I hear you, MeanDM. Having a Save or Sleep mod has been a huge help in Survival Mode.
I have to do things a lot slower because I still find that I don't deal as much damage as I should per the description of the new Survival Mode, but I'm adapting. I do one or two short-term goals, then take a break. I can't tackle as many missions at once like I do in Normal Mode. (No Fast Travel is half of the reason for that.)
I'm finding fewer viable builds for Survival Mode. It's whittled me down from 8 characters to about 4. INT is king, along with Stealth.
And with the E3 news about the revamped Skyrim, I found myself actually missing my old Fallout: New Vegas games. Different builds actually meant more in NV than they do in this game because there were more rp elements to the campaign.
Far Harbor comes closer to that than the rest of Fallout 4 imo.
The game wasn't designed for Survival Mode as it now exists. Most POIs don't have a source of water, dirty or purified (Cambridge Police Station; the Railroad Hideout; etc.), which would have only made sense to ensure these as viable camps, even if only to resupply before heading on.
Oh well. PS4 mods should be out soon! And hopefully the experience will be smoother with the XBone fiasco working out the kinks.
Be safe out there!

Nah, Otherwhere, yer fine.
FO4 --> Stellaris (which lasted about 3 weeks) --> Hearts of Iron 4 at my first ever attempt with the Empire of Japan. :)

I had some more success last night. I am up to 21st level, and still feel like a glass cannon. But I finally started wearing a robot helmet stripped from a Rust something or other. I tried the quest to get Valentine, and got swarmed in the second room where there are multiple Trigger Men when Ada couldn't get down the stairs....

Honestly, Survival mode hasn't given me much difficulty (granted, I have mods for fast travel along supply lines, and quick saves). All the overland travel means I kill plenty of animals, so I'm never short on meat for food, and haven't had much of a problem with water either. Overseer's Guardian is obliterating my enemies in no time (even the mirelurk queen at the Castle took less than a full magazine). And two ranks in Strong Back plus Ada as a companion means I don't have much of a problem with encumbrance either.
I'm considering abandoning that character, and trying Survival with maxed Luck and Charisma, just for kicks.

In other news, went back to my first character, a James Bond-style high-Charisma stealth/sniper build, to play through Far Harbor. Almost at level 72, IIRC, and recently got a Freezing Gatling Laser as a legendary drop! Used console commands to move perks out of Gun Fu (because I misunderstood how it worked), and started working on my Heavy Weapons skill. And here I was, looking for a good boss weapon that wouldn't blow me up in close quarters. Turns out Deliverer stops cutting it at high levels, even with max sneak attack perks; probably about 20 rounds to kill a Super Mutant Overlord, and ain't nobody got time for that!

With the nerf to the Robotics Expert perk (which, granted, was a bit OP with being able to hack from range), I am getting murdered on Survival Mode now that Automatron is active. :(
Both my full Survival Mode (modded) characters are level 23. I just captured The Castle with one, no problem. Mines do a lot more damage to the Mirelurk Queen, and it took only 6 + 1 bottlecap mine to insta-gib her.
My pistol-build character got The Gainer, but is having a rough time because he has neither the INT nor the CHA to grab the good Survival Mode perks in those trees, and pistols do require getting up closer than rifles do for any kind of good ranged attack. I may need to abandon him as not really viable for this Mode.
My CHA/INT-based guy, Hannibal (after The A-Team, not the cannibal), is faring much better - able to Scrap more, and establish supply lines, plus the Robotics perk.
I barely touch my non-Survival toons any more, which surprises me.

IMHO there are only two MAIN DLCs and the rest are "partial" DLCs. Far Harbor is very good. I also like Automatron and the Wasteland Workshop ones. The next big (and last) DLC will be Nuka World. If you can accept that Fallout 4 has NOTHING to do with Fallout New Vegas, but is a continuation of Fallout 3, then you will be doing good. The base game runs for around $50 and the DLC pack is another $50. IMHO it is worth the money. I have spend over... ~checks Steam~ 500 hours playing it and I am not done with the game. I think I have gotten my moneys worth. I would suggest buying the DLc pack instead of them individually.
Edit - Fallout 4 is not a perfect game by any means. I think that they put too much on settlement building and the AI can be a bit... wonky. Some of the story has you scratching your head and going WTF?!? The game looses a bit of its focus at the 1/3 mark and does not really regain it. But lets be honest. This is BETHESDA that we are talking about. The main game is not the main interest of the game, but the exploration and side quests. Despite that, I would recommend it.

My biggest issue is the dialogue system. It always has four choices, regardless of whether less or more are needed and the lines always sound very similar, sometimes even just blatantly worded in different ways. It very much feels like you're being pushed down a path regardless of your dialogue choices.
The voiced protagonist doesn't help either and can easily make very different characters feel the same. For instance, I found playing a bad guy to be very difficult. One minute I would be saying something horrible to someone, and the next I would be talking in a very cheery and optimistic way.
Thankfully Todd Howard has noted that the dialogue system wasn't very good so there's hope for future games!
Finally I just want to clarify that despite all of these issues, I loved Fallout 4. There are a few (admittedly very irritating) problems with the game but if you can get past them or accept them, it's a very fun game.
I think we've got until probably the end of August for all of the DLC to be released. Though I have no idea if or when they'll release a GOTY type edition.

I really enjoy Fallout 4 but I have to say, there is one thing that has irritated me above all else. Water Content is basically non-existent. Sure, there are things above and below the waves, but there is just no reason to explore. No interesting items, no treasure, no markers. It's said when the game that takes place in Las Vegas has more interesting water-based content than the game taking place in Boston.

I've heard there's the remnants of an underwater vault in the game's files, with cut content supposedly suggesting that the submarine was originally intended to be used to get to and from it.
I was hoping they'd use it for dlc, but that's looking unlikely.

Sorry to hear that the PS4 mods won't be happening yet.
Strange considering that PS4 represents the majority of their sales. But the the technical issues of only having the CK on PC and trying to translate that over to the proprietary PS4 format on sound and graphics is proving to be too difficult atm.
At least you have the dlc packages to play with!

Yeah, I was reading about the coding issues. Also that the size limit for PS4 mods will only be 900mb, compared to 2gb on X1. I honestly don't care about big content mods though, I really just want new outfits and a "ballistic weave most clothes" and "wear armour pieces over most clothes" patch.
Speaking of dlc content, has anyone used the manufacturing stuff from contraptions? It seems pretty worthless from my experiments.

Trying an Idiot Savant character, with 3 Intelligence and the Party Girl perks to drop it by 2 when I feel like it. It's very random.
On the other hand, the sound effects for it make me want to track down BethSoft staff and say "Really? You thought that was a good idea?". Just wow.
Yeah - I don't use that perk because I found it both annoying and in pretty poor taste. Plus, do people really find they need the accelerated XP? I've had no problem gaining levels without having a high INT character.
On a playthru front: Hannibal has now finished Automatron, so I feel I can relax a little. I did the alternate path to confront her, making sure my Hacking skill was at Master so I could take the elevator down and do that approach, avoiding the whole robo-carnage madness that was deadly in vanilla Normal Mode.

Weirdly, the randomized fetch quests from the BoS also take advantage of Far Harbor. I got a "clean out the Commonwealth" quest at a place called Beaver Lanes. I went way northeast on the map and couldn't find it, only to stumble into the beginnings of the Far Harbor questline. And it turns out that Beaver Lanes was in Far Harbor.

Bethesda "borrowed" a NEW VEGAS mod's storyline for a FAR HARBOR quest. Nothing illegal about that, as Bethesda automatically own everything from fan-created FALLOUT mods. But they didn't credit the creators of AUTUMN LEAVES or acknowledge it in any way, despite their questline using near-identical characters, events and locations. Disappointing behaviour.

Yes very disappointing when you figure that Besthesdla is cracking down on people taking PC mods and posting them on Xbox under there name for credit not giving the original Maker on PC credit.

I got kind of bored with my first Survival character, since I built her to counter the disadvantages of Survival (Life Giver, Armorer, Strong Back, etc.). She rarely encountered any difficulty with food, water, or rest. Of course, I added mods to allow saving without beds, and to allow fast travel between connected settlements.
I started a new character playing right into the weaknesses of Survival. 1 Strength, 1 Endurance. Maxed out Charisma, to take advantage of all the pacification perks, with a secondary focus on science stuff and crit perks. We'll see how that goes...

INT and CHA go a long way in Survival Mode.
My current character, Hannibal, is level 48 - the highest I've gone with any so far - and I still haven't been to the Glowing Sea or Far Harbor.
Note: Robotics Expert isn't as useful as it used to be now that you can't Hack from distance. Sentry Bots will still destroy you before you can hack them. (I've entered the Hack menu, but as soon as I complete I get the death animation because they hit me once during that slowed time/Vats-esque thing that happens when you hack them.)

Thanks to the latest DLC, I finally found Cait. Turns out she hit a glitch in Trinity Towers - when I rescued Strong, I had him serve as my companion and sent Cait back to Red Rocket. Apparently, she had difficulty navigating the outside elevator platforms and was stuck in a running animation and wouldn't respond when I talked to her (I would just get a "this person is busy" indication).
Getting her out took some work. I attacked her until she turned hostile, and then took the elevator out thinking that would break her out of the glitch. Instead, she managed to find a way to the inaccessible areas where the super mutants appear and then got stuck there (with no way to get to her). I reloaded, and tried again, this time turning her hostile and getting her to chase me, and then hitting her with my weapon to drive her on to the elevator platforms and then down to the portion of the tower accessible from the street.
After that, she found her way to the clean room in the vault, where I found her and re-companioned her!

I also still don't understand that love of Obsidian, I thought NV was kind of blah.
Vastly superior writing, dialogue, characterisation and companion characters coupled with a much more reactive world, much greater freedom to go and do things your way and a multitude of ways to resolve each quest (many of them not involving violence). NEW VEGAS is a proper roleplaying game, FALLOUT 3 is an action game with some roleplaying moments and FALLOUT 4 is a straight-up FPS with occasional dialogue choices. Fun, but nowhere near as deep as FALLOUT 1, 2 or NEW VEGAS (all created by the same people).
NEW VEGAS's biggest problems were an underwhelming and confusing start compared to either of the Bethesda games and of course the release bugs, although they were resolved pretty quickly (and FALLOUT 3 and 4 were hardly bug-free either).

Much better DLC as well (I know people have their individual NV DLCs which they don't like, but I thought they were all fun in their own ways, and I liked the links among them - it was fun to find evidence that a character from one DLC had passed through the location of another).

How is everyone enjoying Raider (Nuka) World?
I've only played past the Gauntlet, and met the leaders.
I like Mags for style, but her goal is so petty it seems gauche. Besides, one who loves only money can be bought by an enemy.
The Pack leader (Conrad? I met him right before dashing out to work, so not the best memory moment.) I dislike personally, but I feel like he's the only reliable one. He seems like the type that will honour his end of an alliance as long as you give him a fair portion.
Amusingly, although the character I took in (my automatic gunner) has the personality to try the job, she has very little Charisma... So she's not an inspirational speaker.

Porter Gage, there's no way I'm going to trust you and your second in command lead from behind bs. Clearly, you're going to turn on me and become the endboss, and I want you to know that the first opportunity I get, I'm going to stab you in the head...

I'm quite enjoying the Nuka World dlc. I love the Disciples armor!
I'm probably going to start a whole new character and head over there asap
so I can develop them as they would have (i.e., evil warlord) if this had been an option in the base game.
I just dread needing to go thru the Automatron stuff that kicks in. That battle in the Mechanist's Lair is brutal - even more so on Survival Mode.
