Really, it's even worse than Gorbacz made it out to be. Paizo's single nomination is for the Pathfinder Battles miniatures; a Wizkids product. Paizo, itself, has zero nominations. One nomination it is. For pawns. One of more of the judges must have a huge boner for Chaosium.
Paizo is nominated for Best Publisher. It's worth noting that Best Publisher nominees, unlike nominees in all the other categories, are not nominated by the judges, but by the general public. It would be kind of funny, and telling, for Paizo to win Best Publisher again this year.
I've been disappointed in the ENnie nominations the last few years, but this year is terrible. The Curse of the Crimson Throne Hardcover isn't considered one of the best adventures put out this year?

Edit: According to Morris, PF Bestiary 6 missed the release cut-off date for consideration this year. It's considered a 2018 release.

I stopped paying attention to the Ennies when Rasputin Must Die! didn't win best adventure.
I'm also surprised Paizo didn't nominate In Search of Sanity.

There is a lot of stuff in the noms I have not even heard of. I couldn't really say if they deserve to beat Paizo or not. Just glad to see a lot of active companies working away.
This is a good thing. Now you might be tempted to check out a few of the other games and maybe purchase a book or two.
I just found it Ironic that the CoC slipcase was nominated considering the total sheet-show that whole kickstarter was.

I was an ENnies judge, twice (2010 & 2011). I don't think I qualify as "change."
As much fun as listening to 60 hours of crappy podcasts can be, they really need to make an effort to bring in new judges year-to-year. Of the 5 judges this year, 4 of them have been judges for last 3-4 years. With that long in the seat, you really develop some very entrenched opinions and positions.
However, it looks like they've taken steps to address that: there's a qualification requirement that you can't have been a judge for the past two years. That means almost all the judges should be new.

The first, I have a professional relationship with both my own company and with Paizo (I've written for them a few times and I helped playtest Starfinder).
The second, I do not communicate "clearly" in English. My editors can vouch for that.
I should mention, that I am writing this while listening to Know Direction at work. I listen to lots of podcasts to get me through my boring day job.

Anyhow, I was personally impressed with Bubblegumshoe, so I'm not surprised at all the nominations it got. I don't think it's my kind of game, though, I just think it is really good at what it does. I was rather underwhelmed by 7th Sea, but I know John Wick has a lot of fans, so I'm not shocked to see it get nominated.
Anyone check out this "Cthulhu Pulp" stuff?

I think the 2nd edition of 7th Sea is great, personally.
One of the many things about awards like this: whether or not something is good depends in part on personal taste. (Not 100%; some things are going to be more generally considered high quality, and some low quality, even amongst people if disparate taste.)

Friendly reminder that anyone who places a high value on competitive awards ought to read Stephen Sondheim's Finishing the Hat, particularly his analysis and critique of awards.
I'm not going to try to paraphrase Sondheim, as he is a far more eloquent writer than I am. You know he's a good writer, because of all the awards he has:)

Or just maybe, crazy thought here, Chaosium had a really awesome year. The Kickstarter may have taken longer than scheduled (honestly, does any RPG Kickstarter ever finish on schedule?), but the final product is pretty amazing. And they've continued to support their new edition with great stuff.

Having been an ENnies judge for a couple years, I know from firsthand experience how one judge can affect the nominations. Get 2 or more judges together who are big fans of a certain product or publisher, and it's very, very hard to keep that publisher/product from getting a high number of nominations. And keep in mind, it's impossible to win an ENnies if you don't get nominated (except for Best Publisher, which if fan nominated).
Something might be "pretty amazing," but having been involved with that process from the inside, it makes me suspect that there were a couple of judges that really wanted Chaosium win some awards. The best way to do that is to stack nominations. (It's worse when you have a judge that has a personal vendetta against a publisher and tries to lock them out of nominations.)

For me, Chaosium winning all those awards was much better than anyone else winning that many awards, because know what? They MORE than deserve the recognition and accolades.
Paizo's had plenty of years where we've done well at the ENnies. Seeing other companies do well and reap rewards, ESPECIALLY when said company is one like Chaosium, which all but single-handedly (with a huge assist from Stuart Gordon, of course!) elevated H. P. Lovecraft from relative obscurity into the mainstream over the course of a few decades.
Chaosium's been through a lot, but know what? They're still making great products. They're still here, after all. That's more than can be said for the vast majority of tabletop RPG publishers. Like, say, TSR.
Let me just say, as an owner of the Call of Cthulhu slipcase-a-palooza...
It is an incredibly awesome product.

Actually, the "product" I was really referring to was essentially everything they have put out under the Call of Cthulhu banner over the past couple of years or so. Chaosium has simply kicked ass over the past couple of years.
Paizo....they are good, but to my mind, nothing over the past year or two really stands out to me. I think part of the problem might be that their releases have become (and have been for quite a while) very formulaic. There's a monthly adventure path, which will be 100 pages, regardless of whether or not the adventure would be better served with more or less pages. There's a glut of player options that's vaguely flavored for the Golarion campaign published in the Player Companion line. Ect, ect, ect. It's very rare that Paizo steps outside of their formula. And I think that can have an effect on people judging these types of things.

It doesn't matter how much or little a publisher puts out in a month or a year, judges can only nominate from products that publishers submit for consideration. So, for example, your comment about the "glut of player options that's vaguely flavored for the Golarion campaign published in the Player Companion line" is meaningless since Paizo didn't submit a single Player Companion to the awards.
Having been a person that judged for the ENnies, I can assure you that personal bias has a lot to do with which products get picked versus those that don't.

Nope, submitted on time. Robert and I discussed whether to submit it for this year as a PDF product or for 2018 as a print book and after some conversation he decided we should submit it for 2017. It was in well in advance but no joy. :(

We submitted it to the ENNies, but no love for Pathfinder products this year (and really for several years now).
I've noticed that as well. I've already submitted off Deadly Delves: The Gilded Gauntlet (the one that EZG yesterday gave a 5-STAR review, Seal of Approval and nominated for his top 10 best for 2017) to the Ennies, giving them months to play it before any serious amount of competitors arrive. If it doesn't even get a nomination, I'm more or less planning to give up on the Ennies altogether as biased against Pathfinder and am strongly considering find a way to organized some kind of Pathfinder Compatible awards (with one of the rules being, all nominations must have a pathfinder compatible logo on the cover).
Frankly, JBE does some freaking awesome work. Legendary Games produces exceptional material. TPK, Kobold, AAW, and many, many more continually blow my mind with how good they are and never receive the recognition they deserve because we all have a Pathfinder logo on the cover. I'm tired of not being taken seriously, so I am of a mind of doiing something about it.

And lookie, some of the winners are even from 2016 or 2014. Which is cool and all (I wouldn't spend my money on Paizo products if I didn't like them so much), but it also makes me think that to accuse them of being biased against Pathfinder just because of one year of not winning anything might be a bit too much
.
I mean, really, as much as I like Paizo stuff, there are other publishers out there whose stuff is as good as the stuff Paizo produces. And while I think that some of the Paizo products would have deserved a nomination (CotCT for sure, the Qadira book, Bestiary 6), I do not necessarily see them winning against what I consider very strong opponents.
That Aethera didn't make the cut is a shame, though. Might have stood a better chance as a Campaign Setting entry with the HC, who knows.
P.S. The Kobolds have won several ennies and gotten some more nominations. AaW has already been nomineed. So there has even been recognition of products with the pathfinder logo on them.

I hope I don't come across as too bitter. Pathfinder Compatible publishers don't exactly get taken seriously by the society crowd on these boards and I've become sensitive to it. I try to keep it in check, but I fail from time to time.
But I did feel that WotC's TftYP deserved a nomination and instead it got a Judge's Spotlight. Which, (and those that were Ennie's Judges in the past, please correct me if I am wrong) means that that judge felt it was a worthy product to be up there but not enough of the other judges did. Combine that with the fact that no other D&D/Pathfinder roleplaying products (not including the accessories) were nominated this year, makes me believe that enough of the judges were against D&D/Pathfinder as a game system.
That says "biased" to me.

The good news is that the ENnies changed their ules rgarding Judges' tenure and, as a result, 4 of the 5 judges for this coming year are new to the awards. That might shake things up a little.
And Dale is exactly right on the Judges' Spotlight awards. At least when I was involved with them, each judge had te chance to pick a product they liked that otherwise wasn't nominated for anything.
