Your travels are largely, blessedly, uneventful. You're waylaid by easily driven off bandits on one occasion, and attacked by wolves on another, but by and large, the road is welcoming enough. You manaage to shoot two deer, and dig up some bland, but nutrishious roots as you travel, and although the meals are bland, you don't dig into your prebought rations on the way.

Besides meeting patrol of knights riding south, keeping to road open, you travel in relative solitude. Their captain is interested in hearing of your bandit encounter, and tells you to keep heading east if you ever get lost. According to him, the beachhead is supposed to be safer than the rest of the wilderness. He also says that it's a good place to reprovision if food and water is tight.

On the sixth day, around high noon, you come across a crudely painted sign in broken common, pointing out a small, goat-trail-like path that leads into the green hills and, if you trust the sign, to entrance of the Dungeon of Graves. After some discussion and observation, you set out on the path, weapons at the ready.

Your alertness is unwarranted; the sky is blue, with birds singing and soaring overhead, and the hills themselves covered in lush greenery.

The party makes camp in the hills, and the night is silent, undisturbed by brigands or wolves. The next morning, you set off in bright spirits.

You can't be far from the coast now, and those of you who know these things are pretty sure you spot seagulls on the horizon.

After two hours or so, you start to feel like you're being watched - a distinctive prickling at the back of your necks suggest that someone, or something is watching you, waiting. The birds are unconcerned, however, happily continuing their songs, albeit the clouds draw in heavy overhead.

Just as the prickly feeling abates, you arrive at your destination. By the sun, it is early afternoon, on the seventh day of your journey.

From the book
You crest the last hill and finally the complex
comes into view. In stark contrast to the lush
greenery of the hills lies a large sunken graveyard
laid out in the shape of a cross. Rather than towering
above the ground, the graves have settled into
depressions, and the main mausoleum, a building of
strange green stone, rests in the deepest depression
some 40 feet below the ground on which you now
stand. At the other end of the grave-filled hallow
stands what appears to be a stone well. There are no
gravestones near it. The normal sounds of wildlife
are gone, and large carrion birds circle overhead.
An ominous silence rests about the place. Each of
you knows in your heart that you have found the
legendary dungeon of Rappan Athuk. And though
none dare speak it, you wonder if you will live to
return to the warmth of hearth and home.

The foot of the cross point due north, and it is from this direction that you arrive. Directly below you is a low, circular structure. In the center of the cross stands a statue, grander than the rest of the gravestones, and a stone mausoleum stands at each of the cross' hands, wrought from the same green stone as the main mausoleum at the head, far south.

The bottom of the depression is roughly 500ft. long, from the foot of the cross to the head, while the arms are 350ft. across.

You have come. Now remains only the descent.

Belle sets up her tent in her usual inefficient way, eventually settling herself with her legs dangling out the doorway of the apparently too small tent, the back third of it taken up with a makeshift desk and neatly organized papers and ink in stark contrast to the disheveled appearance of the tent. Her ioun stone skims brightly about the interior seeming somewhat like an oversized and lonely firefly as she works on her ART humming softly to herself.

Oh, dear. I do hope I brought enough of the brown ink. I'd like to capture the essence of the cemetery, though I don't see what the big deal is. It looks like most cemeteries to me except for the odd sinking thing going on. I do hope this does not turn out to be a disappointment after all that traveling. Sooo many rumors and stories. They can't all be wrong, can they?

Her thoughts continue in this fashion, obviously less concerned with the imminent danger presented by the tomb than with, what to most would be childish, dangers of running out of ink. Growing bored with trying to capture a sense of mystery where she sees none, she shouts out in elven with a Tian accent,

"Gareth, dear, I don't suppose you and your intriguing Kaloora might pose for me? The contrast between your bright hair and your friends shadowy form intrigue me."

During the long trip, Belle has often called upon Gareth to chase away the doldrums of the tedious trip. The shared language, fey background, and his obvious charms are always welcome. Though a more serious gnome would have been hard to find. Actually, the entire party was a welcome distraction, quite different from the obsessively rigid social structure of the Kitsune and elves she was used to living with. Tessai, though a capable conversationalist, seemed a bit odd to Belle and when he started talking about Iomadae, glory, and oaths could be quite tedious. A little Iomadae went a LONG way. And when he and Reynaud got into one of their famous arguments on Sarenrae vs. Iomadae she quickly found her way elsewhere. Reynaud's idea of a better argument was a louder argument. If they ever got back to civilization she was going to suggest they bring some sparing implements and use them to practice on each other. Then there was Magnus. Not a good conversationalist, arrogant, and always wanting to talk about their shared profession. To him, 'Arcanist' seemed to define him, but to Belle the ART was more important than the power and knowledge. Belle likes a little variety in her conversation, but to Magus talking about the difference between the uses of different somatic gestures WAS variety. Talk about T E D I O U S. Agyen, now there was a man that could THINK. And think. And THINK. Almost scarey, but always interesting. The memories he could pull out of that odd brain of his. It seemed like there wasn't ANYTHING he couldn't carry on a conversation about. Belle worried, though, that the frail man would crumple in the first battle. Thinking never stopped an orc, at least not in her experience, though Agyen always insisted that he could and that he would b just fine. Not a person overly concerned with dying that one.

Sorry about the long post but I thought it would serve as a nice way to introduce all the characters too. Hope I captured the personalities right from the bios.

The little elf was always so insistent on the silliest of time wasters. Did she expect to take time to draw and illustrate within Rappan Athuk?

Reynaud had long since learned not to speak unless he needed to (given his tendency to either aggravate or frighten people unintentionally), however, so he vocalized none of his issues with the way Belle spent her mornings.

After looking at the exterior for a moment, Reynaud spoke what may have been the longest sentence any of the others had heard from him.

Note said 'don't go down the well,' right? Check mausoleum first?

Nice intro Belle. One detail though - Tessai is a she ;)

Here it is - Tessai pondered, staring at the desolate structure in front of them - Our fate is in the Goddess' hands now - it hadn't been far from there that Talian had met his demise, perhaps three or four days travel to the North.

After having returned to the lair where he was killed, Tessai had found it empty, with some vague clues that those within left alive when she last pushed free could have moved south, so her choice of direction was simple enough.

"I would rather we would check the area in general first, making sure this wretched place is safe Reynaud" - the paladion replied - "Then I guess Gareth can set to work on the mausoleum itself?" - she finished turning to their gnome scout with a smile.

Unless you decide to circle around the ridge of the hill, the direct route to the mausoleums will take you right past the circular structure which, as Reynaud surmised, is probably the famed Well of Rappan Athuk. Unless this is all a very elaborate hoax entryway.

It does look very dungeon-of-graves-y.

There's certainly something to be said for circling around, though. There's a faint chill coming from the graveyard itself, and hanging around down there can't be pleasant at all.

That said, you're probably cutting a very clear silhuette against the sky right now, for anything watching from below.

Hehehe

Well, I always like to have the place scouted before wading in, if possible ;)

Me too. I suggest we get off the ridge and wait a short distance away while the area is scouted. Any objections?

Magnus had enjoyed the little jaunt into the wilderness, even if he was surrounded by idiots. Though to be fair, the old codger knew a few interesting things and the woman, Belle, was no slouch either. The few attempts he had made to engage her in profitable conversation had ended with her making excuses and leaving. She seemed to have no interest in the question of whether the Heimlin maneuver was better than the Rickard flick for common spell movements, or Gregoric chanting was better than throat warbling for incantations. Shame really, since she was probably the only one who would appreciate such fine distinctions as a fellow practitioner. The old codger seemed to use a different system entirely, something to do with mood and reason, while the gnome just bulled his way through the necessary motions with sheer will. Still, it got the job done.

Now, at last, Magnus stood before the fulfilment of his dreams. Rappan Atthuk, the fabled dungeon of graves, stood before him. Time to let the help earn its keep and scout out the location to see if there were any surprises.

"let's get off these heights. I don't like being so exposed. Gareth, would you be so good as to scout the area? I don't want to be surprised by any nasties lurking in the vicinity."

Reynaud nods, dons his shield, and waits for the others to begin heading down the hill.

They say skeletons explode here. Kill em from far away if they show.

Tessai raised an eyebrow at the fact that Magnus simply repeated what she had already requested from Gareth, but she dismissed as simply due to the fact he was probably not paying attention before - "Agreed Magnus. But I believe we should not move away. Gareth may need our expedient assistance" - she reiterated.

"Did you notice the creepy coldness around here? Maybe there IS something to all these rumors."

Gareth lands near the group. The gnome is barely visible inside the shadow vulture form, yet they can see his eyes paying attention to the group.

I'll take a look before, but keep a close distance, my friends! - he says, agreeing to the plan - And maybe we can actually leave this place someday too!

He flaps the not so strong wings, open his sharpest eyes and circle around for a moment. He never heard of these rumors - maybe his family isolated themselves too much. Nevertheless, he will take them all as possibilities... This place is creepy!

Gareth's circling bring little in the form of new details, as the party watches from the ridge of the hill. Apparently, there's small tunnels emerging into the graveyard from the side of the hill, just above the bottom of the slopes.

Gareth could just about fit into them in his natural form, he thinks, but it'd be a tight squeeze.

Quick Sketch
He'd have to fly closer to get more detail on a particular location.

Gareth returns and reports back about what he saw.

There are some small tunnels there, there... - he moves his wing - ... And there. I'm small enough to fit, but I'm not comfortable doing so.

He smiles, before continuing. He draws on the sand a sketch of what he saw.

I could fly closer to get more detail. Maybe we could however approach as a group the statue, and from there we analyze each thing separately. I'm not in a hurry...

You make your way down the hillside. Down here, the sides of the hollow towers above you, restricting the view of the sky to a minimum.

The graveyard is littered with clusters of grey, inscribed gravestones standing over seemingly freshly overturned piles of earth.

Just in front of you is the well. It's a gothic affair, ornately carved with fine artistic impression of demons, devils and undead things that form the bas-relief carvings. Runes and scribbling adorn the spaces empty of carvings. Its grotesque imagery aside, it's quite the work of art.

Peeking over the sides reveal only darkness in the depths, but darkvision reveal deep gouges in the wall that end some twenty feet down, as though something had tried to claw its way up from the darkness and failed.

Question: Did we leave our gear at the campsite or are we carrying it? Since we felt like something was watching us, should we be taking measures?

Tessai scans the area as best as she can, while moving along with the others.

There's a variety of undead and demons depicted. Notably, there's balors, mariliths, nafleshees, nightwalkers, skeletal undead and a writhing mass of incorporeal dead.

As for psychic significance, you're surprised to find little in the general area, considering you're in a graveyard.

The well, however, carries much history.

Meanwhile, detect magic turns up little, albeit theres a faint, but permeating necromancery and somewhat stronger evocation coming from down the Well.

That leaves the statues, the two smaller mausoleums, and of course, the tiny tunnel mouths.

You make your way amongst the clusters of tombstones. The statue you have your eye on stands in the middle of the cross, where the four wings of the graveyards meet.

The chill is growing quite oppressive - you feel the need to draw your cloaks tight around you.

Regardless. The statue stands alone in an open space free of gravestones. Upon inspection, it is a life-sized statue of a dwarf on a 4 foot by 4 foot stone block. He looks to have been a great warrior, and runes adorn the front of the pedestal.

By the plown up earth in front of it, the statue seems to have been visited often.

Unintelligble, sorry.

It's a runic alphabet. Terran, maybe? Something of that root alphabet, you're pretty sure. With that in mind, you conjecture that one of the words, near the end, is probably Bones, and that other rune before it means 'leaving' or 'take' or something related to that.

In the proccess, you bend in to study the runes, and it quickly becomes obvious that there's a hidden compartment below the runes themselves. It's not particularly well hidden, as secret doors go. If you pull a small nub, the small compartment will probably pop out.

You don't think it's trapped, although you might want a second opinion on that one.
