Completely nonsensical if they filmed this in Iceland of all places!

Hopefully in the first movie they use monsters that are from the Monsters Manual so that any players who come to the game via the movie don’t feel overwhelmed by the need of too many books if they want to recreate the things they saw.

Took me more than a bit of digging through my books before I remembered that the Frost Worm is in Wildemount

Really? I remember my encounter thanks to Monstrous Compendium...

It isn’t a matter of needing to remember an encounter with the creature. The Monstrous Compendium was technically 5 editions ago. The Frost Worm may well have been in the 3.0/3.5 MM but I don’t have them anymore so I can’t check them. 4e released 3 Monster Manuals and a Monster Vault - neither of which contained a Frost Worm. Didn’t see one in Essentials either. In 5e the Frost Worm didn’t appear in the “Monster’s Manual”, “Volo’s Guide to Monsters” or “Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes.” It doesn’t even appear in the “Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden” book where it would make the most sense, it appears in the Critical Role Setting book “Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount”

My point was that I hope they use monsters in the current editions MM. The idea being that it’s be great if a group of kids inspired by the movie to play won’t have to go hunting for the stat blocks of a monster they think is cool

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Ah. Well I get wanting to use current MM so players don't have to search.

But SLIGHT correction, Monstrous Compendium was 2nd edition...

Pathfinder Rulebook, Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

Nope no correction needed Monstrous Compendium certainly was 2nd Edition and I never claimed otherwise.

Followed by 2nd Revised (1), 3.X (2) 4e (3), Essentials (4) and 5th Edition (5)

I should correct myself in say it's NOT 5 editions ago if you're counting just from 5 to 2...

No it is, all 5 are accounted for in the previous message. It’s actually 6 but I combined 3.0 and 3.5 in my count.

The 2e revised or Player Options version featured an edition of the Monstrous Manual with revised and updated stat blocks of the versions from the Monstrous Compendium. The 3.0 Monster Manual featured the new 3.0 encounter math. The 3.5 Monster Manual featured revisions and recalibrations from the 3.0 version. The 4e Monster Manual featured the 4e encounter math. Essentials featured a streamlined and revised version of 4e encounter math and 5e featured the newest and most current iteration.

You're basically saying that 5e is one edition ago, when it is the current edition. Saying 5e is one edition ago is like saying today is one day ago. It's a strange way to track things.

1 person marked this as a favorite.
Pathfinder Rulebook, Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

No I'm not saying that 5e was an edition ago. I am saying that it is a distinct publication edition of which there have been six since the 2nd edition Monstrous Compendium.

5 to Essentials (1 edition ago) Essentials to 4 (2 editions ago) 4 to 3.5 (3 editions ago) 3.5 to 3.0 (4 editions ago) 3.0 to 2nd Revised(5 editions ago) 2nd Revised to 2nd(6 editions ago)

So not only am I not saying what you just said I'm saying, I rounded down in my count.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

That's not rounding. This is rounding:
2e ---> Step 1 ---> 3.xe ---> Step 2 ---> 4e ---> Step 3 --->5e = Three Steps
QED

It's also the objectively correct answer.

Additionally, there's no main cast filming in Iceland so Frost Worm seems an unlikely candidate but maybe it'll get mentioned?

I really would like to see a gythanki foe, though I'm not thinking it likely. I think that would be some cool CGI/live-action blend

Not an objectively correct answer because it ignores facts.

Heh, probably should throw in some 'monsterly' nominees myself...

While I might put my vote in for the usual tentacled aberrations to make an appearance, I do gotta admits that other movies have been using them quite a bit too [not limited to things like Star Wars: The Forces Awakens, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchises, Lord of the Rings... with the entryway to Moria, King Kong: Skull Island, etc.].

In light of that, I'd throw in my own nomination for Carrion Crawlers instead [they do kinda got 'tentacly' feelers in some depictions though...].

PS. If they don't go with Mindflayers, mebbe they could go with Grells for the 'tentacly' [plus them 'brainy' & 'beaky'] representations? ;p

Just occurred to me...another possible source of creatures that they might just pull from:

Monsters & Creatures and Beasts & Behemoths from their Young Adventurer's Guides.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Well, if they feature monsters not in core, they may just have a supplement tied into the movie that contains them.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

That would be my guess too, Kahnya. I mean if they have something like that, which I'm assuming they would.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The release date is far enough out that certainly there could be some sort of HC and other tie-ins in the works.

Indeed.

Wizards of the Coast is Now a Division of Hasbro, Will Lead Digital Licensing Initiatives

HotC wrote:

Cocks explained that the growth of the new Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming division will be powered by five engines: tabletop innovation with Magic and D&D, digital versions of Magic and D&D, a new IP pipeline, new sales channels, and digital licensing....

For the third engine, Cocks said that Wizards is “building a robust new IP pipeline, hiring key talent from Ubisoft, BioWare, Warner Brothers, and Disney, to explore fantasy-adjacent genres like sci-fi, action, horror, and collectibles.”

So my 'prediction' of a HC tie-in for the movie was rather tepid in light of this.^

:D

Cool, thanks for linking us to an article we already discussed when it came out in February. This however is about the production arm of Wizards of the Coast creating a digital distribution pipeline for their games and in no way presented evidence six months ago that substantiates your current speculation that Paramount and Hasbro are coordinating to publish a game supplement for the film.

So Chris Pines has been saying

The way that I've been describing it, it's like Game of Thrones mixed with a little Princess Bride, just a smidge of Holy Grail

At the very least it sounds like he had fun making it

So current info is

Release: March 3rd 2023
title: Dungeons & Dragons; Honor among Thieves

Plot is

Quote:
An ex-Harper turned thief escapes from prison with his partner, a female barbarian, and reunites with a no-talent wizard and a druid new to their team in an effort to rob the cheating conman who stole all their loot from the heist that landed them behind bars, and used it to install himself as the Lord of Neverwinter. Only the traitor is allied with a powerful Red Wizard who has something far more sinister in store.

Staring: Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Hugh Grant, Regé-Jean Page.

So no paladins are involved huh? Still I like the new title.

It's also interesting that it's set in the Forgotten Realms, but they're going with Dungeons & Dragons. In the short term, that makes sense, since D&D is way better known of a brand, but in the long term, if they start making a DNDCU with lots of successful movies, and want to branch out to other campaign settings, it's potentially messy branding to differentiate. But that's likely a good problem for them to have to figure out if things go that way.

Branding for D&D has been a problem, movie wise at least.

A new poster is showed, and an intellect devourer appears, but this is from a picture by Pathfinder/Paizo.

I wouldn't like a lawsuit, but this "mistake" could be used to indirectly promote Pahtfinder.

First character images.

Looks like Hugh Grant gets the assignment: cheesy fun seems to be the tone they are going for.

First poster!

Including, erm, pre-existing PATHFINDER stock art of an intellect devourer.

I'm sure that's going to be fine.

What specific product is the intellect devourer from?

Traaaaaailer!

Slightly cheesy but way better than I was expecting. Seeing an owlbear tearing up a band of dudes is entertaining and dragons with their correct breath weapons is fun.

It's close to the picture in the 1E Bestiary, but not quite identical.

I thought the trailer was excellent - considering how low my expectations were for the movie, this might be the surprise gem of all SDCC.

They really (and intelligently) went out of the way to include as much D&D stuff as possible. Not only was there an owlbear and black dragon with accurate breath weapon, but gelatinous cube, displacer beast, mimic, shield spell (and possibly a protection from energy spell as well) giant spiders, wildhsaping druid, and most importantly, mocking the bard's usefulness.

It's also very cool to see the city of - I assume - Neverwinter on-screen for the first time, not to mention Red Wizards of Thay. A shame Ed Greenwood gets to see his creation in live-action for the first time (55 years after he created it!) the same week he lost his wife :(

Has anyone heard whether he got to see any of this before the trailer came out? It would have been a friendly thing to do.

Possibly. But I know people who've been producers on a project that they wrote and they only got to see the trailer on the same day as everybody else.

Does not look as bad as I feared. Not sure it will be good, but I will be more than happy if it is schlocky fun instead of just bad.
