Well, fsck. Not that I haven't been expecting this for a while, but even so.

"Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life." What a (perfectly) twisted man. Thank you for the words sir; sending positive thoughts to his family.

Thank you for your books, your wit, your anger and your creativity. May the destination of this journey be to your liking.

I have to admit that I haven't read one of his books for a long while but he was a huge part of my youth and his take on the world of fantasy certainly made a large contribution to my opinion of what makes good fantasy. This is very sad news. I wish you well Mr. Pratchett and thank you for all the good times.

I came to your books for the laughter. I stayed for the compassion and learned some important things along the way.

Thank you for everything Pterry, and godspeed towards a place that needs no maps.

What a sad day indeed....

I'll wear some Lilac, while Sir Pratchett rides Binky...

Thank you for the laughs, the love, the wit and wisdom.

...damn.

Not a huge fan but DAMN, the man was an icon. Things aren't going to be the same without him...

You gave us all an excruciatingly long farewell. What you had to go through is horrible. It is a relief to know that struggle is over now. You were one of the greatest in your field, and you possessed the rare gift of making people THINK. Not many of us on these boards would be who we are today if not for you. I certainly wouldn't.

Goodbye, and thank you.

Goodbye, and thank you for the many enjoyable hours in a truly unique world, strangely mirroring our own

This make me very sad. His books got me through a very difficult phase of my life.

Sir Pratchett's twitter account has his farewell.

Presumably his website has one as well, but it's down.

He will be missed. To put it mildly.

Here you go.

These threads will probably get merged.

This saddens me a lot. His books helped pull me through a very difficult time in my life. RIP Terry.

I never got into Discworld, mostly because I kept insisting at starting with the first and second books, which my noisy brain could never quite find real traction. (Many have since told me it's better to start farther in, and then go back to the first books once you're truly hooked.) But I enjoyed the hell out of Good Omens, which I largely attribute to Pratchett more than Gaiman, and I'm on my third paperback copy, having one fall apart and having given the second away to a dear friend.

Gaiman wrote "Neil Gaiman: ‘Terry Pratchett isn’t jolly. He’s angry’" back in September, and I think it largely sums up my brief impressions of Mr. Pratchett that I gleaned from Good Omens. Requiescat in pace, and thank you for all the joy and righteous anger.

Thanks, found it shortly after I posted this. RIP Terry. Yow will be missed.

I like to think he and Death had a jolly good laugh as they rode off together.

And I can't bring myself to write this again, so here is my post from Facebook this morning:

Words cannot express how incredibly sad I am about this news. Pratchett has been an immensely wonderful influence on me in the last decade+ and the universe has claimed a truly brilliant star back into the greater cosmos.

As I watched, the great turtle turned away. Before it faded from sight, I saw an elephant lift its leg one final time.

For some reason, I think of the very last scene in The Colour of Magic.

spoiler:
"Below, the whole Universe twinkled at Rincewind. There was Great A'Tuin, huge and ponderous and pocked with craters. There was the little Disc moon. There was a distant gleam that could only be the Potent Voyager. And there were all the stars, looking remarkably like powdered diamonds spilled on black velvet, the stars that lured and ultimately called the boldest towards them... The whole of Creation was waiting for Rincewind to drop in. He did so. There didn't seem to be any alternative."

Decide to look up Terry Pratchett's page on Wikipedia to reminisce a little bit. I didn't realize he had a coat of arms

"Don't fear the reaper"
I do hope he was at peace when he passed.

:( I usually try to name one of the city guards in any of my campaigns "Carrot" or "Vimes" or something.

Our NWN server's main city militia is captained by one Samuel Grimes. I wasn't there when he was created and put in but I like to think of him as our little salute to the master.

"This is how you do Lawful Good, you pansies."

He will be missed.

Well as a Librarian there's not much else to say other than

Ook ook ook...ook ook. =(

Sir Terry's books have been a part of my life now for around 30 years and this is a truly sad day.

As many have already said, he will indeed be missed.

Sovereign Court

I can only imagine that he's sat in a dark garden, eating one of Albert's bacon sandwiches.

The author of my youth who never went away, and of my most re-read books.

Sad news.

His work is woven so deeply in my tapestry, to pull at a loose thread would unravel me entirely. I owe so much of my intelligence, humour, curiosity and kindness to his works. He championed equality and respect and his books will do that job forever.

GNU Sir Terry Pratchett.

This is very sad news for me.

Not unexpected due to his condition, but still very very sad.

I have probably read more of Sir Pratchett's books then any other author over the years, and his passing leaves me with tears in my eyes.

Thank you, for everything.

..SQUEAK. =(
