Toss-up between 1E incantatrix and 1E deathmaster. Both from Dragon magazine. I think incantatrix was reprised for 3.5, but the deathmaster moulders still in a dank 1E grave, when classes had titles at each level... At 4th level, the deathmaster is a Necropolite!
It was updated to 3.5 and appears in Paizo's amazing Dragon Compendium.

[tangent, not an entry!] A 3.X version of the Death Master is available in the Dragon Compendium. It's not quite as flavorful as Lakofka's original, IMO, but upgraded pretty nicely rule-wise. [/tangent]

Thanks for the heads-up guys. I'll look out for the Dragon Compendium... Do you know if it has the non-lawful-good paladins in it? (Myrikhan, Fantra, Illrigger, Arrikhan, Garath, Lyan and Paremander/yr?)

I think I'd like to try the Hound Master from this year's RPG Superstar, or (at the risk of sounding like I'm pandering) the Pack Hunter from The Secrets of Tactical Archetypes.
Pander on!
Check out the latest Pathways for more rules about the Pack Hunter too. It provides rules for spell-less pack hunters to get around the thorny issue of the wolves being useless against flying enemies. One is quite silly, and the other is just an Air Walk spell-like ability.
The other bit for the class is guidelines and rules for alternative animals other than wolves. I believe the examples are Falcon and Deionychus. Your GM picks the bonus feats though!

I wanted to add, as a prestige class, Yscar Lycanthrope from AEG. Its terribly broken, but I think it would be a blast to play.
(Instead of transforming as a normal lycanthrope, at 3rd level of the prc you can turn into an exact copy of any type of animal you have ever touched, though only the first of each animal you have ever touched and you can do that with magical beasts as well, and at 4th you can combine attributes from various creatures. You gain all special qualities and special attacks as well (and can mix and match to your heart's content.) And you can get into the class easily.
I would also point out that at night you get double your hps and total invulnerability to all forms of harm save cold iron as part of being a lycanthrope, but you probably got that from one of the feats you used to enter the prc. )
/sigh, That would've been an amazing book if it had been delivered on time (rather than 3 - 4 years late), had followed either the 3.0 or the 3.5 ruleset instead of being a bad hodge podge of both, and been even somewhat balanced.

Check out Wayfinder #6. It has a Wolf Shifter class in it which sounds like it'd be up your alley. It's a shapeshifting barbarian, IIRC. Rite added some feats for them in 101 Renegade Feats.

#6? I only see up to number 5 in the free downloads section, did they start charging?
Also, I have to give it up to the taskshaper as well, I thoroughly enjoy reading over that (though I haven't had an opportunity to play as / with one yet).

[tangent spoilered]
Nope. Those, as far as I know, never got updated.
Green Ronin's Book of the Righteous has a 'Holy Warrior' class for 3.X that allows for unique 'Paladins' of any alignment or diety (and a standalone Unholy Warrior book includes some options strictly for the bad-guys). Number one with a bullet, IMO.
Monte's Arcana Unearthed as the Champion class, which also serves as a sort of 'Paladin of a Concept/Philosophy' or 'Domain Paladin.' (Champion of Life, Champion of Knowledge, etc.) Weak, IMO.
And there's the Paladins of Freedom, Tyranny and Slaughter, from the Unearthed Arcana (which can be found online at the SRD). Serviceable, and easiest to plug-n-play or use as templates to rebuild for Pathfinder use.
All of them are modeled to balance with the 3.5 Paladin, and might benefit from a bit of a touch-up to bring them on par with the Pathfinder Paladin.

Dragon #310 has variant paladins for those alignments not covered in UA. Written by James Jacobs even!

I would love to try your 101 New Skill Uses so it would not be prudent of you to give it to me for free.
Thank you for the opportunity to win a product, though. I will definitely be participating in this thread every day.

Without a doubt, I would like to play a psionicist. Unfortunately, that class has never been balanced or playable. The first few books from Dark Sun truly captured my interest with the mind-bender and I had hoped that after 20+ years someone would have figured out how to add this class to the game.
Sad days.

Most of the time I've seen people say psionics isn't balanced (in 3.5 or in Pathfinder) it's because they're doing something wrong, either they're not enforcing the limit of power points per power (ie. manifester level) or they're having too few encounters per day.
I'd really encourage you to go back and read over the psionics, especially the dream scarred press stuff which I'm finding very nicely done (and as I said, I'm currently playing to, though I don't have tons of experience with either, yet).

3.5 had a ton of broken abilities and abilities that were either useless or way over the top. As for Dreamscarred, I have heard good things about their psionic material. Maybe this Christmas I convince someone to buy me their basic psionic book and the 101 New Skill Uses from Rite.

While it's not much of a 'teamwork' story, my Warforged Shaper would often use his astral constructs to provide flanking oportunities for his allies.
Oh, and there's the 'tandem Tensor's trick.' Caster A sits on Disk B, Caster B sits on Disk A. Caster A pushes disk A as far away as he can, while Caster B makes disk B come closer. As a result, they fly in formation. :-)

I guess no one likes working together :(
I do! I just posted the story on the Facebook giveaway page instead of here. But since it's on a campaign journal here on Paizo, I guess a link is in order!

I will respond only this last time as I do not want to derail this important thread, but to answer your question...
Biofeedback - DR 2/- for 1 min per level at first level.
Daze, Psionic - ability to daze an 8HD creature at first level.
Mind Thrust (18 stat psion) - 4d10 damage with a DC of 17 at first level.
Entangling Ectoplasm - ranged touch (easiest in game), -2 attack, -4 dex, any spell cast is 15+DC concentration check for 5 rounds in any environment at first level. Unable to break once the person is hit with it.
As a side note, Entangle from the druid's first level spell is an AoE - which can cause issues for friendlies, has a save or check to break free every round, and can only be used outside where there is a reasonable amount of vegetation.
Let's move on please as I am no longer going to defend a position so adamantly defended in other posts :/ That is just 4 first level abilities. The book is broke.

1 person marked this as a favorite. |
My party was traveling by river to visit an NPC they had met in a remote location, needing to ask him some new questions. On their previous exploration they had been ambushed by gnoll archers, who retreated once the party reached the riverbank.
Seeming like an excellent time for payback, I ambushed them again. The player of the bard inquired as to how far away they were, and if it was less than 440ft. Not understanding the question, I answer the affirmative.
The bard then reminds me that the party had leveled since the last time, casting his new dimension door spell to put the fighter and cleric directly behind the archers.
It was a brief, ugly comeuppance.

Every Weekday Giveaway Monk Archetypes to qualify just post here about your jade regent or other asian-based character.
ShadowcatX |
I apologize for my part in derailing this thread.
As to asian themed characters, I've never had one. I don't know that culture very well at all, and so I generally avoid making characters based around it. I've had a Japanese character before (in Shadowrun) but I played him as very rebellious against his homeland so I don't know if it counts.
He hated everything to do with his homeland and so tried very hard to be American (well, UCAS). He had an American flag on his wall, ordered Freedom Fries rather than french fries (the one time he ordered real food at a ball park at least), and refused to so much as admit he could speak Japanese.

I also had a Japanese hacker/rigger in Shadowrun 4e. Her father, a mid-level human exec for Mitsuhama, was blackmailed by a Yakuza-backed rival who learned his wife (her mother, also human) gave birth to a dwarf daughter (from recessive genes). Her father divorced the wife, disowned her, and abandoned them both in order to protect his career. She harbored a grudge against racists, Yakuza, and Mitsuhama ever since. Later, after heavy blowback from a half-botched run against Aztecnology, she had plastic surgery and biotechnology upgrades to hide her heritage. She worked through her internalized shame & guilt at breaking up the family, but never completely got over it.
TOZ |
I've never played an eastern themed character before. I do recall a story from a fellow player, who used the samurai class and iajutsu focus as well.
The party was accosted by local guards, who proceeded to be quite rude. His character took affront, and challenged the leader. I believe they were using the 'traveler from a far away land' trope, so the guard laughingly agreed. The DM ruled it to be a duel, and iajutsu focus fair play.
Naturally, the samurai won initiative and made his check, dealing ridiculous damage. The encounter ended with the guard slain in one stroke, and the rest quickly apologizing and leaving the party be.

Whoa! Still time to post...
I had a pair of homebrew pre-shifteresque characters in 1e, a brother and sister team: wu jen and thief respectively. In a party of other Oriental Adventures class characters. OA had cool rules for creating custom martial arts that utilised proficiency slots to gain offense/defense and special capabilities. Their form was a kick-style martial art, made both non-main combat characters pretty mean in close combat.
The leader of the party was a plant-race kensai with a dull-witted devoted bushi henchman, and the other two party members were an elf shukenja and his long suffering elf sohei underling.
Having said all that, the adventure was a strict occidental dungeon crawl, no Asian theme at all.... Lotsa fun with party dynamics though! :)

End of 2e, playing a bushi/pearl diver.
I was recovering from bad power gaming, so I played one who was built to be less than optional. Took NWP in swimming, deep diving, etc.
She same into her own in the Circle of 8 adventure.
From the other direction, we had a game where we had an Oerth cleric in Kara-tur. He didn't take Trade Tongue. DM didn't think about it since we had a character who could translate. The climax of a combat, the evil cleric casts command on the cleric. I burst out laughing.
DM: What?
Me: *still laughing* He doesn't speak Trade!
Kolslag of Asmodeus |
Kolslag, my PFS character, A Chelaxian dwarf hungry ghost monk, who was tossed out of his dwarven kingdom, (he'd be LE if he could in PFS). Pretty fun set-up, has the Bite of Belial feat, which can caused 1d4 bleed damage. He wears cestus, and uses a temple sword.
Been really fun in the 3 games we played for PFS so far.
Isuru |
Several years ago I played in a game loosely based on the Rokugan setting using d20/3e OA. My character was Genshin, a monk/samurai specializing in unarmored mobility and two-weapon fighting (talk about feat intensive).
Unlike the other stoic or enigmatic Dragon clan samurai, Genshin was a nonchalant, loquacious, "why can't we all get along", chuckle-in-the-face-of-evil kind of guy. Another player's character was his in-game 'girlfriend', actually his betrothed Crane clan wife-to-be. She was the archetypal serious-minded, excellence-striving, beautiful but deadly iaijutsu master who tossed subtle insults sharper than her blade. She reserved her razor verbal wrath for Genshin, not even our shared enemy took as much well-worded abuse as poor Genshin.
Luckily he was like a well-oiled rubber band, everything slipped or bounced off him. He had a few good as-a-matter-of-fact comebacks as well. Eventually we developed a good cop, bad cop routine. You can guess who was who.
