Top 10 Favorite Races + Class

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Just wanting to have fun, so I've seen plenty of Class this, Race that discussions so why not talk about the combo of the two. What's your favorites?

Mine in no particular order:

1. Catfolk - Inquisitor: Sure they have the penelty to Wis, but cat's are natural hunters, and who hasn't felt like their cat is judging them? I generally pop this out with Desna or Caydean as the deity as both make sense for the freedom and Cats=Chaos idea.

2. Kobold - Ninja: They are small, really sneaky, and love traps and sneak and stab. What's not to love? The fact they are generally adorable mini dragons helps too, vanishing trick, and tail terror feats make them fun as well. One of these days I'm going to build a Sweeper + Kusari-Gama trip build.

3. Gnoll - Paladin: Nothing says holy knight then a near seven foot tall creature normally known for eating people. Also lay on hands to people thinking a gnoll is about to eat them. It was hilarious.

4. Ratfolk - Gunslinger/Wizard: Because Skaven are awesome. If Spell Slinger was better...eh, I still like this, shooting and blasting people with lightning bolts and cloudkill...happy days.

5. Halfling - Cavalier (Order of the Paw): Tiny lancer of doom, with an adorable puppy as a mount. Bonus points if the riding dog can be a...Dire Corgi.

6. Dwarf Wizard -: I like them, Dwarves aren't normally thought of casters but this and Deep Earth Bloodline Sorcerers are so much fun. Dwarf Skald was very close to.

7. Half-Orc Monk: I also like Half-Orc Cleric, but even since 3.5 I've loved playing a big green and mean punching machine.

8. Kitsune Barbarian: Kitsunes are tricksters, kitsune have a str penalty, but you know what? A rabid angry fox to the face hurts. I had an Intimidate build and he was so cool.

9. Lizardfolk - Saurian Shaman: You know dinosaurs are awesome, this is also a class I like playing as a Kobold too, but Lizardfolk have the dino theme more to their side. And like the skaven analogy, Lizardman riding a Carnosaur. Oh yeah. Also fun to summon a T-Rex right onto a ship you are going to pirate...just saying.

10. Dhampir - Oracle of Life: Cause sometimes I like to throw common sense right out the window. Before the errata this would of been Orc-Scarred Witch Doctor, but oh well. This is still a fun build if a bit crazy. Have to get Life Dominate Soul though. Blood Drinker would be fun too if it wasn't considered evil.

(Oops I meant to put this in General Discussion not PFS, can someone move it please?)

Shadow Lodge

Wish I could play a lizardfolk character one of these days. Somehow I can't see it happening what with the Reign of Winter.

Anyway, Spiderweb Software's Avernum games are tote sweet and that's the kind of saurian I'd go for.

Yeah that would be problematic. Mine was a replacement character for a Skull and Shackles game.

"Before the errata this would of been Orc-Scarred Witch Doctor, but oh well. "

Which errata messed up Scarred Witch Doctor for you? The only one I know of was the one to make it PFS legal by saying " half-orcs may select racial favored class options, archetypes, traits, and so on, as if they were a full member of both races (a half-elf can select elf and human rules elements, a half-orc can select human and orc rules elements)."

But to answer your question. I love the idea of any of the animal like races (grippli, catfolk, lizard folk, etc) being a wilpshape druid that turns into what they resemble. Its like evolution backwards or a make your own werefrog/werecat/werelizard/etc kind of feel to it.

Shadow Lodge

Witch Doctors no longer cast using their Constitution, they just get more Int to offset their orcish meatheaditude.

Yeah and if you are playing straight up Orc, its a massive nerf.

The Exchange

Tiefling alchemist...or investigator...

Dark Archive

I have found myself rapidly becoming a fan of the psychic class, so I would probably rank Tiefling Psychic as my top combo.

Buuuuuut if I could pick absolutely any combo (e.g. a combo that would never be legal in PFS because this race boon will never happen and application of this feat is questionable), it would be a Goblin Monkey Gunslinger with dual medium pistols (using goblin gunslinger feat) and reloading with help from its tail in a horrific mix of booming gunfire, high pitch shrieking, and billowing gunsmoke.

Aasimar Alchemist was my first ever character. Funny combination, but he was so great.

I also have a gnoll oracle of all of the good gods, he's their pawn in a game if "what can we do with the weakest member of one of the lowest races?"

Homebrewed jackal skinwalker as an alchemist devotee of Anubis was fun.

The Exchange

The character I'm having the most fun with right now is a Wayang Witch.

She's fun to play and very effective as a buffer/debuffer.

I can help! Lv1 Spellslinger/lv19 any other caster.

Spellslinger's class features are not restricted to spells from Spellslinger levels.

Grand Lodge

They are as much as spellstrike from magus.

Sczarni

Half orc bard. Because drill sergeants can motivate and inspire just fine.

I'm very partial to fetchlings and I'm not 100% sure why. Maybe one day.

dwarven druid. Wisdom AND con at the cost of.. -1 to handle animal. Plus earthy flavored goodness. Sign me up.

Sovereign Court

From the Spellstrike class feature: "[...]whenever a magus casts a spell with a range of “touch” from the magus spell list[.]"

From the Arcane Gun class feature: "A spellslinger can cast any ranged touch attack, cone, line, or ray spells through his arcane gun. When he casts through the arcane gun, the gun’s enhancement bonus (if any) is a bonus to the spell’s attack rolls or to the spell’s saving throw DCs."

Sylph + Kineticist (Aether+Air)

So an air being, bending air? :P

Changelings, forever and always. ^_^

I tend to play a lot of Charisma-based classes (by coincidence; their mechanics tend to be the ones I favor). Bards, sorcerers, paladins, and more.

I'm one of those guys that during stormy weather, sits outside in his swim trunks. I did steel construction for several years, just because I liked being at the top of the construct where the wind blew the hardest. Wing-suit is my favorite form of travel, particularly on cloudy windy days. ;)

So yeah... the Sylph Kineticst (Aether/Air) screams to me like no combination ever has. :P

2nd favorite: Sylph from the Wizard Elemental School of Air.

Favorite combinations...

Aasimar or Tiefling Druid: Particularly when the Aasimar is of Agathion Heritage or the Tiefling is of Rakshasa heritage.

Elf Sorcerer: But only if the societal expectations of the setting would place the elf into wizardry naturally.

Android Psychic: Most recent one, I like the area of the emotionless spellcaster who's weak in social area, or the Android who against all odd depends on a connection with others for their abilities.

Half-Elf or Changeling Witch: Witches who live on the edge of society are always fun, and Half-Elf and Changeling seems like a perfect match since they don't fit natively into the society of their parents (unless you're playing in Eberron)

Basically any combination of human, half-orc and charisma-based casting will always appeal to me. Just returned to PFS with half-orc Oracle of Lore, in keeping with this theme.

Some combos that seem fun and I'd like to play sometime:

Kobold Sorcerer (orc bloodline)

Dwarf Goliath Druid.

Dwarf Mounted Fury/Mammoth Rider.

(Yes, I like the idea of 'normally he's small, but is currently very large)

Sovereign Court

I'm playing a Ranger-demonslayer Tengu in a Jade Regent campaign and its pretty sweet.

Otherwise;

halfling barbarian/rogue

Human bard-any

Half-elf witch

Changeling cleric

Personally, I really like the idea of an Aasimar (Angel Blooded) Celestial Bloodrager. So much Diablo 3 flavor in that combination!

You can also play the inverse with a Tiefling (Asura blooded) Abyssal or Infernal Bloodrager for even more Diablo 3 goodness!

Im a Drow Necromancer. Yeah its not super original, but Im lawful evil and pity any NPC who thinks im a Drizzt knock off. Sure ill save your village. Whats that you cant pay my price? That will be 20 years in my army then.

Grippli frog domain druid

With some of the fresh content in Dirty Tactics Toolbox, I might be able to finally make the Nine-tailed Kitsune I always wanted!

Now... what class...

Yeah I wanted to try the tail feats too, but it seemed more like an NPC thing. I'd love to see a solid build

Sylph AeroKineticist

Oread Geokineticist
Ifrit Pyrokineticist
Undine Hydrokineticist

Sounds like no-brainers to me ^_^

Changeling Witch. Strangely un-synergistic stat setup considering the fluff relation, but very ripe for drama concerning your parentage. I also salivate at a reason to have heterochromia in a character beyond "sounded cool".

Debuff and laugh at people all day.

Dark Archive

Half-Orc Inquisitors are actually very nice, as are vanara rogues.

Human Commoner.

Tieflings go with literally everything, but Tiefling gunslinger/alchemist top the list for me.

Simply Human Bard for me (specifically Sound Striker)...love that Favored Class Bonus!

Undine (Watersinger) Bard. Because I didn't want to wait for Kineticist to come out.

Now if only Bards got an archetype for Kineticist abilities that just so happened to stack with the Watersinger archetype...

Try a catfolk bard with a 1 level dip into oracle of lore. This allows you to dump INT and WIS and still have the absolute best knowledge skills in the game. Admittedly this works better as an NPC.
