Frog or octopus as familar

Rules Questions

Hello, is it possible to obtain the frog as familiar instead the toad ?

What is the reach for the tongue attack ?

There are the reach for the giant frog in bestiary, but nothing for the smaller frog : reach 5 feet tongue 15 feet

What is the reach for the tentacles of a octopus as familiar ?

thanks for your future answer.

As a Tiny Creature the Blue-Ringed Octopus does not have reach with its tentacles.
I would not expect any Tiny Creature to have reach, so if your GM allows a Frog Familiar don't expect its tongue to have reach.

It is plausible to obtain the Poison Frog as a familiar though I would think you would need the Improved Familiar feat to get the Giant Frog. The Core Rulebook states under the Familiar entry that "A familiar is an animal chosen by the spellcaster" and that "Only a normal, unmodified animal may become a familiar" which the Poison Frog is.

Furthermore the Bestiary states under the Familiar entry that the familiars presented there are only the "most commonly used familiars", so they aren't exclusive, and from these entry's we can infer that a prospective familiar must be no larger than tiny and cannot have a CR greater than 1/2. The Poison Frog qualifies there too, so really it's just a matter of determining what special ability the Poison Frog grants and applying the changes under Familiar Basics sub-entry in the Core Rulebook.

I'd suggest, considering the Poison Frog has a Constitution draining poison, a situational dependent bonus: "Master gains +3 on Acrobatics checks when jumping". But as always, the GM has the final call.

Oh, and there is no reach for the Poison Frog because it doesn't have the Tongue Special Ability.

For the octopus (size small) as animal companion, there aren't the reach for the tentacles.

What is the reach ?

For the giant octopus (size large), Reach 10 ft. (20 ft. with tentacle).

For the giant frog (size medium) as animal companion, Reach 5 ft. (15 ft. with tongue).

What is the reach for a frog with a small size ?

For the octopus (size small) refer to page 6 of the Bestiary under the space/reach entry: "if the creature's space and reach are standard (one 5-foot square and a reach of 5 feet), this line is omitted."
So the small octopus can only reach 5 feet with tentacles or bite.

Since there isn't a frog (small size) stat block, I am unsure of what you mean? But you could take the frog (medium size) and apply the Young Creature template on page 295 of the Bestiary which would reduce the frog to small size though this wouldn't reduce it's reach. If I were the GM, I would rule that the size reduction would reduce it's reach to Reach 5 ft. (10 ft. with tongue), but it is not that big of a deal since Small creatures can only swallow Tiny creatures.

Octopi have somewhat limited applicability as familiars if you're not running an aquatic campaign.

The Exchange

This doesn't really apply to the main poster, but I have a witch with a king crab familiar. We are not playing an aquatic campaign, so to make sure that he doesn't die, I purchased a water pump canister that I wear on my back. He just goes down into the canister when he needs water, and it resets the "out of water" timer. This might be a viable solution for other small aquatic familiars when adventuring on land. :)

Just an FYI, because it doesn't make it clear in the SRD, but poisonous frogs excrete their poison through their skin, making handling them fairly dangerous even though captive specimens loose much of their toxicity.

If you're going to have one as a familiar I'd stock up on gloves and antitoxin.

The crab can actually survive out of water for hours at a time. Not an option for octopi as they don't even have bones to support thier weight out of water.

If you really want to prevent your king crab familiar from dying you should adventure only with vegetarians. That's a tasty familiar!

It is a mistaken assumption that octopuses can't survive out of water due to their lack of bone structure. The real problem is their inability to breathe air. They can survive on land for brief periods and even move around though. An octopus which sees a prey animal such as that tasty crab in another tank might move from one tank to the other for a delicious snack.

I'm not sure how long an octopus can survive out of water in real life...maybe half an hour or so? In the game I guess it might be limited to "holding your breath" rules. Perhaps carrying the octopus familiar around in a small tank of some sort might make sense. Later on I'd think that only a cruel DM would not allow a caster to research a variant of the Water Breathing spell which allows aquatic creatures to breathe air.

But what about Frogtipi the half frog, half octopus cousins of the owlbear.

There seem to be a lot of stories out there about octopodes climbing out of aquarium tanks, crawling over to another tank, eating fish in that tank, then returning to their own tank. Might be an urban legend, of course, since there doesn't seem to be any documentation.

I suggest a necklace of adaptation for aquatic familiars when you can afford it.

Those who care to search online can easily find videos of octopuses slorping around on dry (or more often muddy) land. Moving between tidal pools and such is apparently typical behavior for some species.

Still, an octopus can't breathe air. Therefore a necklace of adaptation won't particularly help since its effect is to create "a shell of fresh air" around the wearer. Actually, one might argue that such a necklace would kill an octopus.

Necklace of Octopus Killing:
Necklace of Adaptation
Aura moderate transmutation; CL 7th

Slot neck; Price 9,000 gp; Weight 1 lb.

Description

This necklace is a heavy chain with a platinum medallion. The magic of the necklace wraps the wearer in a shell of fresh air, making him immune to all harmful vapors and gases (such as cloudkill and stinking cloud effects, as well as inhaled poisons) and allowing him to breathe, even underwater or in a vacuum.

Construction

Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, alter self; Cost 4,500 gp
