Interest Check: Razor Coast

Recruitment

Thinking I might run the Razor Coast Campaign, and wondering if there's any interest.

I would be making some cosmetic modifications. Chiefly, I would rather the "European" settlers were Spanish than British and French, and want to see some mainland Asian influence in the game (So, some NPCs would change ethnicities, and I'd be allowing Asian player characters. I also guarantee the presence of pirate junks at some point.). Early firearms would be common.

I'd have to do a full accounting of my PDF collection to see what I want to allow, but at the top of my head, I can say yes to the main Pathfinder Roleplaying Line except Ultimate Intrigue, Path of War, New Path Compendium, the Razor Coast supplements, and Heroes of the Waves.

Anyone up?

sounds interesting though I know almost nothing of the Razor Coast.

Same here.

The Razor Coast is, in a nutshell, Age of Sail pirate fantasy in what is best described as Hawaii, with a very rich sea of Polynesian lore being set before the players. It is very much a dark fantasy setting, as it is very bloody, very gory, and unafraid to portray colonialism as very, very horrid. The morality is very gray, and I'd best compare it to Dragon Age: Origins, where certain factions are clearly more in the right than others, but everybody is guilty of crossing lines. It's a high lethality setting, though characters in my games tend to be higher up on the power curve, so it won't be quite as deadly.

Blood, gore, and everyone takes the moral high road?
Sounds just like real life! :D

Seriously, though, sounds interesting.

If you go ahead, what races would you say yes or no to?

Interested in participating as a Ranger, raised as a guard and escort for a small riverbound merchant family. Is there a player's guide to refer to?

I'm curious what races are permitted as well, the Polynesian flavor sounds interesting.

Does anyone have any media recommendations to get the right feel for the atmosphere of the setting?

I'd be interested in playing a Tulita bloodrager. I played through some of razor coast a while ago, but I really don't remember much of it, although if a little prior knowledge is a deal breaker I understand.

Very interested in Razor Coast, went pretty heavy in the Kickstarter but haven't yet given it a thorough look (story of my life).

I am interested.

However, I don't have the Razor Coast book, is that a problem? I mean it must be, but how significant is another question.

My assumption is the ethnic shift commands a cultural adaption, yet does this make the campaign all human? I have no problem with that, but I just made a half-orc Maori shaman for another campaign, so I didn't know if you mean to "assign" certain fantasy races a real-world counterpart (such as elves being French, dwarves German, etc.).

I would like to apply with an idea I have, a witchdoctor shaman with the life spirit.

Sovereign Court RPG Superstar 2010 Top 16, 2011 Top 32

YES.

YES, PLEASE.

Hold on, I have to go make SQUEE noises.

Better now.

I'm thinking A Buccaneer Bard, the sort of guy who went to sea as a Naval recruit, was shanghai'd and is now a pirate.

Interested.

Yes.

Hell yeah I'ma dot for interest!

That's the one weakness of the Razor Coast. It kind of exists, but it costs money, and I don't expect anybody to buy it. Especially with the average lifespan of PBPs.

I'll hammer out a basic history, culture, and geography post for people without the books tonight or tomorrow.

I've been trying to think of some recommendations, and it's hard. I don't know of much Hawaiian fantasy, and none of what I do know of is near as dark as the Razor Coast, or uses the same wide selection of Polynesian mythical creatures. Pirates of the Caribbean might actually be a better place to start, but is rather lighter in tone. I draw comparisons with Dragon Age: Origins and, to a degree, Dragon Age 2 in terms of moral tone.

The Core 7

Orcs (You may build your character with Hobgoblin stats or Orc stats if you choose to be an Orc)

The two from the Razor Coast Freebooter's guide if you have that (That's not on the D20 PFSRD, unfortunately. One race is natives touched by the Shark God, one is Polynesian dwarves)

Tengu

Catfolk

Kitsune

Vishkanya

Tieflings

The races from Heroes of the Jade Oath (these are on the D20PFSRD under Rite Publishing).

You can use alternate race options if they're listed on D20PFSRD.

Not too much a problem. It's geared much more towards GMs than players, and is more a published campaign outline than a published campaign setting.

Given how variable the direction of the game is, it shouldn't be a dealbreaker. After all, even two full playthroughs really shouldn't look the same.

No, I don't assign fantasy races to real world counterparts. I prefer the approach that race and ethnicity are seperate things, which is how Razor Coast plays it. Any race can be any ethnicity, though orcs seem to be commonish among the natives, while elves and dwarves aren't very common.

Also, there's a lot of "Indonesian" half-orcs, I've notices.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Dang, when you mentioned the Asian influence, was hoping for kitsune to be available.

That was an oversight. I'll allow them.

I do own the Kitsune Compendium, the content of which is on the D20PFSRD.

I also forgot Vanara. Vanara are acceptable.

I would assume that if you went this route that you would also change out the goblin blood for orc blood and do the same with their racial languages?

My thoughts are currently thinking of an Orc (standard) monk who will go with a grappling/unarmed build.

I was thinking of creating an Orc Monk. The idea is he was an enslaved galley slave who was then put to work doing rowing and other manual labour. The harsh lifestyle as a slave beat most of his wilder tendencies and robbed him of his enthusiasm and generally mellowed him out. Later he was freed but decided to stay on as a bond-slave (a free slave) because he found that the hard work suited him and he enjoyed the rigid lifestyle (with a few less beatings). He is probably currently working on someones ship right now :P

Anyways, I was thinking of having him be a Str based monk focusing on strong unarmed attacks and probably grappling, he is a brute with his hands >:)
He also still wears his irons around his wrists with the broken chains dangling as a sign of his captivity and subsiquent freedom. Indeed, these often serve him better then he realizes as others who see him either see a slave or free man, and not a wild and dangerous pirate.
He only wears a minimal of clothing, shoes, breeches and the chains on his arms, and it is all of humble quality.
He is also LN. The chaotic and evil pillager has been beaten out of him and indeed he has found that he quite likes the rigid and (rather) simple life of an honest labourer.

Do we have an expected starting level? Such knowledge can often help with the creative process :)

I'd love this

Considering the Asian feel, would you allow Wayang? They seem to be a perfect fit with "Indonesian" Half-Orcs already in the mix.

That and there are no small races yet.

The "Core 7" are allowed, so that would include halflings and gnomes :)

Yes. The rationale for the rule is that I prefer Orcs to be a common race rather than mooks, but Hobgoblin racial stats are IMO better for player characters than Orc racial stats. Since Hobgoblins don't exist in my games, I sub them in for Orcs, but I keep the option of use Orc stats open in case someone wants to use ARG alternate options for Orcs. So, any Hobgoblin character is for all intents and purposes an Orc and treated as such.

It works, although I find standard Monks somewhat mechanically underwhelming, and Razor Coast is often pretty harsh. I can allow Unchained Monks or Talented Monks to up the character's power a bit.

Razor Coast starts everybody at 5th level.

Wayangs are okay, but there's also Halflings and Gnomes.

Joy! Then my preliminary submission will be an Earthkin kitsune fighter/oracle. Dual-cursed, with the wracking mysticism and haunted curses, and specializing in disarms and tripping while two-weapon fighting with a rapier and scorpion whip. That should work well all around with what the setting seems to be.

And for further inspiration, I'd recommend the Risen series, which seems to be a good way of envisioning the Razor Coast from what little I know about the latter; swords, pistols, magic, pirates and sea battles, ancient evils from beyond, morally dubious heroes.

I was thinking a Nagaji, they're on the D20PFSRD, and maybe a brawler? If you have any objections to this, I'm open to pretty much anything.

i may have an idea but it will probably be the oddball race known as human. I almost exclusive stick to core (well most of the time actually)

I have a few interesting idea since the Heroes of the Jade Oath is used but that really depends on weather this game has an element of comedy in it.

Anyway I am thinking a human brawler

Never read any of the material, but I'd be down for a pirate-esque sailing type of game. Had a concept in the works for a while that I never got to put into action, so should be fun!

@ Rosita the Riviter:
Got that all so far, thanks.

I would love to play a Catfolk, as they tend toward my favorite among the races. Possibly a Rogue, or maybe my old fave the swashbuckler. Haven't played a catfolk pirate since my last game with Edward! xD

Ohhh Tikkle you so funny.... May want to be Terra all over again.

Wait... Would this be a play-by-post, or getting together via skype/discord/something else? I'm just asking because I find it a lot easier to play by post.

Grand Lodge

This sounds amazing! I've been wanting to get back into play-by-post for a while now but haven't seen anything that really caught my eye until this. Very interested!
I'd love to play a human gunslinger (perhaps buccaneer or musket master if those are allowed archetypes).

Any guidelines on pantheons, are you using the standard Golarion deities? I know Razor Coast is big on Pele. Are you allowing options from the Freebooter's guide?

The two races you mentioned from it are the Dajobasu and Menehune, although those last ones are more like gnomes than dwarves.

*Waves* (^_^)

Hey-YA there!

I have this guy trying to get into a Skulls and Shackles game at the moment. If he doesn't make it, then I would be interested to tweak him up for this.

OK, I'm making a Nagaji cleric for this. For ability scores, what is the point buy, or do we use classic?

Lol, this is not the recruitment thread! This thread is to see if there are enough warm bodies to make a proper recruitment thread worth the effort to assemble.

Bodies? Yes. Warm? Mostly...

I will also be a +1 for interest. Please advise when you want actual recruitment submissions. :)

I have to admit I missed that initially, but doesn't really change much. I would be very interested (assuming I don't get into the other game I am trying for) and this is the character idea I would probably go for. I don't think it is really that different from people saying that they would like to try out one idea or another, it just happens that I already have one made up albeit much lower level.

Certainly count me interested!

Sovereign Court

I'm in.

I went in for the KS but have barely cracked the books.
Kind of fancy an agile dex-fighter: just can't decide between Tulits or colonial.

I'm interested, but don't have the books. Would need some background before I commit to a character concept.

The Exchange

Dot...a

I iz bein' interestin'!

Um.. ahm.. I mean interested!

Yah! That's the gooder word!

(^_^)

Would you be willing to let me Shield Bash with a Tower Shield? One idea I am currently circulating through my head is that of a Shield fighter who uses a few planks of deckwood to shove people overboard :p
That and a generally defensive shielded fighter who also shields his allies.
Light Spiked Shield: 1d4/x2
Heavy Spiked Shield: 1d6/x2
Tower Shield: ?
