Hi everybody,

A number of folks have been asking if I'd do an AMA thread, and I said to myself, "Self, you should totally do that!"

This is Ask Jason Nelson ANYTHING, so it's not necessarily limited to just talking gaming (as in, hey, actually PLAYING games) or publishing or writing or whatever. If you've got questions about any of the products I've worked on for Paizo or Legendary Games or anyone else, future plans and products, or non-gaming stuff like sports, religion, history, or whatever else, fire away.

Just remember Wheaton's Law, and we'll all have a good time. :)

Several times in my experiences with Pathfinder I remember looking at a spell or class feature and thinking "This is awesome!" and later find out it was your design. I wish I could remember them!

My questions:

What's your favorite design out of all the work you've done for Paizo? Or what design do you think is enjoyed by players more than any of your other designs?

Has anything you've created been nerfed or banned? Is there anything you've created that you wish you could update/rewrite because of some oversight?

Any plans for an unified book for kingdom building/mass combat with revised references and errata?

I can probably help Jason (a little) with that one, shadowkras:

1) They're still being written! Jason's got Ultimate Armies, and I'm doing Ultimate Strongholds, so there are a couple more books in the pipeline right now. No plans I know of for more than those, but if something else pops up as a gap in the rules, then more books aren't beyond the realms of possibility.

2) There are a lot of pages! I would love (love, love, LOVE) a compiled Ultimate Kingdoms book, but if comes about it will be a whopper, and probably needs Kickstarting. That requires work on its own, let alone the complexities of making such a compilation seamless.

So (since I can't think of a third point), there's no point right now, but Jason's aware of the interest (and if he isn't then we shall make sure he is), and if it makes sense for LG to do it, then I'm pretty sure they will.

Time for the usual questions:

Coffee or tea?
Boxers or briefs?
Coke or Pepsi?
Favourite Star Wars movie?
What made you laugh in the last 24 hours?
How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could Chuck Norris?

Excellent summation by Ben, and 100% right. It's something we've been asked about and which I'm sure we'll do at some point, but we're still working through new product ideas in this line, so we're not quite ready to (literally) close the book on it.

Not sure if this will come up, as it's an embedded video on a friend's FB page and I couldn't find a URL for it, but click here maybe it will. I did get a laugh out of it.

Good question. I have much love for The End of Eternity as an adventure, as it got to play with all kinds of fun Harryhausen-style tropes.

The Crown of the World gazetteer in The Hungry Storm for getting very naturalistic with the far arctic.

For monsters... I dunno, there have been a lot. One that sticks out in mind is the popobala, if only because it is probably the worst monster ever (not worse in terms of being bad design, but it is just a really, really rotten bastard of a jerk monster).

The Chort wrote:

Probably rage powers like Spell Sunder (AM BARBARIAN RAGELANCEPOUNCE) and monk archetypes like the Tetori and Sohei, or spells like aqueous orb and mad monkeys. Defensive feats like the various Shield feats, Combat Patrol.

The Chort wrote:

I don't know if anything has been nerfed or banned (you'd need to ask someone who knows much more about PFS than I do - which is pretty much anyone who's played or GMed more than a couple of sessions), but things I recall that could have come out better:

1. Selective Spell metamagic feat - I forgot to include the word instantaneous in the feat description. That would have avoided a lot of weeping and gnashing of teeth.

2. The Titan Mauler archetype - I'd like the rules on ridiculously oversized weapons to work a bit differently than they do.

3. The "[animal] Shaman" druid archetypes - I thought the phrasing was clear on what was meant about their wild shape - that it works as if you were 2 levels lower, INCLUDING the fact that you don't start getting it until 6th level instead of 4th. Nonetheless, there is a loud contingent that insists that, no, RAW, you get the ability at 4th, then it improves at 5th level, and then it gets WORSE at 6th level (as if you were 4th level again). That interpretation was so nonsensical to me that it frankly didn't occur to me that anyone could or would interpret it that way. Lesson learned. :)

4. The fighter archetypes in the APG almost all have trade-outs for the weapon training class feature. However, that same book introduced gloves of dueling, which enhanced weapon training and came to be regarded as almost a must-have item for fighters... and that didn't work with any of those fighter archetypes, which were deemed substandard because they didn't work with the gloves (which, of course, didn't exist when I was writing the archetypes). An unfortunate coincidence more than anything, but it just goes to show that it's hard to "future-proof" design work.

5. The Martial Artist monk archetype loses the ki pool but I forgot to write a swap-out ability for abundant step (which requires ki).

6. The charger mount archetype (Animal Archive I think) has an ability that swaps out for share spells - which cavalier mounts don't get.

What is your religion? (When you used the phrase "weeping and gnashing of teeth" it narrowed my guesses, but that could also just be cultural accumulation. Plenty of non-Christians use phrases like "writing on the wall" and so forth.) Are there any great minds in your religion (or atheism?) that you admire?

Do you enjoy any sports? I have an admiration for people who are the best of their field, no matter what it is, but otherwise have been uninterested in sports my whole life. Although a couple months ago I picked up Table Tennis and found it to be surprisingly challenging and deep when I discovered spin and all the different strokes and counters. I still suck.

How are the processes of writing rules crunch vs adventure paths similar or different?

In writing an adventure path, you're constructing a story without any idea who the protagonists will be; is that challenging? Liberating?

Do you have a favorite story that you found influential to your writing? Or just something you really enjoyed?

Christian, particularly of the National (predominantly African American) Baptist persuasion. My church home is New Beginnings Christian Fellowship; if you're ever in Seattle on a Sunday let me know if you'd like to go.

Very true. The English language is littered with cultural commonplaces and phraseology drawn from the Bible.

Sure. Jesus comes to mind. :)

In the land of mortals, I'm a fan of Reinhold Niebuhr and Dietrich Bonhoeffer, as well as Martin Luther and Martin Luther King Jr., Samuel Berry McKinney and Leslie David Braxton.

I love watching football (US variety), and I follow other sports to varying degrees, including baseball and basketball. I'm a huge fan of the Olympics - yes, there are all kinds of shady undercurrents behind the scenes, but the actual events are amazing and often moving. Just to pick one out of a jillion of them, I was watching this race back in 1992 in Barcelona and remember it like it was yesterday - try watching and not getting a tear in your eye.

Another moment was during the 1996 Olympics, when it appeared that swimmer Janet Evans was going to light the Olympic flame, but as she ran up the steps, all of a sudden out of the shadows stepped Muhammad Ali, the Greatest of All Time. Palsied and half-paralyzed with Parkinson's, he shuffled forward and took the torch and waved to the crowd, which erupted in an ovation like you've never heard. Beautifully, perfectly, the announcers said...

nothing.

There was nothing *to* say, and thankfully they recognized that and simply let the moment speak for itself. Ali lit the torch and the crowd roared again. I got a little choked up even writing that 21 years later.

Yes, I'm a sports fan.

The Chort wrote:

Very different. Crunch you can play with an idea or a concept from almost anywhere and find a place for it to land and massage it until it feels good. It can connect to other crunch but it doesn't have to, so you can design individual pieces in isolation.

An adventure path requires immensely more structure and coherence to a story, not just internal to your adventure but externally as it connects to other parts of the saga. There's also a lot more narrative description - the sights and sounds and smells of the adventure, the personalities and interactions, the plots and plans and contingencies for what MIGHT happen that you describe to the GM.

The Chort wrote:

A bit of both. Challenging in that you have to create situations that will equally challenge almost any potential mix of roles and abilities, without creating something that will absolutely murder a certain party mix while being a cakewalk for others.

Liberating in that you can leave a lot of things open-ended in a narrative sense. You aren't closing very many plot loops except for NPCs (and for PCs who happen to pick up a particular loop and connect themselves to it).

The Chort wrote:

Tons of stories I've enjoyed, from classic mythology to old-school fantasy like Tolkien, Howard, and Moorcock to more recent stuff like Wheel of Time, Dragonlance, and the various David Eddings series and any number of comic books, real-world history, Shakespeare, James Bond, Star Wars, and on down the line. I'm not sure that any one thing sticks out as a particular influence on my writing, other than a sort of literate sensibility in how you craft a story.

Have you completely finished the wheel of time? What are your thoughts on Brandon Sanderson? Do you think he did justice to the story when he finished it for Robert Jordan?
Have you read any of Sanderson's other works? If yes, what would you say is your favourite "world" by him? I love everything he has written and find the Mistborn and Stormlight archives to be amazing works of world creation.
One of my favourite things about them is that he has a magic system but rather than the system just existing in the background the systems intricacies affect the he story.

I have. I've even re-read a lot of it several times. A friend gave me the first couple of books and they sat in a bag for months until I started reading The Eye of the World and the first dozen chapters my thought was "meh," but as I kept reading I enjoyed the expanding world and the zillions of characters. Looking back after the fact, the first three books are very good, while books 4, 5, and 6 are among the best fantasy books I've ever read. 7 returns to very good. 8 is okay but feels like it's missing 100 pages or so at the end. The climax just isn't very impactful. 9 is kind of the opposite - most of the book is just okay, but the climax is MIND-BLOWINGLY AWESOME. 10 is one of the worst, most tedious fantasy books I've ever read. 11, the last one Jordan wrote, mostly shakes off the doldrums of book 10 (and the general lag building since book 8, with the exception of 9's amazing ending) and really gets things moving again.

The series had kind of lost its way in the wash of so many characters and had forgotten that Rand is the main character of the story. All the other characters can contribute motion and activity (much of it enjoyable, much of it not), but only Rand's arc could really generate movement in the metaplot. Once it returned to Rand at the center, the dam broke.

Then Jordan died, and Sanderson came in to bring the story home.

As for Sanderson's books, I think mostly they did a very good job. They continued what 11 had begun in savagely pruning the dead wood and bringing a lot of dangling plot threads to mostly satisfying conclusions with a rapidity that had been missing in later Jordan books in the series (aside from 11). There were a few changes in tone with a few characters, but I didn't think it was as widespread as some readers did. I was a bit sad about the deaths of some characters, but it's a war story at the end and you're going to have casualties.

My only real complaints were with the handling of Demandred in the final book, in part due to the repetitiveness of some of his scenes (notably with Gawyn, Galad, and Lan), but more because his sudden appearance with his allies came so much out of left field. Yeah, you knew he would show up at some point, but he had been so far on the sidelines for so long that you almost didn't care that he showed up at the end. Yes, we see him plotting with the other Forsaken as far back as book 6, but a few scenes sprinkled into the prologue or epilogue of books 11, 12, and 13 teasing what he was up to (finding his sa'angreal, making alliances or plotting with strange leaders, setting up his fake personality, etc.) would have gone a LONG way to making his appearance really explode onto the page. "OH YEAH, he is here at last, now it is ABOUT TO GO DOWN." Instead of "Who? Oh right, him. Yeah, I figured he'd have to show up at some point."

So, I think a missed opportunity there, but if that's my biggest complaint than I think I'd say it was a successful conclusion to the series.

I haven't read any of Sanderson's other books, though they seem to have a pretty good reputation.

You're welcome to ask, but whether I'm able to answer depends on the nature of the question. :)

Thank you. Here's the question:

WARNING! INCOMING WALL OF TEXT!:
Of late I've been mulling over a few ideas for PCs for APs, specifically Mummy's Mask and Strange Aeons. And after playing in Carrion Crown for a while, I've got Ustalav on the brain and while Mummy's Mask doesn't take place in Ustalav itself, I got the itch to make a character FROM there travelling to Osirion on an expedition, since Mummy's Mask is an AP that makes allowances for PCs coming from distant lands, as opposed to many other APs that assume the PCs are locals.

I have two basic ideas for PCs that developed in parallel, and I do want to use both, but I'm having difficulty deciding which to play in which AP. Both gel with the ideas and themes of both APs pretty well, and flipping a coin always leaves me with a feeling of "What If?" that makes me uncomfortable. Here's the two concepts:

The first is an investigator-type character, whether the actual CLASS of Investigator, or something close to it like an Alchemist, Rogue or Bard. They've studied at the prestigious Lepidstadt University and not only received one of the best educations in the country, but also became a skilled duelist, earning the famed Lepidstadt Scar (for those of you unfamiliar with the term, the Lepidstadt Scar is a cut on your face kinda like Inigo Montoya's from The Princess Bride that is a status symbol among Ustalav's nobility).

The second option is a True Silvered Throne, a high-ranking member of the Esoteric Order of the Palatine Eye. For those of you unfamiliar with them, they're kinda like Freemasons, and protect Ustalav via a combination of political maneuvering and mystical rituals, some of which were allegedly brought back from Osirion, and the Osiriani language features heavily in their ceremonies (they feature prominently in the backgrounds of both Curse of the Crimson Throne and Carrion Crown).

In Mummy's Mask, the investigator becomes an adventurer-archaeologist like Indiana Jones, using a combination of academic understanding, seat-of-the-pants improvisation and combat prowess to seek Osirion's treasures and put them in museums, and it fits well with the common plotline of Indiana Jones movies, where what begins as seeking a mystical or famous artifact ends up entangling them in conspiracies and dealing with the consequences of unleashing the dangerous mystical powers those artifacts may have. In Strange Aeons, they may have been a student or colleague of Count Haserton's who ended up being a thug for him as well, and may put the investigative skills they learned Lepidstadt University to join the Sleepless Agency, a company of private eyes that feature prominently in the campaign, plus regular scholars whose curiosity leads them to contact with alien eldritch beings and locations are common Lovecraftian protagonists (Randolph Carter, Dr. Henry Armitage, etc).

As for the True Silvered Throne, in Mummy's Mask they're exploring Osirion to better understand the rituals that are so important to them, and find documents of lost knowledge that they may bring back to Ustalav to improve their standing within the Esoteric Order and come closer to the enlightenment that is the Order's goal. Plus, the divine spells and abilities of the Shaman class could come in handy considering the sheer amount of undead in the AP. In Strange Aeons, on the other hand, they could be a noble Haserton contacted for information regarding the dark rituals he was studying, drawn into the Count's web of cruelty and insanity. Plus, one of the Campaign traits for Strange Aeons is "Ritualistic," essentially saying you remember a tiny bit of magic and vaguely remember that an understanding of rituals and performing symbolic actions in order yields result and believe such actions are the key to restoring your memory. And since more of Strange Aeons takes place in Ustalav, it makes sense that a a PC would be in the kinds of social circles that keep an eye on events like what happen in this campaign, and seek to get involved, even if what Haserton's up to has nothing to do with the Whispering Way, which is one of the organization's regular adversaries.

So...what do you think? Which should go where?

** spoiler omitted **...

I'd probably go investigator - Mummy's Mask and silvered throne - Strange Aeons, unless the party composition in Mummy's Mask is light on divine and you decide you want to fill that gap.

AND NOW~!

It is time for the questions.

You had to know this was coming...

Jason.

Jjjjjjjjjjjjjaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasssssssssssooooooooonnnnnnnn.

Super-serious series of questions*:

* Nnnnnnope.

If you could have 1d4 ⇒ 1 different super-powers, what would they be and why?

(Assume corollary powers required to make a given power work are part of it; i.e. Since you'd need super tensile strength/durability to, you know, not-die when you made use of your super-strength power, you get them both when you say "super strength" as a singular option.)

Why?

If, instead, you could be a gestalt of 1d2 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 super heroes, who would you gestalt to be yourself? Why? Which comic universe would you run around in? Would you prefer to be in that one, or this one?

On the other hand: BAM! You just gained 3d6 + 2 ⇒ (5, 3, 2) + 2 = 12 levels in a Pathfinder class (or classes)! Which class(es) do you pick, and why? Incidentally, if you could spontaneously switch races, would you? And if so, to which?

Similarly, you won the super-lottery, and gained mythic tiers! 3d3 + 1 ⇒ (3, 2, 1) + 1 = 7 of 'em! (And you gain class levels to match; please feel free to change your previous answer if this does so for some reason.) What path do you take? (Alternate option: substitute a single tier for a simple mythic template.)

Yet another query: you monster. Specifically, you CR: 1d30 ⇒ 6 (or less) monster! Which are you?! ... and would this have been your first choice? If not, which would be?

But the wheels of fate-time have spun again, and your everything has been transposed into that of someone else! You've just become a prepublished NPC from an official source! Which prepublished NPC is it?

What campaign setting do you run around in? Why?

As a final thing: blend any and/or all of the above questions into a single ginormous question: an optional blend of a prepublished NPC, monster, and some superheroes all walk into a bar... and out comes you, as a gestalt of those guys, the race you choose, some extra superpowers, and have extra class levels and mythic tiers on top! What are you?! (Other than "awesome" - naturally.)

Equipment is a non-issue (like adjunct super-powers; what you need to do <X> is assumed). Also note that any significant others can be brought with you.

"Official" and "Pre-published" are loose terms, but general expect something that has a solid publishing company and identifiable map/world/conceits behind it (like WotC for Forgotten Realms, Eberron, Dark Sun, Greyhawk, etc; or Green Ronin for Blue Rose, but not "True20"; or Paizo for Golarion, or the Maelstrom, or the upcoming Starfinder; but not "the Bestiaries" or "the Planes" or things like that - basically things that people can find and nerd out about with you). Similarly, if it has a solid AP out for it, that, too, is acceptable (like Legendary Planet; or any of Paizo's APs). It should probably be a d20 variant, but it can be whatever you like of those many variants (True20, Blue Rose, Paizo, 3.5, 3rd; etc.). That said, if a Homebrew or otherwise "weak" entry just needs to be there due to compelling reasons... okay. Similarly other systems. Let us know why! Computer and video game translations of such (Neverwinter Nights and/or expansions/sequels; PFO; etc) are acceptable as interpretations as well.

Similarly, for comics, it needs to be superheroes that people can reasonably be expected to come across - "that one I made up with my cousin as a kid" is an awesome answer, and worth noting and why, but prrrrooooobabaly isn't the best choice, unless it's just so powerful that you've GOT to. In which case: sure, but bring us along for the ride! Related, the super need not come from one of the "big two" in comics, so long as the people and world is both recognizes me and accessible - choosing The Incredibles world is valid, as is Spawn (blech); you're not just limited to Marvel or DC. Similarly "standard" powers need not apply - so long as it is clearly communicable, it's fine (even if all the field specifics aren't clear, that's okay - knowing you're powered by our yellow star is fine; you don't need to know this, but it's acceptable if you do).

Finally, presume you have the basics necessary for a happy life. Your spouse, best friend, and so on, can all be considered to "come with you" (should they choose to do so) wherever it is that you go.

Oh, and one more thing: if you lived through a Legend of Zelda (as one of the Links); which would it be, and why?

Thanks! Enjoy!

On the other hand: BAM! You just gained 3d6 + 2 levels in a Pathfinder class (or classes)! Which class(es) do you pick, and why? Incidentally, if you could spontaneously switch races, would you? And if so, to which?

Similarly, you won the super-lottery, and gained mythic tiers! 3d3 + 1 of 'em! (And you gain class levels to match; please feel free to change your previous answer if this does so for some reason.) What path do you take? (Alternate option: substitute a single tier for a simple mythic template.)

Yet another query: you monster. Specifically, you [dice=CR] 1d30 (or less) monster!

Why?

As a final thing: blend any and/or all of the above questions into a single ginormous question: an optional blend of a prepublished NPC, monster, and some superheroes all walk into a bar... and out...

My procrastination police will not allow me to answer all of the above questions at once, but to quickly answer a couple of them:

1. At least one of my classes would be paladin, cuz that's just how I roll.

2. If I were a pregen, I'd be Tjaden Ludendorff, one of the pregens in the Pathfinder Chronicles Campaign Setting 3.5 hardback, because that was my first D&D character ever that I adapted when I was creating NPCs for that book.

3. I've never played any Legend of Zelda game. I know a little bit about them as two of my kids have played a bunch of them, but I couldn't begin to answer anything about the details of any of them. I think I know the name of two: Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker. That's about all I've got.

I was going to tell you a great trick to avoid procrastination, but now I figure I'll just get it to you tomorrow.

The procrastination is still strong today! :(

That's okay - so is mine. ;)

Oh, and one important thing: don't let my series of questions dominate you, Intimidate you, or otherwise make it difficult for you to answer any other set of questions. And, if procrastination gets the best of both of us, and you never get around to answering all of them, just know this: I will still be your friend. At least, as much of a friend as I Canby, considering we are more-or-less strangers, over the Internet. But! I think you make really neat stuff! Also, you seem like a really cool person! Basically, my bill-explained point is this: the set of questions above, are pretty much exclusively for fun. They are not meant to be an obligation, wait, or other Burton. Also, talk-type programs make some very strange errors. But, quotes procrastination" so,…

Wow, thanks for taking the time to answer my questions! I almost edited that post to say "Feel free to pick and choose the questions you want to answer" since they're not the kind of questions you can answer in one word.

I might just take you up on that invitation when I'm in the Seattle area! I do actually live in Washington, but a good 3 hours to the south.

Tacticslion, it's as though the word Christian is mentioned and then bam! The heavens part and here you are. Haha, this definitely isn't the first time.

Random Question: Jason, how did you pick your avatar?

The ice devil art from the 1st Ed Monster Manual was always among my favorites in the old-school D&D art oeuvre, so it seemed like a fun choice when I signed up for a Paizo acct during the original RPG Superstar contest. If you've read my profile, you'll see I haven't updated it probably since then. :)

It's also evidently pretty rare - I think 8 people have it, but I've only ever seen one or two of them post, and them very rarely.

PS - Finished one project I needed to finish.

But not the one I was procrastinating on. :( NOW I'm REALLY gonna go do it!

Jason 1, Procrastination zip - long-overdue THING TO GET DONE is now over 1500 words closer to getting done.

Of course, I also ended up overwriting a different project by almost 1000 words. So there's that. But nothing is wasted; the overage has a good landing spot. :)

Sometime between now and later. The book in front of it just finished in layout, so it should be starting the process this weekend.

Hmm, just checked it and it comes up for me, both on the customer-facing side and on the back end. Check again and see if it works.

What's your favorite dinosaur?

Seems alright now. It was unavailable, for me, throughout the afternoon. Thanks.

Another excellent, and long overdue (sorry End, you're the man), review for Legendary Assassins. Congrats to you and the team.

Commonly known dinosaurs: probably triceratops or ankylosaurus.

More obscure dinosaurs: polacanthus.

I got marked down on a writing assignment in elementary school for saying it was my favorite dinosaur and drawing a picture of it; the teacher said I was supposed to choose one of the dinosaurs we had studied in class.

That's really unfair. Polacanthus was a really cool looking beastie.
