Huer -- Human technomancer. Unsure of the theme.
Princess Ardalla -- Human icon envoy.

Actually, building on this: Flash Gordon!

Flash Gordon is the hero of a space opera adventure comic strip created by and originally drawn by Alex Raymond. First published January 7, 1934, the strip was inspired by, and created to compete with the already established Buck Rogers adventure strip.

Steve "Flash" Gordon - Human Male, Soldier, Ace Pilot (Ace Pilot is the best option from the various available interpretations.)
Dale Arden - Human Female, Operative, Icon: reporter (Dale is difficult because of the changing role of women during the various eras, she goes from almost useless (1934 strips) to being nearly Flash's equal (2014 Dynamite Comics).)
Dr. Hans Zarkov - Human Male, Mechanic (exocortex), Scholar (This one should be obvious)[/list]

They quickly pick up:
Prince Thun - "Lion Man" Male, Soldier, Wild Warden (Use Pahtra (Alien Archive 2, p. 94), but change the stat modifiers to +2 Str, +2 Wis, -2 Int)
Prince Baron - Human (Mongan*) Male, Operative, Wild Warden (A former adversary, Baron joins Flash's cause in the Hawkmen city.)
Prince Voltan - "Hawkman" Male, Soldier, Mercenary (Use Strix (Pact Worlds, p. 214), pretty much as written. Another former adversary, who joins Flash and Baron when Ming attacks his city.)

On the other side, there is:
Emperor Ming, the Merciless - Human (Mongan*) Male, Technomancer, NPC with a CR = to APL + 2 (Ming is a scientist who is -almost- the equal of Dr. Zarkov - but is duties as Emperor and his other pleasures, keep him from devoting himself fully. Later in the series he is also shown to have some magic abilities.)
Princess Aura - Human (Mongan) Female, Operative, Icon (She should be created as a PC, because about half-way through the series she switches sides when she realizes her feelings for Prince Baron.)

*- Mongans are almost indistinguishable from Earthlings. One good compromise is to use the stats for Half-Elves.

I love the movie also (Flash Gordon - Human Male, Soldier, Icon: Althlete). But, I was going with the broadest interpretation based on the 80 year history of the character. ;)

Or was it Roll Fizzlebeef? Or Buff Drinklots? Or Bolt Vanderhuge?

How about Captain Harlock?

Captain Harlock --- Human outlaw envoy.
Tochirō Ōyama --- This one is tough to pin down since he built the Arcadia, but got sick. His consciousness lives on in the Arcadia's main computer system. Android(???) Scholar Engineer maybe.
Emeraldas --- Human Ace Pilot Operative.
Mayu Ōyama --- Daughter of Emeraldas and Tochiro. She's too young to have a class, envoy maybe.
Miime/Mime/Mimay/Melody --- She's got blue skin. Astrozoan(???) icon Envoy. Oh, I don't have time to actually write up her species.
Professor Tsuyoshi Daiba[b] --- Human scholar Biohacker.
[b]Mitsuru Kiruda
--- The leader of Earth's Defense forces. He's the sworn enemy of Captain Harlock (obviously the protagonist). Human priest soldier.
Kei Yuki --- Human mercenary soldier.

Rather then just listing some interesting Sci-Fi characters, let's try a different approach …

Malcom Reynolds
Mal was born on September 20, 2468, and was brought up on a ranch on the planet Shadow. Raised by his mother and "about 40 hands," Mal apparently received a fairly decent education growing up. Though Mal usually seems more practical than intellectual, he occasionally surprised his friends by displaying familiarity with a wide range of literature varying from the works of Shan Yu, a psychotic dictator, to poems by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. He, however, has no idea "who" Mona Lisa was.

Mal volunteered for the Independents army during the Unification War against the Alliance, gaining the rank of sergeant during that time. His second-in-command Zoë Alleyne Washburne was by his side for most of the war, surviving many dangerous conflicts with him, such as the Battle of Du-Khang in 2510 and a long winter campaign in New Kasmir where he commanded a platoon. Mal was also involved in the ground campaign during the Battle of Sturges, which according to Badger was the "bloodiest and shortest battle in all the war", although Mal considered it a distant second. Mal fought in many more battles, but the turning point for him and the Independents came with their physical and emotional defeat at the Battle of Serenity Valley on the planet Hera. (The Message, War Stories, Serenity: Those Left Behind)

After the war, Mal acquired his own ship, an old, broken and not flight-worthy 03-K64 Firefly-class transport whose previous owner was a man named Captain Harbatkin (and he never got around to changing the registration papers). He promptly named the ship Serenity. On board Serenity and during his various travels, Mal continued to wear his brown coat and wielded a standard issue officer's pistol, a Liberty Hammer, as his weapon of choice, a gun which he has had since the war and had modified extensively.

Just had a thought (but I don't have an answer yet): How to build Protoss Zealots and Dark Templar -- and have them be appropriately different from each other.

Some StarCraft stuff could already be built reasonably easily -- Marines are Soldiers; Ghosts are Ghost Operatives. Marauders and Firebats are probably some kind of relatively high-level Soldiers with specialized weapons.

I’m guessing a zealot wolould be a Solarian with the phrenic adept archetype. Not sure of the species. . . Kasatha make sense of the look and culture except for the four arms. Lashunta make sense stat-wise.

Firebats are just bombard soldiers. Level 5-strength to damage with blast weapons and the brutal blast gear boost.

I still need to figure out how to do Dark Templar (and they're not just variant Zealots).

Hellboy: Tiefling Vanguard with a handcannon and a lot of attitude.

Second Seekers (Luwazi Elsebo)

The characters from Coheed and Cambria's new album are my favorite pop culture Starfinder characters right now.

Nostrand (aka Creature): Human Outlaw Envoy
Longarm proficiency, higher Dex than Cha, expertise in intimidate and disguise. Under no circumstances is he allowed to take any improv that prevents surprise mechanically or thematically.

Nia (aka Sister Spider/Glass Widow): Human Icon Operative (add a little technomancer when she becomes Glass Widow)
Daredevil specialization, ranks in engineering and computers (add sciences when GW), profession (administrator)

Otto (aka Colossus): Half-orc Mercenary Soldier
Bombard style, profession (gambler)

Other characters:
The Warden is totally Azlanti.
The Windows are akashic mystics.
My head canon for Vaxis is that he'll grow up to be a Star Shaman.

Reincarnate is on the Witchwarper spell list.

To me, the obvious choice for Dark Templars would be the Solarian class focused on graviton abilities, in particular the stealth and ninja movement focused ones. In contrast, zeolots would be solarians focused on positron abilities.

A good plot point could be a protoss that chooses to combines both teachings of the Kalaih and Dark Templar to banlance out both positron and gravitron abilities and come out stronger for it, Artanis style.

^Artanis is in on that, but Tassadar was first at it.

I've done this in another thread, but here is my rough approximation of Protoss in Starfinder. Remember: I'm trying to keep them balanced with other races.

Protoss
Protoss are a sentient humanoid species native to a planet in the vast named Aiur. They have four or five fingered hands and digitigrade legs.
They are very technologically advanced and masters of bioengineering. Protoss look somewhat similar to Kasatha, standing roughly the same height and with sweeping crania, though they only have two arms.

Protoss are Medium Humanoids with the Protoss subtype

Ability Modifiers +2 Str, -2 Dex, +2 Wisdom: Protoss are stronger and (some would argue) much wiser than humans, but their large frames, while great for running, make fine motor control problematic.
Hit Points 4

Swift Runner Protoss's powerful legs provide them with a base land speed of 35 feet.

Talons: Protoss are always considered armed. They can deal 1d3 lethal damage with unarmed strikes and the attack doesn’t count as archaic. Protoss gain a unique weapon specialization with their natural weapons at 3rd level, allowing them to add 1–1/2 × their character level to their damage rolls for their natural weapons (instead of just adding their character level, as usual).

Sunlight Absorption Protoss do not need to eat to survive, but instead derive energy from sunlight much like the photosynthisis of plants from Golarian. They do need to absorb nutrients and water through their skin, though they do not require nearly as much nutrients as other species. Rations last twice as long for Protoss, though they must specifically buy rations designed for their species.

Psionic All protoss have psionic abilities from birth. They have no mouths (and cannot speak) but gain a limited form of telepathy. Protoss can mentally communicate with any creatures within 30 feet with whom they share a language. Conversing telepathically with multiple creatures simultaneously is just as difficult as listening to multiple people speaking. A protoss can telepathically communicate with another protoss over a distance of 60 feet.

My life for Aiur!Protoss have a very advanced civilization that revolves around merging technology with their psychic abilities. They receive a +2 bonus to mysticism checks. Choose either engineering, life sciences, or physical sciences, they also receive a +2 bonus to the chosen skill.

I could see the Brig in Starfinder "Sgt Benson Grey chap with bulging eyes 20mm DF Grenade Launcher 5 rounds rapid"

The Paternoster gang would be another though part of me wants a propper Sontaran and Sluirian race.

‘Suggest we melt his brain using projectile acid fish, and then interrogate him. [PAUSE] Other way round.’

Torchwood would be another good crossover - I did think doing a SOR in the style of Crichton (red dwarf) as a team mom - though in the end I went for a cross between Avon And Villa - starship role lancer/snarkier I chief.
