Would I be heretic if I said I feel like this year we don't need a cull? I haven't seen the atrociously bad in a few days already...I wonder if they made a more adaptive system.
I get certain periods where items I'd rather not see again resurface for awhile, usually paired with others of their kind. One in particular keeps rearing its ugly head.
Saw my last minute SIAC item first up, cringing now - though at least I switched up the mechanics a little. Seen a few items that are great, many more blah, and a few that make my brain hurt.

The pain is thankfully temporary, if recurring and occasionally crippling...but you get used to it.

On the one hand, I agree with that sentiment, but on the other hand, removing the least voted means everyone will get a chance to see and vote on the more popular items.
It also gives SKR a little while to check that nothing got culled that he left in for us to enjoy :P

Yep, last year after a LONG term of voting on items they cut the bottom...I think 25%.

Hmm. Another new item. Good concept, but it didn't really gel. I have to say adding a testimonial to the end of your item description isn't going to convince me (or anyone else, probably) to vote for it. The work needs to stand on its own. That's why you don't get to talk up your offerings during the public voting time.
I feel sorry for the people who feel they needed to do this. If you did and you are reading this, please know that you don't need to apologize for entering the contest with an imperfect item. All the other items, they are imperfect too. You did great, you put your ideas to paper, hopefully you got the formatting, spelling and grammar, but if you didn't, it's okay. Only 32 people make it on to the next round, however, you will get the chance to discuss everything here very shortly and you really don't need to apologize to us, we're in the same boat you are in.

Sure, keep telling yourself that's what H.O.S.T. stands for.
I really want to vote for this item -- I'm a sucker for its kind of flavor. However, I just have to concede it's inferior to its competition. The formatting left requirements out and the author doesn't understand the difference between spell completion items and spell trigger items.

TELL US ABOUT THE TORCS GARRETT!!! :-)You'll never believe me... I only have six (1.25%) in my unique items list. Although I'd swear (anecdotally) that I've seen three of them at least 10 times each.
I believe you, I suspect that there aren't that many torcs in the mix at all. Just like last year's "filigree", I think those of us on the forums have simply seen and remembered them more clearly than the other types of items we have seen even more of. Please, torc is just a cool word. It's probably psychological.
An item that I cannot see any character ever purchasing. Even for the intended NPC niche seems like it would be overpriced and impractical, and its not the kind of NPC you expect to see in a game. So why?
