Ok, I'm really digging a few of the boot offerings this year.
Wow, that's cool, but SERIOUSLY underpriced.
Item with a good but not completely thought out idea gets the nod over the item that saves word count by putting more work on the GM.

Item 1: Well, I make combat more interesting because I can catch the shadow of other people and weaken them.
Item 2: Everybody who has to go through all your convoluted descriptions is going to be weakened.

Item 1: At least my author was thorough, you look like someone who never saw characters above 3rd level.
Me: GUYS!

Me: Item 1, you are a bit pricey, no? It seems the formulas were applied rather strictly, but your CMB bonus is a little too low for your level range... that is a lot of gold for something with such a high chance of failure.
Item 2: That is what she said.

Me: Hehe, ok, stop it.
Item 1: Well, I don't know about the CMB bonus, I never went to the testing dungeons.
Item 2: Wait, what? You are made by a theorycrafter?
Me: Yeah, seems the author eyeballed it. It's not a dealbreaker, but it's there.
Item 1: Shut up, Item 2! Not only are your prerequisites all messed up, you also are just a camping item. When will your oh-so-concise mechanics every see play? Never? Probably even less often.
Item 2: I am sorry that your author was too stupid to think outside the box, but that doesn't mean everyone has to suck as hard as you. I have been through actual playtesting! I have been places, seen things!
Me: Like what?
Item 1: The trashcan probably.
Me: Silence!
Item 2: If you must know, I participated in a session of the greatest AP of all time. And this oneshot where the players went to three different planes! And I was useful every time!
Me: Really? That's kinda cool. But nobody ever took you to the Elemental Plane of Fire, otherwise you'd not be here.
Item 1: OMG, he is right! Glaring oversight, mechanics-wise, I'd say.
Item 2: Damn, you are right. Still, playtested and concise vs. theorycrafted convoluted mess? 3rd level character my ass!
Me: I need to think, gimme a second guys.
Item 1: Wait, before you go all zen on us, did you see that his effect doesn't match his CL?
Item 2: Grasping at straws, are we? Even I know that Grapple involves CMB vs. CMD, as stated in the rules - unlike your author. Look at you, filled with unnecessary tidbits just to go all the way up to 299 words? Fattie!
Me: Would you guys shut up? I am trying to make a decision here!
Item 1: He started it.
Item 2: Yeah, because he just sucks.
Me: Gnnnnrrrrr.

Alright, time for a mini-rant.
TLDR: Please be as general as possible when describing items anywhere on the messageboards. We want people to feel good about this contest.
Good rant.
This is my first year of RPG Superstar, but I worked on my item from August. Despite all that time, I still may have made mistakes in the item (I've yet to see my item to confirm how many mistakes I may have made.)
Making items is a complex interplay between:
- Well written English.
- Conform to rules in aura, school, Requirements, etc.
- Concise and clear rules.
- Well balanced rules.
- Correctly priced at the threshold of "always buy" to "rarely buy" price.
I know what is needed, but how well did I make an item that followed what I know I needed? It isn't easy. Which is why we are all seeing items we think "that sucks" but it still probably had a great deal of thought put into it.
Approaching 1000 votes and still haven't seen my item ;-(

Aw. New item. A bit of a SAK, but had some nice writing, with good word choice. But...
Sadly, it probably should technically be DQ'd (though I'll let someone else report it...), which is frustrating. I still voted for it despite that, because I really dislike the paired item.
A couple of items make me sad. The writing is good, the flavor is cool but it's an item that just wouldn't really be used by an adventurer. Ultimately Pathfinder is about heroes and their adventures. While an adventurer may have collected many magical items that assist in the mundane portion of their lives, the items that are written about in stories are the ones that help them kill monsters or overcome challenges when adventuring. A magic threshing machine that increases crop yield (not a real item, I just made this up) is not what I am looking for in RPGSS. A magical dental chair that allows me to fill people's teeth faster and without novocaine (see previous made up item note) is neat but not RPGSS worthy and imho a designer that has missed the point of the competition.
While I sort of am inclined to agree with you, doesn't the current Adventure Path make use of downtime rules? I know that was a chunk of Ultimate Campaign, so obviously there's some call for them and thus items that could be part of that.
Similarly, they could easily be incorporated into Kingmaker, which I think is still one of the more popular APs.

That would be racist, yes. That would also be disqualified, because it's a weapon and not a wondrous item.
Item switches into a different item mid-paragraph. But I have some sympathy for that, since I caught similar things in mine just before submitting it -- leftover traces of an earlier iteration. Check, check, and re-check!

Anyone else combining the items in your head to make amusing characters or am I weird.
With the proper combo of items I can have 2 heads with 2 grills and silver tongues and receive very different bonuses from each head. I just can't remember if I have a slot free to make one float around.
Kudos to some outside the box thinking this year guys...

So the mechanical benefits you gave this item are ho-hum, but I would love to have it just for the incidental side effect you led off with, which is awesome.
Or would, if it were something I could wear in a social situation.
