Heggal the Cleric is awesome! She has Kyra's RotRL healing powerz except with allies instead of divine cards. Also, she reveals any ally with a Diplomacy check to acquire on it to add 1d4 to any of her checks. Jesus, these characters are amazing. If only I could convince my group to hold off on S&S until they release

These are really cool. Can hardly wait to get mine.
A couple of typos I noticed:
Wrathack's 2nd role is listed as "Senty"
Radillo's 2nd role lists his name as "Sajan" instead of "Radillo"

"Before you are dealt damage, you may display 1 (□ 2) (□ any number of) allies;
after you are dealt damage, return them to your hand."
Anyone see something beneficial in doing this that I don't? Would you be displaying them for an on card effect?
Even without knowing why I would do this, I agree Hawk, Valeros is going to be nuts.
Vika Blacksmith has some cool power synergy.

Because when they are displayed, they aren't part of your hand (just like Toxic Cloud isn't when you play it), so you can't lose them to the damage you are being dealt.
Displaying them this way wouldn't activate the powers on them.

The bards all look like crap to me. None of them can reliably hold their own very well, which is a major draw back to this game.
I love at least one character in all of the others though with the cleric deck having four rock stars if you ask me.
The rangers look great aside form the half-orc, which annoys me. They are my favorite race in the RPG and yet they are treated like dumb monsters here. I'm really hoping monstrous races will get some cool stuff in the future! Maybe a half-orc barbarian or goblin alchemist in future class decks?

I also don't like how the S&S characters are geared so specifically for the set. I'd expect some of that, but it make sit more difficult to use those characters for other sets if we decide to do so. I'm going to try out the base set, but I might cancel my subscription if it doesn't blow me away.
Can you give some examples? I think in general, they've said they often try to do one "general" role and one role more specific for the adventure path they appear in.

I was surprised at how similiar the characters are in their different versions (like how all the Valeros's have the ability to help out others at their location). It's thematic and cool, I think. Pick the one that suits you best.
Sweet merciful crap, class deck Valeros is amazing.
Amusingly enough, one of his powers is almost useless in organized play. Getting to bury a random ally from the box is much less exciting when you don't get to keep it after the scenario. Granted, it guarantees having an ally for a reward, but still.

Look at the bright side - with the addition of the class deck characters, you have a ton of options to choose from when you start an adventure. If you don't want the S&S bard, that's okay! There are 5 others to choose from, come Sept 3rd!
I guess I'm saying that the addition of the class decks makes this forgivable, to me.

I'm just starting to look at the cards, and I can already tell that Siwar is going to make me irrationally angry for a long time. This has nothing to do with her power level and more to do with what it means to cards in the homebrew forum... (You should try not to have 2 d4 on a card except in very unusual circumstances...but Siwar does! You shouldn't have a +3 skill on a d12...But Siwar does! Using a single powerful die to replace a whole variety of checks leads to repetitive gameplay...But Siwar does!...No she doesn't, she has a very small subset that she changes...yeah, but still!)
Ah, good times are coming...
(Note: I'm not complaining, or saying she shouldn't exist. I just know what's coming and am dreading it. Also, I've only looked at Bards so far, so I may have more things irrationally peeving me before all is said and done. You had to make a lot of cards, so I'm sure you had to bend a lot of rules. I still think you did a great job, as all these cards look fun and unique while still feeling "Bard-y")

12 characters - only two mention anything S&S-only on their main character card (Jirelle has two 'ship's and a 'Swashbuckling', Lirianne has a single 'Firearm')
24 roles - 12 have literally no mention of anything S&S-only, including both roles for Alahazra, Damiel, and Oloch
To me, I'm afraid I don't see that as "geared so specifically" at all

Nonsense! Both of the new Lems have game and so does Meliski. They might not hit crazy hard, but they're also made to support.
The S&S Lem can use finesse melee weapons at mediocre strength, but he also has three spells at d10+1 and, most importantly, can recharge a card to ad d4 to any of his checks (it doesn't say "another character")!
The Class deck Lem is an excellent spellcaster and can heal himself easily, possibly without even needing a cure in his deck.
Melisiki is kind of a mix of the two - he's a solid spellcaster and can re-roll his own die by recharging (like S&S Lem, he doesn't say "another character")!

Well, that didn't take long. Come on down, Zarlova, my new most irrationally disliked character. On a side note, I now know the ability that I named "the single worst designed ability I have ever seen" costs 3 power feats, not one. So at least I can take that as solace...

It's not that I find it annoying, but it could be nice knowing exactly which power you refer to. But I think I know which one you refer to in this case?
All the clerics made me want to put one in my first play of S&S. But I really found the consept of Heggal most fun and he'll get a place on one of my early groups.

Sorry, I was referring to the ability to use knowledge on any check to acquire a boon. One of the homebrew designs had a similar ability (though a bit stronger), and I went a bit crazy with it at the time.

I assume you can't tick the "any Boon" on Zarlova before the "Blessing" one- but I'm now struggling to remember how the rules work on ticking feats- I know +1 always has to come before +2 etc, but i thought otherwise it was more flexible?
- for example, on the same feat - i assume we can take the +1, +2, before we take the "blessing" / "any boon" upgrades?

Seoni can do the same as a Tattooed Mystic with just 1 power feat. Her Knowledge check is only a d8 + 2 though. (edit: +2 (or 4) more if it's Magic)

If they're adjacent, you must take the one on the left first.

I literally just got to her... I want to cry now... (not really, but I still don't like the idea of an ability like that. Has anyone here done a playtest with that ability? It seems like it would make the game boring, but maybe I'm missing something)

It wouldn't make it boring for me. I remember getting frustrated a number of times when my Seoni would explore and find a really weapon or item that someone wanted, and she would have no chance of acquiring it. Well now I'll have a good chance at it! (If only they could do they same for me when they find spells I want...)

I haven't playtested that exactly, but I've gotten a lot of games in with RotR Lini, who can eventually auto acquire many, many boons just by having an animal in her hand; I didn't get bored.

isaic16 |

Now that I think about it, it isn't nearly as bad as the ones that I argued against in Homebrew (the first was on a character with d12+3 knowledge, the other was d8+2, but always vs 8 DC). In this case, it should almost never be auto-acquire, especially since Seoni still wants Cha at least as much as Int. My concern with an ability like this is that you can just take it and never have to even consider how difficult to acquire something is again. With Seoni's, and with Zarlova, there isn't too much risk of that happening. So, on further review, instead of making me hair-pull-out frustrated, it just goes with my previous comments about Siwar (they're fine, but I don't look forward to the spawn they will produce in the homebrew section)
