Artyom Julum |
Spiderbeard, did my resistance spell get cast on Malvo before combat?
GM SpiderBeard |
Ah hah, I see I failed to roll Malvo's initiative and that just messed with everything.
Initiative for Malvo: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17
Close but on a tie the fairies go first. so the initiative stands. You're just paralyzed for one round. @Artyom - the spell worked but he bombed his saves. Alara and Artyom still have actions!
Artyom Julum |
Artyom lays a hand on Alara's shoulder and weaves his resistance magic into her.
Casting resistance. +1 to her saves for about 10 rounds.
GM SpiderBeard |
Prince Uspid shrieks his orders at the tooth fairies to bite them, yank their teeth out, make them pay! While doing so he points out Tornell. "THAT ONE! HIS GOD IS BAD! MAKE HIM PAY!" He quickly chants a spell...
Tornell's Will Save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
Which the cranky priest manages to resist.

"THAT ONE! HIS GOD IS BAD! MAKE HIM PAY!"
"YOU THINK MY GOD IS BAD!? SHE LET ME INTO HER CONGREGATION, WHICH MEANS... THAT I Just Insulted myself and agreed with you..."
Tornell lets his thoughts trail off. He observes the swarm of attacking nasties, and rather than try and attack them through allies, he decides to use their current focus on him to his advantage.
Taking a five-foot step back and Readying an action to attack any faeries that get in between me and Alara, thus getting a flanking bonus. And I'd also get an AOO as well.
Morningstar To-Hit: +4 (with flank)
Morningstar Damage: 1d8+1

Tornell gets ready to swing while Ridill hits nothing but air. The fairies leave Malvo, having paralyzed him and move in on Tornell and Alara but they both swing out at once as the fairies get up close and personal, killing two tooth fairies immediately!
They explode into clouds of disgusting-smelling fairy dust that just clings to everything and gets in your pores, sickening most of the group.

Artyom isn't much for melee combat but he tries his best and thankfully doesn't hit Ridill in the noggin. Malvo is a little better and as a tooth fairy gnaws on Ridill's jugular, it gets neatly skewered and flung against the wall. Once more it vanishes in a puff of gross, coating the entire party.
Prince Uspid shrieks, rushing in on Ridill and swinging with his scepter! However he simply bonks into the tall woman's armour and does nothing of note.

Sorry for not posting. I'll change that in the future.
Malvo |
Malvo shakes himself as he recovers from the paralysis, and coughs at the foul smelling dust. Despite this, he gets enough breath to cast a spell before stepping into the room.
Inspire courage and 5' step into the room.
Inspire Courage: As long as you can perceive my performance, you gain +1 Competence Bonus to attack and damage, +1 morale bonus to saves vs Fear and Charm.
Brother Tornell Alderwyn |
Tornell gags a bit at the dust. Oh, it's gross, but he's had to fight while hung over before, so it's not something he's completely unused to. Still unpleasant. And Malvo's battle cries are invigorating him.
Move around and into the room, strike at Prince.

Damage: 1d8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 + 1 = 5
Ridill |
Ridill shakes and shudders as he gags while keeping his mouth closed. I F$++ING HATE TOOTH FAIRIES, he snarls in his head as he swings his sword up over his head before binging it down as an axe as the prince so kindly presents himself for his execution.

@Artyom - it's cool I was pretty spotty and that can make it easier to miss the game updates.
Yoink!: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Tornell moves in and swings out at the wiley prince, who dodges and sticks his tongue at at him.
"HAH! Your teeth will be mine! I am invincible! Invi--AUUUGHHH!"
Ridill's sword just hammers into the Prince, knocking him into the ground briefly before he woozily buzzes back, badly hurt.
He groans. "Take their teeth! I must feast."
The one remaining tooth fairy sees Ridill beaming after his powerful hit, and promptly yanks out a delicious-looking biscuspid before throwing it at the ground near Prince Cuspid.

Artyom Julum |
Artyom scowls as the tooth fairies attack. And he curses at himself for not having more offensive spells prepared. All he can do his lay a hand on Ridill and weaves his magic into him.
Casting resistance. +1 to his saves for about 10 rounds.

Alara gets whacked with a morningstar for her troubles! Uspid's tongue snakes out, and he snatches Ridill's discarded tooth from the floor before swallowing it. He grins as some of his wounds heal before he quickly chants a spell, pointing triumphantly at Ridill.

Holding my action until Ridill makes that save. If he fails, reroll with Saving Finale. Whether or not he needs the finale will determine whether I attack or restart the performance.
Brother Tornell Alderwyn |
"Okay, that's just gross! And I'm barely keeping my lunch down as-is!"

Hitting fastforward.
You all circle around the two fairies. These have been frustrating, digusting opponents and with your combined efforts you pound the last two of the little bastards into a fine paste. As Prince Uspid falls...
KABLAM!
3d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 3) = 10
An explosion rocks all of you, sending you all flying as Prince Uspid lets out a shriek before detonating in a spray of teeth and gross fairy dust. You all fly back against the walls and although injured, the upstart prince has been defeated.
End of Combat
You pick yourselves up from the debris and, injured and miserable, make you way back to the Queen with the Prince's scepter in tow. She exults at your defeat of her wayward son. The weird bloated insect-fairy wriggles over, and provides a stamp on all of your arms, which magically affixes with fairy dust.
One out of three of your stamps have been collected. With that, she dismisses you so she can figure out how to rebuild her kingdom. As well as indicating you may sleep wherever you wish to recover before you journey on.
Ding! welcome to level three! You have all taken 10 damage, but you can all rest and recover with what resources you have.
Brother Tornell Alderwyn |
"Ugh, I'd love nothing more than to get out of this creepy place... But then I rememeber where we are, and that the outside isn't that much less creepy. Guess we're sleeping surrounded by teeth. Ick."
"Don't bother asking for healing. I'm tapped out. Though wasn't our next destination going to be a while away? Probably will have a day of walking to rest and recover."
Malvo |
"A solder learns to sleep wherever he can. I'll survive, though I agree I'll be happy to leave this place behind."
Artyom Julum |
Artyom shakes some dust off of his robes. "Well, I need to rest. I need to recharge my powers, gather my spells, and write down our exploits. For that, I'm willing to rest in this palace."
Alara Shinrin |
Alara looks down at the stamp on her wrist and she sighs. "Finally. We can move on from this weird tooth-fairy mafia-cum-royal dynasty."
She looks around at Malvo, Brother Tornell and Ridill. "How are you guys doing?"
Did you guys get new teeth?
Ridill |
Ridill gracisouly bows in thanks to the Queen after their wrists have been stamped before sauntering away with the others.
"Been better, hey, do you think I should get a silver replacement or go hardcore and get cold iron?" he asks Alara while absentmindedly feeling the spot where his tooth used to be.
Alara Shinrin |
"I think cold iron might be a bit hard on your gums." Alara tilts her head, looking at Ridill's mouth. "Aren't replacement teeth usually made of gold or some other kind of soft metal?"
Ridill |
"No idea, never needed em before now. They just regrew after a bit in the First World." he replies while snapping his jaws to test something before abruptly stopping as his nose drags him a bit in sniffing. "Oh wow, you smell great."
Malvo |
"No idea, never needed em before now. They just regrew after a bit in the First World." he replies while snapping his jaws to test something before abruptly stopping as his nose drags him a bit in sniffing. "Oh wow, you smell great."
Malvo clears his throat. "Not something you generally say to your friends while others are in the room ..."
He pauses, then returns to the previous conversation. "I doubt any of these will just grow back, although who knows how things work in this realm? If not, I'll stick with something traditional. I don't plan on biting any fey, so cold iron seems an unnecessary step."
I have no idea whether the tooth regrows when the ability damage heals. I guess we'll find out!
====================
As the group rests for the night, Malvo gets everyone's attention. "We're going to be together for a while, so it makes sense to prepare for group tactics. Let me show you some hand signs and short code words to help get the most out of group tactics."
Just giving some RP flavor to my new feat, letting me aid everyone on skill checks with Inspire Competence on the whole party. :)
Ridill |
"It's not really an earnest compliment if you only say when no one is around," Ridill matter of factly replies before turning to the halfling, them promptly recoiling and coughing. "Oof, I can see why you prefer the peppermint ones, that is some strong medicine in those potions."
Recovering, he adds on to Milo's thoughts "Yeah, this place seems the antithesis of the First World, souls and death and all that. And it'd mostly be for intimidation. This crazy f$~!er put cold iron in his own mouth, what's he going to do to us if we piss him off, ya'know? That kinda deal."
---
Ridill tilts his head back and forth, trying to memorize the halfling's signs.
GM SpiderBeard |
One thing you guys notice as you rest here - the tooth fairies seemed to have plenty of gold teeth among them as keepsakes they couldn't eat or didn't want to use for decoration. They're in fairly decent condition and enough to allow anyone a twinkly smile if they so wish to replace missing teeth.
With this awful place cleared out, you rest up properly and get a good "night's" sleep and wake up as refreshed as you could possibly be.
Your next locations are either Nine-Eaves, the gloom-encrusted manor operated by a puzzle-obsessed psychopomp. Or Salighara's Scriptorium, which is run by a tedious bureaucrat who may want labour for the stamp.
Alara Shinrin |
"Oh wow, you smell great."
Alara looks momentarily perplexed.
"Oh?" She scratches her head. "Well, thanks."
"I mean, considering how those tooth-fairies stank so much when they died, it kinda isn't that hard to smell better by comparison."
A little blush creeps into her cheeks.
Malvo |
Malvo chuckles. "If expletives bother you, never spend time near the barracks back home." He thinks for a moment, then adds, "Of course, it's probably best you don't do that anyway. Your ma would have a fit."
If neither destination is notably closer than the other, then let's go with the first one.
Alara Shinrin |
Malvo's words cause Alara to physically flinch.
"...I know she would." She gets out before taking a breath, her throat tightening and tears beginning to rush to the corners of her eyes.
GM SpiderBeard |
The next morning you put this awful fortress behind you, and head off to Nine-Eaves.
The dead roads are a dreary journey for reasons that needn't be explained. Occasionally psychopomps pass on by, giving you the kind of weird look you'd expect extraplanar bureaucrats in spooky masks. After several hours journey, Umble and Thoot's directions pay off and you spy your destination.
Looming over the road like a wizened old man, this ancient manor of dark, splintery wood rises three stories tall. Several windows and small balconies jut from the manor irregularly, each under a sweeping eave of the building’s sharply pitched roof. A wide doorway stands in the front of the manor, with a greenhouse of grimy glass set against its side. The building exudes an air of gloom and age.
