War for the Crown

Recruitment

Sovereign Court

One of our players had to drop during character creation, and we are now looking for a replacement. Actual gameplay won't start until at least May, so you have not missed anything yet. This game will have slightly different expectations than the norm, though. In addition to the usual one in character post per weekday and weekend, there will be a lot of activity in the discussion thread.

Part of our purpose in this campaign is to challenge each other and become better players/GMs. We will actively be practicing and revising posts, doing role-playing exercises, offering each other feedback, etc. So in addition to a desire to play War for the Crown, applicants should also be interested in an intense workshop experience.

Also, we are looking for a fifth player, NOT a character. Character creation will occur after you are invited to the group. In order to apply, please link to specific posts made by characters of yours, that you feel offer good examples of your role-playing. For example:

Recruitment will tentatively stay open for two days, and then probably take another day or two for our group to discuss the candidates.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

That sounds terrific, Granta! Color me interested.

I GM more than I play (and I've been doing both for a long time), but here are some specific posts for you, both as GM and as player.

As GM

My game of The One Ring.

My Kingmaker game.

My "Traveller: The New Era" game.

My Ptolus game.

As Player

Berosius, my PFS life Oracle.

Khardan, my warpriest of Arqueros (Carrion Crown)

Cynehelm, my Sorcerer/Priest of Sarenrae (Reign of Winter)

Aldarion the Bold, my nascent PFS transmuter

Moyasmedsev, my droyne "lawyer" in a Traveller game.

I'm definitely interested. Disclaimer: I'm running War for the Crown F2F for a local group near my house, so knowing how cool this AP is, I'm drooling to play this as a player.

GM Example

Player Example

I'm usually able to post several times daily.

I’ve skimmed the first adventure for when I go to run it, but would love a chance to see it on the player side first.

GM Example: Zero Combat Run

Player Example: Dhampir Creepiness

Player Example: Cold Sniper

Player Example: Hot Blooded

Player Example: For Science!

Hello there GM Granta!

HERE with John is a nice set of examples all down the page of RP and Interaction. That is pretty much what I will bring to the table out of combat.

And HERE on Daniel is how I handled a complicated combat post. I am always looking for slight ways to improve posts as well, so I might be even better by May! :D

Sovereign Court

To clarify: I am looking for examples of multiple characters. Seeing you play 2-3 personalities differently is how I like to gauge role-playing potential. I once played with an absolutely hilarious, hippie gnome in a F2F game. Everybody at the table just loved the character and thought the player was a fantastic role-player.

Then a year later we saw him use the same personality--and some of the exact same phrases and body language--for a human fighter whose life was ruled by a debt of honor incurred by his grandfather. So . . . please give at least two examples of characters with different personalities.

And examples of your GMing are not necessary. But if you want to include them for any reason, they certainly won't hurt.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

I'm certainly having fun reading other's posts. Neat!

Is just nice to have a collected example post. :)

Silver Crusade

hmm. I seem to have forgotten how to link to a specific post... how does one go about doing that again?

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

Use the url tag from the "how to format" below. TO select the post you want, right click on the date/time stamp of the post.

GM Granta: I'm already GMing this F2F so if there's only ONE spot available, I'll bow out to the others. Enjoy everyone: it's a blast! :)

That really sound great! I can identify with the goals of this campaign and would very much like to participate.

Here are two links for campaigns that I am GMing and have progressed far enough so you can get an impression (I justed started GMing PbP two weeks ago).

Delirium's Tangle

The lion's library

Here you find some games where I participate as a player, Setare Katsu and Kioshi Katsu who are siblings are the characters (I just started PbP as a player during the outpost con):

Setare Katsu

Kioshi Katsu

I hope to be able to join your campaign.

Have a great sunday!

Here you go. Three player post examples.

Kit the Puppeteer

Belle in her tent

Deluge the reluctant pathfinder

Bauble the would be goblin

Hello! I’ve wanted to get into a longer duration game for a bit, and since I’ve only been doing PBP for a year or two, I’m definitely up for getting better at the form.

Here are five examples of play with different characters:

Scarab Sages

I'm really excited about the idea behind this campaign! I'm itching to play War for the Crown, and the workshop concept is really great.

Here are some character examples from other campaigns. I've tagged a specific post, but I suppose it goes without saying that the surrounding posts provide context.

Rojava: Ro Gives Advice

Zhalet: A Qadiran Were-Leopard in Kelmarane

Vigny: Vigny Storms a Castle

Emileva: Emi Argues With the Party (Again)

Clover: Battle Triage

Curious, I saw this last night, but wanted to think about it before I dotted.

This is under a spoiler only to keep from cluttering up your page.

Confessions:
I must confess, I am curious. Let me say right up front that I am not a GM and haven’t GM’d since a very poor outing of ‘traveler’ back in 83. So, if being a GM is a requirement I’m not your guy.

I play for the experience of the story in the game itself, and the development of the characters. The workshop aspect sounds intriguing, because I like artistic feedback and discussion. But I am more interested in the experience of playing the game with committed posters, than the ‘workshop aspect’ itself. Don’t get me wrong, I write a little and enjoy telling a good story. I have done advanced art classes where the main focus is ‘critique’; so I am not afraid of criticism or speaking my mind and I love discussion. Sometimes my unasked-for opinion has gotten me in trouble.

Let me give you a little more information about my gaming style and a demonstration of my willingness to discuss characters. I shared the below quote as part of a discussion in a game I just started in, with Ala’Ihys. This is the second use of this character. His original story is here.

Ala’Ihys wrote:

Some characters I build are very specific archetypes that I have a desire to play, then I wait for a game and tweak the backstory or minor skills to fit the game. Some Characters I build, are based on the need of the game giving a backstory that fits the race, skills, traits, and feats that I’ve deemed needed. A pet peeve of mine is character building that uses opposite race, traits, feats, and classes that match no possible background for their mathematical benefit. (I will resist the urge to give examples that I have seen.)

No matter which type of character I’m building, they are an amalgamation based on personalities and character concepts or archetypes from stories that I am fond of. For example this version of Ala’Ihys draws inspiration from Ardeth Bay, “Rackhir, the Red Archer” of Michael Moorcock ‘Eternal Champion’ series (specifically Elric of Melnibone) and ‘Dogman’ from Joe Abercrombie’s ‘First Law Trilogy.’ Of course with a pinch of Robert E Howard and pulp fiction stories thrown in. The backstory was stolen from ’Sallow’ in “Blood of Hero’s”.

I intentionally start most of my characters young, so they can participate in ‘the hero’s journey’ playing the game. However, the character is still two-dimensional, they become three dimensional in the game, as they interact with other characters. I try to not have similar characters in similar games because that becomes very boring…

Something else I should disclose before you select me. I will add that I tend to play melee and skill characters. I’ve no desire to play most casters, so I have only created a couple. I tell people it’s because I read too much Robert E. Howard as a youth. The other reason is a desire to play simpler class designs so I can focus on the character. For quite a while now I attempt to give my characters a personality type based on stats and alignment, and then try and remain loyal to that within the game.

Well, If I haven’t scared you off yet, I hope you enjoy my ‘in game’ Posts.

Usawoti, an aboriginal warrior
Ting Tang, an opportunistic cad
Sariel, a modern vampire hunter
Brunner Hammerfell, a proud paladin This character was an experimentation with a Translator
Einar 'Kinslayer' Bjornson Nuff said
Gnasher, Gnoll bloodrager
Elek Kardforgató in a now defunct game, I have recycled the character, as so often happens.

With seven I should probably end here. Thanks GM Granta's for the opportunity to play and the ‘trip down memory lane’, good luck all.

This sounds delightful. My favorite thing about pbp is that I consistently get to write themed short stories.

Roland Variel, a half-elf spellslinger

Backstory for Malachi Ekdikésis, a monkadin

Vince, post 1 and post 2.

I'm also gming a game here

Resists urge to apply.....

THIS for Kaya should be a 3rd variance of my RP. The first two were in the post directly above the one I quoted.

Okay! I've been lurking to join a War for the Crown thread, and this looks like one that'll have some serious dedication!

Here is a post from Maja Weatherseed, a Lawful Good Separatist Cleric of Erastil in a Kingmaker game. She is a Separatist because even though she's a traditional country girl, she believes that women should be viewed as equals to men (and wants to start a new kingdom that will reflect such a view). Unfortunately, finding one of her companions entering a lesbian relationship may be a bridge too far.

Here is a post from Muziel Moreau, a Chaotic Evil Gnome Kineticist who had a past experimenting on lost halflings for personal gain. He's evil, sure, but has a bit of gnomish prankster in him. The party has captured a poor barmaid complicit in rebelling against the Crown and he decides to play a little trick on her.

Here is a post from Kirzon, a Lawful Neutral Dwarf Druid who went from chopping down trees to becoming their defenders after an encounter with the Great Tree Spirit. He has just encountered a companion's new Giant Wasp familiar and is a little perturbed. Fortunately, the Great Tree Spirit is there to give him guidance from time to time, as here. I admit Kirzon doesn't have the best Scottish accent in existence, but can I get some brownie points for trying?

Note: I tend to reuse aliases, so unfortunately I don't have the backgrounds of many of these characters up any longer.

Second Seekers (Roheas)

Sure thing I can share some of my prior work.

Here is my Druid Thornberry:
Introducing him/herself at a gala

Trying to puzzle together some strange evidence.

Here is my brutal hunter, starfinder character He-Who-Grinds-Blades-to-dust:

A fine introduction with Grinds' BELOVED faction head.

Relishing his time in the arena

Kato Koisumi, the arrogant, cowardly rogue

Fighting is tough (this whole combat is pretty good work out of me)

Geico All Hearth, Insurance Inquisitor of Abadar

A clear presentation on the consequences of not cooperating

Will Save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

Turning towards the glorious image of Granta, his eyes fog over. With a subtle nod, RePete plods towards the table and makes his mark. "Yes, sir."

I was going to watch from afar since you only have 1 spot to hand out...but I can't resist an opportunity to join you here.

(Link) Inam has been one of my favorite characters for the last year or so. I feel she has a lot of depth to offer a perspective reader.

Inam is a Sylph Paladin. The clip above has her responding to a potential riot due to some things turning the citizens against the religious group. She is built from pathfinder rules with some homebrew aspects.

(Link) Iskar and Zaas introducing themselves to a group. He's an old school summoner that may not quite respect the gods.

(Link) Dr Nibbles Whiskerson vaccinating an enemy to question him. He is a doctor in the sense of medical experimentation...not necessarily wanting to save lives other than his own.

(Link) Edgar recently had a group of over exuberant companions fell an opponent too early. He managed to get the crowd "involved" in healing the beast, so they could kill it at the right time.

(Link) Posh Nanjet was a lot of fun. The alias was recycled when the campaign collapsed. But in this post, the 'Prankster Bard' at the time was trying to deal with the bloodbath he encountered in his first ever combat. Coming from a life of innocence, the days events took a toll on him.

I wish you luck in your decision GM Granta. Never easy finding the right fit and I hope, if nothing else, you enjoy reading the entries. Thank you for your time! :-)

I wasn't aware of this AP but I looked it up and it sounds awesome. I'm actually running a home brew that I think is a similar concept set in Cheliax, where a group is tasked with overthrowing the rule of House Thrune and the other major Houses. Most of my PBP experience is with GMing, so two GM posts below and one character post.

Post Example 1: This is the introduction to a quest I ran online. The quest is actual a re-telling of the first Pathfinder quest I played, and the characters involved are all the originally played characters (including Dante in post two).

Post Example 1: Intro to the Merc Guild

Post Example 2: The ship is in a new location that no one can recognize. The Captain and most of the crew are dead. The first mate is in hysterics. Everyone has lost their hearing. Dristen takes the command.

Post Example 2: Dristen takes command

Post Example 3: another GM post. The party has woken up with no recent memories, and has only one link to their past lives. That link is then hanged for treason.

Post Example 3: The Ringleader Dies

Ok to say I really want to be a part of this, is an understatement: Here's some post of three of my favorite characters (+ a bonus Oloch):

Eamon

Makon

Newmark

Oloch

This is one adventure path that I would absolutely love to play!

Kronas & Luna: Gathering information about a festival.
Lord Braggett Fizzlebotham the Fourth: Providing a distraction for his comrades.
Raia: Flustered in her first space battle (after a bad skill roll.)
Tupp: Distractedly sneaking into the enemy's hideout.
Eadric: Excited for a new mission.

Liberty's Edge

The player/GM building exercise in this sparks my curiosity. I've been away from PBP for some time and the itch seems to be returning, so let's throw in a hat and see who picks it up.

Gellwyn This was a character created for an unusual set of creation guidelines. A somewhat dark barkstory emerged as I wrote; sadly she was not selected.

Seori A modified Jade Regent campaign that had a surprise twist; the GM called this a very strong character and the rest of the party synergized very well in flavor and mechanics. The plot and personalities developed well...while it lasted. I had fun playing the well-mannered samurai.

Maven Now this one I'm still heartbroken over. The recruitment alone was more fun than most campaigns I've played, and it was filled with wonderful characters and run by the Illustrious Robert Brookes...who, tragically, had to put the campaign on indefinite hiatus. I actually loved playing the flaws in this character and was aching to see where the game took us.

Maxis This one was originally a 4d6-drop-the-lowest character...with three scores of 6 and lower. And I KEPT IT. Another short-lived campaign, I'm afraid...but a character I dearly wanted to play more of.

Isabella This one started off as more of a mechanical idea, but started to grow into a personality as I wrote and played. Had lots of failed rolls due to where my numbers fell versus what the GM called for (damn you, profession: sailor!) but I still wanted to see where it went.

You'll find a range of post length, paragraph content, etc. because I try my best to adapt to the pace, style and post length of the campaign. If we're fast and shortspoken, then let the posts and dice rolls fly. If we do short novellas, then expect some scrolling and spoiler tags; I've been known to be flexible. I've only GM'ed a homebrew PBP briefly, but quickly realized I wasn't ready and neither was half my party. Perhaps I can learn enough here to try again...

Sovereign Court

Recruitment is now closed. The other players and I will discuss all of y'all behind your backs now, and hopefully have our victim selected in another two days.

Well, time to knock myself out for the next 48 hours.

Sovereign Court

The discussion is taking longer than expected, but I will update again as soon as we've reached a decision.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

Prospective Player breaks out his paddle ball to pass the time...

Prospective player grabs the paddle board and smacks Tarondor on the back of the head with it for posting what I though would be the decision post.

I guess I also have to smack myself on the head as well.

1 person marked this as a favorite.
Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

Nobody expects the Paddle Board!

hhhmmmm, it's been a few days, is there any questions we can answer to assist in your decisions?

If it helps any, I would really like to play the new ranger archetype Dandy. I've a hankering to play a dancing instructor, who wields a falcate and buckler...

Robert Henry wrote:

I have a tag along character in a Cheliax based house politics quest that I’m running that is a Dandy/Skirmisher. It fits perfectly in that setting socially, and doesn’t seem to have lost any combat prowess.

Sovereign Court

Unfortunately, the players and I were not able to find a candidate that we all felt excited to play with. Thank you to everybody for applying, and I'm sure we will see you in other games. Have fun!

Dang! I knew I should have offered cookies. Never mind, I hope y'all have fun!

Sovereign Court

Cookies wouldn't have helped. Nor cake. Cheesecake on the other hand . . .

I'll have to remember that for next time. :)

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

Sorry to hear that, Granta. Maybe another time!

Darn I missed it. :(
