Ugh. Just saw my item. The formatting somehow got mangled, even though it looked ok when I previewed it. Its still readable, but ugly looking. :(

Miso! Oh so tasty!

And dangit, two items I like and find intriguing. Voting for the cheaper one, because the other is too expensive to be practical. (No, not THE expensive item. I haven't seen that one yet.)

Encountered another word count DQ; they used an incorrect abbreviation that reduced their word count by 2, which if corrected puts them over. :(

Is it one of those easy to make mistakes?

I'm horrible sometimes, despite spell check and proof-reading. Things do slip through unless you have a 2nd or 3rd pair of eyes to look at it.

So ... minor things I let slip. Unless you get that 'intentional' vibe. And in that case, I'd submit it for DQ's Axe.

And now, the previous talk of soup has me ahungered.

Thanks, all you darn food items!

Ewww, but before I go, my item vs. jetpack.

Unbiased. Must be unbiased.

(But now, at least, I've seen the jetpack!)

Hey, I just saw a torc that was pretty solid. Don't be hatin'.

If you're good, you're good.

But voting is hating, it's anger, hatred, suffering, so much suffering...

I don't subscribe to the Sith school of voting. If an item, like a torc, has problems with it, fine. But just because it's a torc or I'm sick of seeing it? No. None of the submitters formed a Sekret Torc Cabal to all submit torcs... they all worked independently to craft their very best idea. It's funny, even snarkable, that so many picked "torc" instead of a necklace or amulet as the wondrous item, but don't take points off just because it's a torc.

Edit: Ninja'd.

Jacob, I think I saw that one. Shame too, IIRC, since I think I actually sort of liked it. At least, I decided to upvote it in that pairing.

Oh, dear item, you are utterly ridiculous, though I have to admit I kind of like your base powers if I could strip away all your fluff. I've upvoted you several times, since you're always paired with something worse.

Ooh! Two shiny new items! One is definitely more innovative and gets the nod.

I hope to see the other one again and get a second opportunity to give it a proper vote up, though, as I think it is neat too.

Others may have mentioned this but, for future reference... if your item includes a DM/GM's note section, or an additional paragraph where you explain your design process, apologize for something about your item, or otherwise include commentary that is not part of the item description it will have have a very, very hard time getting a vote from me.

Marathon Voter Season 6, Marathon Voter Season 7, Star Voter Season 8

Item with cost and price the same... still better than what it's up against.

(actually other than the cost/price thing I rather like this items visual and effect)

Agreed. I wonder that myself when seeing certain comments.

On a related note, some of the comments seem to identify an item a little too specifically, or refer to groups of items with a particular theme or facet. Since that is a fact of the comment threads, it does make me wonder if there's a relation between how often an item is referred to, even indirectly, and its likelihood to advance.

I'm just guessing, but getting mentioned a lot might be counter-indicated with advancement.

Is it better to sneak in quietly, or does any mention is a good mention apply?

Marathon Voter Season 6, Marathon Voter Season 7, Star Voter Season 8

I would think that finding mentions of your item on this thread could generally be seen in a negative light (although just because somebody says "oh no another Torc!" is not that bad if you entered a torc, I seriously doubt anybody is voting against torcs on general principle) while if you find something that could be your item mentioned on the "Incessant Praise" thread, you should feel good about it.

I do not know if it will make much of difference in advancement though, some items on this thread (those that are blatant in their problems, or failed to follow the rules mostly) will certainly not advance... but lots of items that I see and think to my self "that's the one s/he was talking about on the ramble thread' have at least a decent chance to make it.

The package an item comes in isn't important. It's what the item does and how it's written that wins the vote. If I'm looking at the 37th torc I've seen this contest, then yes, it will illicit a groan from me and then maybe a snarky comment here. Then I read it from beginning to end and, if it's better than the item next to it, then it gets the vote. Simple as that.

Liberty's Edge Marathon Voter Season 6, Marathon Voter Season 7

Okay few oddball's a seen tonight.

So you got a foreign language dictionary, doesn't make the item's name any better.

Your missing a zero or that cost is way too low.

Including the word official does what to an entry?

Absolutely. It is very discouraging to be accused of being biased because I am on this thread. Please do not make an unfair assumption about how I vote just because someone else said "Ehmergerd Torcs!" I can only speak for myself, but I am sure many of those on this thread do the very same thing. Two items appear on the screen, I read one item first, I read the other item second. I think about which one is stronger, come to the forums while I wait for my 60 seconds to tick down and then I vote. Wash, rinse and repeat.

There are a LOT of people voting. Even if a small handful are biased against torcs, there are probably an equal number of people biased against blood items and helm items and glove items and and dream items and every other item that comes along.

SKR shared that each item last year had around 850 votes each. And STILL the judges will pick the Top 32 from all of the entries, regardless of where they end up in our list. So please relax, vote, have fun and if this thread bugs you, please stop reading it.

Quick analysis of slot use on 409 items that followed basic formatting guidelines*:

  • 201 slotless
  • 34 hands
  • 34 neck
  • 27 head
  • 25 shoulders
  • 15 chest
  • 13 wrists
  • 12 feet
  • 10 eyes
  • 10 belt
  • 7 headband
  • 7 body
  • 1 ring

Slotless breakdown:

  • 128 none
  • 63 -
  • 10 slotless

13 items (~3%) listed slots that do not exist, multiple slots, or had special cases that could identify them if listed.

* For ease of parsing, I only checked items that bolded the word Slot at the beginning of a line. This excluded about 67 items from my list of unique items seen so far. I included items where the slot was inappropriately singular or plural (ie. hand instead of hands), but excluded items where the slot was obvious to me but still invalid (ie. back instead of shoulders).

Hmm. Another new item. Good concept, but it didn't really gel. I have to say adding a testimonial to the end of your item description isn't going to convince me (or anyone else, probably) to vote for it. The work needs to stand on its own. That's why you don't get to talk up your offerings during the public voting time.

Okay, next year I need to not vote from my phone and keep track of unique items, etc.

Interesting that there are so many slotless items. Easiest to resolve though, I guess.
