No one at Paizo has officially responded to the Cleanse and Surmount Affliction Spells, Samurai ability Samurai Resolve, Presitence Inquisition ability Inner Strength and various other abilities that are supposed to remove or suppress afflictions like Nauseated, Sickened or Paralyzed not working because those same conditions prevent the character from using the abilities that supposedly remove or suppress these conditions.

What is your take on the issue?

Links for you in case you are not familiar with it.

Certainly my opinions on rules are in no way official, but in reverse order:

1. No, you can't do a swift action as a move action. The rules say what they do and do what they say. 4E allowed you to "trade down" actions "standard > move > minor" but 3rd Edition and its offshoots, including Pathfinder do not.

2. You can make an argument either way on free actions. Nauseated says "The only action such a character can take is a single move action per turn." Free actions say, "You can perform one or more free actions while taking another action normally."

My take is that you can take one free action while taking your move action while nauseated. If you argued that being nauseated meant you were not taking your move action "normally" then you wouldn't allow it, but it's ambiguous.

For swift actions, my reading says no dice. They are similar in some ways to free actions, but they aren't free actions, and in fact specifically says that it "represents a larger expenditure of effort and energy than a free action." It's not a free action, so it doesn't fall under the rule of taking it while taking another action normally; ergo, you get one move action and can't add a swift (or immediate) action before or after it.

3. Surmount affliction works fine for everything except dazed and paralyzed. At that point, it's a judgment call.

If you follow the rule that specific trumps general, and the spell says that you CAN use it to suppress those conditions, then you can, even though the general rule is that those conditions normally prevent you from taking actions (including the standard action to cast the spell).

On the other hand, if your opinion is that the inclusion of those conditions is a mistake, then you should just strike out those two conditions and use the spell as is for other conditions.

The same applies for resolve and other similar abilities.

But play it the way you like; I was just at Paizo today and I can assure you that they will be quite okay with however you roll with it! If you're playing PFS, you'll have to wait for something official, as I certainly can't give that.

I wonder if anyone has questions about our upcoming Forest Kingdom Campaign Compendium Kickstarter, or perhaps which campaign line you'd like to see us compendify next!

I got the idea to make an elf bard who becomes a dragon disciple (black dragon, specifically) and part of me wonders if it's too "Mary-Sue."

"Oh I'm an achingly handsome, near-immortal being who plays magic music and is a decent swordsman and OH! I'm descended from a black dragon so I can grow wiiiiiiiiings!"

I just sort of have this hang up with roleplaying elves as they already kind of seem too perfect when compared with my usual fare of half-orcs, dwarves and tieflings, and adding dragon disciple just makes it worse. Am I overreacting?

Hardly. You should go all wings all the time, and she should go total elven goth like Amy Lee from Evanescence, but with black scales instead of hair.

You plan on going to GenCon this year Jason?

This is also when I realize there are so many interesting people I would like to meet that will probably be there. I'll need to make a list...

I will be there. I'll be spending some of my time at the Studio 2 Publishing booth hawking Legendary Games books and some time at various events!

Jason, I have recently decided that I need an android sniper girl with a rail gun rifle in my life. I just got an email shilling Dead Vault Descent and the upcoming Aethera campaign setting. What can you tell me about the tech contained therein? I need a HUD. And a surveillance drone. It has been a couple weeks since I have needed your legendary customer service. Sell me.

For higher-tech items like that, your best bet is actually the Treasury of the Machine from our Metal Gods line, which skews more in the future tech direction and definitely has targeting computers and scopes in it. If you want to double down on the android angle, Cyborgs is an entire 20-level class that is all about cybernetic modifications to the PC's body and gear.

Legendary Planet lands more on the magical side of the sci-fi/fantasy equation. Dead Vault Descent has a whole article on magitech character options and ad two-page spread of magical and technological items, and the following adventure, Confederates of the Shattered Zone has more tech items and an article on cybernetic enhancements.

Aethera is in between the two, and the core Aethera technology is gunpowder weapons, but those who master Aethertech can create (and, of course, PCs can find as treasure) advanced weaponry like the arc cutter, thundergun, and netherbeam rifle. Aethera also has the phalanx race, which is similar in concept but different in execution from the standard Pathfinder android - still definitely a mechanical race, but one with much more human-like thoughts and emotions and interactions.

Jason, I admire the work done in the Mythic supplements produced and the many different takes on reducing some of the crazy different abuses allowed by strict readings of the text and ways to curb power of some of the more potent abilities.

With that said, can you think of some abuses that people might think of using the Automatic Bonus Progression without the attunement ?

I have read about players acquiring many different bane weapons and going wild with those. I fail to think of much other than that.

It's not a campaign line but I'd back a kickstarter built around your legendary classes in a heartbeat. especially if it included a hardcover collection or collections and maybe additional archetypes, feats, etc. and Hero Lab support.

In the grand scheme of things, I don't think PCs carrying around a golf bag of bane weapons is really a big problem. At minimum, they're 8300 gp each, and if the PC is using one it means they're not using the other, so at any given time most of the investment they've put into bane weapons is sitting in their handy haversack or wherever doing nothing. I think that's actually an entirely reasonable strategy for resource allocation. Sure, the bonuses are a little bit better than they'd normally be able to afford, but in the great martial-vs-caster calculus, I think it's within the operating tolerances of the game.

We are considering that, and given that we've covered most of the martial classes already the chances are good that we'd go that direction first. Doing a compilation of ALL the possible classes out there would probably end up too big and unwieldy as a single project. I'm not sure how many new archetypes, feats, etc. that we'd add, given how jam-packed the class books we make already are in that way, but there might be a few new ones.

On the HeroLab side, they've indicated they're turning the faucet down to a drip when it comes to new 3PP Pathfinder content onboarding to their site, especially things that can be time/resource-intensive to integrate like new alternate classes. We'd love to be able to offer it, but it's probably not realistic, sad to say.

That's sad to hear about Hero lab but possibly great news if you decide to move forward with a Legendary Class Kickstarter for the martial classes! Thanks for the response Jason!

Hi! Just a quick one here.

I would want to make a Kasatha Monk in PF.
However my DM said that due to the race description saying “Kasatha has one main hand and all others are considered offhands.
However, monk class subscription clearly states that (while attacking) There is no such thing as an off-hand attack for a monk striking unarmed.
Would You (Jason) please confirm that monk trait override racial trait in the case of Kasatha?

I did I found out that You have expressed yourself on that matter before, however I have been unable to find that very piece of information.

Kind regards
Michalangello
