Thinking of un-subscribing for Iron Gods

I'm not sure how else to get the message across that I'm not interested in seeing more AP's with a big influence of technology/sci-fi.

So I guess the only way is voting with my wallet. I hope others do the same so we get as little as possible of this sort of thing in the future. It will be interesting to see how popular something like this is going to be.

To everyone looking forward to this, please don't take offense. I hope you have fun with it.

I want more stuff like Iron Gods, but I've been a subscriber for years. I'll just have to subscribe harder.

While I'm not sitting in on the meetings Paizo has about this sort of thing (any sort of thing, actually), I think you can safely assume that there will not be another AP focused on technology and/or Numeria for many years to come. This is also true for APs that include a trip to Earth, or are focused on pirates, or feature any other prominent twist/hook found in previously published APs. Numeria is the only techno-fantasy realm in Golarion, and there is plenty more of the world left unexplored. Paizo has demonstrated a commitment to trotting around the Inner Sea and beyond. The only exception, really, is Varisia (for reasons well explained by others).

Personally, I would recommend that you keep your subscription: the AP might just surprise you. If Paizo announces Iron Gods 2, then a wallet vote might make more sense, IMHO.

Scarab Sages

The APs need to branch out to prevent bland settings, but because of that there will occasionally be ones that don't click for you.

I'm looking forward to Iron Gods, but I would feel the same way as you if another Weeaboo AP came out.

I heard that they try to flip between vanilla/experimental APs to keep most people happy.

@ Morain: What Macona says here has the ring of truth. I don't think its a hard fast rule, but I bet you'll see a traditional style AP next time around. The AP Guys really do read the forums and while they abide by their decisions, they do take the interest of the fans into account and strike a balance.

Mike Shel is right! Iron Gods might surprise you and the next AP might be more to your liking.

Morain, While I do not agree with you I can relate. Been thinking about subscribing for a while, but was unsure if I would like the mythic rules so didn't for WotR, and MM to me does not sound very exciting so still no. Iron Gods sounds unique enough that I want it, and just crazy enough for it to be awesome, so I'll subscribe then probably.

Each AP is going to appeal to different people. Some will like the freedom of kingmaker, some like the darkness of Carrion crown, and some like the craziness of Reign of Winter. There is no AP for everyone, and the only way they can make the best AP's for the most people is to look at reviews, message board posts, and sales. So the absolute best way to have your voice heard is to cancel your subscription and post. Just remember to subscribe again when you see an AP that you like.

Scarab Sages

look at this AP like you looked at all the others, you might not play in it, nor might you GM it, but it could give you numerous ideas for other characters you might run, in-depth information on the country it is based in, NPC's worthy of using in a different campaign, unique magic items (because there are always a few in every AP), and spells/armor/weapons unique to the region.

Skulls and Kingmaker didn't do it for me, but I have them and read through them occasionally. Skulls inspires my ship to ship combat need, and Kingmaker has so many natural area maps that they can be re-used over and over again. (Like the mite hideout and the bandit lord's ruins in the first book of that AP.)

There ideas are just the tip of the iceberg for me.

Silver Crusade

10 bucks says the next AP will be set in Arcadia. I saw some art that one of the guys posted on Tumblr and it looked a lot like Incan/Mayan kind of stuff.

As for Iron Gods. I look forward to it! I do not get stuck in one way of thinking when it comes to playing RPGs. There is room for all kinds of stuff in today's games.

Silver Crusade

and by the way it was art he was using for research. Not art for the next AP.

I think those are things for Mummy's Mask since I see Egyptian hieroglyphics and old Nile gods. Of course there is also Indian and south american artwork, so maybe?

Danubus wrote:

Interesting. Some Mesoamerican goldwork, Egyptian goldwork, apparently Roman goldwork, something Asian or Southeast Asian (Indian?). And some pictures of Adam Warlock.

Gilded Men.

Could be something to do with El Dorado, or a Golarion version of El Dorado. Not necessarily Arcadia, though, but could be.

(And, come to think of it, Adam Warlock's big shtick is that he can surround himself in a cocoon to be resurrected from death).

I'd lean towards something to do with the big bad in Mummy's Mask, but it would be very interesting indeed if it was Arcadia related.

Morain, Like you I am not thrilled about Iron gods either. I also wasn't thrilled about Skulls & SHackles, the Serpent Skull, others either.

However, there have been many more adventure paths that I have liked such as Kingmaker, Wrath of the Righteous, Rise of the Rune Lords, Curse of the Crimson Throne Shattered Star, Jade Regent, Carrion Crown.

I am playing in a Reign of Winter campaign now which I am enjoying, however, I am not looking forward to a particular section

:
where the PCs go to World War 1 Earth and go after Rasputin
. So there you are.

I am willing to keep my subscription.

I never recommend rejection of something sight unseen. It's all in the execution. Remember Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, which is considered the fifth-greatest Dungeons & Dragons adventure of all time by Dungeon magazine? This AP might be a lot of fun with a great story. If not, you can just declare the AP apocrypha in your game world.

I imagine that if Iron Gods is really successful then the amount of sci-fi in Pathfinder products will increase substantially.
They are running a business and they will follow where the dollar leads.

So, in the end, if you don't like the sound of something you shouldn't buy it, otherwise you will be sending Paizo the message that you do, since sales are interpreted as preferences.

I feel that the very best way to make your opinion known is to vote with your wallet. I don't have much of a gaming budget but I voted with my wallet and subscribed for Wrath of the Righteous because it is pretty damn close to what I have been clamoring for in published adventure material. I un-subscribed for Mummy's Mask because, while I am excited for it I just don't have much money to spend.

I say you should definitely unsubscribe if you feel that the product represents a direction you don't want to see the game go.

Actually, I wouldn't imagine this. If Iron Gods is successful, we will likely take that as endorsement for future APs that have really unusual and "traditionally risky" plots. The overwhelming acceptance folks had for "Rasputin Must Die!" is really what encouraged us that an entire science-fiction AP would be doable.

That said, Golarion is and shall remain a fantasy setting, and the bulk of what we do in the future will remain in that genre. We might drift out now and then, but that's not an excuse to change everything.

Iron Gods is a smash it.
A few years down the line, Distant Worlds AP is announced.
Mikaze faints, Drejk and I get drunk.
The OP dons his 'dwarvish' utilikilt, grabs his trusty axe and drives toward Seattle to explain some things.
Gets pulled over near Albaquerqe for speedin and yelling 'elven pansies' at officers.

Hi James. I hadnt realised that Iron Gods was intended to be a "science fiction AP". I'd expected it to be a fantasy AP with science fiction elements (ie the odd laser, mysterious artefact and killer robot). Am I reading too much into your throwaway description here and making a semantic mountain out of a molehill?

I have no real interest in numeria in general, but enjoy the way paizo surprise me from time to time. I wouldn't want to go in with wildly inaccurate preconceptions, though.

I asked the question to customer service last week what steps would need to be taken to drop the subscription at the end of mummy's mask and the answer I got from Erik Keith was that after paizo ships book 5 to then send in an email to customer service asking to end my adventure path subscription after book 6. Paizo can then set my subscription to end with mummy's mask and I won't get charged with iron gods.

Its a personal taste thing and for me iron gods offers no attraction. I hope to learn more about the next ap and if I like it I will re subscribe.

I'm glad I came along with subscription funds right at the end of an AP I don't even have the book for (WotR), in time for one that interests my longest-term player (MM), and one that interests me on deck (IG). I really lucked out in my opinion.

To those of you on the fence thinking about unsubscribing but who haven't done so yet or haven't decided, may I gently mention that this kind of thing has been in the FRPG genre since the very beginning. Barrier Peaks may be one module, but there have always been a LOT more elements of sci-fi than most remember, whether it be the nuclear disaster of Blackmoor all the way to the spaceport in Waterdeep and Rafael, the nuclear physicist immortal of the Shadow Elves. Obviously I wouldn't want to talk you into something you don't want, but there is some serious 'old-school' elements in the offing imo...just ones that many have forgotten about. =)

Iron Gods will be very much a "fantasy meets sci-fi" adventure path. If you're familiar with Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, you know about how much sci-fi will be in there.

If you're not a fan of Numeria, this might be a good AP for you to skip... but I do hope you check it out anyway since, as you say, we can surprise you from time to time.

Yeah - I wont skip it (I have zero interest in "deepest, darkest africa" stories yet loved Serpent's Skull. Similarly Legacy of Fire and Skulls and Shackles - you have a great talent for capturing the "feel" of a genre, I think).

I get a huge amount out of the APs regardless of whether I ever use them or not. The rare times I'm disappointed are generally when I go in with a strong (but incorrect) idea about what to expect.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Personally I can't get enough of the AP's - any setting - the stories are fantastic and (personally) it's easier to modify an adventure framework to fit what *I* want than it is to create an entirely new adventure.

My only regret at this point is not owning all of them.

If money isn't too much of an issue, it would be worth keeping the subscription, and then selling on the books themselves if you end up not interested. That way, should you change your mind, or find a few worthwhile tidbits here and there, you'll still have the PDFs and the Pathfinder Advantage discount. ;)

I would stand out on the balcony of my open air bedroom, my hands resting upon the parapet as I gazed longingly at the infinite stars shining in the night sky and my hair flows in the cool breeze.

And behind me I hear the door open. Distant Worlds is there, its shirt unbuttoned. Its hair is flowing in the breeze too even though it's in the bedroom.

I run my hand through my hair. "I was worried you would never come." A tentative step forward.

Distant Worlds approaches with less hesitation. "You knew I couldn't stay away."

We are face to cover now. I shudder as it steps into the moonlight, the scent of packing styrofoam hanging thick about it. "I knew."

Distant Worlds places its hands on my shoulders and draws near, but then pauses. "But what about Wrath of the Righteous? And Mummy's Mask, and the others?"

"Shhhhh..." I place a finger upon its lips. "Allow us this one night. This one night under the stars."

Distant Worlds pulls me closer.

I whisper in its ear. "Take me to the stars. And tell me that you'll keep me safe from the terrible secret of space."

Distant Worlds begins to open its cover.

The stars shine in the night sky, but upon this earth upon that night, there was a supernova.

It really isn't a big annoyance to me that this AP is coming out, because I won't have time to play them all anyway. And there are always interesting aricles in them that would still make it worth my while to buy them. I just worry that if everyone who prefer more traditional fantasy stories keep their subscriptions this AP will seem too big a success and generate more spin-offs than I'm comfortable with... That's all

There have been a few APs I've not been thrilled about (usually ones that play it more traditional fantasy or ones involving demons and such -- boring to me) but I've stayed subscribed. Can't be more thrilled with MM and IG, can't wait! Also I don't want to lose my Charter tag, I know it's stupid but... Well. I wonder how many people still are Charter AP subscribers?

Edit: And I know it's silly to keep subscribing for that reason even during APs that are less than appealing. But I do always find interesting ideas and enjoy reading the fiction and the bestiary stuff at the very least. I have all 150 issues of Dungeon and all 78 issues of the APs and I dunno, just seems silly to end it. It's like any other subscription -- some National Geographics don't have articles I'm thrilled about but I always come away feeling like I got something out of even the "weak" ones.

I am in general not a fan of getting sci-fi mixed in to my fantasy.
However, I have also only had a "very" small handful of dissapointments concerning Pathfinder material....far less than I experienced in over thirty years of playing D&D.

So despite reservations as to how things like Andriods and such will be handled....I will probably give just about anything Paizo does a chance before I decide to pass on it.

I would rather take the chance that I won't enjoy it....then miss something that totally amazes me.

Skipping out on this AP entirely to discourage similar ones isn't really the way to go since it's been explicitly stated to be a one-off. If the premise of it really puts you off in and of itself, that's another story, but unless you just absolutely cannot abide barbarians swinging axes at weirdo robots at any point ever, it might be worth sticking around for at least the first book, so you can get a handle on just how much it conforms to your fears/might pleasantly surprise you.

Though it does suggest that if an AP were set in the Mana Waste (and in Nex and Geb - possibly even a Mythic campaign) that that person would skip that as well because "guns are not appropriate for fantasy." Which is silly, really, as plenty of fantasy literature includes firearms in it.

Personally, I don't care one way or another if laser guns and robots are in a fantasy setting. Because it's what the characters can do that matters. If the lasguns and robots don't replace the magic? Then it's just additional flavor. And really, a lasgun could be considered akin to a Wand of Lightning Bolts with 50 charges... and a Robot equivalent to that magic barrel that turns into a lobster for exploring underwater, or a golem. Seriously, what is the difference between an Iron Golem and a Robot?

So don't describe a robot as a robot. Describe it as a golem with odd internal lightning bolts inside it when it is broken. Describe the lasgun as an oddly-shaped wand of lightning bolts. Describe a firearm as a wand with little charges that you put into the back-side to restore charges. Your science fiction element just became a different flavor of fantasy. And no one need know the difference.
