Hopefully in the first movie they use monsters that are from the Monsters Manual so that any players who come to the game via the movie don’t feel overwhelmed by the need of too many books if they want to recreate the things they saw.
Took me more than a bit of digging through my books before I remembered that the Frost Worm is in Wildemount

Really? I remember my encounter thanks to Monstrous Compendium...
It isn’t a matter of needing to remember an encounter with the creature. The Monstrous Compendium was technically 5 editions ago. The Frost Worm may well have been in the 3.0/3.5 MM but I don’t have them anymore so I can’t check them. 4e released 3 Monster Manuals and a Monster Vault - neither of which contained a Frost Worm. Didn’t see one in Essentials either. In 5e the Frost Worm didn’t appear in the “Monster’s Manual”, “Volo’s Guide to Monsters” or “Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes.” It doesn’t even appear in the “Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden” book where it would make the most sense, it appears in the Critical Role Setting book “Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount”
My point was that I hope they use monsters in the current editions MM. The idea being that it’s be great if a group of kids inspired by the movie to play won’t have to go hunting for the stat blocks of a monster they think is cool

I should correct myself in say it's NOT 5 editions ago if you're counting just from 5 to 2...
No it is, all 5 are accounted for in the previous message. It’s actually 6 but I combined 3.0 and 3.5 in my count.
The 2e revised or Player Options version featured an edition of the Monstrous Manual with revised and updated stat blocks of the versions from the Monstrous Compendium. The 3.0 Monster Manual featured the new 3.0 encounter math. The 3.5 Monster Manual featured revisions and recalibrations from the 3.0 version. The 4e Monster Manual featured the 4e encounter math. Essentials featured a streamlined and revised version of 4e encounter math and 5e featured the newest and most current iteration.

No I'm not saying that 5e was an edition ago. I am saying that it is a distinct publication edition of which there have been six since the 2nd edition Monstrous Compendium.
5 to Essentials (1 edition ago) Essentials to 4 (2 editions ago) 4 to 3.5 (3 editions ago) 3.5 to 3.0 (4 editions ago) 3.0 to 2nd Revised(5 editions ago) 2nd Revised to 2nd(6 editions ago)
So not only am I not saying what you just said I'm saying, I rounded down in my count.

That's not rounding. This is rounding:
2e ---> Step 1 ---> 3.xe ---> Step 2 ---> 4e ---> Step 3 --->5e = Three Steps
QEDIt's also the objectively correct answer.
Additionally, there's no main cast filming in Iceland so Frost Worm seems an unlikely candidate but maybe it'll get mentioned?
Not an objectively correct answer because it ignores facts.

Heh, probably should throw in some 'monsterly' nominees myself...
While I might put my vote in for the usual tentacled aberrations to make an appearance, I do gotta admits that other movies have been using them quite a bit too [not limited to things like Star Wars: The Forces Awakens, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchises, Lord of the Rings... with the entryway to Moria, King Kong: Skull Island, etc.].
In light of that, I'd throw in my own nomination for Carrion Crawlers instead [they do kinda got 'tentacly' feelers in some depictions though...].
PS. If they don't go with Mindflayers, mebbe they could go with Grells for the 'tentacly' [plus them 'brainy' & 'beaky'] representations? ;p

Just occurred to me...another possible source of creatures that they might just pull from:
Monsters & Creatures and Beasts & Behemoths from their Young Adventurer's Guides.

Looks like they're going all in:
Wizards of the Coast is Now a Division of Hasbro, Will Lead Digital Licensing Initiatives
Cocks explained that the growth of the new Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming division will be powered by five engines: tabletop innovation with Magic and D&D, digital versions of Magic and D&D, a new IP pipeline, new sales channels, and digital licensing....
For the third engine, Cocks said that Wizards is “building a robust new IP pipeline, hiring key talent from Ubisoft, BioWare, Warner Brothers, and Disney, to explore fantasy-adjacent genres like sci-fi, action, horror, and collectibles.”
So my 'prediction' of a HC tie-in for the movie was rather tepid in light of this.^

Cool, thanks for linking us to an article we already discussed when it came out in February. This however is about the production arm of Wizards of the Coast creating a digital distribution pipeline for their games and in no way presented evidence six months ago that substantiates your current speculation that Paramount and Hasbro are coordinating to publish a game supplement for the film.

Well.... +1 for consistency* over the past seven months.
Totally twice-missed points aside, there is a dribble of hype with this interview here from last week:
Justice Smith Calls Upcoming 'Dungeons & Dragons' Movie "Action-Packed, Thrilling, Funny as Hell"
* That's all I can give you there. But hey! At least it's something.

It's also interesting that it's set in the Forgotten Realms, but they're going with Dungeons & Dragons. In the short term, that makes sense, since D&D is way better known of a brand, but in the long term, if they start making a DNDCU with lots of successful movies, and want to branch out to other campaign settings, it's potentially messy branding to differentiate. But that's likely a good problem for them to have to figure out if things go that way.

I thought the trailer was excellent - considering how low my expectations were for the movie, this might be the surprise gem of all SDCC.
They really (and intelligently) went out of the way to include as much D&D stuff as possible. Not only was there an owlbear and black dragon with accurate breath weapon, but gelatinous cube, displacer beast, mimic, shield spell (and possibly a protection from energy spell as well) giant spiders, wildhsaping druid, and most importantly, mocking the bard's usefulness.

It's also very cool to see the city of - I assume - Neverwinter on-screen for the first time, not to mention Red Wizards of Thay. A shame Ed Greenwood gets to see his creation in live-action for the first time (55 years after he created it!) the same week he lost his wife :(
Has anyone heard whether he got to see any of this before the trailer came out? It would have been a friendly thing to do.
