I didn't mean to start a discussion about educational systems :) I just wanted to know what you would like to read!
Oops! Sorry we got sidetracked.
I vote for Lord of the Flies as well. It shows how easily swayed by influence and inherently evil children can be. Plus it mentions Beelzebub and who isnt a fan of that?

Oh HOR levelled!
So - DMZZ - Houndmaster Cav, is it 'allowed' even though its 3PP?
http://paizo.com/forums/dmtz3dgu?Hound-Master
Just realised we hadn't actually OK'd that and sort of got ahead of ourselves :P
Think I'll buy Cav and Thumper will just have to be a bit weak til Boon Companion next level.
Karlan Bladetwist |
I was going to do this via PM's but there's no way to do it in such a way that I can send one out to multiple people.
Anyway I've been thinking and a lot of our fights have been pretty bruteforce affairs. Hardly any buffing just run in and make attack rolls at it until it dies. It occurs to me that this is an exceedingly bad way to go about things as by the time we reach the real bad guy our resources were spent on things like keeping Karlan's arm from falling off. I think we can do better.
But really I'll get into that later. Right now I wanted to talk about nasty ways of dealing with things like Xanesha. Basically, what we're dealing with is a dragon. Yes, a dragon, a powerful flying spellcaster who is not afraid to engage us in melee. She might as well be a dragon.
In any case I've made a small but effective list of things to snatch that owuld be very useful to us in case we encounter her again.
Tark's Boss Smashing Kit:
Tanglefoot Bags x12 (makes 2 each) 600
Alchemists Fire x12 (makes 2 each) 240gp
Nets x3 (One For Kessan, One for Me, One for Ailetha all who have the best chance of nailing her with one) 60gp
Flask of Oil x6 (Makes 1 each) 6sp
Total Cost: 900.6gp Split six times is 150gp 1sp not a bad price to entangle, burn, and glue the b*%$@ to the floor.
So when we eventually have to face her it's probably again going to be on her terms. Thankfully fighting her on said terms is always merely an option.
Essentially these items let us entangle her, disrupt her spellcasting and reduce her attack rolls without casting a single spell. So overall this is very good for us. We smak her with oils and burn her alive while netted/tanglefoot bagged.
So with that out of the way let's talk about how we could have handled things differently and go forth enlightened and less bloodied, broken, and dead. That last part of the AP kicked our asses in the second half and I think it's because we changed too much about how we originally did things. For one we did not make good use of our scouts. We really don't have an excuse either. Harry is still the highest but then you have PErdition, Kessan, and Ailetha all with 10+ stealth I think we can spare a pair of eyes to move ahead of the group and get us ready for impending dangers (like spear wielding snake ladies and how to take them out before they buff).
Swcond is that if we have hour long buffs or so we should dump them before we should dump them before we enter the dungeon proper if we have them. TBH I don't think we have many hour long buffs anyway (well kessan can benefit from perditions mage armor now so that's a plus.)
I think beyond that we just need to fight smarter. We've brute forced through most of our fights and come out on top when we had kanyk, myself and harry leading the spearhead of righteous violence but, well, now the enemies are bigger and nastier than our orcs so we have to cut them down to size first before we put the boot in. We've got plenty of battlefield control though between the pits, glitterdust, grease, summons, and stone shape (if celestra ever uses it) so it really shouldn't be too much of an issue.
The trick with the whole scouting thing is that we can toss out our minute long buffs quickly.
Anyway any thoughts? Additions to the shopping list? I'd like to see if we can't squeeze a few days of prep as I'm thinking of moving karlan to full on full plate and try and get some more armor on me somehow. Unfortunately the rest of you ahve caught up with me and that is somewhat unacceptable. Also going to switch out my longsword for a scimitar.
As for other individual character advice;
Perdition: I kind of expect him to grab fireball when he levels. I only implore that he at least start picking up scrolls and things of spells like fly, haste, and what not for use in emergencies.
Ailetha: Well you might be the ebst built of all of us. The only thing I can think of is perhaps consider carrying a longspear? Or a scorpion whip instead of defaulting to the rapier? You don't rely on full attacks like me and Kessan so being able to reach out and tap someone while still being outside of threat for your spellcasting might be a good idea. Maybe drawing the rapier when me and Harry need a flanking partner? I dunno I'll let you figure it out.
Celestra: I think you just need to learn to be more clever with your spells. It looks like you're still set up fer ghoul killing when we left that plague behind wiht Aldern. My thinking is perhaps you should use the trick where you leave slots open and pray later in the day for the spells you need. At the same time make good use of the ones you have. For example you can try casting sanctuary and then run in behind me or harry and spam touch of good. You prevent the flank, and those who try to attack you have to go through your sanctuary who will in turn get pasted by the person your buffing. I can go on and on but celestra can contribute so very very much even without healing.
Harry: Welcome to Fight Club. Pick up a glaive, or a bill, or a bec de corbin, or something fancy sounding that is essentially a sharp bit at the end of a long stick. You're already capable of it and theres really good reasons to do it. Sadly you don't have the money to make it work yet.
Kessan: I wish I had told you alchemist like you asked. I just realized how much I was contributing with the one I had in the HoD game. Ah well, I'm sure you'll do fine. :P
Karlan: stop jumping in everyones way. stop getting hit in the face with swords. start conserving your abilities like its a survival horror game and you're afraid of needing to dump your whole load in the boss to live. You can only smite her once.
Anyway just my two coppers. Thanks for putting up with it. I'm going to crawl back to bed now.

Harry 'The Cavalier' Handsome 1d10 ⇒ 10
So now not only is he a rakish rogue, he's Cavalier too - twice the ladies man now. Call him now on 1800UNBELIEVABLE.
Will stat him up.
Karlan - the only downside to changing weapons is his AoE Intimidate is hooked into his great-axe (which he has focus in) reckon I'm pretty much stuck on this build rolling forwards.
Other than that, I agree with the sentiment, Harry is a plenty good scout and can certainly run around out front if needed. The only hassle with "couting" in a PbP is that it can slow the game to a crawl if it devolves into a move/move/move-athon Chess game.
Seems we cracked this though in Voodoo's LoF where I suggested we abstract the process to a few key rolls (a couple of stealths and a perception and an overview of what the aim is) and then the GM gives us a summarised version and a bit of map reveal. It means that the whole shebang can be wrapped up in two posts rather than a bajillion (remember the start of the campaign with Kanye Kobold? Seemed to be stuck hanging around for 3 days waiting for a resolution).
PbP otherwise chugs, and Im mindfull of hogging pixel space.

As a note on scouting. If necessary, I can cast Silence and Invisibility on Harry. Having him silent and invisible I am guessing would make him impossible to detect without some odd spells. But the Invisibility will come in handy. Also, at next level I plan on taking Haste to really jack up the damage output. For lower level spells, Haste is the ultimate in damage increasers if you have 2 or more good melee types, which we clearly do.
As far as Harry goes, no reason to not have two weapons, set up with a reach weapon, and then switch to the Axe when the enemy gets close. I can easily get a Scorpion Whip or something else.
Finally, if we have a day or two before we have to take off, I have Craft Arms & Armor as a feat. If anyone needs a weapon magicked up, or armor, let me know. Karlan, if you buy Plate, it will only take 1 day to make it +1 Plate. Same for any armor/shields for Harry or Celestra. Or mithral bucklers for Perdition.
Oh, and and did anyone notice, that Harry guy has become so Cavalier - bats eyelashes.
Shifty |
Yeah could do that I suppose...
And yes, Harry has now gone down the path of Order of the Dragon, Dashing and Cavalier he is, with just the right naughtiness of rogue.
On a practical level he now gets Survival as a class skill from Dragon Cav, winning.
Thumper gets a bit tougher too now, but NEXT level Harry and Thumper will be awesome... Thumper gets an upgrade and Harry gets iteratives. Roll on 7.

Now I understand how perdition's mind works.
That is definitely Perdition's brain. All flowers and unicorns and FIRE!!!!!

Will be back to you soon-ish(!?) for some weapon buffing... once Harry has cash again.

I am writing from my iPod on the north rim of the Grand Canyon. My family and I are having a great vacation. We went canyoneering in Zion national park where we were repelling down into some great canyons! We hiked up a trail called the narrows where we waded through a river up into a breathtaking canyon! Today we descended two thousand feet down the north Kaibab trail to a dramatic bridge! Sorry I have not been to post much, but I think about the campaigns and marvel that I can still read them from this remote campground far from home. Be well. I will post when I can, but I will not be home for another few weeks.

I will update my character sheet when I can, but here are my hit points.

Note to self: Don't start a D&D campaign with your current boyfriend and your ex boyfriend. Not only is their awkwardness, but when you split up from your boyfriend, the campaign dies.
But it is so much fun. You cast hold person on your ex-boyfriend, and then cast charm person on your current boyfriend and have him beat the crap out of your ex-boyfriend.

May I recommend instead starting with some PFS in your local area?
Im sure that you might find society play worthwhile, I recently got on board and have had a blast. If I find another player is a smacktard I hae the pleasure of not gaming with them again.
We just may have scored a new GM off PFS games, and I even got a schnazzy 'Best Roleplayer' award at a recent Con. Its been all thumbs up.

I'm not sure what the acronym PFS stands for, but I'm thinking you're talking about groups you can join (for a fee) like what can be found at comic book/game stores. I have seen a lot of them play Magic the Gathering, Heroclix and a few other games but not a whole lot of D&D. Not in my area anyway. Maybe I'm just not looking hard enough.
Shifty |
Pathfinder Society play.
I guess it varies as to what venues they use in your local area (ours seems to use school halls, a bunch of games stores, and even a friendly pub).
Have a look over -Here.
Have to say all the guys I have met have been pretty friendly, and most are welcoming of new players.

Yeah yeah, if I had a dollar....
Anyhow my brain just melted. I have the last five questions to do on this stupid paper and then this qualification is finished. I have ben hacking away at it for the last month like a beast, and my mental deadline was to finish it no later than tomorrow night. I shall not go to bed tomorrow until this dragon is slain.
But if I have to answer one more question on this stupid assesment sheet I'm gonna stab someone. Its like Im having flashbacks to answering questions on Lord of the Flies.

Slay the dragon, rest, then come back to us a mighty warrior. XXXX
