To be fair each director only said a version of 'its certainly plausible and possible.' Neither confirmed they were lovers.
JJ Abrams was actually quoted that from a much earlier 2016 interview and out of context, the qestion asked was not about these characters in particular but about same sex couples in Star Wars in general.
Fans can take away from it what makes them happiest, as they should. I personally don't see the two characters' relationship in those terms.
I very much like the idea of them as brother in arms who are also dear friends.
That's as strong a bond as any out there.
Looper, the source in your post, has also gotten a few Star Wars facts wrong in the past, particularly in the OT.

Just a heads up, IF the director actually made them the ONLY Homosexual characters in the movie, as they are Asian, it is actually an old racist and discriminatory slam against the Asian community.
I'm not going to explain it here, because it can get long. However, whenever you see movies that ONLY have Asians as being the homosexual, it is actually NOT promoting LGBT as you may think, but is a direct reference to some pretty terrible things that occurred to Asians and were done to Asians in the 1800s and stereotypes that are still promulgated about East Asians (and specifically in many instances, East Asian men) to this day.
Just be aware, by supporting things like this, you are continuing a discrimination against Asians (a backhand way of saying it) that has been going on for over a century and promulgated currently in Hollywood.
Just so you know, as most people are ignorant of this...but many Asians (especially those who were under colonial rule) are not.
If you support the KKK and racist discrimination, think as you will, but if they really are trying to shove this insult towards Asians into this film...well...they would have done better if they had actually done something to further the LGBT agenda rather than racism.
As I said, if it's Only Asians in a film that are homosexual, that is a racist attack that's a continuation of something that's been going on for over a century. It saw extensive prevalence in WWII in racist attacks against Japanese (and Chinese too) in films and media.
There is a REASON that ONLY the Asians are made homosexual in some films, and it's NOT an LGBT (unless those LGBT are also racist) focus, but rather a reference to something much darker and horrendous in the past. NOW, if there are LGBT individuals of all takes and sorts in a film, that's different, this deals with films that focus on making ONLY Asians Homosexual in them.
If this film is doing that, in addition, it's a double slam against the Buddist religion as well, which would make it two types of discrimination in one go...interestingly enough.

I remember you sending this to me via pm.
I see where you are coming from, but I think this would be too specific and archaic to be done out of bigotry. I don't think the people who worked on the film are old enough to hold these views. As mentioned in another thread, it would be like someone calling me a moon cricket.
GreyWolfLord |
It's actually in full on discrimination mode in some parts of California currently. Hollywood is actually deep in the root of it currently. Hong Kong is basically it's counter (and to be clear, Asians have no problems with homosexuality and probably are far more forward in some of it's portrayals in film, but there's a difference between how Hong Kong is doing it and how Hollywood is doing it).
We could continue it via PM...as I'd like to not bother this thread too much. I would hope it's done out of ignorance and not on purpose in this regard.
I don't think Rogue One is inferring anything like that. If it is, I'll be ignorant unless it's undeniably confirmed. I liked the movie. I would hate to have anything racist or discriminatory mixed into it.
I prefer a Star Wars world where anyone and anything is possible and all sorts of individuals are included, where you can be a woman or a white man and be homosexual, and it isn't just confined to the "minority races" and all of that.

Honestly for once im glad their wasnt any obvious love story involved to muck up the story. If there is some subtle nod to LGBT i didnt get it and it doesnt bother me if its there. Double for the Asian slam if present. I know JJ didnt direct this but hes been pretty nonchalant in the past about offensive things in his films so who knows. /shrug

I thought Lucas was worse. <-- Not my opinion but by reputation claiming incidental racism in his films. The Trade Federation being a prime example supposedly.
I'm also in favor of the non-love story for once.
As a side note, there was a review of Moana that praised it for the same thing. Saying essentially, "Finally, a Disney Princess that doesn't need a man." Which I took to be unintentional humor as the character of Moana is like 12 years old. Not that 12 yo can't have crushes but romance really isn't a thing at that age.

Saw R1 again over the Holiday. This time I saw it in IMAX 3D instead of 2D. The CGI of Tarkin was less noticeable this time. I could tell it was CGI in 2D, but it looked natural in 3D.

That's FOUR Star Wars cast members who've passed in the past year.
Attempting to change the subject to a less sad tone...
What would constitute enough time to pass for the Spoiler tags to be unnecessary? 2 weeks, 3 weeks, a month?
I really want to speculate more about R1 without the possibility of forgetting the Spoiler tag.

His ideas were generally good. His writing, not so much.
I, as well as a great many others, were saddened when Disney scrapped the entire EU. However, they DID bring back Thrawn, as well as some ideas. I for one wish they would bring back Mara Jade in some fashion.

With the way the Star Wars anthology movies seem to be going; I might enjoy those more than the later trilogy. Rogue One was a fantastic military science fiction film. I always felt the other Star Wars film were solid in the science fantasy/space opera genres. Rogue One felt like it really attempted to bring the military realities of the Rebellion home to the viewer. In 2018 we are going to get a young Han Solo movie, and I know there is rumors of a Bobba Fett film. I also hope the rumors of a Kenobi film pan out. At this rate, I will definitely like the anthology films more than the core trilogies.

To My Fellow Loyal Imperial Officers and Citizens, the new year is upon us.
Some have said 2016 has been a dark time. Perhaps.
But lest we forget, it is always darkest before the dawn. Let us then take deliberate steps to insure that for these Rebels, that dawn never comes.
May your bring honour to your Emperor and Empire!

Given that he managed to make Jedi seem boring, I'm not sure I can agree with you.
Perhaps his plan for the seventh movie was to focus on the rebuilding of the Jedi order, except now they wouldn't only sit down to negotiate trade disputes and watch political proceedings, they'd also use the Force to become actuaries...

Like I said, not so much good with the writing. Heck, the original was re-written and edited by his wife. We see how that turned out.
In all honesty, the only real EU character I would absolutely LOVE to become canon is Revan. He was almost in an episode of Clone Wars, which would have been amazing.
