Best way to make a "Time Mage?"

Advice

Dark Archive

So I've been meaning to make a PFS character who has an in character reason for playing scenarios out of order: they've been hopping back and forth through time. Be it through their own design or someth8ng beyond their control, I just love the idea of a character who meets strangers and starts telling them inside jokes that don't exist yet, or continually asking how their old chums in the Shadow Lodge are doing.

Anyway, I'm looking for suggestions for ways to represent this the mechanics. Naturally my first idea was a Time oracle and the rest was easy to figure out, but the lack of Haste and Slow really rubs me the wrong way.

Isn't there a revelation in the time mystery that lets you use either haste or slow? From d20pfsrd:

Quote:
Speed or Slow Time (Sp): As a standard action, you can speed up or slow down time, as either the haste or slow spell. You can use this ability once per day, plus one additional time per day at 12th level and 17th level. You must be at least 7th level before selecting this revelation.

Not quite as good as having them for real, but it does have them.

I had a suggestion, but then I saw it was for PFS, so my suggestion won't work... as it requires 3rd party (ironically the author now works for Paizo)

I would go with a Arcanist School savant with the forsigth divination school. Most of the time magic things dosent translate very well to Interactive stories like PaP RPGs
But with that you get the Time spells and a glimpse of the future.

Unfortunately, since this is PFS, you pretty much have no chance of your character being a "time hopper". Also, honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if people call you out for metagaming for having your character know stuff that people in the present day wouldn't know, regardless if it's past or future knowledge.

A Speaker for the Past Shaman can pick up the Time mysteries and get Haste and Slow (and any other Wiz/Sorc spells) through Arcane Enlightenment. Heavens or Lore primary, but you can probably choose any of them.

But I'm not sure how satisfying it will be ultimately. In my experience, divinations rarely have a significant effect on PFS scenarios. You can RP weird knowledge, but you can for the most part do that with any class and some hand waving justification.

Honestly, I would toss the idea for playing a Time Mage in PFS as they are too restrictive... but that is a personal bias.

I'm not saying it couldn't work, nor that their are not flavorful options of sorts, just they would never be as good as the Time Warden class which is the definition of a 'Time Mage'.

Still... since this is for PFS, I would say an Oracle of Time being your best bet perhaps.

Nomad Psion from Dreamscarred Press can do very well as a time-focused caster. Time Hop is a delightfully fun power that can solve all sorts of problems if you are creative!

If I wanted to play a time mage, I'd play a summoner and make my eidolon myself or a relative from the distant future. You also can't go wrong with a class that gets haste and slow 1 level sooner than a wizard.

I'm afraid Time Travel is out side of the mechanics available within PFS play. The immersion within the setting is weak enough as it is. The last thing we need are gimmicks like this that break it further.

If you have the chance of playing in a non-PFS campaign with a DM willing to consider interesting ideas for end game adventures... I would recommend the 9th level spell Teleport Through Time spell from 3.5 edition D&D.

That is a a very interesting way of allowing time travel, though DM permission is a must since it will make more work for them. A notable problem is finding a copy of the spell online, and there may needs be some discussions of the 'rules' for time travelling with how actions in the past effect the party's future. You know, normal time travel consideration.

I think I know who you're talking about and I'm just going to recommend it anyway.

Owen Stephens - when he worked for Super Genius Games - wrote a fantastic thing for time-based characters: Time Thieves and Time Wardens (collectively referred to as "Chronothurges"). It also has options for core classes. Excellent stuff well-researching.

Also absolutely excellent and well worth mentioning.

Unfortunately none of it is available for PFS. Thus they are mentioned not for your specific situation, but for people to be aware of at home games.

They are awesome options.

(Also, there's a PF artifact that can be used to travel through time. Very useful for Time Travel plots!)

Oops. Sorry. I missed the mention of PFS. Outside of PFS, I still recommend the Nomad.

There are a great many more characters in need of love in my character gallery. Be sure to check out (and favorite) its comment thread as well.

It's less of a time travel mechanic, and more of a lighthearted explanation as to why someone can perform missions in an order that don't synch up with the linear progression of the seasonal structure. As for the metagaming, the idea is that he'd make references to the past more than anything. And when it comes to future knowledge, he'd run on a strict "No causing time paradox" policy to avoid trolling NPCs or me having to spoil myself on scenarios that I haven't played/run yet.

Yeah, I was thinking Summoner for this, but for once I wasn't actually all that interested in an Eidolon. Oh well, maybe I could make some sort of transparent, humanoid shaped thing with a very literal hourglass figure.

And that awesomeness alone is enough to make me reconsider the Time Oracle. Thanks, RD!

If you'd like more information about the world that Drosil came from, look up the Raven King in my character gallery. There is both a mythic and non-mythic version of the Raven King available, complete with fanatical cultist servants.

If you make an Elf< you can use the ancient lorekeeper archetype to gain access to some sorc/wiz spells.

It would take a lot of commitment (or some really good friends) but you might want to try to GM at GenCon this year (or ask a friend who does) as if rumors are correct among the races on the GM boon for GenCon will be the Samsaran who would be a very flavorful race to play for this concept.

Furthermore mechanically they could resolve your dilemma - at 1st level you can substitute their very good "Shards of the Past" racial trait (+2 to any two skills of your choice and they become class skills) for the amazing "add 1+your spell casting ability score bonus spells from ANY spell list of the same type to your class list of your current class" - they have to be from an arcane list if you are an arcane caster or a divine list if you are a divine caster but they don't have to be spells you can immediately cast. Really really powerful - and open to abuse when you include spells from classes that have spells at a lower than usual level - but assuming there is a divine list that includes haste / slow you could add those spells to the Oracle list.

As well they have some great favored class bonuses (add one spell known from the Oracle spell list for Oracles - has to be one level below your highest level spell but very helpful in expanding your flexibility as a spontaneous caster). Their bonus for Wizards is far far less useful (same ability though since wizards can just pay for additional spells known it isn't nearly as useful)

If you're open to third party supplements, look at the Time Warden or Time Thief by Genius Guides.

Otherwise I'd go with a Witch with the Time Patron or Diviner wizard with some careful spell selection, potentially reflavored to fit.

Yup! That would be it. Plus, the "iconic time thief" is real photographs of model Jenny Poussin who is a Pathfinder player herself (or used to be, no idea if she is still active) which is a geek bonus.
