PFS -- Best ways to shrink a Penguin

Advice

Grand Lodge

The Background Concept: The Blues Brothers (PFS)

Music and Mayhem.

____

MECHANICAL CHASSIS:

Joliet Jake Blues: Half orc Celestial Urban Bloodrager 1 / Averakan Arbiter Bard X

Elwood Blues: Half orc Celestial Urban Bloodrager 1 / Urban Skald X (with technologist feat and disable device from trait)

We're both taking the half-orc feat: "Amplified Rage." If the party doesn't want to rage with us, we'll wreak havoc together. If the party does want to rage, Elwood will inspire them and Jake will pass that teamwork feat around to the entire party using the Bardic Masterpiece "Battle Song of the People's Revolt."

____

THE FLUFF:

We're on a mission from God.

____

THE PENGUIN:

Because the Averakan Arbiter gets free teamwork feats and the Skald does not, I decided that I had best take a Valet familiar in lieu of my bloodline power from Bloodrager, so that I can self-trigger the teamwork feats I get at levels 7 and 11.

I don't want a boring Greensting scorpion. I've seen too many of those. Storywise, for the Blues Brothers, you cannot beat "The Penguin". (Ideally, she should should beat you. With a ruler.)

However, a Penguin familar is size small. Too big to carry in a pocket. I could carry one in a pack on my back, but do I really want to suffer medium encumbrance carrying one?

If I cannot work this out, I will get a black rabbit that I name, "Ray," after the Ray Charles "Shake a Tail Feather" dance number in the film. And get improved initiative to boot.

Can you bright folks help me make this work? Remember, this is a holy thing. We're on a mission from god.

No, Ma'am. We're musicians.

If it's a familiar, you can use Share Spells to cast reduce person on it, unless the Valet archetype trades out Share Spells.

Grand Lodge

Before you get too hooked up on using Battle Song, apparently there's a new archetype for Skalds in Ultimate Intrigue where they can select teamwork feats whenever they could normally select a rage power and share those with their song--so potentially you could use your normal performance and get its benefits while also sharing teamwork feats.

I don't have it yet so I don't know what the specifics are. I'm interested in it for a character I've planned, but I don't know what it gives up so idk if it'll even work for me (or you).

It's also important to note that the skald/bard doesn't actually have the teamwork feat chosen via Battle Song--the feat is only granted when Battle Song is performed. This is important to note in case you were planning on saving performances at some point and using the teamwork feat with just the two of you without sharing it with the rest of your party (basically no teamwork feat unless you're performing Battle Song).

The bard archetype Averakan Arbiter gives teamwork feats. The characters will both have the Amplified Rage teamwork feat, one via the archetype and the other via using a normal feat.

Thanks for the heads up about the new Skald type. Doubt that I will use it since I look forward to sharing rage powers, but I will be looking it over.

The Exchange

Agreed. Thanks for the heads up on the archetype. We'll be picking up that book anyway.

Our plan is to use the teamwork feat most of the time for US, while inspiring courage and doing other stuff for the team, and then later share it around when we get multiple ragers.

That's all true, I just wasn't sure which teamwork feats the skald was planning on taking regularly and which teamwork feat(s) via Battle Song--so I thought it was worth mentioning now before you got too far in your career in case it mattered.

And from what I've heard, it sounds like you can choose either a teamwork feat or a rage power (and still qualify for Extra Rage Power). Again, I haven't seen the archetype yet so I don't really know :(. The book comes out on Wednesday, mine should arrive by Friday. I'm guessing d20pfsrd already has it all implemented and is just waiting til Wednesday to "flip the switch" so it won't be too long til I (and you) find out if it's worth it.

Surely instead of Ray you should have Curtis! (Cab Calloway)

I was thinking of Curtis, but everyone I mentioned name Curtis to drew a blank until I described the character. I need name recognition!

Oh... here's a thought! What if I get a porter vanity? I could have the Penguin carried around by her very own porter!

Hmm

Scarab Sages

Carry Companion will let you keep it in your pocket, but It wouldn't be able to benefit from teamwork feats in that form.

The Exchange

Reduce animal might work but you'll need to UMD it. Alternatively maybe a wand of floating disk to UMD.

Grand Lodge

Yeah, penguins are 70 pounds and have a movement speed of 10 feet.

Here are some of the suggestions that have been made so far for Penguin travel:

  • Get a riding dog for the penguin;
  • Get a wand of Floating Disk;
  • Get a wand of Ant Haul (for me) and a back pack;
  • Spend 5 pp on a porter who will run madly away every time intitiative is rolled;
  • Multiclass with tattooed sorc (NO!);
  • Get scrolls of Reduce Animal and UMD (expensive);
  • Get a wand of grease and let the penguin slide everywhere;
  • Wand of hydraulic push to do the same thing;
  • Give up and take the mechanically superior rabbit.

    Keep those ideas coming, folks! Bonus points if you can somehow fluff it to work with the Blues Brothers. I'm not yet ready to give up on this idea, in part because an emperor penguin would be so memorable, but I have to admit that this really needs WORK.

    Hmm
    (aka Joliet Jake Blues)

  • The Exchange

    Penguin + shared spells + enlarge person and ant haul + undersized mount = riding penguin

    The Exchange

    + red and blue ioun stones = police car riding penguin

    Get a puffin instead

    Grand Lodge

    OMG... That might be my solution. Would it break reskinning rules to call it a penguin though?

    In character, I don't believe so.

    Out of Character, yes. Anyone doing the Knowledge skill check would say it is a puffin.

    To which we can say:

    "You can take that up with The Penguin! Watch out for her rulers."

    Grand Lodge

    So, should we go for it? It's different at least. The puffin is 17.5 ounces and has much better movement!

    Hmm

    Puffin stats from Reign of Winter Player Guide:
    N Diminutive animal
    Init +2; Senses low-light vision; Perception +6
    DEFENSE
    AC 16, touch 16, flat-footed 14 (+2 Dex, +4 size) hp 2 (1d8–2)
    Fort +0, Ref +4, Will +2
    OFFENSE
    Speed 10 ft., fly 40 ft. (average)
    Melee bite +6 (1d2–5)

    STATISTICS

    Base Atk +0; CMB –2; CMD 3
    Feats Weapon Finesse
    Skills Fly +8, Perception +6

    Moves at the same land speed, but is small enough to easily be carried. One big difference is that they can fly.

    Pictures and basic information indicates a puffin is about double the size of a teacup.

    Grand Lodge

    They are sooooo cute! They should have given it a swim speed too, but one cannot have everything. And if they can fly, they can use that Lay on Hands on other party members.

    I will have a raging puffin... We really ought to get it a ruler!

    "Ow!" "Ow!"

    Hmm

    The Exchange

    Where's the Lay Hands coming from? If they are tiny, watch for provoking from enemies as you need to get into your allies square to deliver touch spell. Evolved familiar will give it reach, and avoid that, though.

    Lay on wings is probably more accurate.

    If you wanted to sub it there are definitely smaller kinds of penguin (Say, Adelie) that you could use the puffin with the fly speed swapped out for swim, hold breath, and a toboggan speed with no issues.

    Scarab Sages

    Put it on top of a television set, and it'll explode in a few minutes. Problem solved.

    It isn't exactly lay on hands.

    The bloodline familiar for Celestial Bloodrager bloodline gives fast healing 1 for a number of rounds. It has to keep its claws on you for that time.

    This is PFS. The familiar for Penguin is set to the Emperor species. Sadly. An Adelie penguin would have been perfect!

    Burma!

    .... Sorry, I panicked.
